Galactus For Daredevil: Looking At Marvel And Fox’s Rumored Trade

Put your bibs on, True Believers — if Marvel gets its way, we’ll be dining on planets very soon. But first, an amuse bouche in the form of some back story.

Marvel Studios does not own the film rights to all of its characters. Spider-Man and Ghost Rider live at Sony. Wolverine and the X-Men are at Fox. Also at Fox are the blind superhero Daredevil and Marvel’s first family, the Fantastic Four. Those latter two properties are especially big priorities for Fox, as deadlines are looming for the studio to get films based on those characters into production soon, or else the rights revert back to Marvel. A “Daredevil” film in particular needs to be underway by this fall, or else the Man Without Fear goes to Disney land and never comes back. That outcome is looking likelier and likelier with each passing day.

But Marvel is reportedly trying to work out a new deal with Fox that’ll keep the “Daredevil” franchise exactly where it is, in exchange for reverted rights to key characters from the “Fantastic Four” franchise — the Silver Surfer and Galactus specifically, both of whom are huge players on the cosmic side of the Marvel Universe, and both of whom previously appeared in Fox’s “Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer.”

While the latest update suggests that the deal won’t happen, we’re still left to wonder about all of the possibilities currently at play. The way we see it, there are three options, all of them with potential ups and downs. Keep reading for the breakdown of the rumored Marvel-Fox trade.

Marvel Gets Galactus, Fox Keeps Daredevil
Fox had their shot at Galactus, and they blew it in a big cloud of smoke — literally. If anyone can render a big-screen Devourer of Worlds in all of his Jack Kirby glory, it’s the folks at Marvel Studios. With “Guardians of the Galaxy” just two years away and “The Avengers” sequel likely to go deeper into the cosmos, having Galactus and Silver Surfer on hand would be wonderful for everybody. Sure, it keeps Matt Murdock away from the House of Ideas’ home base, but they don’t call him the Man Without Fear for nothing — after the Ben Affleck adaptation, there’s truly nowhere for a “Daredevil” movie to go but up, even at Fox.

Marvel Gets Daredevil, Doesn’t Get Galactus
Marvel Studios has four movies officially on the calendar through August 2014, with concrete “Ant-Man” and “Avengers 2″ release dates likely to drop before the end of the year. There’s little room for a “Daredevil” movie before 2015 at earliest, then — and even in that case, Marvel would have to sacrifice other deserving characters (looking at you, Black Panther and Doctor Strange) in order to make a “Daredevil” movie happen. It’s my humble suggestion that if Marvel does get the “Daredevil” rights back (and, by extension, misses on the cosmic wins), they use Murdock as the centerpiece of the rumored Marvel Cinematic Universe television series. Daredevil has limitless possibilities for strong, episodic television; the Frank Miller, Brian Bendis, Ed Brubaker and Mark Waid runs all have distinct flavors that would translate wonderfully to the small screen. Add recurring special guest stars like Elektra, Iron First and even the Punisher, and Marvel would have its first major live-action television series success on its hands. It’s just one fan’s opinion, but it’s a no-brainer to me.

Fox Keeps Daredevil Galactus, Marvel Gets Zilch
The worst case scenario, right? Not necessarily. It’s early days yet, but there’s reason to believe that Fox is turning a corner on its comic book properties. “X-Men First Class” was phenomenal, “The Wolverine” has great potential, “Fantastic Four” has up-and-coming “Chronicle” director Josh Trank attached, and Joe Carnahan is a very solid choice for “Daredevil.” We could be looking at great things for the Fox-owned Marvel properties coming down the line. We’ll just have to live by Murdock’s example and embrace the future without fear.

‘Dark Knight Rises’: Who Could Helm A Fourth Film?

There have been conflicting reports about the future of the current Batman series. This past weekend, director Christopher Nolan told the Produced by Conference that he definitively does not plan on making a fourth Batman movie. This news comes just a week after Christian Bale said that he would be open to a fourth movie if the conditions were right.

Could there be a “Dark Knight” movie without the series’ original mastermind? Even if Bale stayed on, losing Nolan would leave an impossible gap in the film, one we don’t necessarily think should be filled.

But if there had to be a replacement, who could possibly take the reins from Nolan? Here are our picks for directors to take over the “Dark Knight” series.

Duncan Jones
With two ambitious sci-fi films under his belt, Duncan Jones has quickly established himself as a genre director worth paying attention to. His first film, “Moon,” is one of the best films in the genre from the last few years, and “Source Code” showed that he can handle a bigger budget and high concept in a smart and entertaining way. Jones recently signed on to direct a biopic based on the life of James Bond author Ian Flemming, so he’ll be busy for a while, but his sensibilities combine the right elements so that a superhero film would seem natural to him.

Joe Carnahan
Carnahan has been directing for a while now, but it wasn’t until this year’s “The Grey” that he showed he could handle more serious material with style. Starring Ra’s Al Ghul himself, Liam Neeson, “The Grey” took a rather absurd concept and grounded it in human drama. What really makes Batman resonate is the man beneath the mask, and, like Ottway in “The Grey,” Bruce Wayne keeps much of his pain to himself and speaks through his acts of justice.

Darren Aronofsky
The man is just itching to make a superhero movie. His take on the Dark Knight petered out, allowing Nolan to take over and make what eventually became “Batman Begins.” Aronofsky then signed on to direct Hugh Jackman in the follow-up to “X-Men Legends: Wolverine,” but he dropped out, claiming he couldn’t be away from his family while shooting in Japan. One of the most stylistically exciting directors working today, he seems dead-set on eventually directing a superhero flick. Just let him already!

Rian Johnson
Johnson is set to make waves with his next film, “Looper,” which opens in theaters in September. That film’s mashup of crime film and time travel movie, considered next to Johnson’s first movie, “Brick,” prove that Rian is a director that takes genre seriously and would be able to handle the multiple dimensions of directing a film like Batman. We previously suggested that he could reboot the series with “Batman Beyond.”

Wally Pfister
Perhaps the man best suited to take over for Nolan is his long-time collaborator and director of photography Wally Pfister. The Academy Award-winning cinematographer got his big break shooting “Memento” for Nolan all those years ago, and he’s now set to shift his focus to primarily directing films. Pfister is the least experienced of the directors on this list, but he also has the most intimate knowledge about what worked so well throughout the current series.

Who do you think should direct a fourth “Batman” flick? Leave your pick below!

Exclusive ‘The Grey’ Deleted Scene: Liam Neeson Goes A-Huntin’

The Grey,” or as it had been previously known “Liam Neeson Versus Wolves,” genuinely surprised audiences back in January by being a lot sharper and deeper than the month’s usual fare. Neeson led an ensemble cast as Ottway, a hardnosed wolf hunter who takes charge of the survivors of a plane crash once they’re stranded in the Alaskan wilderness.

To celebrate the Blu-ray and DVD release of “The Grey,” we have an exclusive deleted scene from the film, which takes place shortly after the wreck. It gives you a pretty good idea of that tone of the film with the survivors occasionally joking about their need to keep going.

“A-Team” helmer Joe Carnahan directed and co-wrote “The Grey,” which found fans not only among audiences, but with critics as well. The Blu-ray features more deleted scenes, pre-viz and a commentary track from Carnahan.
