The Weeknd Steals The Show On French Montana’s ‘Gifted’

The Weeknd Steals The Show On French Montanas Gifted

By Maurice Bobb

French Montana’s debut, Excuse My French, is just six days away, so to get his fans ready to click “buy” on iTunes or stand in line at their local retailer for the physical CD, the Bad Boy signee served up his latest single, “Gifted,” featuring The Weeknd Wednesday (May 15) for their listening pleasure.

Debuted via Karen Civil, the track has a totally different vibe from his strip club anthems like, “Freaks” and “Pop That,” Frenchie’s latest explores his rare introspective side. On the four-minute track, the singer born Abel Tesfaye offers up his signature falsetto to set the mood, before the rapper born Karim Kharbouch jumps in to flex his lyrical muscle at the 1:40 mark. That’s right, the Toronto crooner goes in for almost two minutes before French serves up his verse, making this song feel like more of a Weeknd single with a Montana feature than the other way around.

Still, Montana manages to mine his experiences from hip-hop stargazer to superstar with lines like, “this that Derek Jeter on his last catch/this that Whitney Houston on her last track” and “this that Tiger Woods on his last swing/this that Jimi Hendrix on his last string,” which explore his exasperation with navigating the pitfalls of success. For his part, the Weeknd offers up the perfect hook, singing, “When they love me, I get money, I get money, I get money.”

Thus far, Frenchie’s first LP is living up to the hype, with a roster of who’s who rappers on tap to make appearances: Diddy, Lil Wayne, Drake, 2 Chainz and, of course, Rick Ross, who has consistently mentioned the upcoming album on his Twitter feed. EMF is out May 21st. The video for “Gifted,” which features Frenchie’s tiger cubs Ike and Tina, has already been shot in Miami.

Is Danity Kane Reuniting Without Diddy?

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy

Danity Kane may be back but without their mentor and the man who discovered them, Sean “Diddy” Combs. The girl group was put together by Diddy on the music talent search MTV’s “Making The Band” but they seem to be forging out on their own.

TMZ reports that four members of the original five: Aubrey O’Day, Dawn Richard, Shannon Bex and Aundrea Fimbres were seen lunching with a new manager in LA. TMZ shares that a reunion record and tour are slated to arrive.

TMZ asked the girls if Diddy was involved this time around and their response, “Who’s that?”, seems to indicate that the Bad Boy honcho is not involved at all.

In 2008, the group, known for songs like “Damaged,” was dismantled with Aubrey and D. Woods being fired. “I would rather be hated every damn day of my life for being real than loved for being something I’m not,” O’Day told Sway on the special that aired at the time. Diddy seemingly fired Aubrey for her diva attitude. “Check this out, baby girl,” Diddy said. “See, your attitude is gonna have you in a dark and lonely place. … What you need to do, at the end of the day, is humble yourself.

In 2009 the remainder of the group was gone too. “It changes [our situation] completely,” Dawn said to MTV News then. “We have fans out there who love Danity Kane. We love Danity Kane. It’s hard. We’re sitting here trying to make sense of it now. It’s hard. We’re put in this position that we didn’t ask to be in and we’re being told to fix it.”

Members Dawn and Aubrey have continued to stay in the spotlight. Recently, Aubrey appeared on “Celebrity Apprentice” while Dawn has continually pursued music as part of Dirty Money and on her own.

Amanda Bynes Channels Cassie With Half-Shaved Head

Amanda Bynes Channels Cassie With Half Shaved Head

Our girl Amanda Bynes is working with a new look today, inspired by Bad Boy artist Cassie. The last time we wrote about Ms. Bynes and her love for Drake, we made the mistake of using an old photo, which we would never think of doing again since she so kindly corrected us on Twitter.

On Thursday night she shared a new Twit Pic with fans revealing her brand new ‘do. “I buzzed half my head like @cassie! No more old photos! This is the new me! I love it!” Amanda we hope Cassie actually sees the pic, but first you have to send it to her real Twitter account babe.

Earlier in the week Amanda was still hitting up Drake via Twitter, letting him know,  “I want to start singing in a few years!” in case he’s interested in a duet in the future. He did make a cameo on “Idol” last night to surprise one of his fans, so who knows, he might be open.

Miley Cyrus And French Montana Get ‘High,’ Make Sweet Music Together

Miley Cyrus And French Montana Get High, Make Sweet Music Together

By Carolyn Amurao

Here are three Miley Cyrus facts for you: Miley Cyrus has worked with some of the biggest names in hip-hop (including Wiz Khalifa, Tyler the Creator and Pharell Williams). Miley Cyrus is highly respected by Snoop Lion. Miley Cyrus is buddies with French Montana and they get high together. At least, that’s what the Bad Boy rapper told MTV Hive this week.

When asked about how they came to be hanging out at South by Southwest this year, French said: “That’s my dog. That’s my peoples. We became friends at the Clive Davis Grammy party. I was sitting there with Puff. She was sitting there with Wiz [Khalifa]. She just kept looking at me laughing, I kept on looking at her laughing. I said, “What you laughing at?” She said, “I know you high like me.” After that, we became mad cool. I went over to the studio, just kicking it.”

Besides dishing on the (drug-induced) beginnings of their friendship, Montana, whose debut album, Excuse My French, is out in about a month (May 21), confirmed that he and the “Hannah Montana” actress are collaborating. “Yeah. We working on something now,” he said. “That’s just cool peoples.”

Miley is certainly “cool peoples” these days, and that’s a very modest compliment compared to the one Snoop Lion gave her. The former Disney star teamed up with the rapper-turned-reggae artist for his single, “Ashtrays and Heartbreaks” from his upcoming album, Reincarnated. He said that Miley is “one of the greatest musicians and personalities of all time”.

[News] French Montana Delays "Excuse My French," Talks Nicki Minaj Duet On New Single

French Montana announces a third release date for “Excuse My French” while discussing his new single with Nicki Minaj.

French Montana has hit another bump on the road to releasing his debut. In a recent interview with Rap-Up TV, the South Bronx rapper announced that his Bad Boy debut Excuse My French will now be released on April 16th.

While another delay must be disappointing, the Bad Boy rapper seemed sure that his latest single, a remake of the classic Lil Vicious and Doug E. Fresh song “Freaks” featuring Nicki Minaj, would give fans something to be excited about.

“It will be top 40, No. 1,” he said confidently when referring to the remake. Montana also had nothing but praise for his fellow New Yorker. “She’s the hottest chick to come out, I’m the hottest dude to come out of my city in a long time so I’m proud of everything she’s doing. She is one of the best to do it as a female artist, nothing but respect for her.“

This is the third release date given for the album, which was originally slated to drop July 17th last year before being pushed back to the fall. Montana instead released Mac Cheese 3 in November, admitting that he didn’t want to rush his project.

Minaj isn’t the only heavy hitter slated to appear on the album, as Montana has worked with The Weeknd, Kanye West, Rick Ross and Bad Boy label head Diddy, among others.

[News] French Montana Cites Max B As Inspiration, Talks Surviving Gunshot Wound & Fatherhood

French Montana addresses a slew of topics, including narrowly surviving a gunshot wound to the head.

French Montana has certainly had his share of success in the past year, signing a deal with Bad Boy and Maybach Music Group, while landing collaborations with the likes of Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, and more.

Still, French hasn’t forgotten his source of inspiration, which also serves as a cautionary tale. “My best friend (rapper Max B) is serving 75 years in prison,” said French in an interview with USA Today. “Only one of us made it. I think about all this when I make music, of all the sacrifices made. Nothing is just going to come to you, you have to make it happen.”

The rapper also recalled surviving a gunshot wound to the head in the Bronx. “I try not to bring that memory back. I’m glad I made it through that time, but, yeah, that experience was part of the album.”

Finally, French Montana spoke on how he intends to raise his son, who is now three years-old. “Kids who have everything grow up thinking that everybody owes them,” he explained. “I want him to grow up like me. I want him to struggle a little so he knows how to be a man. I’ve got to leave him in the desert, and when he gets older, he’ll understand why his father left him like that.”

[News] The Hip Hop Week In Review: Nas Starts Recording New Album, Freddy E. Commits Suicide

Nas hits the studio to begin recording the follow up to “Life is Good,” while rapper Freddy E. took his own life. Meek Mill got into it with Shyne on Twitter.

This week, Nas gave an interview revealing that he’d begun work on his twelfth studio album (and eleventh solo LP), which serves as the follow up to last year’s Life is Good. He also was crowned the best lyricist of all time by CNN, a title with which he agreed. Meanwhile, Hip Hop suffered tragedy this week after Freddy E. tweeted about and then commenced to commit suicide, eliciting a response from rumored lover Honey Cocaine who clarified that they were just friends. Finally, Meek Mill continued beefing with rappers who have been in the game for a minute, taking to Twitter to go word-for-word with Shyne about coming at young emcees.

Nas Begins Work On New LP, Hospitalized For Vertigo

Nas made a brief announcement earlier this week at the end of an interview with Associated Press that revealed that he’d begun work on what’s assumed to be his twelfth studio album. Just six months after dropping his stellar Life is Good, Esco said that he’s in a “great zone,” also naming Kendrick Lamar‘s good kid, m.A.A.d city and Meek Mill‘s Dreams Nightmares as some of his favorite albums from 2012. CNN made a bold move by naming the Queens, New York rapper the finest emcee of all time, a title with which he agreed later in the week. But it wasn’t all good for the veteran rapper. He was supposed to hit the stage at “Live with Kelly and Michael” yesterday morning, but was hospitalized and released for vertigo. Not to worry: the rapper said he’s doing “alright.”

Freddy E. Tweets About Committing Suicide Prior To Killing Himself, Honey Cocaine Responds

Hip Hop was dealt a bad hand this week following the death of rapper Freddy E. In a series of chilling tweets, the Tyga affiliate wrote “I’m sorry” and “*puts finger around trigger,” capping his short series with the final message “If there’s a God then He’s calling me back home. The barrel never felt so good next to my dome. It’s cold I’d rather die than live alone.” It was later confirmed that he died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Honey Cocaine, who reportedly dated Freddy, responded to allegations that she was influential in Freddy’s suicide, taking to Twitter and stating that he was either perpetrating or the victim of a hoax. After deleting the tweets, she gave an interview where she said, “I just want people to know that we were just friends, and we did everything for each other as friends. I just feel like he couldn’t handle his problems anymore, and this is someone who had real, deep issues within him, and I didn’t know, I guess his friends didn’t know…I guess he made himself seem happy, but he was really just holding everything inside.”

Meek Mill Shyne Spar On Twitter

Meek Mill and Shyne just can’t seem to get enough of beefing on Twitter. After the former publicly sparred with Cassidy and the latter recently traded words with Game, the two took to the social networking site this week and had a go at it. Po originally praised Cass’ epic diss “R.A.I.D.,” to which the Maybach Music Group rapper didn’t take too kindly. “Ayo @OriginalShyne I see u hate all the young niggas that’s out here getting! I can’t respect ya for that…A @OriginalShyne talkin about shout out 2 a nigga that’s no good in the hood..I’m in my hood right now..iced out foreign whips..That’s not G,” he wrote. Shyne invoked his beef with Rick Ross, replying, “@MeekMill Your great wit the raps! You in the streets, ok! But your boss is Donnie Brasco! Ice T from new jack city! How u justify that.” The saga continued, but it settled down after the former Bad Boy emcee called Meek a “street general living by the rules of honor integrity.”

[News] Kendrick Lamar Explains Why He Avoids Music Disputes

Kendrick Lamar discusses the pitfalls of rap beef and explains why he avoids it.

Even though Shyne gave him more than enough reason to retaliate, Kendrick Lamar turned the other cheek after the former Bad Boy went out on a limb to call his Aftermath debut good kid, m.A.A.d city “trash.” Now, in a recent interview with Acclaim Magazine, the Compton upstart discusses why he abstains from rap beef.

K. Dot explained that while he understands the effectiveness of beef as a marketing tool, he makes sure to avoid engaging in feuds with other emcees. He said that he prefers to let the quality of his music dictate his legacy, not his actions against detractors.

“I mean it’s the entertainment business, you can never forget that, so I don’t knock other people’s strategies to keep themselves relevant, I just comprehend that the music comes first and always speaks first, no matter what you do,” he said. “You can say the most outlandish thing but if you drop a record the next day and it’s trash now you’re just a popular person. I don’t just wanna be a popular person, I want my music to always live because that’s what’s gonna drive your legacy. You can be the most popular person on the planet. There’s a lot of artists that are way more popular than Kendrick Lamar, but when it’s time for their album to drop and that week is up or that year is up and the reception from that album is not as critically strong as good kid, m.A.A.d city, it shows…I just let the music speak. I don’t get into all the crazy shenanigans of the business. I let the music speak and at the end of the day that always stands.”
