281x211 Jay Z Launches Roc Nation Sports By Signing Yankee Robinson Cano

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy

Jay-Z is reintroducing himself…as a sports agent. In the newest branch of his ever-growing empire, Jay-Z has started Roc Nation Sports and is signing New York Yankees player Robinson Cano as his first client.

ESPN reports Roc Nation is partnering with talent agency Creative Artists Agency (CAA).

“Because of my love of sports, it was a natural progression to form a company where we can help top athletes in various sports the same way we have been helping artists in the music industry for years,” Jay-Z said in a statement.

Cano added, “At this point in my career, I am ready to take a more active role in my endeavors on and off the field. I am confident that the pairing of Roc Nation Sports and CAA Sports will be essential in helping me accomplish my short- and long-term goals. I am making this important decision now so I can keep my focus on helping the Yankees succeed in 2013, while minimizing any distractions for me and my teammates.”

Sources tell ESPN that Jigga is planning to be a certified agent, first in baseball and eventually in basketball and football. In order to represent clients in basketball, he would have to give up his minority share of the Brooklyn Nets, which apparently he’s open to doing.

The dynasty can’t be stopped.

Lil Wayne’s Miami Heat Rant: Did He Go Too Far?

Lil Wayne’s Miami Heat Rant: Did He Go Too Far?

By Maurice Bobb

After Lil Wayne’s seething anti-Miami Heat rant went viral, one thing’s for sure: Weezy F. Baby still knows how to move the meter in popular culture. Tunechi’s scathing dress down of the NBA and the defending NBA Champs’ Big Three, which included the bold revelation that he’d slept with Chris Bosh’s wife, has everyone from the sports world to the hip-hop blogosphere chiming in. Fans and detractors of the Young Money CEO took to Twitter to voice their opinions on the situation and they are nothing if not completely varied in scope and passion.

A small sample size of the Twitterverse reveals that most “fans” chose to pan or make light of the YMCMB head honcho’s remarks:

“You let them ni–as know I’m from the streets so this ain’t no Twitter beefin or no online beef, just take it to the motherf–king streets, ni–a. F–k all them ni–as. F–k LeBron, f–k She-Wade, f–k Chris Bosh, f–k all them ni–as, man. And, and, and, I f–ked Chris Bosh wife,” Wayne said.

Marley (@MarleysAngels) reasoned that Wayne was just salty that LeBron and Dwyane passed on building a friendship, tweeting, “Lil Wayne still mad at Lebron n Wade for not recognizing him n saying hi at the game lol. Biatch.” Another fan, Edgar (@New_Tape_City), took the “LOL” approach, “If Lil’ Wayne really slept with Chris Bosh‘s wife like he said, you know Bosh will counter by sleeping with Birdman.” Peter Rosenberg (@Rosenbergradio), who has had a run in or two with Wayne due to his negative comments about Nicki Minaj’s “Starships” record during Hot 97’s Summer Jam, chose to roll with Miami, “Only Lil Wayne could make me root for the Miami heat.” The Breakfast Club’s Charlamagne Tha God (@cthagod) made the well-known Laker fan the “Donkey of the Day,” writing, “Announcing publicly that you f-cked another man’s woman is so damn lame.”

As much as the I Am Not A Human Being II MC’s comments about the Heat’s stars ruffled feathers, it was his assertion that he was the next Tupac that really drew ire. Stephen A. Smith (@stephenasmth) of ESPN’s “First Take,” tweeted, “Lil Wayne saying he’s the next Tupac is like Manti Te‘o saying he has a hot girlfriend.” Hip Hop Wired’s Alvin aqua Blanco (@Aqua174) wrote that Wayne’s antics may cause fans to utilize the NBA’s amnesty rule, “Black people may have to amnesty Lil Wayne.” Another fan, Melanie (@Its_Me_Mell), graphically described her thoughts on Weezy’s claim to ‘Pac fame, “Lil Wayne is so damn childish and petty. And the fact that he would compare himself at all to Pac makes me want to gag!”

It takes some persistent searching to find fans that cosign Wayne’s rants, like Birdman did, albeit without the implied menace, but they do exist. JassyMotherfuckingB (@JaspalBadesha_) defends his favorite rapper, writing, “i dont care what anyone says Lil Wayne is one of the best rappers hands down, you cant deny that,” while it was business as usual for ana vogrincic (@OhheyitsAna_), who continues to listen to the multi-platinum spitter’s discography in class, “Jammin out to Lil Wayne in chemistry, I dig ????????.”

The NBA has already denied that it banned Wayne from attending games, but LeBron, Dwyane and Chris have yet to respond directly. LeBron did post a tweet today that read simply, “The Cooler..” with an Instagram photo that reads: “Just know that when you’re hot something cold will try to ignite themselves off of you to try to stay relevant. Don’t even engage! #dontlookbackwards #pushforward.”

Do you think Lil Wayne went too far with his comments?

Jeremy Lin Schools His NBA Haters In ‘Linsanity’ Doc

What are the chances that Jeremy Lin and the Houston Rockets — in the midst of an 82-game regular season — would be playing the Utah Jazz hours after the close of the Sundance Film Festival on Sunday, allowing the point guard to pop over to Park City, Utah, for the final screening of his documentary “Linsanity”?

Then again, what are the chances the world would even know the name Jeremy Lin? That the undrafted Harvard grad would become an international sensation who gave New York Knicks fans a reason to root for the team during an otherwise abysmal season? That the Knicks would then fail to re-sign him and that Lin — courtesy of a three-year, $25 million contract — would head to Houston? That an MTV News producer named Evan Jackson Leong had been following around Lin for years for what everyone involved thought would be a small documentary about an Asian-American basketball player who no one had ever heard of? That “Linsanity” would end up getting into Sundance and receive rave reviews?

Some things are just too hard to explain. To hear it from Lin’s perspective in the doc, it’s all part of God’s plan. For Leong, who stopped by to chat with his old colleagues at Sundance, all these questions amount to the craziest year of his life.

MTV News: It’s been one year since you left MTV News. At what point did you realize you were sitting on something that was much bigger than you ever expected? Was it that first game where he went big? Was it a couple of games in?

Leong: I think we have to go back and know that we were shooting this when he was at Harvard. I was at MTV; I was using my vacation days to film him. At that point in the documentary, we didn’t really have a great ending. We had a bittersweet story. He made it to the NBA, which is amazing in itself, but it wasn’t a very good start to his career. That first game, he gave us an ending. And that second game, he gave us an ending, and he just kept going. We were just blown away. We didn’t even know what happened. We’re like, “Oh yeah, we’re shooting a documentary!” And we have all the access before anyone else does.

MTV: People know the NBA story of Jeremy Lin, but what’s really cool about the film is you find out these little moments about Jeremy. In the best way possible, he’s kind of a dork who likes “Aladdin” and “The Lion King” animated films, he likes to sing karaoke.

Leong: There’s the Jeremy that everyone sees, the one that’s media-trained and ESPN-ready. But then there’s the Jeremy behind closed doors. It’s not a bad Jeremy, it’s not something you have to hide from, but it’s also one that he’s very protective of. I think in any documentary, something like this, you spend two or three years with someone, you want to earn their trust. And when you earn their trust they’re going to give you things that you might not normally get. I think that’s what we built.

MTV: When is the first time you heard that word “Linsanity”?

Leong: Maybe the second game I heard it, and I texted that to Jeremy and he didn’t text me back. And then I realized I don’t think he liked it that much. He didn’t like the name. He likes Jeremy; he doesn’t like using everything as Lin puns.

MTV: Race and racism play a strong role in the documentary.

Leong: I think we all know racism still exists here in America, and that was something you couldn’t get away with in this documentary. He’s an Asian guy, and there’s not a lot of Asian-Americans that high in the media. So when they do reach that level, they are going to be exposed, and there’s going to be stuff that comes out. What I really wanted to try and do and show on this documentary was the evolution of how he dealt with that, because it was new to us, but he’s been dealing with that his whole life. And I think we can learn from how he deals with it now. In the documentary, you see he has a little bit of a chip on his shoulder when he’s younger, a little bit of something to prove. He realizes that playing for that — those reasons — those aren’t the right reasons to play. By the end, I think we can all learn from how he deals with race. If everyone looked at racism in that sense, by letting it go and focusing that energy, I think what he did outshines any of that stuff by a tremendous amount.

MTV: So was he able to have a sort of enlightened approach to it all?

Leong: He’s really at an enlightened stage these days. When people say racist stuff, he laughs. It doesn’t bother him to the degree of anything anymore. I’d probably get pretty mad, but it doesn’t bother him anymore. There’s far bigger things that he has to worry about in his life, and again, he’s become that high. You’re always going to have haters, and they’re always going to be the ones that say stuff.

MTV: You ended the film at a point before the injury that ended his season, before the contract negotiations and all that stuff. Why did you decide to end it there?

Leong: It’s a good question, because no one’s asked me that one, which is great. We ended it with Linsanity because I wanted to make this a legacy film. Ten years from now, 20 years from now, I want to be able to show my kids, and I hope that he can show his kids, that this is what happened. There’s always going to be news about him and those little media controversies. No one’s gonna remember that kind of stuff 10 years from now; they’re just going to remember those nine games. It’s contract stuff, and that’s business, but ultimately at the end of the day, I’m not in those rooms, so I don’t know what’s going on with all that. And also at the same time, by ending with that — you take that journey and end it with that — you can’t have a better ending than that.

Manti Te’o Hoax: Inside The Mind Of A Catfish

It’s the story that has us all talking and the most high-profile Catfishing yet. The once-tragic tale of Manti Te’o's late girlfriend has been replaced with a twisting-and-turning mystery that has us wondering who is telling the truth.

It all started with the heartwarming and seemingly inspirational story of Notre Dame linebacker Te’o, a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, who played his heart out for his team in the midst of a personal crisis, dealing with the sudden deaths of his grandmother and girlfriend. Much media attention was paid to the loss of his loved ones, particularly his ailing girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, whom Te’o said made him promise to play with his team no matter what might happen to her.

All those heartfelt and sympathetic sentiments for the potential NFL draft pick went out the window when it was discovered that Kekua never existed. The hoax is a highly elaborate Catfishing — which is saying a lot, given the complex and incredible stories explored on MTV‘s “Catfish: The TV show” since its November premiere.

T’eo himself denied being complicit in the hoax in an audio interview with ESPN late on Friday. “When (people) hear the facts, they’ll know,” he said. “They’ll know that there is no way that I could be part of this.” He did, however, admit that he had “tailored” his story so that people would believe he had actually met Kekua.

MTV News recently caught up with former Catfish Chelsea Browning, whose story was featured on the very first episode, to better understand how the Te’o hoax might have come to pass. Browning has a unique perspective to offer on the subject, because she once posed as a male model and engaged in an online romance with an unsuspecting and trusting young woman named Sunny; in Te’o's case, the alleged Catfish was a man purporting to be a 22-year-old woman.

“I think it’s one of the craziest Catfish stories I’ve heard in my entire life by far,” Browning said. “I really don’t know how I feel about it.”

Because of Browning’s experience maintaining a false online identity, she, more than anyone, might know what motivates someone to take on a false persona to begin with and how difficult that identity is to maintain.

“I created my fake profile because I was bullied and I wanted revenge,” she admitted. “Everyone does certain things for their own personal reasons, including myself.”

What’s new with Chelsea? Check out her Skype reunion with Nev over on the Remote Control blog!

No matter the motivation, maintaining a false identity requires a lot of work and careful attention to detail. In other words, there is a lot of pre-meditation involved.

“First of all, you really have to know what you’re doing; you have to remember everyone you talk to, what you say to that person, the way you act toward that person,” she explained. “Definitely I would, for sure, say that it’s very hard to maintain. You have to really remember everything that happens in your story.”

Luckily for Browning, her experience on “Catfish” was a positive one — she’s even become an anti-bullying advocate since her time on the show — and she encourages any current or recovering Catfish out there to find the courage to come clean about their true identities.

“My situation came out to be very positive. I came clean with Sunny, and that completely changed my life,” she said. “For the people who don’t know who they’re talking to online, I feel like it will make them aware of what’s going on in the world and that this happens all the time. For the people who know that they are Catfishing someone else, honestly, in my opinion, I don’t think they will stop. This is … a kind of validation.”

Browning said whenever she receives email from people who are actively deceiving others, she urges them to tell the truth, no matter what.

“They might take it hard, but it’s different for everyone. We all react differently,” she said. “But I absolutely tell them it’s better to come clean.”

“Catfish” airs every Monday at 11 p.m. ET on MTV. For more, check out MTV‘s Remote Control blog.

[News] Big Boi Discusses Atlanta Falcons, Commends Trinidad James

Big Boi talks about the Atlanta Falcons‘ play-off run and commends Trinidad James‘ success.

It’s been a long NFL season, and while many fans have little to celebrate at this point in the year, the same can’t be said of the Atlanta Falcons‘ base. Now, in a recent interview with ESPN, Falcons fans and Outkast emcee Big Boi speaks on his favorite team’s winning season.

Big Boi discussed his home team’s play-off run and recent 30-28 victory over the Seattle Seahawks to clinch a spot in the NFC Championship. Like its football team, Big Boi said that Atlanta Hip Hop scene has been at the forefront of music as of late, even commending newcomer Trinidad James as one of its latest successes.

“There is no such thing as lose to me,” he said of the Falcons’ recent success. “I wasn’t going to be sad if they lost, though. Well, unless I bet a lot of money.”

Of the the A’s music scene, he added, “Atlanta has had the ball for a minute. It’s not going to move anytime soon. It’s still hot. You have artists here who reinvent themselves and a host of new ones such as Trinidad James coming up. It’s all about power in numbers. We jam together. We’re comrades. That’s how we keep our city on our back and push forward.”

50 Cent Goes After Chief Keef For Ditching Video Shoot

After publicly feuding with longtime friend and business partner Floyd Mayweather via the Twitterverse and separating from the boxer’s TMT Promotions, 50 Cent got the last laugh in Nevada on Thursday after his application to promote boxing was approved.

But all things in the Silver State didn’t go 50′s way, though, as rap newcomer Chief Keef reportedly spurned a scheduled video shoot for the song “Hate Being Sober,” from his upcoming debut, Finally Rich, featuring 50 and Wiz Khalifa.

Fif took to Twitter to scold the Interscope rookie on his lack of professionalism: “@chiefkeef didn’t show up to his own video. I never saw anything like this on the first song,” 50 tweeted (since deleted), adding, “Its not funny @ChiefKeef didn’t sell any records yet, they will pull the plug on him.SMSAUDIO.”

The Chicagoan’s stiff arm must have been disappointing to 50, who co-signed the young spitter’s talent over French Montana’s after he had an online war of words with the “Pop That” MC: “Hip Hop best new artist @chiefkeef hands down. SMSaudio.” 50 even elaborated about Sosa’s music after working with him in the studio, tweeting at one point, “I did a new joint to night with @chiefkeef he got some heat.”

Not one to dwell on the negative, 50 joined Wiz Khalifa onstage Thursday night for his 2050 Tour stop in Vegas. MTV News watched as the rapper born Curtis Jackson surprised the Sin City crowd by rapping along to his 2007 hit “I Get Money.”

The concert may have also served as a celebration for 50′s new promoting position with his new company, SMS Promotions, which was approved by the Nevada State Athletic Commission with a 5-0 vote at its monthly meeting. The Queens representer initially applied for a license under the TMT umbrella, but after Mayweather did not provide his share of the money he promised to the company, the “New Day” MC reapplied for the license under his own imprint.

The G-Unit general still has to provide the commission with three additional pieces of information to complete his application, but he, along with attorney Leon Margules, promised to provide the outstanding documentation, which includes two years’ worth of income tax returns, a financial statement listing the fighters under contract with SMS and a letter stating that assets formerly under TMT‘s name were moved to SMS, within the week, according to ESPN.

During his hearing with the commission, 50 revealed that he had invested $1.5 million in acquiring fighters after he and Mayweather agreed to promote boxing together and wanted to “move forward” on his own, despite his dissolved business relationship with the boxer.

Tell us what you think of the 50′s beef with Chief Keef in the comments!

Gerard Butler Scores Goals, Warms Hearts In ‘Playing For Keeps’ Trailer

fc466 Playing For Keeps Gerard Butler Gerard Butler Scores Goals, Warms Hearts In Playing For Keeps Trailer

By Ryan Gowland

This year will see Gerard Butler go from playing a surfer in “Chasing Mavericks” to a retired soccer player in “Playing For Keeps” (formerly “Playing the Field”), continuing his penchant for playing flawed heroes.

In the dramedy directed by Gabriele Muccino (“Seven Pounds,” “The Pursuit of Happyness”), Butler plays George Dryer, once a soccer pro who played for a team wearing Celtic-esque uniforms (not coincidentally, Glasgow’s Celtic F.C. is Butler’s favorite team) and ruined his marriage to Stacie (Jessica Biel) with his playboy antics.

Check out the trailer after the jump!

Bankrupt and wondering what to do next with his life and career, George begins his tour of redemption by moving to Virginia to coach his son’s soccer team, while trying to mend his fences with his Stacie, who is already on her way to marrying again. Enter Catherine Zeta-Jones as Denise, a former sportscaster who puts George in position to be a commentator with ESPN, which would impact his new found relationship with his son and the ever-burning flame of his former marriage to Stacie. Who said it was easy being famous and handsome?

FilmDistrict picked up the distribution rights to “Playing For Keeps” during the Cannes Film Festival, and has finally released the first trailer. Like a lot of romantic dramedies about soccer pros, the trailer shows pretty much the entire movie, but with a supporting cast that includes Dennis Quaid, Uma Thurman and Judy Greer, we’re pretty sure that won’t stop anyone from seeing it when it opens this winter.

“Playing For Keeps” opens December 7th.

What did you think of the trailer? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!

Khloe Kardashian’s Rep Denies ‘Khloe & Lamar’ Cancellation

Representatives for Khloé Kardashian are denying a TMZ report that the reality TV star and her basketball player husband, Lamar Odom, are pulling the plug on their “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” spin-off “Khloé Lamar” so Odom can focus solely on his sports career.

“The show has not been canceled,” Khloé’s rep told MTV News via e-mail, adding that further production will “depend on their schedules as Lamar’s basketball is [the] priority right now.”

The former Los Angeles Lakers forward was traded to the Dallas Mavericks late last year. After a difficult season, he was placed on the team’s inactive list earlier this month. Odom reportedly clashed with Mavericks owner Mark Cuban and issued a statement to ESPN, saying, “I’m sorry that things didn’t work out better for both of us, but I wish the Mavs’ organization, my teammates and Dallas fans nothing but continued success in the defense of their championship.”

There’s still a chance the Mavericks will trade Odom to another team, though the team and Cuban have not publicly announced their decision at this time.

The pair will reportedly return full-time to Los Angeles, where Odom is said to have hired personal trainers to help get him back into peak playing form. They will also continue to appear on “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” as Khloé was included in the $40 million deal E! reached with the family to keep “Keeping Up” on the air for three more years.

Nas And Gary Clark Jr. Collaborate For ESPN

a2a30 nas birthday Nas And Gary Clark Jr. Collaborate For ESPN

By Andres Marin

Hip-Hop legend Nas and newer sensation guitarist/singer Gary Clark Jr. have collaborated once again to broadcast their music through ESPN’s NFL 2012 Draft. Three tracks have been recreated to be played in and out of commercial breaks as well as in highlight packages; and videos of both artists will be played during the event as well.

“Train” and “The Don” were taken from Nas’ upcoming album under Def Jam Records, scheduled for later this year. “The Don” was released a few weeks ago as a first peak at the album, and is getting lots to talk about already. On the other side, “Bright Lights” from the homonymous EP that has exploded Clark’s career will include some lyrics by Nas for the football three-day presentation. Gary is also preparing a new album for later this year; the 28 year-old seems to be the new Lenny Kravitz, in the sense that he blends many styles while creating a new sound. His bluesy inclined music is often compared to Jimi Hendrix’s.

Both artists worked before with ESPN, and this songs were a perfect fit according to the channel’s music director Kevin Wilson. “Bright Lights” talks about New York, where Nas is from and where the football event will be on primetime starting Thursday, April 26 at 8pm (ET).
