Meet The ‘Not Fade Away’ Band In Exclusive Featurette

David Chase, the famed creator of “The Sopranos,” made his long-awaited feature film debut last year with “Not Fade Away,” a semi-autobiographical tale of a garage band formed in 1960s New Jersey.

Since so much of the film depends on the members and characters within the band, this exclusive feature from the Blu-ray and DVD, which hits shelves on April 30, provides an interesting insight into the fabric of the story and the making of the film.

All of the stars, including “Boardwalk Empire‘s” Jack Huston played their own instruments for the film, so you’ll be able to check out some of the behind-the-scenes skills and hear the stories how each of the cast members joined the band and the film.

“Not Fade Away” hits Blu-ray, DVD, and digital download on April 30.

Joaquin Phoenix Is Your New Robert Downey Jr. In Casting Call

4b698 Master Joaqin Phoenix Joaquin Phoenix Is Your New Robert Downey Jr. In Casting Call

By Hannah Soo Park

Joaquin Phoenix and Paul Thomas Anderson might be the next big actor-director duo, Kate Winslet is eyeing Vernoica Roth’s “Divergent,” Reese Witherspoon might be lining up a Sudan drama, and Chris Hemsworth could be headed to the seas—all in today’s casting call!

Joaquin Phoenix and Paul Thomas Anderson Together Again?
Following their work together on “The Master,” Joaquin Phoenix and Paul Thomas Anderson are looking to team up again for the director’s film adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s “Inherent Vice.” The Hollywood Reporter says that the actor is reportedly in negotiations to star as a private “pot-smoking detective” following a kidnapping case in Los Angeles during the late ’60s and early ’70s. According to previous rumors, Robert Downey Jr. had once been rumored offered the leading role, but ultimately turned it down.

Kate Winslet Shows Interest In YA Territory
Variety has the news that Kate Winslet could be dipping her toes in potential franchise material for the first time, now that she’s rumored to be joining “Divergent.” The movie, based on the YA novel by Veronica Roth and directed by Neil Burger, takes place in Chicago during the dystopian future where citizens, at the age of 16, must choose an ideological “faction” to permanently identify with. Winslet’s role hasn’t been fleshed out, but she’d be joining Shailene Woodley, who’s already been cast as the lead. “Divergent” will play in theaters on March 21, 2014.

Reese Witherspoon In Talks To Tell ‘The Good Lie’
Reese Witherspoon might be joining Philippe Falardeau’s “The Good Lie.” Written by “Boardwalk Empire” writer Margaret Nagle, the based-on-a-true-story film follows a “young refugee of the Sudanese Civil War” who wins a lottery that allows him to move to the U.S. with three other boys. Witherspoon would presumably play the “brash” American woman who’s assigned to help the group.

Chris Hemsworth Might Star In Another Ron Howard Film
Ahoy! Ron Howard already has plenty on movies on his plate right now, but now, the uber-busy director has his sights set on making Nathaniel Philbrick’s “In the Heart of the Sea,” with Chris Hemsworth as his lead. Hemsworth, who worked with Howard on “Rush,” would play a sea captain whose experiences on the waters are said to have inspired Herman Melville’s “Moby Dick.” So there you have it—another potential swashbuckling role for the “Thor” actor’s resume.

‘Boardwalk Empire’ Season Premiere: Lingering Questions

The long wait for season three of “Boardwalk Empire” ended Sunday night, and we now get to see where Nucky, Margaret and the rest of the gang find themselves after a year-and-a-half jump forward in time.

We basked in the HBO show’s triumphant return, but there are still a few questions that we need answered in the coming weeks.

What is Gyp Rosetti up to?
Season three started with the definitely unhinged Gyp Rosetti explaining, with the help of a tire iron, that he isn’t as dumb as he seems. The kind of explosive, passion-driven violence is not something we’re used to seeing on “Boardwalk,” which has typically executed its murders in cool, calculated plots. With Nucky already on Gyp’s bad side, is it only a matter of time before the Sicilian gangster does some explaining to the former treasurer of Atlantic City?

Who’s On Richard’s Hit List?
It wouldn’t be “Boardwalk” without a moment of sheer badass-ery from Richard Harrow. In this case, memories of the dearly departed Angela inspire Richard to pay a visit to her killer, Manny Horvitz. The shooting could be as simple as revenge for Angela’s needless death, but Manny also played a role in Jimmy’s downfall. The Darmody’s were once Richard’s only connection to real human interaction, so could we be seeing the beginning of a much longer revenge game for Richard?

Can Nucky and Margaret Fix Their Marriage?
Considering the way season two ended, it came as a surprise to see that the premiere only addressed the marital troubles of Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Thompson at the end. We spent the whole hour waiting to see how things stood between Nucky and the woman who signed away a fortune, and the answer came quickly and definitively once the New Year’s party ended and the two were finally alone. If that weren’t enough, Nucky is back to sleeping around. Can a relationship that started with the murder of Margaret’s husband survive this?

Has Nucky Gone Full-Gangster?
Now that Nucky is back to sleeping around at the Ritz and ordering the murder of a thief right in front of him, we have to wonder how bad he will go. The tagline of the season (“You can’t be half a gangster”) and the end of season two seem to signal that Nucky is more than ready to embrace the transition. Plus, Gyp Rosetti seems destined to push Nucky even further.

Who the Hell Is Gaston Means?
Aside from Bobby Cannavale joining the cast as Rosetti, the other big addition is perpetual series-enhancer Stephen Root. His character, the mysterious Gaston Means, will make his first appearance next week, but even then, we will have to wait and see where he fits in all of this. Check out our interview with Root above to learn a little more about Mr. Means.

‘Boardwalk Empire’ Set Visit Shoots Us Season-Three Secrets

There’s a street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, that wouldn’t usually draw attention, if it weren’t for the high barbed wire fence and the security guard stationed next to the gate. Otherwise, the stack of shipping crates 50 yards behind the chain link wouldn’t seem out of place in the somewhat industrial area near the East River.

Behind those shipping crates, however, lies Atlantic City in the year of 1923 — the set of “Boardwalk Empire.”

In the lead up to season three of the HBO show, premiering Sunday, MTV News traveled back in time to visit the set and see how the pieces had settled after last year’s shocking — and frankly, ballsy — conclusion.

The Boardwalk
The centerpiece of the set is, obviously, the boardwalk, a vast stretch of slanted wood planks and store fronts, tucked away from prying eyes just behind the shipping crates. The largest outdoor set ever built in New York, the boardwalk immediately impresses because of its size, but even a project this big requires a little help from special effects. (The reverse side of the shipping crates is covered in with blue matting to digitally expand the small patch of sand and add the Atlantic Ocean.)

Looking past the scale of the set, it’s actually the smallest aspects of the boardwalk that make you forget that none of it is real. Many stores along the boardwalk function as working sets, instead being a collection of façades. You can walk into the candy store and find boxes of historically accurate sweets, and the base of the Ritz opens up to an ornate hotel lobby, which doubled as a classroom for the child actors the day we visited.

The Midway
Though we found the boardwalk nearly deserted, a quick trip around the corner revealed where the cast and crew had been hiding. Season three of “Boardwalk Empire” will introduce a new location, a carnival-like midway, which the crew built directly behind the boardwalk. The new set matches the boardwalk’s mind-boggling level of detail.

The buildings lining either side of the narrow street are plastered with intricate billboards, which were modeled off actual 1923 advertisements. Grips constantly supply extras with new mounts of cotton candy after the older ones dry out in the high-powered set lights. They also replenish their melting shaved ice occasionally.

Extras required costume once-overs between takes, making a relatively straightforward scene an intricate operation, involving dozens of crewmembers.

The midway acts as a darker alternative to the ritzy boardwalk, supplying cheap thrills to those who can’t afford any other kind. At the end of the row, a man on stilts and a fat lady attract visitors to the circus, and the scene’s dialogue refers to a camel, which we catch a glimpse of behind the midway.

Richard Harrow
Jack Huston was just visible down the midway when we first arrived on set — past the throngs of 1920s thrill seekers, carnies and salesmen. It’s difficult to miss him when he stands taller than most in the crowd and a painted mask covers half his face.

Playing the scarred veteran sniper Richard Harrow, Huston has left little doubt about his status as the breakout star of “Boardwalk Empire.” That’s probably because, despite the unnerving look of Richard, Huston and his character elicit a great deal of sympathy on a show that is full of despicable men and women. As other characters have been blown away and shooters become more and more unrepentant, Richard has remained in the fans’ good graces.

The rasping voice we’re used to hearing from Huston disappears between takes, giving way to the actor’s natural voice, a much brighter English accent. The scene the crew filmed during our day on set is one that should please Richard’s fans. While we can’t give away too much about the scenes, it’ll suffice to say that, with Jimmy and Angela gone from his life, there’s a gap in Richard’s life, and the scene may be a step toward fixing that.

The third season of “Boardwalk Empire” premieres this Sunday on HBO.

‘Man Of Steel’ Actor Henry Cavill Is ‘The Real Deal’ As Superman

When “Man of Steel” hits theaters next June, you’ll believe a man can fly, and that’s all thanks to the convincing work of leading man Henry Cavill.

Speaking with MTV News at the red carpet premiere of “Boardwalk Empire” this week, “Man of Steel” actor Michael Shannon — who plays the villain in the Zack Snyder-directed action film — expressed his admiration for Cavill’s work ethic and his amazing transformation into the Last Son of Krypton.

“I always felt like I was in a scene with Superman,” Shannon said of Cavill’s performance. “I never looked at him and thought that’s just somebody trying to be Superman — he felt like the real deal.”

Easily one of the most iconic characters in the DC Comics library, if not the most iconic, Superman comes with no small amount of baggage to his name. Christopher Reeve played the role to legendary heights over four “Superman” films of varying quality; even in the lower-grade movies, however, Reeve’s turn as Clark Kent was nothing short of revered. Indeed, Reeve set a precedent that Brandon Routh failed to meet in “Superman Returns” in the eyes of many fans. That only puts more pressure on Cavill, the latest to fight for truth, justice and the American way on the big-screen. Based on Shannon’s praise, it sounds like fans have little to worry about. Part of what makes Cavill’s performance so strong in the “Boardwalk Empire” actor’s eyes is the amount of effort Cavill put into getting the globally-recognized superhero right.

“I really admire Henry’s work ethic. I really haven’t seen anybody in this business work quite that hard,” said Shannon. “Obviously it’s a tremendous responsibility, and an intimidating one, to wear that suit. But he had the confidence and the work ethic to accomplish it.”

“Man of Steel,” co-starring Amy Adams and Laurence Fishburne, soars into theaters on June 14, 2013.

‘Boardwalk Empire’ Season 3 Premiere Date Announced

5ce6d boardwalk copy Boardwalk Empire Season 3 Premiere Date Announced

It might not be present at Comic-Con like its HBO siblings “Game of Thrones” and “True Blood,” but “Boardwalk Empire” is still giving us reason to celebrate. HBO has announced that the third season of the Steve Buscemi-starring TV series will return to the network on September 16.

The press release issued by HBO promises that season three will continue chronicling “the life and times of ‘Nucky’ Thompson, the undisputed leader of Atlantic City” in 12 new episodes. But just how tenuous will Nucky’s undisputed reign be this season? After the death of a certain character at the end of season two, it will be interesting to see where season three picks up.

Boardwalk Empire” will start up the week after “True Blood” airs its finale, returning to its usual time slot of 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. HBO confirmed that the season’s cast will include Buscemi, Kelly Macdonald, Michael Shannon, Shea Whigham, Jack Huston, Stephen Graham, Michael Stuhlbarg, Vincent Piazza, Paul Sparks, Michael Kenneth Williams, Gretchen Mol and Bobby Cannavale.

We understand that Martin Scorsese is busy filming “The Wolf of Wall Street,” but we would love nothing more than to see him return behind the camera on “Boardwalk Empire.” He’s served as executive producer (alongside Mark Wahlberg, Stephen Levinson and Tim Van Patten) for all of “Boardwalk’s” 19 episodes, but he only directed its pilot. As the series continues to get better and better, we’d love to see him lend his Oscar-winning directing talents to the show once again.
