Nas And Gary Clark Jr. Collaborate For ESPN

a2a30 nas birthday Nas And Gary Clark Jr. Collaborate For ESPN

By Andres Marin

Hip-Hop legend Nas and newer sensation guitarist/singer Gary Clark Jr. have collaborated once again to broadcast their music through ESPN’s NFL 2012 Draft. Three tracks have been recreated to be played in and out of commercial breaks as well as in highlight packages; and videos of both artists will be played during the event as well.

“Train” and “The Don” were taken from Nas’ upcoming album under Def Jam Records, scheduled for later this year. “The Don” was released a few weeks ago as a first peak at the album, and is getting lots to talk about already. On the other side, “Bright Lights” from the homonymous EP that has exploded Clark’s career will include some lyrics by Nas for the football three-day presentation. Gary is also preparing a new album for later this year; the 28 year-old seems to be the new Lenny Kravitz, in the sense that he blends many styles while creating a new sound. His bluesy inclined music is often compared to Jimi Hendrix’s.

Both artists worked before with ESPN, and this songs were a perfect fit according to the channel’s music director Kevin Wilson. “Bright Lights” talks about New York, where Nas is from and where the football event will be on primetime starting Thursday, April 26 at 8pm (ET).

Nicki Minaj Blends Hip-Hop And Pop On Roman Reloaded

By Gil Kaufman

One full listen of Nicki Minaj’s new album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, and it’ll be clear that the Queens rapper is on a mission to appeal to an entirely new audience. While the first half of the LP offer tracks with big hip-hop features, the second half swing in the opposite direction with dance-pop numbers. Can Nicki really please everyone

It’s virtually impossible (so far) to start out pop and then work up enough cred to get over with rap fans. But like Missy Elliott, Nelly, Eminem and Diddy before her, Minaj is hoping that she can stay relevant to the heads who fell in love with her three years ago on a series of buzzy mixtapes andstill become the next Katy Perry.

“She can rap, flat out, she has proven it with some of best rappers in game and she will never lose that ability and because of that she will always remain a favorite in hip-hop,” said XXL magazine executive editor Jayson Rodriguez. “It’s the pop crowd that can be fickle … She has the personality, the skill, the songs and charisma to inhabit that pop sphere. As long as she has skill level, there’s no reason she can’t top both charts.”

Thanks to a string of knock-out features on hits by everyone from label boss Lil Wayne to DJ Khaled, Kanye West and Ludacris, Minaj, 29, has plenty of rap bona fides. But she’s also reached for the pop brass ring by performing at the Super Bowl with Madonna, the Grammys? and on “American Idol,” indulging in the kind of outrageous fashion sense that makes headlines and earns cover stories from the mainstream press. She also launched the new album with a single in “Starships” that’s like tooth-rotting candy to pop radio, and a far cry from the gritty mixtape songs that launched her career back in the day.

That might explain why Roman is almost pointedly split in two, with the first half presenting her rap side courtesy of a string of no-nonsense rhymes produced by the likes of Hitboy and Blackout, with features by Cam’ron, Weezy, Rick Ross and, on the hard-hitting potential break-out rap single“Beez in the Trap”?, 2 Chainz. Those songs are followed by a string of tunes on the second half produced by Lady Gaga collaborator RedOne, pop trackmaster Dr. Luke and J.R. Rotem.

For the most part, mainstream critics have not been kind? about the cross-over dribble move, which has also left some fans with divided loyalties?.

“I honestly think that she saw the blueprint Kanye West made with his last album [My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy], and the way music is going where an artist can have a record playing on four different platforms [at satellite radio] and she personified it and maximized it,” said Reggie Hawkins, program director for Sirius/XM’s Hip Hop Nation. “She [isn't a rapper that] does pop records that suck. She does great pop records and songs like ‘Pound the Alarm’ are going to be played in clubs from here to Brazil. I think she’s taken it to the next level.”

Minaj recently told theLos Angeles Times that she took the disappointment of her rap fans hard when they complained about lightweight tunes like “Your Love” and “Moment 4 Life” from her best-selling debut, Pink Friday.

“I felt a lot of pressure to be inspirational and responsible [on that album],” Minaj said. “I like all kinds of music; when I was working at Red Lobster the soundtrack of my life there was Avril Lavigne. Hip-hop fans are my core, and I can never not be hip-hop. But why not showcase all sides of who you are?” Which is why, she said, she wanted Reloaded to indulge all of her many personalities, from the frantic verses of “Roman Holiday” to the mixtape-like “Stupid Hoe” and the Eminem feature “Roman’s Revenge.”

The way Hawkins reads it, Nicki doesn’t seem to really care if hip-hop gives her the cold shoulder. “She’s seen the light internationally and seen that there’s a bigger world than just Queens, New York, or Bankhead, Atlanta,” he said. “She’s grown and when I sat down with her [I got the sense] that she doesn’t care. She’s going to Will Smith the game … her next step is movies. It’s not about hip-hop critics who want to box her in as a hip-hop artist. It’s about her core fans, her Twitter followers and social media people, her Barbz. If they give her backlash it’s a problem.”

And when Nicki appeared on Sirius radio’s “Sway in the Morning”? on Shade 45 this week, she reacted to that potential backlash by explaining that she has to keep evolving. “You just gotta realize that I’m never gonna be one-dimensional,” she said. “Even my core fans I think, at times, thought I was one-dimensional when I was doing mixtapes. However, even on the mixtapes, I was singing and I did a song called ‘Can Anybody Hear Me’ on one of my mixtapes where I was singing and talking about being a female rapper and trying to get signed.”

Rodriguez said he totally understands Nicki’s desire to grow artistically and predicted that the grumbling from the rap community would settle down eventually once she puts out some hot remixes.

“The thing with a half-and-half record is that you’ll have detractors because it’s never fully one thing or the other,” he said, pointing to label mate Drake as someone who has managed to keep both sides of his audience happy with a more cohesive pair of albums that smoothly mix his pop and rap leanings. “As opposed to Missy or Diddy, who started out glossy and very pop hued … Nicki came from the DVD/mixtape scene. Her base is hip-hop, which launched her to reach those pop heights and now they’re looking at it like, ‘wham, bam, thank you ma’m.’” Regardless of the grumbling, she’s on track to show them all when Roman likely debuts at #1? on the Billboardcharts next week. What do you think of Roman Reloaded? Tell us on ourFacebook page!

To celebrate the release of Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, we will be examining the “Evolution of Nicki Minaj” throughout the week. Check MTV News every day to see how the Southside Jamaica, Queens, Barbie went from a promising mixtape standout to rap’s reigning queen.

The Best and Worst Video Game Compilations

  • Greatest Attempt to Ruin an Emotional Experience – Silent Hill HD Collection (PS3. Xbox 360, 2012)

46961 515 The Best and Worst Video Game Compilations

For a series full of dread, perhaps the constant delays behind the Silent Hill HD Collection were appropriate; as the release date lurched forward weeks at a time, fans of the series could only wait as the knots in their stomachs grew larger. When the Collection finally hit store shelves, their greatest fears had been confirmed — Silent Hills 2 and 3 still made players quake with fear, but for an entirely different reason: Hijinx Studios’ so-called “upgrade” adds a bevy of technical flaws that completely ruin the experience. Granted, many of these games’ graphical effects relied on certain PlayStation 2 hardware tricks, but that’s not an adequate excuse for releasing this collection as-is. For now, anyone looking to tour the foggy streets of Silent Hill will have to rely on the PS2 originals, or the later PC ports, which do a much better job of enhancing the games’ graphics.

Kim Kardashian Snapped On Her Way Out Of Kanye West’s Apt

2e14f kimk Kim Kardashian Snapped On Her Way Out Of Kanye Wests AptBy John Mitchell

Kanye West got tongues wagging about his relationship with Kim Kardashian when he name checked her (and threw a few shots at her ex Kris Humphries) on his new single “Theraflu,” and now the rumors are really heating up. Kardashian was photographed leaving West’s apartment in New York City on Thursday morning after the two hit the theaters to watch “Hunger Games” the night before.

Are Kanye West And Kim Kardashian Dating Now?

According to TMZ , the relationship is “just starting,” though we’d like to add the word “again” in there, as the two have been linked previously. During her visit to “RapFix Live,” West’s ex-girlfriend Amber Rose told Sway Calloway that West and Kardashian “were both cheating on me and [Kim's ex] Reggie [Bush] with each other.”

West kicked off this most recent Kim K. relationship reveal yesterday when he dropped his new track with DJ Khaled, “Theraflu.” In one verse, he finally addresses his long-rumored relationship with Kardashian, rapping, “And I’ll admit, I fell in love with Kim/ ‘Round the same time she had fell in love wit’ him/ Well, that’s cool, baby girl, do ya thing/ Lucky I ain’t have Jay drop him from the team.”

Amber Rose Says Kim Kardashian Caused Split With Kanye West

The “him” referenced here is unquestionably Kardashian’s ex-husband Kris Humphries. Our evidence : Humphries plays for the New Jersey Nets, the NBA team co-owned by West’s Throne buddy Jay-Z, hence the “Jay drop him from the team” lyric.

Last night, the pair were spotted by paparazzi leaving a screening of the blockbuster flick “The Hunger Games.” In those pics, Kim is seen wearing a feathered jacket, gray tank top, leather trousers, black heels and sunglasses … which, minus the jacket, is the same ensemble she was rocking this morning when she was spotted leaving West’s NYC apartment. Eyewitnesses said she left the building flanked by Kanye’s bodyguards and climbed into his Mercedes, which took her back to her hotel.

‘Savages’ Trailer: Taylor Kitsch And Aaron Johnson Seek Revenge

The “Savages” trailer you’ve all been waiting for is here! With an all-star cast including Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson, Blake Lively, John Travolta and Salma Hayek, our expectations are high and the trailer hints that they’ll be met.

The scintillating preview of the Oliver Stone flick opens with O (Lively) stating: “Just ’cause I’m telling you this story doesn’t mean I’m alive at the end of it. It’s that kind of a story where things just got so out of control.”

O and her two boyfriends, Ben (Johnson) and Chon (Kitsch), are living the high life. Literally. They run a flourishing marijuana business that spirals out of their control when a Mexican drug cartel tries to partner with them and they decline. The cartel’s leader, Elena (Hayek), has O kidnapped in order to get Ben and Chon to comply with their demands. What happens next is a whirlwind of shooting, explosions and a scene where Kitsch stabs Travolta that even made us cringe.

Take a look at the trailer for yourself and we think you’ll agree: this is one summer movie you’ll want to add to your must-see list. You can catch “Savages” in theaters on July 6.

Brooklyn-based rapper Josh Baze may be a fairly fresh face in the industry, but that isn’t stopping him from making big moves. Baze, a former Versace model, recently made music his focus, dropping his album Hi-Heels Low-Lifes on March 20. The album features supermodel Marisa Miller on the cover art, and his first single, “We Made It,” has a visual directed by Hype Williams.

The 21-year-old rapper draws his influences from many different places. Baze told MTV News, “My dad was a DJ, so just having him around and watching music get built inside of my house, it was a blessing, because I got to learn so much, man.” Baze has an eclectic sound, and looks up to Biggie, 2Pac, Jay-Z and even ‘N Sync and Backstreet Boys for musical inspiration according to The BoomBox.

Josh Baze recently appeared on “Last Call with Carson Daly” and now he is set to perform on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Monday, April 9. Baze will be performing his big singles “We Made it,” “Harlot,” “She’d Gold” and other tracks from the new album during the show.
