Rihanna Performs ‘Where Have You Been’ On ‘Saturday Night Live’

By James Dinh

Rihanna made her third appearance on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, giving a memorable performance while Eli Manning hosted the episode. Her set included “Cake,” and “Where Have You Been,” the video for which rolled out last week.

Standing before an oversized crystallized spider web in the middle of the black-lit stage, Rihanna began her first number with the buzzing sounds of “Birthday Cake.” It was a surprising song selection that momentarily suggested the possibility of an onstage reunion with birthday boy Chris Brown, but “Cake” ended quickly, instead leading into a medley of her tune “Talk That Talk.”

” ‘SNL,’ put your hands together like this,” she told the crowd.

With her backup dancers on hand, Rih kept the performance straightforward, offering viewers some simple shakes, pelvis thrusts and plenty of swag. One complaint was with the echo effect that was added to her microphone, which made the singer’s vocal sound shaky at times.

However, any issues with the opening number were soon forgotten when the pop star took to the stage for her follow-up performance of her brand-new single, “Where Have You Been.” Fronting an Arabian-themed backdrop and human props, Rihanna threw on a fierce game face and danced her way through the track with steady energy. It was a welcome change to see the Barbadian singer show off some footwork.

Unfortunately, the episode ended without any mention of “Shy Ronnie,” her first digital short, or any Rihanna-featured skits at all, even though “SNL” head honcho Lorne Michaels had told reporters on Wednesday that he was trying to work out the details on incorporating Rihanna into the sketch lineup.

Shy Ronnie may have not made an appearance, but Saturday’s gig was the perfect vehicle to promote her just-released single as well as her big-screen acting debut in the summer flick “Battleship,” which hits theaters May 18.

Beastie Boys’ Adam ‘MCA’ Yauch Tributed By Madonna, Mix Master Mike

By Rob Markman

Adam “MCA” Yauch leaves behind a throng of mourning fans, and those who knew the Beastie Boys member personally have continued to share their final messages. Yauch’s pals Madonna and Mix Master Mike shared their goodbyes with MTV News. “The Beastie Boys were one of a kind! And so was Adam! They were all an important part of my musical history. And integral to the musical revolution that was happening at the time,” mega-star Madonna said in statement obtained by MTV News after Yauch passed away on Friday (May 4) after a long battle with cancer. “I’m very sad to hear about Adam’s passing. G*D bless him and his family.”

Madge included the Beasties as an opening act on her 1985 The Virgin Tour. Madonna had already established herself as a formidable pop act with her first two LPs and the Beasties were just getting started. Their iconic debut album License To Ill wouldn’t come until a year later.

Mix Master Mike didn’t start out a Beastie, but his legacy before his work with the Boys is well documented. A world champion turntabilist, Mike got the call to work with the Beastie Boys on their 1998 Grammy Award winning album Hello Nasty and has been rocking with the trio ever since. He too was hit particularly hard after Yauch’s death. “The music world has lost an Icon and i lost a brother. I give thanks to Adam Yauch for allowing me to be apart of the Beastie legacy. I am so honored to have graced the stage with my idols for 15 historic years,” he said in a statement issued to MTV News. “Thank U for your friendship and thank you for picking me to be your DJ. forever I will hold you close to my heart. My Condolences go out to the Yauch family.”

There were a number of tributes on Friday night. During Coldplay‘s concert at Hollywood Bowl last night, Chris Martin and company performed a slowed down, piano-laden rendition of of the Beastie Boys‘ anthemic “(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party).”

The Red Hot Chili Peppers also paid their respects during their show at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Friday. “We’re playing this show tonight for Adam Yauch,” RHCP frontman Anthony Kiedis said to the crowd as reported by Rolling Stone.

Yauch didn’t just inspire musicians, last night during their home baseball game against the Arizona Diamondbacks the entire New York Mets team paid tribute to the fallen Brooklynite by playing the Beastie’s music as they each walked up to the plate.

Boxing champ Floyd Mayweather secured a dominating win against an aggressive Miguel Cotto in his Las Vegas hometown. The superstar boxer increased his record to 43-0 defeating Cotto with a unanimous decision surrounded by a host of music stars. Pop sensation Justin Bieber helped introduce Floyd along with his best friend 50 Cent who were in his corner as the boxer made his way to the ring. Following the fight Lil Wayne made his way towards center ring to congratulate Floyd.

Wayne met 50 in the ring where the two exchanged hugs and pounds posing for pictures with Floyd and Justin Bieber. The meeting of the minds marks the first 50 and Lil Wayne crossed paths since the Queens MC went on attack against Wayne a few years back.

Bieber proudly held Mayweathers belts as the boxer was introduced by the ring announcer before the start of the fight. The MGM Grand arena was filled with other A-list artists including Mary J Blige. Although suffering a bloody nose later in the fight, Mayweather was seconds away from knocking out Cotto in the 12th round of the fight.

With the Cinco de Mayo fight behind him, Mayweather now turns his attention towards a pending three months jail sentence on domestic violence charges against the mother of his children.

“Im blessed” Mayweather said afte the fight. “What else can I say but i’m blessed. Mayweather Promotions, the past, the present, the future of entertaninment. And when June 1st comes the only thing I can do is accept it like a true man would do.”

At the start of his post fight interview host Larry Merchant revealed that Floyd apologized to him following their standoff last September after his controversial victory against Victor Ortiz. As the fans booed on during the chat, Floyd again touched on the much debated, anticipated fight against boxer Manny Pacquiao.

“I was looking to fight Manny Pacquiao” said Floyd. “The fight didn’t happen. and I dont think the fight would happen because of Bob Arum. Bob Arum is in the way. He’s stopping the Manny Pacquiao fight. Let’s give the fans what they want. The wanna see Maywaeather and Pacquiao.”

Aside from breaking Cotto down, Mayweather also broke a record as the highest paid boxer during a fight earning $32 million surpassing the record previously held by ex-heavyweight champ Mike Tyson who once took home a $30 million dollar payday.
