Exclusive ‘Great Gatsby’ Featurette Goes Behind The Jazz-Inspired And Star-Studded Soundtrack

The films of Australian director Baz Luhrmann are almost as well known for their unique use of music as they are for their frenetic visual style, and his latest film is no exception. To capture the excitement of Fitzgerald’s Jazz Era in “The Great Gatsby,” Luhrmann used a combination of musical stylings that include the age-defining genre, hip hop, and contemporary pop, all sung by some of today’s biggest recording artists.

The way that Luhrmann went to all of these artists and musicians and involved them in the filmmaking process became like one big collaborative effort. An exclusive featurette about the production of the soundtrack explores how some of these songs came to be and what working on the album meant for the musicians.

The clip includes interview with artists like Jay-Z, Florence Welch, and the XX, all of whom explain what it was like working with Luhrmann, many saying that it was unlike anything they had done before.

Check out the featurette above. “The Great Gatsby” opens in theaters on Friday, May 10.

Lana Del Rey’s ‘Young And Beautiful’ From ‘Great Gatsby’ Soundtrack Online

Lana Del Reys Young And Beautiful From Great Gatsby Soundtrack Online

Apart from the stunning visuals presented in the previews for Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” adaptation, viewers have fawned over the film’s stacked soundtrack, which includes original tracks from the likes of Beyonce, Jay-Z, and Florence Welch.

The song from controversial vocalist Lana Del Rey, “Young and Beautiful,” however, was featured prominently in the third trailer and instantly struck a chord with people looking forward to the film.

A series of snippets, previews, and teasers of the movie’s entire soundtrack have given us a little more for each of the songs, including “Young and Beautiful,” but now the full song is available to stream online (via Vulture).

Listen to the song after the jump!

“Young and Beautiful” falls very much in-line with what Lana Del Rey‘s fans have come to expect from the 26-year-old singer. Soft and dreary vocals play over an epic backing, making it easy to see how this song would fit within the world of the decadent 1920s.

Longer previews for two of the soundtrack’s other most anticipated songs, Beyonce and Andre 3000′s take on Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” and Jay-Z’s “100$ Bill,” also appeared online over the weekend, and you can listen to those with the links from above.

Luhrmann is responsible for one of the most popular movie soundtracks in recent memory with “Moulin Rouge,” so expectations are understandably high for his next big musical effort. The entire soundtrack for “The Great Gatsby” hits store shelves on May 7.

“The Great Gatsby” opens in theaters on May 10.

Calvin Harris/ Florence Welch Collabo Was All About The ‘Chase’

When Calvin Harris sat down to cook up jams for his new album, 18 Months, he knew there was one red-haired female vocal powerhouse he wanted on board: Florence Welch. And, he said the thrill of the chase only made her vocal contribution that much more special.

“It’s more satisfying when you’re pursuing something. It’s like chasing a girl or something. It’s way more satisfying if you put in a year’s worth of effort of chasing and then you get the result, you get the vocal,” he told MTV News. “So the Florence track ['Sweet Nothing'] was #1. She was most chased of the whole album. And then also Dizzee Rascal, I chased for ages, even though he owes me like three vocals over the years. … So I was really happy with that and then when he came on it, it was like clean sweep of all the people I really wanted to work with on one record, which I wasn’t expecting.”

Calvin Harris credits Rihanna’s “We Found Love” for his A-list status!

Harris’ history with his collaborators started far before the year and a half he dedicated to making the album. He recalled to MTV News when he first met Welch nearly half a decade ago.

Calvin Harris on his short-lived feud with Lady Gaga!

“I met Florence for the first time end of 2007 and the first time I ever saw her in my life, it was like weird corporate [party] and I walked into the green room and she was definitely drunk, getting a piggy back off someone in her band, like with a bottle of champagne, screaming. And I thought ‘I like this girl.’… And in the years [since] she just actually grew up. I wasn’t expecting that,” he said. “I thought she was a cool kid, one of those people who come and go and then she just smashed it.” He added, “Now Florence is Florence. She’s cool as f— as well.”

Avicii Makes History — Loudly — With Radio City Show

It’s an odd thing, seeing an artist like Avicii at a place like Radio City Music Hall, best known for its high-kicking Rockettes, opulent Art Deco façade, grand staircases and incredibly overpriced mixed cocktails … which is probably why, up until Wednesday night (September 26), it had never happened before.

Yes, the Swedish sensation made a bit of history with his show, becoming the first DJ to headline the iconic New York City venue. And while he’s made a fortune playing massive spaces all around the globe, you could tell that even he was moved by the moment … at least judging by a promo video for the show, which showed him wandering around the cavernous space, sitting in empty seats and just marveling at the sheer magnitude of it all.

Of course, that reverence all but disappeared the moment his giant space head/DJ booth/thingy appeared on the stage, as Avicii attacked the normally staid venue with a high-energy set, one that blasted off to the strains of the Who’s “Baba O’Riley,” segued into his smash “Fade Into Darkness,” and never really let up from there. Much to the delight of his tank-top clad fans (there truly were no biceps left uncovered on this night), there was no shortage of chest-caving bass or starry, wide-screen electro squeals, and his light show — which could charitably be described as “completely unreal” — had eyes popping, a constant wash of rapidly changing landscapes and brightly flashing beams.

There were, of course, a few subtle moments, like when he worked Robyn’s “Hang With Me” into the mix, or the sprinkling of Florence Welch‘s vocals into his David Guetta-assisted “Sunshine,” but overall, this was Avicii to the max … like the whomp and pump of “Superlove,” his sky-scraping take on “Seek Bromance,” (which, yes, had many bros romancing … or at least grabbing their girlfriends’ butts) and, of course, his hit “Le7els,” so big and muscly that it threatened to burst out of Radio City itself.

Hey, if you’re going to make history, you might as well do it loudly. Radio City might not have been the most logical place to catch an Avicii show — dancing between the seats is sort of dangerous, after all — but you got the feeling neither he, nor his fans, seemed to mind. Is EDM a flash in the pan, or has it finally managed to establish itself as a genuine global phenomenon? You can debate that question all you want, but shows like this go a long way toward suggesting that the latter may be the case. Perched atop his giant head, Avicii peered down on all who came to see him and presumably basked in the moment … and, if you could see his face through all the lights and sonic din, one could logically assume he had a smile on his face. He’s earned the right to do so.

‘Catching Fire’ Soundtrack: A Wish List

I’ll admit, speculating over the soundtrack for a movie that began production less than two weeks ago seems premature. But here we are, with buzz already beginning for the sonic accompaniment to “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” due in large part to an intriguing tweet from We The Kings frontman Travis Clark (thanks to our friends at Hunger Games Examiner for the heads up).

“Just wrote a song for the Hunger Games soundtrack icon smile Catching Fire Soundtrack: A Wish List it sounds effin amazingggg,” he wrote on Wednesday. (I’m assuming he means the “Catching Fire” soundtrack considering “The Hunger Games” soundtrack dropped earlier this year with the movie.) And while there’s no confirmation from Lionsgate whether the song was commissioned, or is being written on spec, or is really a thing at all, it did get us thinking about the artists we’d like to see in the album’s liner notes. And really, if we fans send our suggestions out into the ether now, maybe they can actually be considered! So here are five of my picks for artists I’d like to see on the “Catching Fire” soundtrack:

Florence + The Machine
I’ve been pining for 26-year-old Florence Welch to visit Panem since before the first installment hit theaters in March. The English songstress has such a powerful pair of pipes, and her ethereal ballads lend an air of epic-ness to everything they touch (see: “Snow White and the Huntsman” and the recently released “Beautiful Creatures” trailer). I think we can all agree storytelling doesn’t get much more epic than 24 children battling in a televised death match.

Mumford Sons
No, this won’t be an entire list of English bands with punctuation marks in the middle of their names. Anyway! The franchise’s first soundtrack leaned heavily on country influences, what with the inclusion of Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert and the Secret Sisters. If the film’s music supervisor decides to stick with a similar theme, the rock group’s folk sensibility would be at safe and sound here.

Blake Shelton
Again with the country. Blake Shelton‘s wife Miranda Lambert and his “The Voice” co-judge Adam Levine (of Maroon 5) both appeared on “The Hunger Games” soundtrack, so he’ll have two artists to ask for tips and advice. Not that he needs to. But still.

Alicia Keys
Guys, her new single is titled “Girl on Fire.” It doesn’t get more fitting than that. Though Keys was not inspired by Suzanne Collins‘ dystopian tale (she said as much during an interview with Entertainment Weekly), there’s no denying her collaboration with Nicki Minaj is sufficiently inspiring enough to keep our heroine Katniss Everdeen alive in the arena.

Taylor Swift…Again
Because she can do no wrong.

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” hits theaters November 22, 2013.

Ryan Reynolds And Blake Lively Are Married

Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are officially man and wife. Sources close to the couple have confirmed that the “Green Lantern” co-stars tied the knot over the weekend in South Carolina.

The couple married at the Boone Hall Plantation in Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, just outside of Charleston, an insider told People.com. The guest list reportedly included family, friends, famed shoe designer Christian Louboutin and Florence Welch, who performed three songs.

A local radio station, 95.1 FM, may have been the first to blow the lid off the secret ceremony when they tweeted, “Hold up, there’s another story that it’s Ryan Reynolds and he married Blake Lively at the Cotton Docks today!”

The radio station’s Kelly Gukanovich opened up to E! News about the local gossip surrounding the nuptials.

“A few days ago, I heard Ryan was back in town. Then today, lots of signs went up at Boone Hall Plantation stating that it was holding a private event, so no one could get into the area. I also started hearing rumors that a celebrity wedding was taking place,” she said.

“I am being told there were around 60 people at the event and that a local restaurant may have catered it. Ryan has always loved it here and when he got together with Blake, he started to bring her here, too.”

This is the first marriage for Lively, though she had been in public relationships with “Gossip Girl” co-star Penn Badgley and Leonardo DiCaprio. Reynolds had previously been married to Scarlett Johansson and was engaged to Alanis Morissette.

Neither actors’ rep has commented on the rumors and no word on which couture house she ended up visiting before walking down the aisle.
