Emmy Awards 2012: ‘Homeland’ Dominates

“Homeland” was at home during Sunday’s (September 23) 64th Primetime Emmy Awards, winning six statuettes, including Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Actor and Actress for leads Damian Lewis and Claire Danes. Also winning big were the ABC comedy “Modern Family” and HBO’s miniseries “Game Change.”

See the full list of 2012 Emmy Award winners.

The telecast kicked off with a sketch set 20 minutes before showtime, in which a bevy of best actress nominees were gathered around the ladies’ room mirror practicing their “surprised faces.” When a mysterious woman ran into a stall and began weeping, “American Horror Story” actress Connie Britton went to investigate, mistakenly opening the wrong stall door and revealing a naked Lena Dunham perched on the toilet eating a cake. It was Kathy Bates who finally broke down the correct door, exposing host Jimmy Kimmel and his Botox-botched face — the reason for his tears and insistence that he couldn’t go on stage. Not to worry, the assembled actresses told him, they’d punch his mug back into shape. Multiple right hooks and left jabs later (and with a pants assist from previous Emmy host Ellen DeGeneres), Kimmel took the Nokia Theatre stage.

The emcee whizzed through his opening monologue, extolling our nationalistic pride in the small-screen medium. “Television is an American institution, and yet one out of five acting nominees tonight are British, which I don’t understand,” Kimmel mused. “I guess we’re supposed to reward them because their actors went to the Royal Shakespeare Company and ours were discovered at the mall.” After going political (“Being a Republican in Hollywood is like being a Chick-fil-A sandwich on the snack table at ‘Glee.’”), Kimmel singled out 26-year-old writer-director-actor Dunham. “I don’t have a joke here,” he said. “I just wanted to make them feel bad about themselves.”

Amy Poehler and Louis C.K. presented the first award of the night for Supporting Actor in a Comedy to “Modern Family” actor Eric Stonestreet. The two-time winner beat out co-stars Ed O’Neill, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Ty Burrell for the honor. “I never knew I’d be on TV as a gay man,” Stonestreet said during his acceptance speech. “But I love the pictures of hairy chests you guys are sending me.” Stonestreet’s co-star Julie Bowen also won her second Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Comedy. Lead acting wins went to “Two and a Half Men” star Jon Cryer (also his second Emmy), as well as “Veep” actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus. As Louis-Dreyfus began to thank the cast of “Parks and Recreation” and children Archie and Abel, it became clear she and fellow nominee Amy Poehler had swapped acceptance-speech notes.

The reality category followed, in which “The Amazing Race” took home the Emmy for Outstanding Reality Show Competition. And after five consecutive nominations, Tom Bergeron won Reality Show Host for his work on “Dancing With the Stars.” “This is particularly satisfying since Betty White always kicks my a– at our mixed martial arts class,” he joked of his fellow nominee, adding, “I want to thank Jeff Probst for not being nominated. That helped.”

Next up was the drama category, where “Homeland” leads Claire Danes and Damian Lewis jump-started their series’ winning ways. “I don’t believe in judging art, but I thought I’d show up just in case,” Lewis said. It should be noted (before the Jon Hamm apologists write in) that Lewis’ win meant the “Mad Men” star has now been nominated for his performance on the AMC drama five years in a row with no win. Aaron Paul won his second Emmy for Supporting Actor in “Breaking Bad,” while a missing-in-action Maggie Smith won Supporting Actress for her Dowager Countess role on “Downton Abbey.”

Perhaps needing a little levity after the seriousness of the drama category, Kimmel enlisted the help of “30 Rock” actor Tracy Morgan for a Twitter prank, asking the audience to tweet “OMG! Tracy Morgan just passed out at the Emmys. Tune into ABC now,” while Morgan lay on the podium. “Tell Kerry Washington I’m all right,” he yelled as he was finally dragged from the stage.

Jon Stewart was the star of the variety category, taking home his 10th consecutive Emmy for “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.” “We were told we get a free sandwich after 10,” he joked, before graciously recognizing his fellow nominees.

In the TV miniseries or movie category, Jessica Lange won her second Emmy for her portrayal of complicated Constance Langdon on the FX series “American Horror Story.” “It’s been such a wild ride,” Lange recalled. “It started more than a year ago. I got a call out of the blue from Ryan Murphy, who I’d never met who made me, I must admit, more promises than any man I’d ever met before and they all came to pass.” Supporting Actor went to “Hatfields McCoys”‘ Tom Berenger, while his co-star Kevin Costner won Lead Actor. HBO’s “Game Change” swept the rest of the category, notching wins for Outstanding TV miniseries or Movie, Lead Actress (Julianne Moore), Writing (Danny Strong) and Directing (Jay Roach).

As part of the In Memoriam tribute, actor/director Ron Howard gave special tribute to his “Andy Griffith Show” co-star Andy Griffith, who died in July. “I had the great fortune to play his son Opie for eight seasons,” Howard said. “I was able to grow up professionally in that collaborative, fun but hard-working environment that was defined by Andy’s taste, creative energy, unwavering respect for the audience and the unique possibilities that he believed our show could offer. Andy’s legacy of excellence, excitability and range puts him in the pantheon.” Dick Clark, Sherman Hemsley, Andy Rooney, Steve Jobs, Patrice O’Neal and Whitney Houston were among those remembered in the slideshow set to “The Way We Were,” penned by composer Marvin Hamlisch, who also passed this year.

And then there were two. Awards, that is. Julianne Moore presented the award for Outstanding Drama Series, which went to “Homeland,” the first Outstanding Series win for Showtime. Then, perhaps to no one’s surprise, “Modern Family” was awarded the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy, presented by Michael J. Fox.

Zachary Quinto Teases ‘Intense Action’ In ‘Star Trek’ And ‘American Horror Story’

8e910 Zachary Quinto Zachary Quinto Teases Intense Action In Star Trek And American Horror Story

Zachary Quinto is quite the busy bee these days, juggling multiple acting gigs, development work with his Before the Door production company and being a part of the jury for The Wrap’s “ShortList” film festival. As such, he’s a hard man to track down so once you do, you have to maximize the opportunity and poke for some updates on his most buzzworthy upcoming projects: the “Star Trek” sequel and “American Horror Story.”

Speaking to the top secret “Trek 2,” we asked Quinto to name his favorite day of filming.

“It’s hard to narrow it down. That was a long shoot in a lot of great ways,” he said. “There was a really intense action sequence that I got to participate in pretty primarily this time, and that was really different and exciting for me, so I look forward to watching that come together and seeing what J.J. [Abrams] does with it. But just the whole experience, I have such an affinity for J.J. and for that cast, we get along in a very unique and special way and I think we’re a part of each others’ journeys in a really unique way as well, so I look back on the whole thing with fondness, although I will say I’m grateful that it’s over.”

We then mentioned that we hoped to see more of the romance between Quinto’s Spock and Zoe Saldana’s Uhura.

“Well, we shall see… you’ll be the first to know,” he said.

Yeah right, Zach. Moving right along to creepy “American Horror Story,” we asked Quinto what new muscles he gets to flex this season versus his brief appearances in the first season.

“We’re in the middle of that. It’s a really different story from the first season,” Quinto said. “I’m in this whole season whereas last year I was only in a few episodes, so I have a lot more of an arc to track, the character, but it’s incredibly fun and I love the ensemble of actors that are working on that show. It’s one of the favorite things I’ve done on television in terms of the nature of the work and the dynamic on set. It’s a really special group of people so I’m really stoked to be among them. It’s a fun world to play in. There’s a lot to discover and create.”

Adam Levine ‘Too Scared’ To Watch ‘American Horror Story’

Adam Levine is on board to play one-half of “The Lovers” in the new season of FX‘s super-creepy cult series “American Horror Story.” But he might want to do one thing before he hits the set to work on season two: Like, you know, actually watch the show.

“I’m still too scared to watch it,” he confessed when he sat down with MTV News earlier this week to chat about the new Maroon 5 album, Overexposed. “But I’m gonna try and beat my fear of really creepy, scary things like that by doing it. I think that’s a good way to tackle that fear.”

Not only is Levine scared of things that go bump in the night, he’s also somewhat afraid of the show’s creator, Ryan Murphy, who’s already ordered the ab-tastic leading man not to divulge much of anything about his character to anyone.

“I can tell you nothing ’cause Ryan Murphy‘s already yelled at me like six times,” Levine said. “Ryan, I’m not going to say anything. Don’t worry. He texted me the other day like, ‘Shut up, stop talking about it,’ ’cause he likes to shroud everything in secrecy.”

While fans may not know what to expect from Levine, given the show’s penchant for having their attractive leading men appear sans shirts, we imagine that Murphy might tap into one of Levine’s greatest assets. And when MTV News spoke to “AHS” writer Tim Minear recently, he explained that while this new season will take place in the 1960s, Levine will play a character that serves as a bridge to the present.

“Let’s say that Adam’s character is kind of a nod to contemporary sensibilities, as opposed to something from the mid-century,” he explained.

Season one of the FX horror series took place in sunny Los Angeles, which served as the backdrop to Murder House and its disturbed inhabitants, both living and dead. But season two will take place in the last century on the East Coast with a mental institution as the locale for all the creepiness. “AHS” fan favorite Jessica Lange will be back and calling the shots. Other returning castmates include Zachary Quinto, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Lily Rabe.

Adam Goldman Is In With Web Series ‘The Outs’

Adam Goldman is the writer, director and an actor on his own hit series, “The Outs.” If you are young, gay and Internet-savvy (as most young gay men are these days), then you have probably heard of his show since the first three episodes are already out. If you are not any of those things, you should still check out the show.

Once the gay blogs (Out.com, Queerty, Towleroad, etc.) caught on to “The Outs,” the show took on “a life of its own,” according to Goldman, with viewers begging for more. The most interesting thing about the show, aside from its surprisingly high production value and its well-written dialogue, is that “The Outs” is an independently produced Web series that’s making a sizable impact on a generation of viewers who are watching more and more of their entertainment online.

This six-episode dramatic Web series is funded entirely by successful Kickstarter campaigns and out-of-pocket expenses from the 26-year-old Bard College graduate and the creative team he assembled. “The Outs” tells the story of a couple of recent exes in New York and a good friend of theirs. The exes just so happen to be gay men.

Goldman explained the void he aimed to fill when he created the show. “I asked people, ‘What’s your favorite TV show about gay people?’ Or ‘name me a TV show [exclusively] about gay people,’ ” Goldman recalled. “Nobody really has an answer, and I think that’s just sad.”

Goldman noted that while TV has become more LGBT-friendly in the last few years, with a handful of excellent gay characters on “Modern Family,” “Glee,” “Smash,” “True Blood,” “American Horror Story” and more, none of these shows is centered around a gay story line.

“I think that what we’ve seen from the moment we started the project is a desire for it, and there’s an audience for it,” Goldman shared. “We just want to prove that there’s space in media for stories like this. It’s a story about people who happen to be gay, and we’re super-proud and pleased to appeal to a gay audience.”

As far as being on the edge of the online entertainment frontier, Goldman described his stance on the exciting position: “We’re just trying to stretch the definition of what a Web series can be, so we’re trying to shoot it as a TV show that happens to be online.” As HD camera technology continues to improve and the costs of the equipment drop, piecing together a quality show is not the impossible dream that it was only several years ago, though the process is not easy to fund alone.

With the viewer base growing rapidly, Goldman and his team just surpassed their latest Kickstarter goal in just 48 hours. That puts the team ahead of its budget for the production of the show’s upcoming fourth episode. Now is the time to keep an eye on Goldman and independent producers like him who are leading the new “TV on the Internet” movement. And if you haven’t already, check out “The Outs” at www.theouts.tv.

Adam Levine, Jessica Lange ‘American Horror Story’ Details Revealed

While there have been scant details regarding the second season of “American Horror Story” floating around since it was announced it would be rebooted in a new time and place with spanking-new characters, what fans have been most clamoring to know about is how season one bad girl Jessica Lange will be re-imagined for the series.

“She’s not playing this kind of ersatz Tennessee Williams character this time,” “AHS” writer Tim Minear told MTV News about Lange in season two. “She’s playing something that’s a little more East Coast, a little more patrician.”

While she was a bit of a darkly motivated, self-involved floozy in season one, her new backstory seems to paint a different picture for the character. “She’s playing a nun,” he said. “She’s playing an administrator of a facility. It’s different. In this instance, she’s a bride of Christ.”

Season one of the FX horror series took place in sunny Los Angeles, which served as the backdrop to Murder House and its disturbed inhabitants, both living and dead. But, season two will take place in the 1960s on the East Coast with a mental institution as the locale for all the creepiness. Lange will call the shots, which is sort of what she did in season one as well, but it seems she’ll be motivated in a whole new set of ways.

“We thought it would be cool. I mean, the truth is, when I first met with [creators] Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk about the show, I came in, I read the pilot script, and I’m like, ‘OK guys, this is all very well and good — I don’t know how you make this into a TV show. I don’t know how you sustain this,’ ” Minear recalled.

“And Ryan immediately had the answer, and that was, ‘Oh, the way we sustain it is by the end of the season, we have killed off every character.’ And I’m like, ‘I’m in!’ And then you revamp it. Basically, in season two, you have a whole new story, a whole new location, a whole new time frame. You just do something different,” he added. “The reason we’re doing it in the 1960s is because that fits the story that we want to tell.”

Given that anything is possible in the “AHS” world, there’s a chance that the infamous Murder House just might make a cameo. “I wouldn’t rule anything out,” Minear shared.

Sure, everyone has been salivating over details about Lange and her newly learned good-girl character, but there’s another casting that has everyone intrigued: Maroon 5 leading man Adam Levine has been cast as one of “The Lovers.” “Let’s say that Adam’s character is kind of a nod to contemporary sensibilities, as opposed to something from the mid-century,” Minear noted.

Levine joins other returning castmembers Zachary Quinto, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Lily Rabe as well as Lange.

Levine and his bandmates will drop Overexposed on Tuesday. They will sit down with MTV News for an “MTV First” on Monday to discuss the new album, and perhaps Levine will share more details about his “AHS” role.

Don’t miss the premiere of Maroon 5′s “One More Night” video during “MTV First: Maroon 5″ on Monday, June 25, at 7:53 p.m. on MTV, followed by a 30-minute QA with the band on MTV.com.

Adam Levine To Star In ‘Can A Song Save Your Life?’

Adam Levine is proving to be quite the multi-tasker. In addition to an already busy schedule that includes juggling Maroon 5 frontman duties and judging “The Voice,” Levine is reportedly set to make his big-screen debut in the music-themed, possibly romantic drama “Can a Song Save Your Life?”

According to Deadline, Levine will star alongside Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo and Hailee Steinfeld. The film reportedly revolves around an aspiring singer (Knightley) who moves to New York with her boyfriend and fellow aspiring musician (Levine) so they can both pursue their music careers. Levine’s character breaks up with Knightley soon after their arrival to pursue a solo recording contract, leaving Knightley on her own to be discovered by a “down-on-his-luck” record producer (Ruffalo) while singing at a local bar.

The film will be directed by John Carney (“Once”) and executive-produced by Judd Apatow.

The role will be Levine’s first in film, in addition to having already picked up a recurring role on FX’s soapy and creepy noir “American Horror Story.” Levine will play one-half of a couple known as “the Lovers,” but that’s about all we know.

“It is the truth,” Levine confirmed to E! News recently about the “Horror” gig. “I mean, it’s pretty much happening. I think it’s happening. I don’t know how much I can divulge, because [series co-creator] Ryan [Murphy] is very under wraps. It’s going to be fun. And I told [Murphy] I really didn’t know what I was doing, but he didn’t seem to really care,” Levine continued. “So I’m just going to go and try to [do] acting. I think I’m going to be kind of playing myself, so hopefully it will be easy.”

No word yet on a production start date for “Can a Song Save Your Life?” or the second season of “Horror Story.” Levine is currently on tour with Maroon 5 and will return to his judging duties on “The Voice” this fall.

‘American Horror Story’ Season Two Is In ‘A Different World’

New place, new time, new characters. That’s what fans already know about the second season of “American Horror Story,” but now creator Ryan Murphy is dishing even more details.

Speaking at a TV Academy panel Wednesday (April 19), Murphy confirmed that the second season in the series will, in fact, take place at a mental institution on the East Coast, as had been rumored. That institution will be run by season-one fan favorite Jessica Lange, who will return as a spankin’-new character. According to Murphy, that locale was teased by Sarah Paulson‘s medium character in the first season.

“Something that Sarah Paulson‘s character, Billie Dean, says to Jessica and Taisa as she’s sage-ing the house [during the 'Birth' episode] and talking about places where evil collects: We talk about institutions and prisons and things like that,” Murphy said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “That was the clue.”

Paulson is also set to return to the show, playing someone new, as well as Zachary Quinto, Evan Peters and Lily Rabe.

While season one was set in the present, Murphy hinted that season two will take place in another time. “It’s a completely different world and has nothing to do with season one; there’s not a mention of season one,” he noted at the event, where he was joined by past castmates Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott, Alexandra Breckenridge and Denis O’Hare, most of whom met tragic fates in season one. But he added that some of those actors may also return in some form.

In addition to some old faces, Maroon 5 lead singer Adam Levine has been added to the cast, playing one-half of “The Lovers.” French actress Lizzie Brochere has also joined the cast, potentially playing a nemesis to Lange’s character. The new season will kick off later this year on FX.
