Watch MTV’s Tribute ‘Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words’

MTV will pay respects to Whitney Houston on Wednesday (February 15) with a live 30-minute tribute entitled “Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words.” The MTV News special, airing at 7:30 p.m. ET and hosted by Sway Calloway, will feature interview clips of Houston from her network debut in 1986 through her final interview. Houston died at age 48 on Saturday in her Los Angeles hotel room of as-yet-undetermined causes.

The singer had a long history with the network, dating back to her 1985 self-titled debut album. The third single from that multiplatinum smash was “How Will I Know,” which helped introduce the singer to a wider audience when it became one of the first videos by a black female singer to go into heavy rotation on MTV, blasting open the doors for a whole generation of RB and pop divas to follow.

Along the way, Houston smashed a number of records, including the best-selling single of all time by a female artist, her iconic cover of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You.” The Grammy-winning album that song came from, the soundtrack to her big-screen debut, “The Bodyguard,” also set the all-time record for soundtrack albums, with more than 44 million copies sold worldwide.

During the MTV special, Sway will share personal stories from music celebrities on Houston’s impact and her peerless voice. The show will stream simultaneously on MTV.com and be available on demand immediately after it airs.

Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey Connect In Old Footage

By John Mitchell

On Wednesday night (February 15) at 7:30 p.m. ET MTV will premiere a 30-minute tribute titled “Whitney Houston: In Her Own Words,” in memory of the deceased singer. One of the many clips that will be featured in the tribute special is the above footage, which shows Houston bonding with Mariah Carey back in 1998, when the two singers recorded the duet “When You Believe” for the animated movie “The Prince of Egypt.”

The Last Days Before Whitney Houston’s Death

Asked about the song and whether they’d ever experienced a miracle in their own lives, Houston was the first to respond, telling MTV, “Yeah, I have. That baby sitting right up there. That’s my miracle.”

She was referring, of course, to a then-5-year-old Bobbi Kristina Brown, her only child with ex-husband Bobby Brown. Bobbi Kristina has had a particularly difficult time dealing with the passing of her mother, and was herself rushed from the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where Houston died, to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center less than 24 hours after her death. Bobbi was said to be “hysterical, exhausted and inconsolable,” sources close to the situation told TMZ.

After Carey responds, “I don’t have a child, so I can’t say the same thing, but maybe one day I will,” Houston turns to her peer for a candid moment that seems like more of an aside between two new friends than an interview sound bite.

“When you do, you will realize that is the ultimate miracle. If you think you’ve got records and you’ve done all this stuff and all that stuff, [it's] nothing like that,” Houston says. “That’s a true love that costs nothing. Unconditional love.”

Though they always insisted they were always on friendly terms, rumors of a rivalry between Houston and Carey persisted throughout the ’90s. Indeed, they were often pitted against each other on the music charts and by critics who declared their respective talents to be comparable. Even after they chose to silence rumors by recording “When You Believe” and conducting interviews together, the buzz continued. Some critics even believed they were trying to “outdo each other” during their performance of the song at the 1999 Academy Awards.

HipHopDX Expert Weighs In On #8 ‘Hottest MC’ Big Sean

MTV’s “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” kicked off on Monday (February 13), and so far Wale, Wiz Khalifa and Big Sean have already been revealed as the #10, #9 and #8 picks, respectively. MTV News’ Hip-Hop Brain Trust have already come up with a final list of the year’s Hottest MCs, but several other experts from the hip-hop community weighed in on the rappers as well.

Steven Horowitz, News Editor at HipHopDx.com shared his opinion on Big Sean’s past year.“I think Big Sean had a surprising year, I don’t think anybody thought he was going to do as well as he did,” Horowitz says, addressing Sean’s label situation under Def Jam Records/G.O.O.D. Music. “Being signed to G.O.O.D. Music is both a gift and a curse. You have Kanye’s stamp of approval but he’s not going to hold your hand and Sean proved that he’s a hustler when it comes to getting his music out there.” Listen to the full explanation above.

Tune in to MTV2 on Sunday, February 19, at 10 p.m. ET/PT to catch “MTV2 Presents: Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts,” then watch “Hottest MCs in the Game VII” immediately after at 10:30 p.m. ET/PT before capping the night off with “Sucker Free Certified” at 11 p.m. ET/PT.

Nicki Minaj ‘Starships’ vs Lil Kim ‘If You Love Me:’ Who Had The Best Single?

43d4e lilkim1 Nicki Minaj Starships vs Lil Kim If You Love Me: Who Had The Best Single?

Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim both dropped new singles this week, and both strayed a little bit from the hip-hop aesthetic. Nicki’s “Starships” single found the Young Money rapper bopping along to an upbeat dance track, while Kim’s Valentine Day ode “If You Love Me” finds the Brooklyn veteran venting about a no good dude, against a pop friendly beat with just a hint of auto-tune. Who do you think had the best single this week? Hit the poll after the jump to vote.

Nicki Minaj Offends Catholic League With Grammys Performance

Starships”: Thanks to its bouncy beat, Minaj’s sing-songy chorus and producer RedOne’s eye for Euro house-influenced pop music, Minaj may have a new “Super Bass.” It’s a blast of pop goodness in which Nicki raps and sings about partying and doing what feels good for you. The song is also full of signature Minaj sass and bravado. “Starships were meant to fly/ Hands up and touch the sky/ Can’t stop ’cause we’re so high/ Let’s do this one more time,” she declares on the feel-good chorus, before it repeats and evolves to a smashing, dance-floor-busting grind of beats, shouts and noises that are certain to get her Barbz on the floor.

Lil Kim Is Recording New Music With 50 Cent

If You Love Me:” Released yesterday as a late Valentine’s Day treat for fans (who needs candy and roses when you can have auto tune!), the love rap sees Kim all broken up inside about a no good dude.”If you love me you would say it in front of the world/If you love me you would say it in front of the world/If you love me you would say it in front of them/Boy you ain’t gotta front for none of them” the hook blasts in a Destiny’s Child “Say My Name” throwback moment. Produced by newcomer Prince Saheb, Ray-J’s producer, it’s unclear whether this is a one-off track or part of a larger project.

‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Director Reveals New Story Details

Everything that we’ve seen from G.I. Joe: Retaliation” so far screams of a director that clearly loves the franchise, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise to any of us that Jon Chu is just that.

The man loves “G.I. Joe,” so when MTV News caught up with him at Toy Fair, we just had to ask which Joe was his favorite. Naturally, two of “Retaliation”‘s main badasses are at the top for Chu.

“I loved Snake Eyes, of course, and I love Road Block. Those two to me were the coolest duo out there,” Chu said. “To me, it was Roadblock and Snake Eyes together that was the kickass team.”

Putting two of his favorite Joes front-and-center in a brand new movie was obviously a big deal for the director, and when it came time to cast Roadblock, it wasn’t a tough decision. “It was a dream to be like, ‘All right, now we really get to make Roadblock the guy. Who would be the perfect Roadblock?’” he said. “Of course, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and being able to have Ray Park return as Snake Eyes and have them be on two different adventures all across the world is awesome.”

When speaking with MTV News at Toy Fair, Chu went into a little detail about the scope and scale of his “Joe” movie, and from the sounds of it, it falls in line with the tradition of the cartoons. “As any ‘Joe’ adventure is, it spans the world, and it’s an adventure that ranges from you’re in Pakistan one second to Japan the next second and Korea another one, Washington, D.C.,” he said. “You’re definitely jumping around and it also collides at a certain point.”

One of the big welcome changes to the sequel comes in the form of Cobra Commander. While Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s surprising turn in “Rise of Cobra” was appreciated, it wasn’t the Cobra that Chu knew growing up. He wanted to change that.

“There are a couple things I really wanted to do in this movie. One of those things was reinvent Cobra Commander, to do it the way I remember him and take him to the next level,” Chu said. “To me, Cobra is one of the most iconic villains of all time. I just wanted to know that was him. I wanted to make him more badass than ever.”

Part of making Cobra “more badass than ever” involved starting from scratch with him. “We got to design him from the ground up. Creating the mask, we went through 35 revisions and how his voice was going to be, how reflective it was going to be,” Chu said. “He’s definitely a huge presence, and I can’t wait. I’m sort of trying to hide a little bit, so people when they come don’t know what to expect from Cobra, which is sort of the fun part of it.”
