Lauryn Hill Thanks Fans For Trying To Keep Her Out Of Prison

By James Montgomery

Earlier this week, Lauryn Hill was

sentenced to three months in prison after pleading guilty to tax evasion charges. As you’d probably expect, Hill had plenty to say at her sentencing hearing, telling judge Madeline Cox Arleo that she had earned nearly $600 million — for other people — over the course of her career, yet was forced to live “a life of sacrifice” and went on to compare her situation to slavery. And perhaps her words worked: after all, she was facing as much as three years behind bars.

Then again, according to her lawyer, Hill has already repaid more than $900,000 of the reported $1.8 million she owes in taxes, which might explain the judge’s leniency. Or, it might have had something to do with the scores of Hill’s fans who wrote the judge letters on her behalf, from as far away as China, France and the United Kingdom. And late Tuesday night, Hill took to her Facebook page to thank them all by name.

“I want to extend a sincere thank you to the following people, who wrote letters to the judge on my behalf,” Hill wrote, before publishing a list of nearly 30 names that included Alicia Keys and Stevie Wonder. “I also want to thank all of my family, friends, business associates, and fans who have called, emailed, sent texts, and posted messages of concern, encouragement, and support. I appreciate the well wishes, and I thank you for your prayers.”

Hill — who must report to prison by July 8 — closed by adding that she’ll have more to say in the coming days, saying she “did not want to further delay expressing my appreciation.”

Keanu Reeves’ ‘Man Of Tai Chi’ Trailer Comes Loaded With Action

Keanu Reeves Man Of Tai Chi Trailer Comes Loaded With Action

When Keanu Reeves directs a movie called “Man of Tai Chi,” you better believe it’s going to come loaded with tai chi. Reeves debuted the first trailer for his directorial debut at the Beijing International Film Festival, and the teaser for his martial arts epic comes heavy on the awesome action sequences and light on the plot.

It makes sense that this movie will have excellent action choreography and will show off Reeves’ love of tai chi. Tiger Hu Chen, a martial arts trainer on “The Matrix” trilogy, stars in the movie with legendary action choreographer Yuen Woo-ping designing the moves. As they proved in the Wachowski movies, they are definitely experts in creating impressive action sequences. Reeves, of course, both directs and stars in the movie.

Still, don’t expect to get too up-close and personal with the fighters in this film. MTV News caught up with Reeves after he wrapped principal photography on “Man of Tai Chi” and he revealed that he was unable to use the highly articulate and precise mechanical arm with a camera in this movie like he revealed was his intention in a proof of concept video.

“It was really exciting to go into this idea. I got some feedback from [the reaction to the proof of concept]. It turns out though, ultimately, because we were filming in China, it was a lot simpler to do the proof of concept than to actually use it in the film,” Reeves said. “One of the events that happened that was tough was that I wasn’t able to use tool in the movie.”

Reeves still said he was inspired by the way that arm worked in how he filmed the movie, though. “It was tough. It was just too big and too much. We had to ship it to China. All sorts of practical consideration ran into the vision and the dream,” he said. “It certainly influenced the way that we went forward in terms of shooting some of the fight scenes in terms of the organicness and movement of how we shot some of the fight scenes. I just couldn’t go on top. [laughs] I couldn’t do an overhead shot with no cut into a close up.”

“Man of Tai Chi” does not yet have a US release date.

Exclusive: Keanu Reeves Couldn’t Use High-Tech Rig For ‘Man Of Tai Chi’

Last we heard from Keanu Reeves and his martial arts epic of a directorial debut “Man of Tai Chi,” he had wrapped principal photography, which was exciting news to anyone who saw a proof of concept video that surfaced online last summer.

For his fight sequences, Reeves intended to use a highly articulate and precise mechanical arm to take the camera above, around, and into the faces of his on-screen combatants. The results of the technique, which we saw briefly in the proof of concept, were impressive enough to make “Man of Tai Chi” something to eagerly anticipate.

But MTV News got some bad news from Reeves when speaking with him about his latest film “generation Um….” It turns out that he wasn’t able to use the rig to film the fight sequences in “Man of Tai Chi.” Find out why after the jump!

Thankfully, you can’t go from shooting an intricate fight scene with a high-tech mechanical arm to just filming the thing straight on. Reeves said his experience with the arm influenced how they eventually shot the scenes.

What Is ‘Catfish’? Manti Te’o Found Out The Hard Way

The puzzling Manti Te’o hoax unearthed by Deadspin stirred up quite the controversy earlier this week, and it wasn’t long before fans connected the news with “Catfish,” MTV‘s hit show that uncovers deceiving online relationships.

With even national media outlets linking Te’o directly to “Catfish,” we figured now is as good a time as any to help explain what Catfishing means and how it became the go-to term to describe sketchy Internet trickery.

The origin of the term, which also has its own entry in the Urban Dictionary, can be traced back to the film that inspired the show. Nev Schulman, the subject of the indie documentary and host of the MTV show, fell in love with online, but when he finally went to meet her, he discovered that his would-be love was really a troubled, 40-year-old mother. Instead of running away from the situation, Nev and brother Max stayed to interact with the woman and her family.

“When I finally met the 40-year-old mom, we also met her husband and he told us this amazing story,” Schulman explained. “They used to take these live cod in these giant vats on ships from Alaska to China, but by the time the fish got to China, their flesh would become mushy and tasteless, so some guy had the bright idea to put catfish in the vats with the cod to chase them around and keep them moving, and he finished by saying that he thanks God for the catfish because life would be droll, boring and dull if we didn’t have someone nipping at our fins.”

That story inspired Schulman and the “Catfish” filmmakers to name their project after those catfish, and not long after the film was released, the term appeared in the Urban Dictionary. “A Catfish is someone who pretends to be someone they’re not using Facebook or other social media to create false identities,” reads the definition. “Particularly to pursue deceptive online romances.”

With the growing popularity of the MTV show, the term has become a verb for people who describe being victimized by online posers, i.e. “I was Catfished!” and the usage has increased exponentially in the wake of the Te’o hoax.

[News] DX News Bits: MC Eiht Prepares EP, Block Starz Music Launches New Website, Rise-Ascend & Direction Lead Petition

MC Eiht is releasing a new EP, Block Starz Music launches a new website, and Rise-Ascend Direction start a new petition.

With a stellar guest verse on Kendrick Lamar’s “m.A.A.d City,” Compton legend MC Eiht reminded listeners where the CPT got its style. Now, according to a recent press release, the Compton’s Most Wanted alum is preparing to drop his newest EP.

This December 31, MC Eiht will release his latest EP Keep It Hood via BlueStamp Music. The EP, Eiht’s first solo effort since 2007′s Representin’, is produced by Brenk Sinatra and boasts the single “The Reign,” featuring DJ Premier.

Keep It Hood will precede Eiht’s fourteenth full length solo LP Which Way Iz West, due out this spring 2013.

In other news, it looks like indie label Block Starz Music will be going through a number of reorganizations in the new year. In addition to a new website URL, the famed Indiana imprint will be parting ways with its CEO.

In a recent press release, Block Starz‘s founder Bayer Mack announced that the firm’s German CEO Kai Denninger will be parting ways with the company effective immediately. Mack also revealed that Block Starz‘s website URL has changed to BlockStarz.TV, which will expand its focus to showing more independent music videos and original web series.

Kai Denninger will no longer be with the company,” said Mack. “Kai was instrumental in helping us build the Block Starz Music brand. He will be greatly missed and we wish him nothing but the best in all his future endeavors.”

BlockStarz.TV‘s senior Vice President of Music and Television Peppy Johnson added, “Artists and projects signed to Block Starz Music will always take precedent, but our new website and personnel changes will allow us to collaborate with and showcase a wider range of talent. The goal for our company’s next four years is to make BlockStarz.TV a leading video distribution outlet for all forms of independent entertainment producers.”

Finally, Rise-Ascend and Direction are spearheading a new petition to stop the Chinese government’s practice of organ harvesting, and the duo is looking for the Hip Hop community’s support.

The duo has launched a new petition through the official White House website to stop the Chinese government’s practice using imprisoned Fulan Gong practitioners as living organ donors. The petition requires at least 25,000 signatures before the White House officially responds to it.

“The vicious practice of organ harvesting taking place in China today is certainly a crime against humanity and something that everyone should be aware of,” Rise-Ascend explained in an exclusive statement to DX. “That said, I don’t think many people would underestimate the power of the youth’s voice and the global hip-hop communities potential to quickly raise awareness about this important issue. I only hope that we can stand up as one and show the world that the killing of innocent people and the selling of their internal organs on the black market is something that our generation will absolutely not tolerate. This is in fact something that can save lives.”

Listeners can sign the petition over at the White House’s website.

Where Do Obama And Romney Stand On Your Issues?

The talk is over, and tomorrow, voters are taking to the polls across the nation to make their presidential picks. For young voters, a lot of big issues are on the line, including a few, such as health care and the national debt, which will impact their generation more than any other.

We already gave you a look at where President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney stand on paying off college debt, gay marriage and reproductive rights, so here are a few more issues that might help the 45 million young voters (ages 18 to 29) make their choice:

Women’s Rights
Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act as the first bill of his administration, aimed at helping women fight pay discrimination. If one of the older justices on the Supreme Court retires, the president would almost certainly nominate a justice that would protect the landmark abortion decision Roe v. Wade.

Romney has vowed to repeal the health care laws that require employers to cover birth control for female employees and eliminate copays for birth control. He thinks organizations providing health care for their employees shouldn’t have to pay for what they don’t believe in.

Health Care
In June, the Supreme Court ruled that the Affordable Care Act (better known as Obamacare) was constitutional. The act ensures that you get to stay on your parents’ health insurance until you’re 26 years old. It also says you can’t be penalized for pre-existing conditions and don’t have to pay a copay for birth control. This is all, of course, as long as you get insurance, which the government will help facilitate financially; otherwise, you pay a penalty.

Romney has vowed to repeal and replace Obamacare as soon as he gets elected. He’s expressed interest in maintaining some provisions of the law, though he has not expressed which ones, pledging that pre-existing conditions will still be covered under his new plan. His plan focuses on states setting up their own versions of health care acts that would be overseen at a state, not federal level.

Foreign Policy and National Security
Under Obama, the U.S. has ended the war in Iraq and slowly decreased its presence in Afghanistan, where they’re expected to end combat operations at the end of 2014. Serious challenges remain in a corruption-riddled Afghanistan, particularly in the violence-stricken southern region of Kandahar.

In killing Osama Bin Laden and assassinating many Al Qaeda leaders through controversial drone strikes, Obama “has refocused George Bush‘s ‘war on terror’ more squarely on terrorists,” as The Economist noted in its final evaluation of the candidates.

In the third presidential debate, it was difficult to discern significant differences in the two candidates’ view on foreign policy. Both have publicly advocated a pragmatic and conflict-averse approach to Egypt and Syria. Romney has vowed to take a more aggressive approach with China and Iran. He’s labeled China as a currency manipulator. He’s also indicated he’d be more willing to support military conflict in Iran, alongside Israel.

President Obama: We’re ‘Not Moving Fast’ Enough On Climate Change‪

One of the major topics that has gotten the least amount of attention during the long presidential campaign is climate change. Before the devastation wrought by superstorm Sandy on the East Coast— which New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has said is proof that global climate change is real— MTV News sat down with President Obama to discuss how he would approach this pressing issue in his second term if re-elected.

Pointing out that the environment was mentioned in at least one debate in every presidential race since 1988 before being omitted from this year’s three debates, during last week’s “Ask Obama Live: An MTV Interview With the President”
special MTV News’ Sway Calloway asked the president if he would make good on the promises he made during his first run for the White House to focus significant resources on environmental issues.

“We’re not moving as fast as we need to,” Obama said. “This is an issue that future generations, MTV viewers, are going to have to be dealing with even more than the older generation is. So this is a critical issue.”

The president said he was surprised it did not come up in one of the debates because he feels that there is a “huge” contrast between his plan to deal with what some climate scientists have called a dire situation and that of his opponent, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney.

Governor Romney says he believes in climate change, that’s different than a lot of the members of his own party who just deny it completely, but he says he’s not sure that man-made causes are the reason,” said Obama. “I believe scientists, who say that we’re putting too much carbon emissions into the atmosphere and it’s heating the planet. And it’s going to have a severe effect.”

For that reason, Obama noted, his administration has taken a number of steps over the past few years aimed at slowing down U.S. carbon emissions. Among the actions he cited: doubling fuel efficiency standards on cars and trucks (the first increase in 30 years in fuel mileage standards) and a doubling of clean energy production (wind, solar, biofuels).

These acts, he said, will not only take “huge” amounts of carbon out of the atmosphere, but also decrease reliance on foreign fuel sources, save Americans money at the pump and allow private homes and companies to get electricity from clean sources.

As he deals with the aftermath of Sandy, New York mayor Michael Bloomberg cited Obama’s leadership on the environment in endorsing the president on Thursday.

“We need leadership from the White House — and over the past four years, President Barack Obama has taken major steps to reduce our carbon consumption, including setting higher fuel-efficiency standards for cars and trucks,” said Bloomberg, who also attributed the enormity of this week’s storm to changes in the climate.

“The next step is buildings and really ramp up our efficiency in buildings,” Obama said of his future plans. “If we had the same energy efficiency as Japan, we would cut our energy use by about 20 percent … that means we’d be taking a whole lot of carbon out of our atmosphere.” If we do that, the president added, we can meet the targets he negotiated with other countries at a U.N. climate change conference in Copenhagen in 2009 to bring our carbon emissions down by 17 percent while creating new green jobs.

“In order for us to solve the whole problem, though,” he said. “We’re going to have to have some technological breakthroughs, because countries like China and India … they’re building coal-fired power plants. They feel that they have to prioritize getting people out of poverty ahead of climate change. So what we have to do is help them, and help ourselves, by continuing to put money into research and technology about how do we get the new sources of power that are really going to make a difference?”

RZA Lines Up Next Two Directing Gigs

6ebfb RZA Man Iron Fists RZA Lines Up Next Two Directing Gigs

The Man With the Iron Fists” hasn’t even hit theaters yet, and already RZA has his next two movies lined up.

The Hollywood Reporter has the news that the Wu-Tang Clan frontman-turned director will next helm the long-gestating biopic “Genghis Khan” and then will tackle the action thriller “No Man’s Land.” His directorial debut, “The Man With the Iron Fists,” comes out Friday, so this news is pretty good evidence that the film is going to be as good as we hope it will be.

Genghis Khan” is written by “Apocalypse Now” scribe John Milius and has been in the works for a while now. Milius is also executive producing the film and had once been slated to direct it. The flick is preparing to shoot in China next year, which is the same country where RZA shot “Man With the Iron Fists.”

After he’s done with that, RZA is expected to move on to “No Man’s Land.” That script was written by Trey Ellis and David Klass and “centers on a man who steals a powerful criminal’s diamond that soon proves to be far more valuable than initially thought. With the help of a dancer, he attempts to stay alive and cash in on the jewel.” The entire story takes place over the course of one night.

“The Man With the Iron Fists” is due out on November 2. The official synopsis reads, “Since his arrival in China‘s Jungle Village, the town’s blacksmith (RZA) has been forced by radical tribal factions to create elaborate tools of destruction. When the clans’ brewing war boils over, the stranger channels an ancient energy to transform himself into a human weapon. As he fights alongside iconic heroes and against soulless villains, one man must harness this power to become savior of his adopted people.”

Are you glad RZA has made the transition to directing? Which of these three films are you most excited for? Tell us in the comments section below or on Twitter!
