Kanye West
and Jay-Z premiered the anticipated visuals for their “N—-s In Paris” video on Thursday (February 9) and the Kanye-directed video is nothing short of visually stunning. From the kaleidoscope special effects to the concert footage and architectural imagery, it’ll certainly take more than one look (and listen) to soak it all in. That said, we’ve grabbed a few of the best still shots from the video for your viewing pleasure. “Cray” is only the beginning, check out more photos after the jump.

Filmed in part during the run of Throne shows at the Staples Center in Los Angeles — additional footage, one can assume, was shot during a casted performance, unless the Staples crowd was 85 percent female models — the clip captures both the loose jocularity of ‘Ye and Jay and the electric energy that coursed through the venue when “Paris” leapt from the speakers (many, many times). West fills the video with eye-catching kaleidoscopic effects, creating dizzying visuals that fold the audience, the stage and everything else in upon themselves, making fractals upon fractals. No wonder the clip is preceded by an epilepsy warning.

Given the size and scope of both the song and the artists performing it, the “Paris” video is also loaded with lasers, prowling panthers, pop-up-book cityscapes and the aforementioned models. Shoot, even producer Hit-Boy makes a one-second cameo. It’s a head-spinning, pulse-quickening mixture of imagery and movement, of sight and sound — an experience unlike any other live clip.

‘Star Wars’ Special: Six Underrated ‘Phantom Menace’ Characters

d14bd boss nass Star Wars Special: Six Underrated Phantom Menace Characters

by Ryan Rigley

There are a ton of reasons to see “Star Wars: Episode I” in 3D this weekend. First and foremost being the wide array of memorable characters that the movie introduces. Sure, Qui-Gon Jinn and Darth Maul are cool. But what of the film’s unsung heroes?

I’m talking about characters that have maybe 10 or 15 minutes of screen time at the absolute most. “Phantom Menace” does a great job of acquainting us with several really interesting characters that we rarely if ever see or hear from again in any of the subsequent prequel movies. Here are some of the more memorable ones.

» Boss Nass: This Ankura Gungan is leader of the Gungan High Council. He’s also fat, green, and lovable. Boss Nass’s catchphrase is a “HURBLBLBLBLBLBLBLBLBLA” sound that he produces by shaking his jowels as fast as he can, getting saliva everywhere in the process. Kind of like a sneezing puppy. Kind of.

» Sebulba: Best known as little Annie Skywalker’s arch-nemesis, Sebulba is the Dick Dastardly of podracing. By that I mean, he will stop at nothing to win. He’s killed and injured tons of fellow podracers over the years with his reckless driving and flat-out cheating. Also, he walks on his hands and eats space frogs with his feet.

» Ben Quadinaros: Most people wouldn’t even recognize this guy by name. But his huge, diamond-shaped face and paper-thin limbs are hard to forget. Quadinaros didn’t have a single line in the movie, but he did have a major power coupling malfunction at a crucial time during the Boonta Eve Classic podrace. Now he’ll forever be remembered as “that guy whose engines exploded.”

» Roos Tarpals: Captain of the Security Forces of Otoh Gunga, this Gungan military leader demonstrated his expert level military prowess during the Battle of Grassy Plains. Under Tarpals’ leadership, the Gungans were able to defeat hundreds of battle droids with nothing but a few giant water bubbles. He also has a sweet mustache.

» Watto: Possibly the only living being to ever be uneffected by the Jedi Mind Trick, Watto cares about one thing and one thing alone: money. This junk-dealing Toydarian is rude, cheap and a slaveowner. And to top it all off, he looks like the love child of Luis Guzman and a flying elephant.

» Captain Panaka: It’s no easy task defending the Queen of Naboo from waves of battle droids sent by the Trade Federation. But Panaka manages to do the unthinkable, remaining ever so calm and collected the entire time. Captain Panaka is a native to Naboo and head of the Royal Naboo Security Forces. If it weren’t for him, Padme surely would have been killed and Luke and Leia would never have been born!

» Not Jar Jar Binks: Seriously, he’s the worst.

Five Franchises Dwayne Johnson Could Rock

91cdb 10 dwayne johnson Five Franchises Dwayne Johnson Could Rock

These days, The Rock is cooking something a little different: money, and tons of it.

Every major studio is now privy to what was once just a whispered secret in the darkness: Dwayne Johnson saves franchises. He is the proverbial Luke to cinema’s Princess Leia, and as he proved in “Fast Five,” and hopes to carry on in “Journey 2,” putting The Rock in what would otherwise have been a mediocre movie isn’t such a bad idea.

In that spirit, here are five other franchises that we think Dwayne Johnson could bring back to life.

“Starship Troopers”
The first movie was and still is, classic, but the second, and even third (it’s real) are abominations and should be struck from the annals of history. What this franchise needs is a strong lead, somebody with a good sense of humor, but who can also bring the pain and man handle giant alien mandibles and tear space bugs limb from limb. Need I say more? With The Rock on board, the franchise would get all the money it could ever need to get back to its former Michael Ironside toting glory days.

“Independence Day”
“ID4″ is one of those movies that never got the sequel it deserved. I mean c’mon, we all knew the “alien mothership” was just the scouting vessel. Those buggers now have probable cause to kick our asses, and a serious case of manifest destiny. Who better to save the Earth (and the franchise) than Dwayne Johnson? Who needs Will Smith when The Rock is just a phone call away?

“Tales From The Crypt”
Possibly the least known franchise on the list, but a source of two of the most awesome movies of my childhood, “Tales from The Crypt” has fallen off the map. This is the franchise that made Jada Pinkett’s career, and proved that super-soakers filled with holy water were the most efficient way to kill vampires. I want The Rock, with a twist (and some bleu cheese olives): let’s make him evil, super evil. He can be Billy Zane’s pissed off demon brother from “Demon Knight” (after all they are both bald, and tan) who has come to avenge himself upon Jada, and Willow, and Jaden. It would be awesome.

“Transformers”
With “Transformers” waning, and “G.I. Joe 2” about to come out (and be awesome, by the way), now is the perfect time for what would be the best major motion picture Hasbro themed action movie cross over ever: G.I. Joe Vs. Transformers, with (you guessed it) The Rock reprising his role as Roadblock and hopefully living up to his name as he thwarts the Decepticons’ plans.

“Back To The Future”
And finally, wouldn’t it be awesome if we could get a new BTTF movie? Dwayne Johnson is just a normal cop, investigating the murder of none other than Doc Brown. Who could have done it? Why none other than the Doc’s evil younger son Verne who has decided to go mucking through time and changing the course of history. (It’s actually believable; we only met him briefly, but we already know that Verne was a twisted kid.) The Rock is left with no choice but to travel back in time, and bend that little punk over and give him a stern butt smacking.

Kanye West and Jay-Z finally released a music video for “”Niggas in Paris”, which has become the biggest song off their Grammy nominated Watch The Throne album. The video, which was directed by Kanye, takes live footage from their LA concert at the Staples Center and merges them with renaissance inspired art and architecture. You can tell the main focus was to capture the atmosphere and excitement the song generated from the crowd during the tour. Jay-z wore a snakeskin print NY Yankees cap, a Givenchy double layer leather jersey hoodie ($1,995), cargo pants, and Air Jordan 1 sneakers. Mr. West was wearing a custom Givenchy Watch The Throne oversized t-shirt, a leather kilt, leather pants, and his Air Yeezy 2 sneakers. Watch the video and see more pics below.

Jay-Z, Beyonce Attempt To Trademark Blue Ivy’s Name

By John Mitchell

Blue Ivy Carter’s name was an instant hit and her parents, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, are going to extra lengths to protect it. MTV News has confirmed that the power couple filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to reserve their daughter’s name for use in the future. The patent is intended to prevent the use of Blue Ivy’s name by non related parties.

Blue Ivy Carter: Jay-Z’s Baby Name Is Also His Favorite Color

It’s a smart move, according to family law attorney and author Vikki Ziegler. “[Seeking the trademark] forestalls competitors from using the child’s name and or third parties from attempting to sell the baby’s name back to the couple,” Ziegler told MTV News. “They are likely trying to protect what they rightfully own or created, shall we say, by trademarking Blue Ivy’s name.”

The application to trademark Blue Ivy Carter’s name, filed by BGK Trademark Holdings (Beyoncé’s company) is currently pending but will likely be approved because, as the Washington Post reports, parents are legally authorized to trademark the names of their minor children.

“In essence, it’s a trademark for a brand, and this brand is expected to be one hot commodity — just look at Blue Ivy’s parents,” Ziegler said. “Anyone else that tried to use the name after the trademark was approved could be sued and held liable for damages.”

While the Patent Office looks fondly on attempts to trademark the name of one’s own child, attempts to do the same with the names of other people’s kids are another story, as two designers learned when they sought — just days after Blue Ivy’s birth — to trademark the baby’s name for their own use.

Applications from fashion designer Joseph Mbeh to patent “Blue Ivy Carter NYC” and by an unnamed designer to trademark “Blue Ivy Carter Glory IV” for a fragrance line were denied by the Patent Office, which noted in its decision that the name belonged to a “very famous infant” and consumers would wrongly assume that any products bearing the name had been approved by Beyoncé and Jay-Z.

Ziegler noted that the trademark would “protect against others using the child’s name as a brand of merchandise in the same marketplace,” so it will not impact the “Blue Ivy” trademark held by a clothing boutique in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. The store filed to trademark its name on January 19, 2011, a year before Queen B and Jay made the name famous. They received approval on August 23 — five days before Beyoncé announced her pregnancy at the MTV Video Music Awards.
