Mumford & Sons Only ‘Think’ They Understand ‘Lover Of The Light’ Video

Mumford Sons‘ new “Lover of the Light” video is unlike any the band has ever made … and not just because they don’t even show up in it for a single frame.

Directed by — and starring — actor Idris Elba, the “Light” video tells the story of a blind man who literally leaves his disability at the door, ditching his cane and wandering out into the wide world. And though he’s sightless, he bravely dashes through a forest, sprints toward the edge of a cliff and lives his life unencumbered, for the first time. It is an incredibly powerful, moving thing, a clip meant to both inspire and empower … which is exactly what they were going for when they sat down with Elba to discuss the treatment. And even if the finished product has left some of their fans slightly bewildered, well, that’s perfectly fine with everyone involved.

“We met him in a pub in London, and we had a chat, and talked about doing something that was, as a music video, very different from anything we’ve done before,” Marcus Mumford told MTV News. “Firstly, we wouldn’t be in it, which is a real relief to us, and secondly, it would be kind of observational, rather than narrative. Some people don’t really understand it, which is great, because all that we do is very understandable … so it’s nice to have something that’s a little more challenging to understand.”

In fact, even Mumford will admit that the band aren’t entirely clear about the video’s true meaning, though really, they couldn’t be happier with the second clip off their Babel album … and not just because they got to work with one of their idols.

“I think we understand it, I think we do,” Mumford laughed. “But [Elba] was great, we sat and talked and shared some ideas and visions, and he’s one of our favorite actors as well.”

Who’s The Next James Bond? Naomie Harris Has A Suggestion

Naomie Harris, one of the two Bond girls vying for the superspy’s affection in “Skyfall,” set off a flurry of news stories earlier this week when a quote from her interview with the Huffington Post appeared online. The comment that grabbed headlines had to do with her “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom” co-star and vocal 007 aspirant, Idris Elba.

This isn’t the first time that we’ve heard talk of Bond being played by a black actor. In 2008, current Bond, Daniel Craig put the idea forward. “I think the role could easily be played by a black actor because the character created by Ian Fleming in the ’50s has undergone a great deal of evolution and continues to be updated,” he said.

Though Elba had previously spoken about wanting to be the first black Bond, we didn’t know that the talk amounted to anything more than just that — until Harris revealed that he met with 007 producer Barbara Broccoli.

“I didn’t realize that there was this talk and then I did a film with Idris and he said that he met Barbara Broccoli and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond,” Harris said. “And I would have to vote for Idris because I just finished working with him and he’s a great guy.”

Elba as Bond is certainly a popular idea among many fans on the Internet, but whether it’s a realistic one is another story. With “Skyfall” now poised to take over the world in the next few weeks, Daniel Craig is sitting quite comfortable as the man with a license to kill. He has at least two more films in him, which would keep him in the role until 2016 at the earliest. That would make Elba 46 by the time his first Bond movie rolled around in 2018, in theory.

However, that didn’t keep Harris from singing Elba’s praises during our interview with her. She considers herself a big supporter of the idea, since Elba has all the quality he needs to step into the iconic tux.

“He would an amazing Bond. He’d be fantastic. I’d vote for him,” Harris said. “Because he has an elegance about him, and there’s a mysterious quality. And he’s super, super hot as well.”

‘Pacific Rim’ Images Promise Monster Devastation

Pacific Rim Images Promise Monster Devastation

We might have to wait until the holiday season to see the first trailer for “Pacific Rim,” but that doesn’t mean we won’t see any teases for Guillermo del Toro‘s new project before then.

ComicBookMovie.com got their hands on the upcoming edition of Empire magazine which features new photos from the set of “Pacific Rim.” In the scans of the images, we see del Toro directing stars Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba as they hang out in their Jaegers (a type of giant human-piloted robot) as well as Hunnam and Elba’s characters shaking hands. We also finally get a chance to see the world of “Pacific Rim,” even though it looks like it’s been partially destroyed by some big bad monsters.

As we learned in the film’s plot synopsis, “Pacific Rim” tells the story of a washed up former pilot (Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) who end up being humanity’s only hope for survival when a race of monstrous creatures known as the Kaiju come and attack Earth. The Jaegers are the only things that can stand against the Kaiju, and the one gunned by Hunnam and Kikuchi ends up being Earth’s last chance against the mounting apocalypse.

When we caught up with del Toro at Comic-Con, he was legitimately geeking out about how excited he was for the project.

“With Warner, I had the relationship with having prepped ‘The Hobbit.’ With Thomas [Tull] and Jon [Jashni at Legendary], I found an absolute dream. It was like clash of the geeks. It was fantastic,” he said. “Discussing with them kaiju and robot battle sequences in an office full of toys and collectibles and posters and original art is like a game changer for me.

He continued, “It is the best experience I have ever had professionally, and I really loved creatively and in every way every second of it, so it was truly, truly a respite for the fan-man.”

Pacific Rim” also stars Charlie Day, Max Martini, Rob Kazinsky, Clifton Collins Jr. and Diego Klattenhoff and hits theaters on July 12, 2013.

‘Pacific Rim’ Image Introduces Charlie Hunnam And Rinko Kikuchi

Pacific Rim Image Introduces Charlie Hunnam And Rinko Kikuchi

Thank you Entertainment Weekly for getting us even more hyped for Comic-Con than we already were. In addition to the awesome “The Hobbit” images we saw earlier, this week’s issue of the magazine also includes a new look at Guillermo del Toro‘s upcoming film “Pacific Rim.”

The first image from the movie introduced us to Idris Elba‘s character, and now we get to meet those played by Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi. Shock Till You Drop uploaded a scan of the image, which shows the two actors getting ready to start up their obsolete robot, Jaeger.

As we already know from the film’s recently-released plot synopsis, Hunnam and Kikuchi are the stars of this film. They play a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee, respectively, who end being humanity’s last hope for survival against a race of monstrous creatures known as the Kaiju. The aforementioned Jaegers are giant robots created to fight against the Kaiju, but it’s only the one gunned by Hunnam and Kikuchi that actually stands a chance against “the mounting apocalypse.”

We’re hoping that del Toro brings a trailer for “Pacific Rim” to Comic-Con so we can get a better sense of how the Jaeger and Kaiju look in action, but we love what a departure these robots are from what we’re used to seeing from del Toro. Our guess is the Kaiji will look more in line with the creatures in “Hellboy,” “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Cronos.”

Pacific Rim” also stars Charlie Day, Max Martini, Rob Kazinsky, Clifton Collins Jr. and Diego Klattenhoff and hits theaters on July 12, 2013.

‘Prometheus’: The (Early) Reviews Are In!

One of the summer’s most anticipated films, director Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus,” doesn’t open until June 8, but early reviews for the sci-fi blockbuster are already trickling in, something many studios would fear so far ahead of a film’s release — that is, if they weren’t as universally positive.

So far, the consensus is clear: “Prometheus” is a flawed film with a lot of great things going for it, most notably a breakout scene-stealing performance from Michael Fassbender (“Shame”), inspired and amazing 3-D effects and plenty of “jolt and amaze” moments that all but assure filmgoers “will be right back for seconds” when 20th Century Fox releases the film next Friday.

Critics have nothing but praise for the performances of Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace and Idris Elba, though they are particularly emphatic in their appreciation for Fassbender as the android butler David. When MTV News caught up with Theron recently, she gushed about what makes Fassbender worthy of all that praise. And for fans who can’t wait to see the cast in action, Theron will appear at the MTV Movie Awards, airing this Sunday, June 3 at 9 p.m. E.T. on MTV.

“Technically, ‘Prometheus’ is magnificent. Shot in 3-D but without the director taking the process into account in his conceptions or execution, the film absorbs and uses the process seamlessly,” The Hollywood Reporter writes. “There is nary a false or phony note in the effects.”

“Scott and his production crew compensate to some degree with an intricate, immersive visual design that doesn’t skimp on futuristic eye-candy or prosthetic splatter,” Variety agrees.

Those going in expecting a straightforward prequel to Scott’s “Alien” may be disappointed. While it does answer a few questions burning in the minds of sci-fi aficionados, including some insight into the acid-for-blood aliens of the original series and the spacecraft they are discovered aboard, “Prometheus” is very much its own film.

“Much of Scott’s audience are expecting a fully-formed prequel to ‘Alien,’” The Telegraph writes, “but ‘Prometheus’ only really lays the groundwork, leaving plenty of dots disconnected.”

Though movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes is only culling from nine reviews so far, many of them are from top critics, and the film enjoys an 88 percent “fresh” rating. That puts “Prometheus,” presently, a few points ahead of “The Hunger Games” and a few points behind “The Avengers” in the race for best-reviewed blockbuster of the year so far. And several critics attribute that standing to Fassbender.

“Upstaging everyone is Fassbender, who provides the film’s real glint of steel, while decentring its dramatic focus,” the Guardian continues. “[Fassbender] steals the film with the chilling, parasitic relentlessness of that first gut-bound alien.”

“The film contains the ideal embodiment of its sly existential paradox in David, the man-made manservant whose soulfully soulless presence brings to mind both ‘A.I.’ and ’2001′; he’s like HAL 9000 with better cheekbones,” Variety concludes. “In a particularly witty touch, Fassbender’s droll performance takes its cues from Peter O’Toole in ‘Lawrence of Arabia,’ a clip of which David continually watches as a model for how to behave around humans.”

The ultimate result, according to THR, is a “visual feast of a 3D sci-fi movie that has trouble combining its high-minded notions about the origins of the species and its ‘Alien’-based obligation to deliver oozy gross-out moments.”

It’s a sentiment echoed by The Guardian: “It is a muddled, intricate, spectacular film, but more or less in control of all its craziness and is very watchable. It lacks the central killer punch of ‘Alien’: it doesn’t have its satirical brilliance and its tough, rationalist attack on human agency and guilt. But there’s a driving narrative impulse, and, however silly, a kind of idealism, a sense that it’s exciting to make contact with whatever’s out there.”

‘Prometheus’ Featurette: Meet The Ship Behind The Myth

653c3 prometheus Prometheus Featurette: Meet The Ship Behind The Myth

With the release of “Prometheus” only a week and a half away, Fox has unveiled a new featurette for the movie that focuses on the ship itself. And while the style and shape of the vehicle are all very interesting, we find writer Damon Lindelof‘s reasoning for why the movie is named after the ship to be very telling.

“‘Prometheus’ [the myth] talked about all the things that we wanted the movie to be about. Creation, defiance of the gods, the hubris of it all,” he said.

For those of you who aren’t as up on your Greek mythology, Prometheus was a titan who acted as a champion for mankind. He stole the gift of fire from the gods and gave it to humans, which caused mortals to have a major advancement in their knowledge and technology. But Prometheus was punished for his defiance by being bound to a rock and having an eagle come and eat his liver, only to have it grow back and the cycle be repeated every day. Needless to say, that myth — and this movie — is not for the faint of heart.

Also intriguing in this featurette is an image we see towards the beginning of the video. We see a strange shot of a deformed man staring at his hand, but it’s unclear who or what he is. Is this one of the creatures that allegedly caused the beginning of mankind? Or is this some sort of transformation that one of the crew of the Prometheus undergoes? These are big questions with answers that we likely won’t get until the movie comes out next Friday.

“Prometheus” is due out in theaters on June 8. It stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Charlize Theron.

‘Pacific Rim’ Plot Synopsis Reveals Guillermo Del Toro’s Monstrous Plans

e7ecd pacific rim Pacific Rim Plot Synopsis Reveals Guillermo Del Toros Monstrous Plans

Pacific Rim” has so many of my favorite things. It’s a Guillermo del Toro monster movie. It’s a callback to Kaiju and anime culture. It stars actors from three of my all-time favorite shows: Charlie Hunnam of “Sons of Anarchy,” Charlie Day of “Always Sunny,” and Idris Elba of “The Wire” (bonus points for “Luther”). I do not need to know anything else to guarantee my attendance on opening day.

That said, I won’t say no to reading the “Pacific Rim” plot synopsis, which only serves to sell the awesome-sounding movie even further. Check out the full synopsis and Legendary Pictures press release after the jump!

From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure ‘Pacific Rim.’

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Oscar nominee Guillermo del Toro (‘Pan’s Labyrinth’) is directing ‘Pacific Rim’ from a script by Travis Beacham (‘Clash of the Titans’). Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent are producing, with Callum Greene serving as executive producer.

The film stars Charlie Hunnam (TV’s ‘Sons of Anarchy’), Idris Elba (‘Thor’), Rinko Kikuchi (‘The Brothers Bloom’), Charlie Day (‘Horrible Bosses’), and Ron Perlman (the ‘Hellboy’ films). The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke.

Del Toro’s behind-the-scenes team includes Academy Award®-winning director of photography Guillermo Navarro, production designer Andrew Neskoromny, editor Peter Amundson, and costume designer Kate Hawley.

Slated for release in Summer 2013, ‘Pacific Rim’ is a presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures. The film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company

Watch It: ‘Battleship’ Goes For A ‘Drive’

fa062 battleship thumb Watch It: Battleship Goes For A Drive

Finally, a blockbuster that stands a shot at dethroning “The Avengers” (not that we’re necessarily rooting for such an outcome) sails into the scene this weekend: “Battleship,” the action flick starring Taylor Kitsch! Loosely Based on the board game of the same name, “Battleship” has already been invading theaters globally for weeks, but it’s now ready to make its domestic debut this coming weekend. One of our regular Watch It contributors checked the movie out this week, and loved what they saw.

Get more on “Battleship” and everything else we’ve been watching lately — yes, as the headline implies, you’ll get some Ryan Gosling action today — in today’s Watch It!

Joel Hanek, MTV Movies producer:
You either love it or hate it, but “Drive,” my favorite movie of 2011, is now available for streaming on Netflix. If you haven’t seen it yet, please watch it! Right, we get it, Ryan Gosling is the hottest thing on the planet (no one is disagreeing the man is Charm personified), but let’s look at the film in a bigger picture. Director Nicolas Winding Refn does a beautiful job at creating a world around a wordless character by combining a syncopating warm electronic soundtrack with the clean Nagel-esque glossy lens of LA to pull off this modern day film-noir. Not to mention that this film has the coolest supporting cast: Hank Scorpio and Hellboy (Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman) give great gangster gravitas as the film’s baddies, Bryan Cranston pushes the plot with shades of Ratso Rizzo, and Christina Hendricks, while she doesn’t have much to do, is always a great addition.

Tami Katzoff, MTV News producer:
I’m on a continuing quest to catch up on the films from last year that seemed intriguing but I somehow missed, so I recently watched “Hanna” on DVD via Netflix. It’s about a teenage girl raised in total isolation by her dad, who (for reasons too complicated to enumerate here) has taught her to be the consummate assassin. Director Joe Wright is responsible for respectable dramas such as “Pride Prejudice” and “Atonement,” so I was expecting to see a dark yet straightforward thriller. “Hanna” is not that. It’s strange and trippy and somewhat confusing. Also I’m not sure if Cate Blanchett was the right choice to play Hanna’s nemesis. But what makes “Hanna” worth a couple hours of your time is the amazing performance of Saoirse Ronan as the title character. She manages to make Hanna wise yet innocent, sweet but absolutely terrifying.

Fallon Prinzivalli, MTV Movies editorial assistant:
Amidst mixed opinions on whether “Battleship” would sink or swim at the box office, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. I went in without any expectations and thoroughly enjoyed the film. I think the biggest surprise was the humor, which is especially present in Taylor Kitsch and his “Friday Night Lights” co-star Jesse Plemons. I also want to note the audience reaction. One scene left the man in a suit who sat next to me covering his mouth in horror and two other scenes found practically the whole audience erupting in applause and celebratory cheer. There’s something to be said about a film that can unite an audience. And while I don’t claim to be a tech whiz, I thought the special effects were stunning. Overall, I recommend grabbing a few friends and heading out to see this flick. It may not be on the same level as “Avengers” (at this point, what is?), but the film stands on its own.

Kevin P. Sullivan, MTV Movies editorial assistant:
Since I consider “The Road” to be one of my favorite books of all time and “The Proposition” to be one of my favorite movies of all time, it was curious that it took me so long to watch John Hillcoat‘s adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. I didn’t actively avoid it, but I never felt compelled to sit through it until the preview for “Lawless” hit and I knew I had to. “The Road” is undoubtedly made with an amazing performance from Viggo Mortensen, but when the horrifying images are stripped of McCarthy’s poetry, they lose any shred of beauty or hope that the author stitched in.

Josh Wigler, MTV Movies Blog editor:
I’m the cheater of the group, aren’t I? I cheated by listing “Hunger Games” books instead of movies a few weeks ago, and here I am again touting the “Survivor: One World” season finale. Sorry, I just can’t help myself. I’m a lifelong “Survivor” fan — one of few who started in the very earliest seasons and hasn’t stopped watching yet — and it’s always been my pie-in-the-sky dream to be on the show. I even auditioned back in college. (No, the tape doesn’t still exist, which is a shame; I ate a cat and it was awesome.) I have no illusions that I’ll never get the chance to compete for the million bucks, but I did make it onto the show in a way I didn’t expect — by attending the live finale in New York City. It was an unforgettable experience getting to watch Jeff Probst read the votes live and grant the Sole Survivor title to all-too-deserving winner Kim Spradlin. Definitely a super-nerdy experience that I won’t soon forget. Okay, enough gushing… back to movie-watching next week, I promise!

Amy Wilkinson, Hollywood Crush editor:
Now that my cable provider is HBO Go compatible, I’m finally jumping on “The Wire” paddy wagon. (Better a decade late than never, right?) A season into the gritty crime drama, and I’m beginning to understand the near-universal reverence for this show (despite my belief that there never possibly could have been that many payphones in Baltimore). Economical yet poignant writing, coupled with nuanced performances by Dominic West and Idris Elba (actually make that the entire cast — there’s really not a weak link in the bunch) make this series worthy of much more than the two paltry Emmy nominations it received during its five-season run.

‘Prometheus’ Lands With First Official Clip

83bf7 prometheus landing Prometheus Lands With First Official Clip

After last week’s deluge of featurettes, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that Fox treated us to our first official clip from “Prometheus” today. Titled “Prometheus Has Landed,” the clip appropriately shows Prometheus landing on the alien planet where much of the movie takes place.

“Prometheus” might not be a direct “Alien” prequel, but we can certainly see plenty of the former movie’s DNA in this new clip. Everything from how the crew behaves on the ship to how they interact with each other is very similar to the way Ripley, Dallas and the crew of Nostromo act. If we ever needed more proof that this is a Ridley Scott film we’re dealing with, this clip is it.

The big difference between “Alien” and “Prometheus,” though, is that the Nostromo stumbled across another alien species while the crew of the Prometheus is actively seeking one out. That much can be seen in this spoiler-free clip when Logan Marshall-Green’s character points the Prometheus’ captain, played by Idris Elba, towards a man (or alien)-made structure.

“God does not build in straight lines,” he says.

That quote seems to be particularly telling about the movie as a whole. In a new interview, Damon Lindelof said that “Prometheus” will toe the line between scientific and religious beliefs.

“Classic sci-fi, to me, is based on the principle that science has the opportunity to cross a line — the line is defined by cultural and religious ideas. Should we do this? Are we breaking God’s will by doing this? That’s sci-fi,” he teased about the launching point for “Prometheus.” “So the idea of just because we have the technology to create life, should we create life? This is the be careful what you wished for, I shouldn’t have crossed that line story, which is what all sci-fi is.”

“Prometheus” is due out in theaters on June 8. It stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Elba, Marshall-Green and Charlize Theron.

‘Thor 2′ Will Be ‘Huge,’ Idris Elba Promises

A movie like “The Avengers” doesn’t just make $1 billion in a little less than 20 days without having a few sequels already in the pipeline. So, of course, the folks over at Marvel are already hard at work on a handful of follow-ups, including “Thor 2.”

MTV News spoke with Idris Elba while he was promoting Prometheus” about reprising his role as the Asgardian gatekeeper, Heimdall, for the sequel, once again starring Chris Hemsworth in the title role. “Thor 2,” which is scheduled to head into production later this year, is said to explore the other realms of the universe, outside of Asgard and Earth, so that would mean a heavier workload for Heimdall.

Though production has not officially begun, Elba has already started some prep. “I’m actually excited about it,” he said. “I literally just did a costume fitting the other day.”

Elba, who has only seen an outline of the story so far, said that he does anticipate a larger role for Heimdall in the sequel, but added that “Thor 2″ will also be taking a closer look at the people who populate the mythical world. “Definitely Heimdall‘s more involved, but also, what’s more involved is who the Asgardians are,” he said. “I think we’ll see a sense of that.”

As past interviews with the cast have indicated, the scale of “Thor 2″ is quite large, but Elba suggested that the focus narrows in on character in a way we haven’t seen before. “It’s a huge film, ‘Thor 2,’ but I also think it’s micro in a way that you start to look at people, who they are a little bit more.”
