Did Kanye West Sign 2 Chainz To G.O.O.D. Music?

By Nadeska Alexis

Kanye West isn’t big on interviews these days, instead he continues to deliver news through rhyme…or Twitter. After tweeting off a list of his men’s fashion peeves this past week (plus a picture of Kim Kardashian) he dropped his best one-liner in awhile:”2 Chainz is charging 100k for a verse now cause he’s G.O.O.D!!!!!!” We know that 2 Chainz and ‘Ye have a close working relationship, but does this mean what we hope it means? Is 2 Chainz an official part of the G.O.O.D Music crew?Back in February 2 Chainz announced that he’d signed with Def Jam Records and during a later visit to “RapFix Live,” he revealed that, unbeknownst to the masses, he had Kanye West had actually been working together for the past year. Kanye then made a surprise appearance during his SXSW set, and most notably, a completely silent cameo during 2 Chainz’s visit to BET‘s “106 Park.”

It was a little weird until 2 Chainz explained what happened. “That’s my dog and he doesn’t do press — he didn’t wanna do it period — and they kind of forced his hand,” 2 Chainz told MTV News. “I was like, ‘You don’t have to say nothing, bro,’ because at the end of the day I knew he was up there supporting me, period.”

“I do a lot of things behind the scenes that people don’t know [about], and they only see [what happens] on ’106 and Park,’ ” 2 Chainz continued. “So that would’ve been another event where they wouldn’t have known Kanye was back there, I wouldn’t have name-dropped, that would’ve been part of my process of just working hard and grinding it out.”

2 Chainz retweeted Kanye’s tweet, simply adding “hahaaaa.”

So, it’s official then?

50 Cent Ready To Unleash ‘The Lost Tape’

By Rob Markman

50 Cent is taking it back to the original hustle, hitting the streets with that raw and uncut. It was his mixtape grind which first made the G-Unit general a unmovable force in rap and no matter the industry banter or label politics, Fif won’t stop feeding the block.

“I’m back on the streets man, it’s goin’ down. Gangsta Grillz, the first Gangsta Grillz, it’s been long overdue,” 50 told Mixtape Daily on Friday while he was sitting in his G-Unit office in midtown Manhattan.

On May 22 Fif is teaming with DJ Drama to drop The Lost Tape, a 13-track mixtape filled with murderous material. “I don’t want to put too many joints on a tape where it overwhelms people and I don’t like making Now compilations where I got so many people on it where you ain’t sure you like it,” he said of his formula.

Fif is no stranger to the mixtape circuit; in fact he defined the grind that is crucial to almost every rap artist today when he dropped the now classic 50 Cent is the Future in 2002. Since then 50 has followed up with unforgettable titles like No Mercy, No Fear, Sincerely Yours, Southside, Forever King and The Big 10 which he dropped at the top of December. Today you’ll be hard-pressed to find a rap artist who doesn’t drop a mixtape to get their buzz up. Not that 50 needs a buzz, he’s just doing what he enjoys, so next up is the Lost Tape, his first collaboration with DJ Drama.

The pair had planned to link up some years ago, but things didn’t pan out. “It’s just timing, things change too,” 50 explained. “I had the name for it and everything Blood in a Gangsta’s Grill and we never actually went to actually create the tape because technology at that period opened up in a way that I can distribute the music to the masses without actually utilizing a DJ.”

Now, with the upcoming The Lost Tape fans will finally get to hear the two mixtape kings in tandem. The RapFix team got an early listen and trust us, it’ll be well worth the wait. After all who do you think started this mixtape thing?

“When someone handing you a mixtape out there, like ‘Yo I’m hot’ and handing you a mxitape, they don’t realize they’re handing you that tape because of me,” 50 said.

No lie!

Be sure to check MTV News’ Mixtape Daily on May 22 to get an exclusive look and listen to 50 Cent and DJ Drama’s The Lost Tape. Until then keep it locked here for more exclusive content leading up to the big day.

Diggy Throws A Party For ‘Two Up’ Video

By Rob Markman

Welcome to Diggy’s house party! For the latest video off of his debut album, Unexpected Arrival young Mr. Simmons throws an underground jam, but not just anyone can kick it. The Clifton Bell-directed video is a full-on celebration, opening with a lone sparkler lighting the night sky, before he transitions to a silhouette of Diggy playing the air piano in time with the track’s opening keys. The rookie MC has lots to toast to; at the age of 17 he has already starred in a television show, toured the country and released his first rap album. “Two up, for this great life/ If it feels right,” the son of Run begins to spit waving his two fingers in the air to further illustrate his words.

As Diggs begins his opus the specially invited guests start file in the club door, which is guarded by a stone-faced bouncer who is three times the size of any one of the teens in attendance. The crisp-looking clip is essentially split into two parts. It’s energy is propelled by the party scene filled with wide-eyed club goers; but it’s sincerity is brought forth with a solo performance shot where a well-dressed Diggy raps to himself in an empty room.

Every word is accentuated with theatrical hand movements and matching facial expressions. On the song’s first verse the Airborne MC verbally lists his hip-hop influences while he simultaneously counts them down on his fingers. “I’m Illmatic Nas, Reasonable Jay/ My Adidas run, that’s reasonable to say,” he spits paying homage to Nasty Nas, Jay-Z and his dad Reverend Run in a single breath.

In the vid Simmons tosses another, more subtle throw to another rap great. Portions of his performance shots are silhouetted against a white background, creating an effect similar to the one in Kanye West’s video for his 2007 track “Homecoming.” It’s a nice (and respectable) touch.

Without a care in the world, Diggy makes it hard not enjoy both his new single and its accompanying video. By the time the clip draws to a close, Simmons is the last to arrive to his own bash—fashionably late, of course.

What do you think of Diggy’s “Two Up” video? Tell us in the comments!

Jennifer Hudson Family Murder Trial: Balfour Found Guilty

By Gil Kaufman

On Friday (May 11) a jury handed down a verdict in the case of William Balfour, the man accused of murdering singer Jennifer Hudson‘s family. Balfour was found guilty.

He was on trial for the murders of Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson‘s mother, brother and nephew. The jury returned guilty verdicts on three counts of murder, as well as one count each of home invasion, residential burglary, possession of a stolen vehicle, and aggravated kidnapping.

Because Illinois no longer has a death penalty, Balfour will spend the rest of his life in jail without the possibility of parole. According to the Chicago Tribune, an hour before reading the verdict, the jury sent a note to Judge Charles Burns informing him that they were split, but still working to reach a verdict. Around the same time, Burns received another note asking for all of the evidence about the cell-phone tower coverage in the area of the murder.

The judge sent back a transcript of the testimony of FBI Special Agent Nikki Skovran, who performed a forensic analysis on Balfour’s cell phone on the day of the murders that placed him near the Hudson home around the time the victims were killed. Earlier, the jury of six men and six women had requested copies of two videos in evidence: one from an area high school that showed the time Balfour’s car was parked on the street and another of the police interrogation of Balfour, in which he claimed he left it there around 8:30 a.m. on the morning of the murders.

During the trial, prosecutors had argued that the time stamp on the school surveillance video provided proof that Balfour, 31, was lying about his whereabouts that morning. Balfour is alleged to have shown up at the Hudson home on the morning of the killings appearing agitated, saying he’d been up all night drinking. He spotted balloons that Julia received from a new boyfriend for the holiday Sweetest Day, got angry and punched the balloons, according to police. When Julia left the house to go to work, Balfour remained behind outside.

The jury began their deliberation on Wednesday night and had been sequestered at a hotel for two nights.

As the verdict was read, Hudson, huddled close with her fiancé, David Otunga, and sister Julia, said “yes!” and broke into tears, according to CNN.

Lawyers for Balfour had argued that the state’s case was based largely on circumstantial evidence and lacked any DNA or fingerprints tying Balfour to the crime scene. Furthermore, they insisted that Chicago police had hastily investigated the crime and rushed to apprehend their client because of the media attention on the case due to Hudson’s fame. They proposed the alternate theory that some other unknown assailant in the crime-ridden Southside Chicago neighborhood had targeted the family because of the alleged crack-cocaine dealing activities of Hudson’s brother, Jason. During 11 days of testimony from 83 witnesses — only two of which were called by the defense for a total of 30 minutes — prosecutors rebutted that claim by presenting witness testimony, firearms evidence and cell-phone records that pointed toward Balfour’s guilt.

Though prosecutors lacked hard physical evidence, they repeatedly alluded to threats Balfour had made in the past on the lives of Julia and her family, as well as the cell-phone records and the gun residue on Balfour’s clothing in the vehicle he stole from the Hudson home.

Hudson took to the witness stand on the first day of the trial and tearfully recounted her family’s disapproval of Balfour’s relationship and marriage to the singer’s sister, Julia. The “Dreamgirls” star choked back tears that morning as she told jurors that no one in her family wanted Balfour to marry her sister.

“We didn’t like the way he treated her, and I didn’t like the way he treated my nephew,” she said of Balfour, who had pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder in the October 24, 2008 slayings of Hudson’s mother, Darnell Donerson; brother Jason Hudson; and her 7-year-old nephew, Julian King.

Jetpack Joyride Might Already be Facebook’s Best Game

Jetpack Joyride Might Already be Facebooks Best Game

As much fun as I have with many of the iOS games I play, there are few which I stick with for very long. In some cases that’s because the free or $0.99 entry point for these games have a direct correlation with the amount of depth they contain — there’s one good idea, but it’s not necessarily something you’ll want to spend more than a few hours with. Jetpack Joyride is a straightforward auto-runner, hardly the sort of thing that I would expect to play for long. And yet it has managed to keep its spot on the front page of my iPhone for months; it’s my go-to game when I have a minute to spare. It’s simple, easy-to-play, and it’s now available in beta on Facebook.

Joyride started out as a $0.99 download on the App Store, during which time it sold about one million units. It was then converted into a free-to-play game and had been downloaded an additional 13 million times as of February. According to a press release issued today, that number has soared to 25 million downloads. It may not be at the level of Angry Birds, but that is a huge figure, particularly if developer Halfbrick’s expectation for 5 to 10 percent of customers spending at least a dollar continues as the game expands to Facebook.

The game consists only of tapping the screen on iOS to move up to avoid obstacles and collect coins. It’s a simple control scheme that works well on a touchscreen device and is equally effective when you are instead using a mouse. This helps it to fit right in on Facebook where you want to be able to appeal to a casual demographic of gamers who are not looking for something especially complex. That is not to say the game lacks difficulty, as making it further into the game decreases the amount of time you have to react to incoming obstacles. I found this easier to deal with in the Facebook version of the game, perhaps due in part to only your mouse cursor, and not part of your finger, obscuring your view of the screen. I also found it much easier to control one of the game’s vehicles, the Profit Bird, as I’m able to click my mouse more quickly than I am able to tap a screen, although your experience may vary when it comes to this. Much to my surprise I managed to beat my high score on iOS, which I have been unable to top for months on my phone, within 10 games on Facebook.

In addition to the control scheme, what helps to make the game work on Facebook is the brevity of each playthrough. You can start the game up and be done in a minute’s time if you don’t manage to survive for long, and even if you’re good, each try will not last for more than two or three minutes. Another factor playing into its friendliness as a browser game is the fact that it does not require the mouse to be moved around, lessening the odds of a cheap, frustrating death as a result of clicking outside of the game’s frame.

Jetpack Joyride Might Already be Facebooks Best Game

Unlike many popular Facebook games, there is, at least currently, no limit on the number of times you can play. You won’t have to solicit Facebook friends for energy so you can play one more round (although you might be bugging them to play so you’ll have more friends to compete against on the leaderboards). As with the iOS game, Halfbrick is banking on players having a desire to spend real-world money to obtain in-game coins used to purchase vehicle upgrades, cosmetic items, and gadgets, the latter of which are a recent addition to the iOS version.

Gadgets are purchasable items you can equip prior to each playthrough that have the most significant impact of anything you can spend coins on. Some help you to gain a bit of extra distance at the end of your run, one causes you to be dragged to the floor more rapidly, one allows you to start your run with a vehicle, and so on. You can equip a total of two at any time, and different combinations can yield different bonuses. None of the gadgets radically alter the core gameplay, although they are a nice way of keeping things fresh — not that that the game had trouble with that prior to gadgets’ introduction thanks to its mission system.

At any time, you’ll be tasked with three objectives. These might require you to collect a certain number of coins, to make it a certain distance using a particular vehicle, or even to avoid collecting coins. Ultimately it’s only a select number of challenges repeated over and over with different specifics inserted Mad Libs-style, yet the satisfaction of completing these and leveling up (yielding a coin reward) is a big part of why I’ve continued coming back to the game versus, say, Canabalt.

It may not be the deepest game on Facebook, but Jetpack Joyride is an excellent fit for the platform. I’m not sure if it tops something like Popcap’s Solitaire Blitz for me although, if nothing else, it’s the perfect fix for when you need something to play after running out of energy in other games or when you have a few minutes to kill.

Lil Boosie Dodges Life Sentence With Not-Guilty Verdict In Murder Trial

Lil Boosie spent the past week in court, facing charges for the 2009 murder of Baton Rogue man Terry Boyd, but on Friday (May 11) jurors deliberated for 90 minutes then handed down a not-guilty verdict. Boosie, born Torrence Hatch is no longer facing life in prison.

Hatch is currently serving an 8-year sentence for non-related drug charges, but WBRZ reports that the 29-year-old has beat the odds in the murder trial, where he was accused of ordering primary witness Michael ‘Marlo Mike’ Louding to murder Terry Boyd. 35-year-old Boyd was shot to death in his home in Baton Rouge in October 2009.

On the third day of hearings, 19-year-old Louding took the stand and backtracked on his previous confession of being hired to kill Boyd.He claimed that he had never confessed to law enforcement about the murder, adding that he was with Hatch and getaway driver Adrienne Pitman at the rapper’s house on the night of the murder.

The prosecution caught heat for trying to use Boosie’s violent lyrics to incriminate him in the case, but they also pointed to Louding’s tattoo of an AK-47, with the script “Yo Boosie Who’s Next?” as proof that the two conspired together. Meanwhile, the defense aimed to paint a picture of Boosie an artist who let too many strangers into his inner circle without knowing their intentions.

On Wednesday morning, an IT specialist took the stand to testify about the contents of the Baton Rouge rapper’s computer. The expert pinpointed a photo of a tattoo parlor which was related to the investigation, but no details were given on how his testimony affected the case. Throughout the case, several officers were questioned, including one who revealed that Boosie was not considered a suspect until he was brought up during Louding’s confession.

While prosecutors argued that Louding’s confession and cell phone records were proof that he committed the crime, Hatch’s defense attorneys countered that the confession was a lie, prompted by hours of interrogation.

The Hip-Hop Community Reacted On Twitter:

@Big Sean One time for my ni–a Lil boosie!

@PLiesCongrats 2 Boosie, Connie Hatch and the entire Hatch Family…..God is Real….#BadAzz

@Nigel_D Lil Boosie was found not guilty of murder but is still doing his 8 year sentence for drug charges.

@cthagod Now this is great news. RT @WAFB: Lil Boosie found not guilty. #Boosie

Drake Featured On DJ Drama’s ‘We In This Bitch 1.5’

DJ Drama managed to lock down features from T.I., Ludacris, Future and Young Jeezy for his hit “We In This Bitch,” so he had to pull out something extra special for the remix, which dropped on Friday. That something extra special would be a feature from Drake on ”We in This Bitch 1.5.

During Meek Mill’s 25th birthday celebration in Philadelphia on Sunday, MTV News caught up with Drama, who teased the remix, and gave a few details on how the collaboration came about. “When you have a record, being a DJ we always like to do creative things, so I got a version 1.5, which is DJ Drama featuring Drake and Future,” he told Sway Calloway, going on to explain why he thought the YMCMB rapper was the best fit to remake the single.

“When you have a record like that and [you want] to add onto it, there’s not a lot of things you could do,” he said. “[Drake] came with a monster verse, [and he's] another young, fresh talent, somebody out here that I look at the same way I look at Meek, who’s really keeping hip-hop culture moving forward, so I felt it was only best.”

Topping the original track was definitely no easy feat. Drama explained that he was very conscious of gathering Atlanta’s legends and one promising newcomer for the original. “It’s the first time that Tip, Jeezy and Luda have all been on one record together,” he said. “Plus, having Future on there, who’s got the streets on fire — 2 Chainz and Future are really holding the A down and really are a new generation. Of course, we all know Tip has been here for a long time doing his thing, and even the significance of what Jeezy, T.I. and Luda mean to the city and to my career, it’s a special moment for them, it’s a special record.”

“We In This Bitch 1.5″ finds Future on the first track with Drake since the YMCMB rapper appeared on Future’s hit single “Tony Montana.” There was some brief friction between the two, when Future took a jab at Drakefor skipping out on filming the video with him.

Republique’s Success Demonstrates How a Kickstarter Can Adapt

Republiques Success Demonstrates How a Kickstarter Can Adapt

It may have cut it close, but Camouflaj’s debut title, Republique, managed to reach its Kickstarter goal in the final hours before its deadline today. The project kicked off a month ago seeking $500,000 and, after an initial surge of pledges, found itself struggling to attract backers. Rather than accept the fact that there was not half a million dollars out there to fund a hardcore iOS title like this, Camouflaj adapted and now finds itself padding that $500,000 with additional pledges ahead of its 3pm Pacific deadline.

Republique was initially pitched as an iOS game combining stealth and survival horror in the style of a game from the PlayStation era. With an estimated budget of over $1 million, Camouflaj turned to Kickstarter to come up with $500,000 to help ensure it would not have to compromise creative control or hand over ownership of the IP.

It was a difficult sell for more reason than one. People who play iOS games are used to paying $0.99 or less. Rarely is there a game which exceeds the premium price point of $6.99 established by Infinity Blade and its sequel. Republique’s Kickstarter asked for $10 in order to be rewarded with a free copy of the game — a game slated for release during June 2013. Knowing that $10 (or more) could be spent on games available right this very second — and, despite what some people say, there are many quality experiences to be had on the App Store — would only make it more difficult to convince people to pledge money to a product from a brand new developer, even if it is one with a fairly well-known name attached to it in former 343 Industries and Kojima Productions employee Ryan Payton.

In one of the most recent updates, Payton remembered the project bringing in only $700 a day at one point. At that rate it would have taken two years to reach $500,000, but Camouflaj had a hard deadline as Kickstarter will only hand over pledged funds if the target is reached by the project’s end date. (If it does not, the money never leaves backers’ pockets.) The graph below shows what a crawl pledges came to in the two weeks following the initial flood coinciding with the project’s launch. Just over two weeks in, Camouflaj made its first attempt to lure in new backers by doing what many potential backers were asking for: It announced PC and Mac versions. It was made clear they would be designed with those platforms in mind, complete with new gameplay, controls, and story elements, as opposed to them being simple ports with mouse clicks in place of screen taps. This announcement resulted in the biggest jump in pledges since the first day up until that point, but there was still a long way to go.

Republiques Success Demonstrates How a Kickstarter Can Adapt

While continuing to interact with fans and provide video updates, including footage of development team meetings, Camouflaj announced two voice actors working on the game that were sure to get gamers excited. David Hayter, best known as the voice of Metal Gear Solid’s Solid Snake, and Jennifer Hale, the voice of the female Commander Shepard in Mass Effect, will both be playing roles in Republique and signing the posters being sent to backers pledging at least $500. Word of this development on May 3 resulted in the biggest single-day jump at the time as fans of two huge franchises had been given reason to take more than a cursory glance at Republique.

By this point nearly half of the $500,000 had been pledged, but with only a week left there was still reason to doubt the game would be funded. Other, smaller steps were taken to bring in more money like introducing a $40 tier on May 9 which includes the game on iOS and PC/Mac, as well as the digital soundtrack and documentary. Besides simply giving fans what they want and potentially bringing in those still sitting on the sidelines, it was an intelligent way of encouraging those who had already pledged to bump up the amount they were willing to part with.

All of this combined with the groundswell of support from fans (helping to push a ‘Keep Hope Alive‘ campaign named after the game’s protagonist, Hope) and the media — raising questions of what role the press should play in a case such as this — resulted in Republique surpassing its $500,000 goal earlier today with only seven hours to go.

A portion of the money coming in during the final days (more than half of the $500,000 was pledged in the past week) may have been from individuals like myself who chose to see how things would play out before pledging, yet Camouflaj did an admirable job in adapting and listening to what fans wanted as it attempted to reach its goal. Besides the fact that many people were counting it out weeks ago and continued to doubt $200,000 could be raised in the last three days, it’s also a testament to what Kickstarter remains capable of even amidst claims it has already outlived its viability as a method for funding videogames.
