Demi Lovato’s Makeover Gets Rave Reviews From ‘X Factor’ Fans

Sure, there were some contestant shakeups on Thursday night’s “X Factor” that certainly left fans surprised. But perhaps the change that had most viewers shocked was the brand-new look that judge Demi Lovato debuted on the show.

While she had been a blonde for the pre-taped episodes of the Fox series, this week, she decided to try out something else for the live shows by dying her hair a deep, chocolate brown, reminiscent of the hair color she sported back in her tween days on the Disney channel.

While she had her bangs brushed back on Thursday, she certainly looked like the much younger, “Camp Rock” version of herself when she wore the color with bangs on Wednesday.

Additionally, she’s been trying out a different makeup look with each hairstyle. On Wednesday’s episode, it was all about cherry red lips and eyeliner to highlight her blunt bangs. But one day later, she opted for a heavy eyebrow and nude lips and a sweeping updo.

The look hasn’t gone unnoticed by her fans, who have taken to Twitter to give the singer props for her chameleon-like sense of style.

Demi Lovato has brown hair and bangs. I feel like I’m in 2008.#camprock #xfactor,” @sopphiiaaxo wrote with ‏@TrizzDaleyadding, “Demi Lovato looked so stunning with her new brown hair.”

@ohhyeslovato added that no matter what Demi does, she always looks awesome. The fan wrote, “demi lovato. girl who looks flawless in brown, black, dark blond, banana blond, light blon[d], platinum blond, orange, red, blue and pinkhair.”

The majority of the comments for Demi’s new look were generally glowing and fans seem to really be embracing what she’s trying.@WessenHaus wrote, “Demi Lovato is looking beautiful tonight on THE X FACTOR!!! I’m liking the hair, girl!!!”

@Ohshidah shared, “Demi lovato so pretty with this hair colour. I want to be like her.”

One fan, ‏@DominicScott, however joked that the singer’s constant need to switch up her look reminded him of Mariah Carey‘s multiple wardrobe changes during her classic “Cribs” episode.

“Demi lovato changes her hair more than mariah carey changes her outfit in that mtv cribs episode,” the user joked.

Lovato, like many of her pop peers, frequently changes her look. Since the “X Factor” premiered back in September, the singer has already rocked a number of hairstyles including super-blond locks, pink-hued highlights, bangs and no bangs. She’s worn it up in buns, down and straight and wavy. That was all before she settled on her most recent dark look with blunt bangs.

When MTV News spoke with celebrity hairstylist Rita Hazan earlier this year, she explained why female pop stars love to change up their look so often. “Some of the ’80s is back, those vibrant colors and neon colors. I think girls are a little more relaxed into bringing their inner self out, their inner crazy. It’s not so structured, [like] you have to be pretty and fit into this mold. I love women embracing their inner crazy and making it work for them,” she said.

These days, Hazan said, “There are no rules and it doesn’t seem like it’s organized or styled,” adding, “Each person has their own individual personality and they rock [it] and it works for them. It’s nice to see women embracing themselves in that way.”

Justin Bieber, Nick Jonas Rumored For ‘X Factor’ Mentor Gigs

There’s no denying that both Justin Bieber and Nick Jonas have that something that has propelled them to the A-list, and it seems they may soon bring those special traits to the “X Factor.” Both of the singers have been rumored for mentor spots on the Fox show, kicking off on September 12.

Bieber will reportedly work with L.A. Reid to help mentor his group on the show, sources tell TMZ. The site reportedly snapped a photo of him on Monday heading to a home in the Hollywood Hills to dole out some advice for the show’s hopefuls.

Adding fuel to the fire, Bieber even sent the record executive some love on Twitter, writing, “long day but great day. @LA_Reid @ScooterBraun just like old times! Thanks.”
Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter notes that “American Idol” judge hopeful Nick Jonas will team up with his longtime pal and former “Camp Rock” co-star Demi Lovato to mentor her group when the final 16 contestants are picked.

It’s also rumored that VMA Pre-show performer Lovato will handle solo singers ages 12 to 16, Britney Spears will mentor singers 17 to 24, L.A. Reid will judge ages 25 and over, with Simon Cowell guiding the groups.

Reps for neither Bieber nor Jonas had responded to MTV News’ request for comment by press time.

While Jonas’ role on the “X Factor” has yet to be confirmed, he has confirmed that he is in talks to sit permanently at the judge’s table on “Idol” next season. It’s a move that has been fully supported by his brothers.

Kevin Jonas gushed to MTV News, “I think he would bring insight to it, unlike a lot of people. At his age, he’s been able to accomplish so much and be able to do so many kinds of things, whether it was Broadway, whether it was like pop music, whether it was producing for other artists. Like he’s done it mostly all, so I think he can have his feet planted on the ground to be a good judge.”

Does Demi Lovato Have ‘The X Factor’?

The world is still reacting to the now-confirmed news that Britney Spears and Demi Lovato will sit together at the “The X Factor” judges table this fall. While their spots on the show remain among worst-kept secrets in recent memory, these two former Disney princesses will now set out to prove they are savvy enough to judge up-and-coming talent on the Fox competition series.

While L.A. Reid, Simon Cowell and Spears bring decades of experience with them to the show, Lovato, only 19, may seem too much like a rookie on the surface. But, she’s already amassed the kind of experience performers triple her age could wish for.

She’s released three albums, which have all landed top-five spots on the Billboard 200. She’s starred on the hit Disney series, “Sonny With a Chance” and was the female lead, alongside the Jonas Brothers, in both “Camp Rock” films, which were incredibly successful for the Mouse House.

All the success at such a young age makes Lovato a perfect pick for the show. “They’re looking for female pop singers who can engage a younger audience,” Monica Herrera, a senior editor at Rolling Stone, told MTV News. “Demi seems like a good choice because she hits not just music fans, but TV fans and I think they’re kind of trying to find somebody who can hit all angles.”

She may have tons of teenage Lovatics, but Keith Caulfield, associate director of charts/retail at Billboard, added that she still hasn’t yet permeated the adult market, which makes this the right time to make this move.

“I thought it was interesting choice just because, I mean, she is a star, but she seems a bit under the radar to a degree so this is a great look for her because it’s going to elevate her visibility and give her a whole new audience and a great platform to introduce new material,” he said. “I think it’s a great opportunity for her to really expand her fanbase. I think a lot of people are going to discover Demi for the very first time.”

And, that’s why, Herrera adds, she needs to strike while the iron is hot. “I think it’s definitely a smart move; I don’t think she can afford to wait at this point. I think that is kind of a way to jumpstart it and really get herself out there,” she explained. “Obviously she’s gonna want to put out an album timed to the fall show. She’ll have the team behind her to really kind of maximize this opportunity and put out a single and an album that will kind of get the lift that she really needs right now.”

Caulfield notes that Lovato will serve as the perfect answer to Spears. “Demi, considering her history and frankly her years of experience, she’s gone through the ringer,” he said. “Demi is probably going to have more realistic commentary, probably not harsh but probably coming from the point of view of ‘I did this before.’ Certainly her and Britney have the X factor, that something about them that makes them stars, it’s hard to pin down. I think it’s going to be good. I think they’re both interesting choices.”

So for anyone wondering if Lovato is still too young to mentor, well, Herrera says they should put those concerns aside. “I really think it does [help that she's young], especially since they are skewing younger and younger with the contestants. I think someone like Demi would have been perfect for someone like Rachel Crow [who competed last season]. She obviously knows what it’s like to be thrust into the spotlight in that way from a really young age,” she said. “I really think that she can be that guiding force.”

Backstreet Boys, ‘NSYNC Out Of Battle Of The Boy Bands

It was a highly unpredictable first round of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands, with perceived favorites Backstreet Boys and ‘NSYNC out of the competition.

Irish boy band Westlife ousted BSB, and British group 5ive took out ‘NSYNC by an extremely thin margin.

Many other matchups went down to the wire, including New Kids on the Block, who narrowly avoided an upset by Take That. O-Town received a late rally from their fans, giving them the edge over the Jackson 5. New boy bands like One Direction, the Wanted and Big Time Rush will move on to the next round, but, as you can see, it seems as if no one is safe.

So who remains in the competition? Let’s take a look at the next round of matchups!

Midwest
Westlife vs. O-Town: Westlife proved to be a real contender in this competition after beating the Backstreet Boys in round one. The group — which is about to kick off a farewell tour in May — seems to have a die-hard fanbase that may prove tough for O-Town to overcome. But don’t count them out just yet: They also had a tough first-round matchup in the Jackson 5, and fans may still be hoping for a reunion from these guys, since last year, four of the five original members announced they wanted to get back together.

The Beatles vs. New Kids on the Block: NKOTB barely made it through to the second round and now have to face an even tougher competitor: The Beatles. The New Kids had much of their success in the late’80s and early ’90s and have sold 80 million records worldwide. Pretty impressive, but the Beatles are known as the original boy band and are the best-selling band in history. Let’s hope NKOTB are “Hangin’ Tough.”

East
Jonas Brothers vs. Hanson: It’s not only a battle of the boy bands; it’s a battle of the brothers! Hanson and the Jonas Brothers will face off in a touch matchup in the next round. Both groups, consisting of three brothers, are known for their infectious pop hits and the fact that they all play their own instruments. Hanson received massive success in the mid- to late ’90s with single “MMMBop,” which hit #1 in 27 countries. After marriages, babies and several albums, the group is very much still together and will be touring this summer. With four LPs in just as many years, the Jonas Brothers have sold 8 million albums worldwide and became a household name after starring in two Disney Channel movies, “Camp Rock” and “Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam.” The guys took a break to work on solo projects but have been working on a follow-up to their 2009 album, Lines, Vines and Trying Times.

LFO vs. 5ive: Both of these boy bands barely edged out their competition, which should make for an interesting second-round matchup. 5ive found success overseas with 11 top 10 singles and four top 10 albums in the U.K. before they called it quits in 2001, and LFO became popular in the U.S. during the wave of late-’90s boy bands and had two top 10 hits, including “Summer Girls.” This one may go down to the wire again with both groups having very loyal fanbases.

West
The Wanted vs. the Monkees: British boy band, the Wanted have certainly gained momentum here in the States over the past few months. The group released a much-anticipated U.S. EP earlier this week and premiered the “Chasing the Sun” video on “MTV First: The Wanted.” They will have to see if this energy can carry them through when they face off against the Monkees. The group enjoyed success in the mid-’60s with their hit television show and songs like “I’m a Believer” and experienced a revival in the mid-’80s with a performance at the 1986 MTV Video Music Awards. The band continued to tour off and on until 2011 but lost member Davy Jones earlier this year when he died of a severe heart attack.

Big Time Rush vs. Boyz II Men: Both of these groups easily made it past their first-round competition, but it will most likely be a closer matchup in round two. Big Time Rush may have a younger audience voting for them, since they gained success with their hit Nickelodeon television show. Boyz II Men, on the other hand, have longevity on their side, being that they are the most successful RB group of all time.

South
One Direction vs. IM5: Even though both of these boy bands are relatively new to the music scene, it seems they already have a lot in common. One Direction were assembled by Simon Cowell on the U.K. version of “The X Factor,” and IM5 were recently created by “American Idol” creator Simon Fuller, Perez Hilton and creative director and choreographer Jamie King.

NKOTBSB vs. Mindless Behavior: With the Backstreet Boys out of the competition, BSB fans can still vote for NKOTBSB. The New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys supergroup released a compilation album in 2011 consisting of each of their hit songs and two joint singles including “Don’t Turn Out the Lights.” The group is overseas on the European leg of their tour. But don’t ignore the power behind the fans of Mindless Behavior. The group, which has actually toured with the Backstreet Boys, just released the single “Hello” in March.

Voting in round two of MTV’s Battle of the Boy Bands runs until noon ET on Monday, April 30. Winners are determined by fan votes, so if your favorite band made the cut, make sure you keep voting.
