Is Beyonce Following Rihanna’s Lead With ‘Bow Down?’

Is Beyonce Following Rihannas Lead With Bow Down?

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy

Beyonce##Q##s new song “Bow Down” still has everyone talking since its release. The brash, in-your-face track is more aggressive fare than what people might have expected from Beyonce whose past hits have tended to err on the more romantic side. Many fans liken Beyonce##Q##s new swagger, which also includes more expletives than we##Q##re used to from Mrs. Carter, to bad gal Rihanna, who is known for assertive, sexually-charged songs like “Birthday Cake” and “Pour It Up.”

“That sounds like more of a Rihanna type of song. I am very surprised Beyonce went that route lol This a DIRTY jawn anthem type of song lol” said one fan on Twitter, stating that “Bow Down” could be a Rihanna track with lines like “Don##Q##t get it twisted/This my sh-t/Bow down, b-tches.” Another fan said that the “new” Beyonce may even take Rihanna##Q##s spot as pop##Q##s bad girl. “Beyonce done made y##Q##all forget y##Q##all loved Rihanna 2 months ago. Smh. Lol.”

Other fans don##Q##t like the Beyonce and Rihanna comparisons. “someone on my TL said beyonce is trying to keep up with rihanna.. uhm no.. beyonce has enough money to chill out for a little” said one defiantly on Twitter while another threw in “no, Rihanna can##Q##t do it like Beyonce.”

One person who seems to have taken offense to the song is singer Keyshia Cole, who sparked a Twitter storm yesterday after blasting the number. “Can##Q##t stand when people all self righteous when it##Q##s convenient it makes them look good. Lmao! But can still talk sh– when convenient 2 FOH” she tweeted, along with “First “Women need to Stick together” now bitches better Bow. Smh. But it##Q##s all G! Chicks stay shooting the sh–. ..”

Beyonce##Q##s fans a.k.a. the BeyHive quickly swarmed together and responded to Keyshia in a string of very angry tweets. Keyshia even responded to some. “Never said there was any. IM not in denial… God Bless RT @_BEYHive: @KeyshiaCole f— yo unity.”

Rihanna’s 25 Birthday: Pour It Up For Her Big Year

Rihannas 25 Birthday: Pour It Up For Her Big Year

By Sidney Madden

Rihanna celebrates her 25th birthday today and instead of festering over some mundane quarter life crisis, she’s basking in the success of both her personal and professional life. Considering the year she’s had, it’s no wonder Rih is in such high spirits. Here are a few highlights from her past year.

MTV VMAs kickoff performance
Rihanna opened the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards with an explosive performance melding pop, rap and dance. She performed “Cockiness” from her Talk That Talk album featuring a verse from A$AP Rocky and a breakdown to her international hit “We Found Love” with help from Scottish DJ Calvin Harris.

#1 Debut with Unapologetic
Rihanna finally accomplished a numerical feat on the music charts that every artist dreams of. Her seventh studio album, Unapologetic, proved to be lucky number seven for the Bajan songstress, debuting at #1 on the Billboard 200.

Reconciliation With Chris Brown
After months of alluding to a reconnection, Rihanna began blatantly instagramming pics of herself with Chris Brown, announcing to the world that, after three years after the pre-Grammys assault, they are back together. In an interview with Rolling Stone she said, “I wasn’t going to let anybody’s opinion get in the way of that. Even if it’s a mistake, it’s my mistake. After being tormented for so many years, being angry and dark, I’d rather just live my truth and take the backlash. I can handle it.”

Grammys 2013 Performance
Rih performed her ballad “Stay” featuring singer-songwriter Mikky Ekko at the 2013 Grammys, showing critics her vocal and emotional span beyond raunchy hits like “Birthday Cake.” The raw and heartfelt melody was met rave reviews.

River Island Collection Debut
The singer turned designer stole the show at London Fashion Week with the debut of her own collection to be sold through British retailer River Island. The collection features angsty and mid-driff baring pieces that pay homage to grunge and punk rock.

Mac Cosmetics Deal
On her birthday, the 25-year-old unveiled her new makeup line for MAC Cosmetics featuring lip colors, blushes and powders to make you look (almost) as radiant as the artist herself. The first product launched will be RiRi Woo a deep ruby lipstick that is similar to MAC’s already best selling Ruby Woo color.

At 25, Rihanna has already come into her own as an artist, catapulting herself into the realm of savvy mini-mogul. Happy Birthday Rih!

Rihanna’s ‘Diamonds:’ The Bad Girl Grows Up

Used to be, whenever the words “Rihanna” and “mature” were used in the same sentence, the latter was followed by “audiences only,” and folks were attempting to decode what she meant by “Birthday Cake.” Yes, for the past few years, Rih Rih has seemingly delighted in pushing both boundaries and buttons, tweaking parental units with a string of hits that were as gleefully raunchy as they were, well, unsubtle.

And while she’s still the same girl in her personal life — at least if her Instagram account is to be believed — it appears that, musically, Rihanna may be in the midst of some grand metamorphosis: based on brand-new single “Diamonds,” one can gather that perhaps, at long last, she’s growing up.

To be fair, the single’s artwork does feature her rolling diamonds into a joint, but on the song itself, she displays a marked level of (dare I say it?) maturity, one evident in the restrained production and perhaps best exemplified by the first mantra she lays on us: “I choose to be happy.”

Now, at 24, she appears willing to put past relationship drama behind her (unless she decides to put Chris Brown on the “Diamonds” remix) and embrace the positivity and fulfillment of a fully realized partnership, singing “When you hold me, I’m alive” and admitting “I knew that we’d become one right away.” And she does it with a remarkably clear head, in stark contrast to her previous work, like, say the druggy “We Found Love,” or the whirling “Where Have You Been,” both of which seemed to celebrate bad love in all its forms. This time out, she’s getting by on the hope and promise of better days ahead.

You’d think, as a result, the song would be somewhat boring, at least in the canon of Rihanna’s other super-charged, super-sexualized hits, but you’d be wrong. Working with an accomplished songwriter like Sia, and in the capable hands of producers Stargate and Benny Blanco, “Diamonds” instead delivers its thrills gradually, unspooling on somber synth chords and a simple backbeat, eventually building to a sumptuous chorus. There’s a certain level of complexity to it, and Rihanna’s voice, un-lacquered and free of studio swath, sounds warm, personable and above all sincere. She believes what she’s singing here, which is a big step given the context of her words.

And sure, we don’t know what the rest of her upcoming seventh album will sound like, and it’s entirely possible she’ll drop a raunch-tastic music video to accompany “Diamonds,” though I sort of doubt it. Rihanna seems to be embracing her newfound maturity this time out, which, while probably inevitable, is also a welcome departure. She’s no longer searching for love “in a hopeless place,” she’s found it right in front of her, and for the moment at least, she’s content to stay here.

Rihanna’s Road To 2012 VMAs: From Pop Princess To Good Girl Gone Bad

Where hasn’t Rihanna been in the past two years? The 24-year-old will return to the VMA stage on September 6 for the first time since she and Eminem burned things up with “Love the Way You Lie” in 2010, and her rise has been astounding since then.

Rihanna is currently tied with Drake for the most VMA nominations, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. With the November release of her sixth album, Talk That Talk, which included a coveted feature from Jay-Z, Rihanna solidified the bad-girl image we were exposed to on singles like “SM,” but more importantly, she finally made it clear who she is as an artist.

In a recent interview with Oprah Winfrey, Rihanna admitted that she “felt stifled” during her early days at Def Jam, feeling pressure to live up to their expectations of the perfect pop princess. But those days are over.

Over the past year, fans who follow the singer on Instagram and Twitter have gotten a much closer glimpse of her personality and lifestyle through uncensored tweets and photos documenting everything from bikini-clad vacations to tattoo parlor visits. In February, the Good Girl Gone Bad performed the ultimate act of defiance when she released a remix of her hit “Birthday Cake” with none other than her infamous ex, Chris Brown, delivering a guest verse. Despite the feedback, both negative and positive, Rihanna carried on like it was simply no big deal.

Two months later, she landed on Time magazine’s list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World, where designer Stella McCartney had this to say about her: “She’s one of the coolest, hottest, most talented, most liked, most listened to, most followed, most impressive artists at work today, but she does it in her own stride,” McCartney said.

Just a few weeks later, she made her silver-screen debut in the blockbuster film “Battleship” and also became the first person to appear alongside Jay-Z and Kanye West during their Watch the Throne tour run, when they summoned her to the stage in London.

From there, her performances didn’t slow down, with sets at BBC’s Hackney Festival and appearances on “Saturday Night Live” and the “American Idol” season finale, where she performed “Where Have You Been” sporting dreadlocks. Not to mention her self-described “gangsta goth geisha” getup in Coldplay’s “Princess of China” video, which also debuted this summer.

With so much growth in so little time, it’s impossible to predict what Rihanna will have in store for her 2012 VMA performance, but it’s sure to be a can’t-miss event.

The 2012 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Thursday, September 6, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. Head to VMA.MTV.com from now through August 24 to vote for your favorites, or text BNA to 22444 (message and data rates may apply) to vote for Best New Artist all the way through the show!

Rihanna ‘Afraid’ Of Falling In Love Again

Rihanna has never been one to shy away from taking risks. This self-proclaimed rebel has made statements through her music, her videos or her personal style. But there is one part of her life where she tends to be a little more guarded: her love life.

“[I'm] rebellious through my music, through my fashion, tattoos, and my hair. I have been conservative in my love life. … It’s pretty much nonexistent,” Rihanna told Harper’s Bazaar in an interview for their August issue. “If I come across someone who I find really cool, I’ll hang out. But the minute I find that we’re getting too close I just — I don’t let people in.”

Yet, there are still rumors that she is close with her ex-boyfriend, Chris Brown. The former couple, who parted ways after his 2009 assault of Rihanna, collaborated on two remix tracks earlier this year, including her single “Birthday Cake,” which was met with some harsh criticism from both fanbases.

“The fans could have said, ‘We don’t want anything to do with it,’ ” she said. “I understood that people had every right to be concerned about it. But I didn’t see it that way because I’m in a different place.”

Even though she may be in a different place it doesn’t mean she is ready to jump back into a relationship. While she doesn’t mention any names in the interview, she does reveal just how much she was hurt by a former love.

“When I was in love, I fell so hard. I was really, really, really in love. The way it made me feel was priceless. And in a blink of an eye, my whole life changed,” Rihanna said. “Everything that I knew was different. I never thought I’d feel that pain in my life. I’m afraid of feeling that again.”

Rihanna, graces not two covers for the magazine. And though she may be hesitant to begin another relationship, but she has no trouble stepping out of her boundaries when it comes to her style. On the first cover, the Barbadian beauty dons a Calvin Klein Collection dress, while the other she rocks Tom Ford snake-skin boots. Yet, she says that there is still one major accessory that’s missing.

“I don’t know if there’s something going on with my body right now, but I’m eating everything in life!” she laughs. “I miss my ass. It just went away! I need a butt. I have an idea of one, but it’s not living up to its full potential right now.”

The August issue of Harper’s Bazaar hits newsstands July 17.

Chris Brown Treats Rihanna To Champagne At NYC Club

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy

Rihanna and Chris Brown brushed paths again at an New York nightclub on Saturday. The former lovers partied next to each other at SL nightclub in the city this past weekend and though they didn’t speak, they were apparently sitting close enough to throw stares at each other. And, according to a PageSix source, Chris sent Rihanna two bottles of Ace of Spades Champagne.

Brown’s current girlfriend, Karrueche Tran, was in NYC over the weekend too. “kill ‘em w kindness” she tweeted yesterday, which some speculate could be about Chris and Rihanna’s cordial behavior.

Rihanna herself seems surprised by all the negative attention she’s getting for cozying up (musically) to Chris. She blasted Esquire magazine recently in an interview on the public’s fascination and critique of her and Brown. When asked again about their musical collaborations — remixes to the songs “Birthday Cake” and “Turn Up the Music” — Rihanna says it was “definitely” controversial: “The whole thing caught me a little off-guard to be honest … especially the amount of … negative attention. Because it never occurred to me how this was going to be a problem. It really didn’t.” She later insists, “I thought people were gonna be surprised that we finally did a record together, but I didn’t see how people could think it was a bad thing. In my mind, it was just music.”

She added “I mean, if I went back to him [as a girlfriend], then that’s a whole different discussion” on the speculation she and Brown were romantically involved again. “And if I ever do, then that’s something that y’all have to talk to me about when — if — that ever happens. Until then, look at it for what it is.”

Rihanna Performs ‘Where Have You Been’ On ‘Saturday Night Live’

By James Dinh

Rihanna made her third appearance on “Saturday Night Live” this weekend, giving a memorable performance while Eli Manning hosted the episode. Her set included “Cake,” and “Where Have You Been,” the video for which rolled out last week.

Standing before an oversized crystallized spider web in the middle of the black-lit stage, Rihanna began her first number with the buzzing sounds of “Birthday Cake.” It was a surprising song selection that momentarily suggested the possibility of an onstage reunion with birthday boy Chris Brown, but “Cake” ended quickly, instead leading into a medley of her tune “Talk That Talk.”

” ‘SNL,’ put your hands together like this,” she told the crowd.

With her backup dancers on hand, Rih kept the performance straightforward, offering viewers some simple shakes, pelvis thrusts and plenty of swag. One complaint was with the echo effect that was added to her microphone, which made the singer’s vocal sound shaky at times.

However, any issues with the opening number were soon forgotten when the pop star took to the stage for her follow-up performance of her brand-new single, “Where Have You Been.” Fronting an Arabian-themed backdrop and human props, Rihanna threw on a fierce game face and danced her way through the track with steady energy. It was a welcome change to see the Barbadian singer show off some footwork.

Unfortunately, the episode ended without any mention of “Shy Ronnie,” her first digital short, or any Rihanna-featured skits at all, even though “SNL” head honcho Lorne Michaels had told reporters on Wednesday that he was trying to work out the details on incorporating Rihanna into the sketch lineup.

Shy Ronnie may have not made an appearance, but Saturday’s gig was the perfect vehicle to promote her just-released single as well as her big-screen acting debut in the summer flick “Battleship,” which hits theaters May 18.

Rihanna Brings Eye-Popping Sets To ‘Saturday Night Live’

Marking her third appearance on “Saturday Night Live,” Rihanna proved that the third time’s a charm when the pop titan took over the Studio 8H stage on Saturday for a pair of eye-popping performance sets during the Eli Manning-hosted episode.

Rihanna Won’t Sweat ‘Ranting’ Over Her Chris Brown Reunion

Rihanna didn’t call her latest album Talk That Talk for nothing. The Good Girl Gone Bad regularly hits Twitter to hash it out over everything from her taste in ink to her take on fellow RB divas. But the one subject she’d kept off her tongue was ex-boyfriend Chris Brown.

So the Bajan beauty’s decision this year to very publicly reconcile with Brown, who served probation for assaulting her in 2009, by teaming up with him in February on a pair of remixes was widely met with shock and, in many circles, outrage. In the new issue of Elle, however, the blond cover girl tells the magazine she understands her decision is a hard pill for some to swallow.

“The bottom line is that everyone thinks differently. It’s very hard for me to accept, but I get it,” she says. “People end up wasting their time on the blogs or whatever, ranting away, and that’s all right. Because tomorrow I’m still going to be the same person. I’m still going to do what I want to do.”

Rather than view the violent end of her relationship with Brown as a brutal low to be endured as a victim, the superstar says the fallout from the headline-making assault gave her courage.

“It gave me guns,” she says. “I was like, well, f—. [The public knows] more about me than I want them to know. It’s embarrassing. But that was my opening. That was my liberation … Now you know that, so you can say what you want about it. I don’t have anything to hide.”

In the wake of her provocative “Birthday Cake” remix with Brown, the 24-year-old was rumored to have reunited with the “Deuces” singer both in and out of the studio. But Rih says in the May issue (out April 17) that she’s focused on changing her single status to “in a relationship,” stressing over the pervasive man shortage and her busy schedule.

“I feel like it’s hard for everybody! I don’t think it has anything to do with being famous. There’s just a major drought out there.”

Rihanna Says Working With Chris Brown Is ‘Innocent’

Three weeks after Rihanna dropped her much-debated “Birthday Cake” remix featuring Chris Brown, the singer is finally commenting on why she decided to work with her ex-boyfriend. Rihanna and Brown also collaborated on a remix of his “Turn Up the Music,” which was released on the same day last month.

“The first song that came about was ‘Birthday Cake.’ … We ended up recording [the two songs] at the same time and executing them together,” she explained on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show Thursday morning (March 15). “But I reached out to [Brown] about doing ‘Birthday Cake’ because that’s the only person that, really, it made sense to do the record.

“Just as a musician, despite everything else, that was going to be the person,” she said, referring to Brown’s 2009 assault on her, which ended their relationship. “You know, I thought about rappers, and I’ve done that so many times, and the hottest RB artist out right now is Chris Brown. So I wanted him on the track and then in turn he was like, ‘Why don’t you do the remix to my track?’ and it was a trade-off.”

The ex-couple have also had fans buzzing in the last few months over rumors that they have been dating again, despite Brown’s romantic relationship with aspiring model Karrueche Tran.

“We did two records — one for my fans, one for his fans — and that way our fans can come together,” Rihanna explained. “There shouldn’t be a divide, you know? It’s music and it’s innocent.”

The interview is the first time she has commented publicly about the controversial remixes. However, “Birthday Cake” co-producer/writer The-Dream recently stopped by MTV News’ “RapFix Live” and opened up about the track.

“The same questions that went through my mind, and I’m an artist also, had to have gone through hers,” The-Dream recalled of hearing Rihanna’s remix idea. “When she raised the question to me, I know she’s not crazy. So my thought was, ‘You’ve been thinking about this, you’ve already thought it out, so evidently you know what reaction you gonna get.’

Dream added of Rihanna and Chris’ troubled history, “Everybody knows what took place, cool. Have the power to really forgive if that’s what it is. If not, stay on that side of the fence from the beginning.”
