[News] Drake’s Club Paradise Tour Earns The Rapper A Spot On The "Top 50 Worldwide Tours" List

Drake secures the Number 19 spot on the “Top 50 Worldwide Tours” list thanks to his Club Paradise Tour.

On top of boasting quite the roster of artists, Drake’s Club Paradise Tour has just earned itself a coveted spot on PollStarPro.com’s “Top 50 Worldwide Tours” of 2012 list. Drake clenched the Number 19 spot on the list and subsequently became the only Hip Hop artist featured on the tour roundup.

According to SOHH.com, the Young Money artist earned a cool $40 million thanks to the Club Paradise Tour which featured special appearances from the likes of J. Cole, 2 Chainz, A$AP Rocky, and Kendrick Lamar.

While the $40 million made during the Club Paradise Tour was enough to put Drake comfortably among the top 20 tour moneymakers, the rapper was still a ways off from Madonna, the top earner on the list, who made a hefty $296 million thanks to her tour.

Other artists featured on the “Top 50 Worldwide Tours” list include Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jennifer Lopez, Justin Bieber, and The Black Keys.

812f8 theweeknd1 The Weeknd Finally Signed A Record Deal To Release Trilogy

The Weeknd has finally signed a new record deal and he will release his first studio-backed project this fall, packaging his three popular mixtapes as the Trilogy.

He’s built a fiercely dedicated fanbase with the release of his acclaimed mixtapes over the past year, most notably 2011 fire starterHouse of Balloons.

Abel Tesfaye, the 22-year-old RB prodigy, has been highly championed by hometown hero Drake, while remaining fairly mysterious and avoiding interviews, but that might change with his new deal. Tesfaye and his formerly independent XO collective have formed a new partnership with Republic that will be cemented with the November 13 release of Trilogy. That includes all three of his popular mixtapes — House of Balloons,Thursday and Echoes of Silence — mixed and mastered, with the addition of previously unreleased songs.

He first announced plans to reissue the mixtapes late last year, tweeting to fans on Christmas, “I can’t wait to re-release The Trilogy as a package, re-mastered for you to collect with bonus features…#2012.” “Wicked Games” is set to be the first Trilogy single available on iTunes, ahead of the project’s release date.

Back in May, during the Houston stop on his Club Paradise TourDrake told MTV News that he and the Weeknd, with their respective OVO and XO crews, were working out a potential deal. “As far as on paper, it’s all being worked out, but that’s not really what counts anyway. What counts to me is the fact that the affiliation is so known, and that’s all I really care about,” he said, adding, “I want to continue being involved in his career and vice versa and keep making music together, because you take songs like ‘Crew Love‘ and ‘The Zone,’ that’s what people wait all night to hear,” he said.

No word yet on whether Drake had any input in the Weeknd’s new deal with Republic.

T.I. And 2 Chainz Take Over ‘RapFix Live’

My, what a ride it’s been for 2 Chainz. After grinding it out in the underground scene for a few years, the Playaz Circle rapper saw his solo star soar to unbelievable heights over the past few months, thanks to hit singles, notable guest verses, endless shows and, let’s face it — that charisma.

All that hard work will culminate with his Def Jam debut Based on a T.R.U Story, due this week. 2 Chainz will celebrate with an appearance on Wednesday’s episode of “RapFix Live,” and what would an ATL party be without the king, T.I.?

2 Chainz will join Sway for a special episode of “RapFix Live,” guiding viewers through his anticipated album, which includes features from Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Drake and many more. Following the release his popular fall 2011 mixtape T.R.U. REALigon, 2 Chainz hit the road, performing sold-out shows across the country, only breaking to add his in-demand verses to hits like G.O.O.D. Music’s “Mercy” and Nicki Minaj‘s “Beez in the Trap.” With a major co-sign from Kanye West, who affiliates 2 Chainz with his elite crew and proudly announced on Twitter that the Atlanta rapper is now “charging 100k for a verse,” the sky became the limit.

2 Chainz joined Drake on his cross-country Club Paradise Tour this spring, only to wrap that and link up with Nicki Minaj on her Pink Friday Tour, currently under way. It’s a wonder that the “Spend It” rapper even found time to record his album.

While 2 Chainz celebrates his major-label debut, the Kang of the South will drop by to give an update on his current endeavors — but where to begin? Tip is working on his eighth solo album, Trouble Man, which he hopes to complete by year’s end, but he’s also filming episodes for the new season of his VH1 reality show “T.I. Tiny: The Family Hustle,” while promoting the Starz series “Boss” and building up his revamped Grand Hustle label. Got all that? Good.

Catch 2 Chainz and T.I. on “RapFix Live,” Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on RapFix.MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtag #RapFixLive. Send your questions for the artists @MTVRapFix

Chris Brown/ Drake Bar Brawl: Meek Mill Speaks Out

Chris Brown‘s and Drake’s reps have issued statements about the NYC brawl between their entourages last week, but so far, the only direct words from the artists themselves have been via Twitter. Brown and MMG rapper Meek Mill have both tweeted about the incident in the past few days, but now Meek is finally speaking up about what he saw in the club that night as he stood next to Drake.

In an interview with XXL, Meek was asked if he threw a bottle during the melee, which left Chris Brown, his bodyguard and several club patrons wounded. “F— no,” the Philly rapper responded, adding that Drake and Brown didn’t either. “Chris and Drake, them two was there, but it’s other people that be around that take sh– to the next level,” he said. “Things just happen in the club. I seen girls in there throwing bottles, all types of sh–. All types of people. I never seen Chris Brown or Drake throw a bottle, and I was there.”

In the hours following the brawl, Meek’s brief tweets didn’t add any clarity to the situation. He began with the coy line, “It wasn’t me…. (shaggy voice) lol,” and later responded to messages from Roscoe Dash, who blasted him along with Drake and Brown for fighting. Meek snapped back, “You gotta chill b4 you b tweeting my name in some sh– i wasn’t even really in! Stay in ya lane!”

Later in the day, Brown — who had already deleted his initial tweets and the photo of his injury, which he posted right after the brawl — sent a follow up message, writing, “Me and @MeekMill ain’t on that bullsh–. Real respect Real….”

Although the statement seemed odd, right after reports that Meek had played a role in instigating the fight, Meek confirmed to XXL that things were all good between him and Brown. “What [Brown] tweeted was just that me and Meek Mill ain’t got no problem,” he said. “I talked to him immediately after that, on the phone afterwards, like immediately. There’s nothing there, this-that-and-the-third. Chris Brown be in clubs. He be around situations like this. Things get out of hand. That don’t mean it’s out of hand with me and him or whoever, not even him and Drake.”

Drake made his first public appearance since the brawl at his Club Paradise Tour stop in New York on Saturday night, bringing Meek along with him, but he made no real statement on what went down last week. Instead, he told fans that he’d had a rough couple of days but was in a much better mood by the time he hit the stage. Details from that night are still being revealed. The nightclub where the incident took place was shuttered this weekend, and clubgoers present at the time are reporting injuries from the brawl.

No Drake Arrest Planned For Tonight, NYPD Confirm

Despite numerous reports to the contrary, the NYPD confirmed to MTV News there are no plans to arrest Drake before his show in Long Island, New York, tonight and the investigation into the YMCMB star’s nightclub brawl with Chris Brown is still ongoing.

But that doesn’t mean authorities are taking things lightly before tonight’s concert: TMZ is reporting that New York State Police are calling for extra security at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theatre following the Thursday morning scuffle between Brown’s and Drizzy’s entourages in a New York City club.

Reps for Drake have maintained that the Toronto MC did nothing wrong. On Friday night, Cash Money CEO Birdman weighed in on the incident. “To me, Drizzy ain’t did nothin’ wrong, he ain’t done nothin’ wrong to nobody. He’s just doin’ great music,” he told MTV News exclusively. “He’s not a reckless guy out there just wildin’ out; he’s a humble kid makin’ great music.”

There has been a ton of finger-pointing following the brawl, which reportedly involved members of both Drake’s and Breezy’s respective crews. Brown’s lawyer Mark Geragos has been very vocal in implicating Drake as the main culprit in the incident. “I have turned over evidence that it was Drake who instigated this,” he told the New York Post. “The evidence makes it clear that Chris is the victim of all this.

“I believe the police are building a case against Drake and his thugs,” he continued.

The police did confirm with MTV News that the case was ongoing but would not confirm that they were ready to arrest the Take Care MC or anyone in connection to the brawl. Coincidently, the manager of the W.I.P. nightclub (where the incident occurred) was arrested Friday due to existing warrants unrelated to the incident.

Drake has big plans for tonight’s concert, which is a scheduled part of his critically acclaimed Club Paradise Tour. During an interview with DJ Scoob Doo’s BreadOverBed.com, Drizzy said he plans to outdo Hot 97′s Summer Jam concert. After a radio DJ insulted Nicki Minaj just hours before she was scheduled to perform at the June 3 concert in New Jersey, YMCMB boss Lil Wayne pulled the plug on his label’s all-star performance. “I’ve got everyone you would want to see, plus people that you wouldn’t expect to see,” Drake said.

Chris Brown And Drake’s Fight: Why Did It Happen?

By Rebecca Thomas

It wasn’t difficult to tell that tension had been brewing between Drake and Chris Brown for sometime, but on Wednesday things erupted when the two stars got into a full out brawl at NYC nightclub W.I.P. What are the series of events that led up to the unfortunate showdown? More details inside.

Members of MTV News’ hip-hop brain trust were under the same roof as Drizzy just before he turned up at WIP nightclub and things went left. In another coincidence, earlier that day, we welcomed Breezy to the newsroom, where he teased his Fortune LP … and praised Drake — without any prompting from us. We’d be wrong not to share with you, so we’ve detailed what we saw in the 24 hours leading up to the bloody confrontation.

Fresh off the New Jersey leg of his Club Paradise Tour, Drake headed to the Sin City gentleman’s club in the Bronx, where Maybach Music‘s entire starting lineup had gathered to drink to their accomplishment, namely the imminent release of the Self Made 2 album. Rozay was there in all his bearded glory, and so was Drizzy’s Paradise tourmate Meek Mill; all were on hand to give industry insiders and fans a preview of their compilation.

The Toronto spitter’s fascination with the Maliahs of the world is well-documented, and he looked right at home when got to Sin City. In a bit of cinematic timing, he strolled in just as his verse in “Stay Schemin‘ ” came over the speakers and a new band of pole-clutching, cream-complexioned girls rotated onto one of the V.I.P. stages.

Flanked by security, the YMCMB star greeted well-wishers and then made his way to a back area. Maybe he was looking forward to letting off steam after the energetic 90-minute set we caught on Tuesday in Jersey. But Drake had just lost his close friend Christopher “Lewds” Natalio, too, so maybe spending a couple ones was just the prescription.

Meanwhile, early Wednesday afternoon, at around 1:15 p.m. ET, Brown paid a visit to our 1515 Broadway headquarters. Dressed in Jordans and a white Commes des Garçons polo, he bounced into the interview room with girlfriend Karrueche Tran trailing quietly behind. Breezy’s bodyguard, Big Pat — who later suffered head injuries in the melee at WIP — was also with Brown.

While we set up mics and cameras, Chris let us take a good look at his inked-up sleeves. Soon the topic turned to his rapping and how much we liked the Fortune track “Till I Die.” The Virginia crooner told us he’s in a ’90s-rap state of mind when it comes to fashion (check his “Today” show vintage, but firmly in this decade when it comes to music. He grew animated explaining why he felt at ease rapping and singing on a record these days, citing the reception for “Look at Me Now” and the impact of a certain Canadian actor-turned-rapper.

“I think the culture is starting to be very different and be [accepting of] diversity,” he said. “You don’t have to be the hardest of the hardest rapper or the toughest of the toughest guys to make a statement … as far as your music. … So with Justin and me and you’ve got Drake and other people that rap that aren’t the DMXs of the world — it’s a different day.

“I think people are just listening to the music,” he added, and not just giving rappers a thug litmus test or judging whether they live a street “lifestyle.”

Kind words indeed, but tension was brewing. We haven’t mentioned Rihanna yet but it’s nearly impossible to talk about Chris Brown and Drake these days without the Bajan stunner’s name coming up. Brown is the ex who did her wrong and Drizzy, the collaborator who once rapped about wanting to do right by her, who would have accepted sparks over fireworks with her. To hear the blogs tell it, the brawl was over Rih, and it was a collision waiting to happen. A tug of war over who can claim her erupted with Meek making the triangle a very complicated quad, according to the gossips.

All it took was for all of the players to touch down in place, and on Wednesday night, they did.

2 Chainz Travels ‘Super-Light On Rings’ After Airport Arrest

2 Chainz found himself in trouble with airport security while trying to catch an outbound flight from New York two weeks ago, and after his brush with the law, the Atlanta rapper is being more careful than ever.

2 Chainz was arrested at LaGuardia Airport on May 22 while trying to make his way to North Carolina to rejoin Drake on the Club Paradise Tour. But a four-finger gold ring in his carry-on bag was flagged by security, who considered the ring to be brass knuckles and took 2 Chainz into custody. He was charged with misdemeanor possession of a weapon in the fourth degree. But don’t bet on this ever happening again.

“No more rings. [I'm] super-light on the rings,” 2 Chainz told MTV News backstage at Hot 97′s Summer Jam concert over the weekend. “I learn from all my mistakes. I don’t think I made a mistake, but who wants to go through that type of stuff again? Me just coming back through the same airport again was kind of traumatic. It’s a hurdle that we jumped over. Now we moving on.”

After 2 Chainz’s arrest, several members of the hip-hop community took to Twitter to defend him, explaining that he’d sported the harmless ring at a photo shoot just days earlier.

“They tried to assassinate my character, they tried to assassinate my swag,” the “Spend It” rapper explained in an interview immediately following his release. “It was just a negative dilemma earlier where someone misconstrued a piece of jewelry for a weapon and stuff.”

2 Chainz hit the stage at the annual Summer Jam concert in New Jersey on Sunday, joining Big Sean and Young Jeezy during their sets to perform “Mercy” and “SupaFreak.” His debut album, Based on a T.R.U. Story, is set to drop on August 14, led by the single “No Lie,” featuring Drake.

Drake Remains ‘Confident’ Despite Criticism

By Rob Markman

Drake is no stranger to criticism (or even the occasional subliminal shot) but the Toronto rapper doesn’t let the naysayers get to him. During the Houston, Texas stop on his  Club Paradise tour Drake chatted with MTV News about how he handles the negative feedback.

“There will be days when I walk in an arena and people will cheer and then there might be days when I walk in an arena and people might boo, but it all sounds the same to me because it’s all just noise that lets me know that I’m relevant,” Drake said, sharing some words of wisdom that was given to him by boxing champ Floyd Mayweather.

“I don’t get booed,” Drizzy continued. “I don’t face that. I mean he faces that challenge but my challenge is more with social media and open opinions and people just feeling like they need to talk.”

Drake’s music, and just about his every move, is dissected through the media as well as on Twitter and blogs. The fact that he sings as well as raps has made him a target for those looking to take away his hip-hop cred. Still, the “Headlines” MC remains one of rap’s most successful draws today.

Common called him out the OVO general on “Sweet,” a single from his 2011 album The Dreamer/The Believer. Many also believe that G.O.O.D Music’s Pusha T has also been throwing subliminal jabs at Drake, first on last year’s “Don’t F–k With Me” freestyle, then on his “Sweet” freestyle. Pusha has gone on record saying that he wasn’t dissing Drake and he actually likes the Toronto MC’s music, but after Push dropped his new single “Exodus 23:1,” speculation began to swirl that he was again taking aim and Drake and his mentor Lil Wayne. Weezy responded with a poignant tweet: “F— pusha t and anybody that love em.”

It is important to note that when he sat with Sway, Drake did not address Pusha T or any other rappers directly, but he did speak about his detractors in a very general sense. “It’s important for me to let my fans know I really don’t care. I’m confident,” he said sternly. “I love the music I make and the videos I make and the people I associate with and every decision I’ve ever made.”

For Drake, taking the stage on each stop of his Club Paradise Tour is all the assurance that he needs. “Just to let [fans] know that I don’t care about anything else outside of this right here,” he said from backstage at Houston’s Toyota Center, referencing the army of fans waiting for him to perform. “That other stuff, hiding behind computers and yip-yapping all day on radio stations, it’s like that’s cool, man, for points and popularity, but at the end of the day, there is still 15,000 people here.”
