On ‘Wedding Bells,’ Nick Jonas Takes Cues From Taylor Swift’s Playbook

As they stage their long-awaited comeback, the Jonas Brothers have made one thing clear: they aren’t afraid to get “uncomfortable” on their new music.

Before debuting “Wedding Bells” at their comeback show at New York’s Radio City Music Hall, Kevin Jonas told the crowd, “I don’t think I’ve ever written a song that makes me as uncomfortable as this song does.” Just how uncomfortable? Enough that his ex-girlfriend Miley Cyrus recently told Glamour that it’s “pretty blatant” it’s about her. Pretty darn uncomfortable.

If he knows what’s good for him, Kevin will take some trusty cues from Taylor Swift‘s playbook. Because if anyone knows how to write a breakup track, it’s Taylor.

Make It Obvious Whom It’s About
Notorious for penning about lost love, Taylor Swift has never shied away from including just enough details to identify her subjects without flat-out spelling it out. In 2009, the then 19-year-old country singer reportedly began dating then-32-year-old Casanova John Mayer in 2009, when the two started working on music together. Fast forward one year, and we’re introduced to “Dear John,” which finds Swift crooning, “Dear John, I see it all now that you’re gone/ Don’t think I was too young to be messed with?/ The girl in the dress cried the whole way home/ I should’ve known.” By all means, we’re not suggesting it’s about Mayer. It just happens to be a song about dating another guy. That just happens to have the name John in the title.

Similarly, while “Wedding Bells,” never mentions the name “Miley,” there are lyrical cues that tell us this is more than coincidence. The most flagrant signal comes when Jonas croons, “If you recall our anniversary falls/ Eleven nights into June.” In her autobiography (yes, she already has one), Cyrus writes, “I remember the exact date, June 11, 2006. It was the day I met my first love. Let’s call him Prince Charming.” Once again, we’re not assuming. This could all be coincidence.

Never Admit Whom It’s About
If there’s one thing Swift has mastered besides relentlessly topping the charts, it’s the art of playing coy. Even after all the rumors surrounding “Dear John,” Swift insisted that the title didn’t mean anything.

Apparently, Mayer didn’t buy it. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the ladies’ man said he was “humiliated” by the track. (“I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you’ve ever been, someone kicked you even lower?” he said.) Staying true to her strict keep-it-vague rule, Swift later called Mayer “presumptuous” for assuming the track was about him in an interview with Glamour.

Don’t Be Afraid Of Getting Vulnerable
On “Wedding Bells,” Kevin has no fear of being vulnerable, admitting that he “doesn’t want to hear the wedding bells chime” and pining for one last shot with his ex. “No, I don’t wanna love/ If it’s not you/ I don’t wanna hear the wedding bells bloom/ Maybe we can try/ One last time/ But I don’t wanna hear the wedding bells chime,” he sings.

Sounds awfully “Back to December,” doesn’t it? On the 2010 track, which was presumably about another famous ex, Taylor Lautner, Swift has no fear of “swallowing her pride” and admitting that she may miss him a little bit after all.

Jonas Brothers Recreate ‘Hunger Games’ During Recording Sessions

The Jonas Brothers are certainly in full-on comeback mode these days, with shows slated around the globe and an album in the works. And, while fans have been invited into some of their recording sessions on big brother Kevin’s reality show, “Married To Jonas,” there’s certainly been one or two artistic scuffles left on the cutting room floor.

When MTV News caught up with the Jonas Brothers last week, ahead of their first reunion gig at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, the guys opened up about some of the verbal fisticuffs that have taken place over the course of recording this next album.

“No physical altercations, but yeah, you have to disagree to get what you want,” Nick said. “Disagree to agree. It works out because we have a voting system. Then we go to our management team if it doesn’t work. If you feel strongly about something, I think it’s always important to stick by it. The great thing, at the end of the day, is I think we all have a vision for where we want to go and know that we’re just trying got get the best out of [the sessions].”

While it may all end well, is there one Jonas Brother who tends to make the most noise in those battles? “I think we all do [win], in a weird way,” Kevin noted, with Joe joking, “I usually [win]. I will use weapons if need be. ‘Hunger Games‘ in the studio.”

While they confirm that they have not yet nailed down any release dates for singles or videos, they did play several new tracks during last week’s Radio City gig, which MTV News attended. But in the days since, only one, titled “Wedding Bells,” is receiving all the attention. The lyrics, which we dissected last week, seem to point to the fact that it might be about Nick’s ex, Miley Cyrus, and her engagement to, interestingly enough, “Hunger Games” actor Liam Hemsworth.

And, while the guys haven’t confirmed the song’s subject (Miley’s convinced it’s about her), they did share that this album just might be their most personal to date.

“We’re talking about some really real subjects and things that are meaningful to us both in the present time, in the past, and it’s just now out there for people to hear,” Nick said. “That’s the great thing about being an artist, is you can create and then share later.”

Miley Cyrus Thinks Nick Jonas’ ‘Wedding Bells’ Is ‘Pretty Blatant’

For anyone wondering what Nick Jonas thought about Miley Cyrus‘ engagement to “Hunger Games” star Liam Hemsworth, he may have shared his sentiments on the impending nuptials last Thursday in New York City.

The singer premiered a spankin’ new Jonas Brothers track, and there are clues buried in the lyrics suggesting it’s about his former flame. While we may never know whom “Wedding Bells” is about, Miley certainly thinks that her ex is singing about her on it.

“I don’t know who else is getting married. … So I feel like that’s pretty blatant, it’s whatever. Like I said, everyone has to write songs that are about things that they felt and he even introduced that this isn’t the way that I am,” she told Ryan Seacrest on Thursday (October 18) about the song.

She added, “So, you can’t ever hate on someone for writing about something you’ve been through. I think that you kind of get a fair warning when you date an artist and someone that’s a writer. When you’re going through things that you’re going to end up hearing about it on the radio. I don’t know…wedding bells are in my future, so I don’t know.”

Miley herself is also busy working on new tunes, so fans may get to hear her side of the story on it. “I’ve been working with Pharrell a lot and working with Dr. Luke. There’s a good mix on this record of songs that are kind of about things that I’ve gone through and making this album after I just got engaged and all this. But also just some fun party songs too,” she said, before sharing that a new song may drop before the end of the year.

New music might be down the road a bit, but her episode of “Two and a Half Men,” premieres Thursday night. And, the singer/actress is pretty excited for fans to see what she’ll be up to on the hit CBS sitcom.

“I’ve been wanting to work with Ashton [Kutcher] forever and I couldn’t really take time away to do a movie from my record right now. So, we wanted to work together, then we thought ‘Two and a Half Men‘ would be the quick and easy way to do it. It turned out to be something that I loved so much I came back for a second episode,” she said, before opening up a bit about her character, Missi.

“I think it’s fun for the show, because what we thought was fun about my character is everyone that came on, even when Charlie was there, it was, ‘Who’s going to sleep with Charlie?’ or, ‘Who’s going to sleep with Ashton?’ And that’s so not my character,” she said. “My character is just so in your face and blunt and really kind of puts Ashton back in his place. It’s really fun and they’ve never really had a girl character come on like that.”

Jonas Brothers Getting ‘Deeper’ On Next Phase Of Music

The Jonas Brothers are currently laying the groundwork for their next phase as a group. After a successful reunion show last week at Radio City, fans might be wondering just what the next move is for the guys.

While the New York show marks their only scheduled Stateside comeback gig for the moment, they have booked several gigs abroad. On top of that, they’re putting the finishing touches on their next studio release.

Is the Jonas Brothers’ new song “Wedding Bells” about Miley Cyrus? We investigate!

“The vibe right now that we’re trying to create, we’ve kind of a really memorable and a career we’re really thankful for up until this time, [and now we're] hoping to create an experience for our fans that is really personal and shows a little bit deeper look into what our lives have been like, as far as lyrics,” Nick said. “But, musically we’re trying to push ourselves and continue to grow and get better.”

The guys are definitely pushing themselves, as evidenced by one deeply personal track they played at the last gig, billed as “Wedding Bells.” The song has some speculating it might be about Nick’s former flame, Miley Cyrus, and her engagement to actor Liam Hemsworth.

The guys also previewed two other tracks, “Let’s Go” and “First Time,” but they aren’t saying if either of those tunes will be their single. “No, actually, we don’t [have any release dates yet,] but hopefully soon, it’s kind of the kickoff so … check back in,” Kevin said.

Regardless of when they drop an official single, Joe knows that ahead of its release the guys had some serious discussions about what this era will look and sound like.

“For us, the biggest moments we spoke about, it started with the music first. We wanted to sit in the studio and create new sounds that we were inspired by… getting in the studio and focusing on that,” he said. “And then the touring side, like how long do we want to tour for and kind of getting our stage and all that stuff.”

Jonas Brothers Call Nick-Free ‘American Idol’ Feuds ‘Perfect’

By all accounts, Nick Jonas had been in some pretty serious talks to join the “American Idol” judging panel over the summer. But, as summer cooled off, so did those discussions.

In the end, Nick explained, it just wasn’t the right time, as the Jonas Brothers were knee-deep in launching their comeback.”I think it’s one of those things where it wasn’t right on both sides,” he told MTV News.

Of course with Jonas out of the running, it made room for Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey and Keith Urban to sit at the famed judges table. And, it also spared him from being in the middle of the Carey/Minaj feud that kicked into high-gear earlier this month before dying down.

Nick is giving the current set of judges his two-thumbs up. He said, “I think the panel they have is pretty solid; it’s going to be highly entertaining.”

Entertaining indeed, given all the fighting the judges have already displayed on the road, on Twitter and in interviews. So, how do the other Jonas Brothers feel about all the Nick-free drama?

“It seems they all hate each other already, so it’s perfect,” Joe teased, with big brother Kevin adding, “Exactly what you want in life.”

While fans won’t get the chance to see Nick judge talent on a weekly basis, he did appear alongside pal Demi Lovato on last week’s “X Factor” where he helped her sort through the potential members to compete on her team on the show. So, how what kind of judge does he consider himself after filming the cameo?

“I was really honest. I don’t know if I was too honest or not, but I know that it was great to work with Demi on that,” he said.

Nick Jonas Ready To Vote Next Month … Wherever He Is

When the Jonas Brothers made their debut as a band in 2005, baby bro Nick Jonas was just 14 years old. Back then, we’re pretty sure he was more focused on his freshman year of high school (and maybe Miley Cyrus) than he was on politics.

Fast-forward to 2012: Jonas just turned 20 and is looking forward to voting in his very first presidential election next month. In our Power of 12 countdown to Election Day on November 6 (we’re just 23 days away!), we asked Jonas for his thoughts on the fast-approaching milestone.

“I’m really excited to vote,” Jonas told MTV News during rehearsals for his Radio City Music Hall reunion gig with his big brothers. “I’ve always tried to pay attention to politics and sort of formulate my views and opinions in the past elections where I wasn’t able to vote. But now that I’m able to vote, I’m really looking forward to it.”

Just one problem: The Jonas Brothers won’t be in the States come November 6.

“We’re going to be out of the country, so I’ve got to work out what I can do there,” Nick said, before the oldest (and wisest) brother, “Married to Jonas” star Kevin Jonas, chimed in with a solution: “Absentee ballot.”

That’s right, Kev! Head over to PowerOf12.org to find out all about absentee voting, whether you qualify (Nick’s excuse definitely holds up) and how to sign up in your state. But make sure you’re registered to vote first.

One thing’s for sure: Some travel plans are definitely not going to keep Nick from choosing between President Barack Obama and former Governor Mitt Romney next month. “It’s an interesting election for sure,” he said.

Jonas Brothers’ ‘Wedding Bells’: Three Clues It’s About Miley Cyrus

Nick Jonas is wearing his heart on his sleeve on the brand-new Jonas Brothers track “Wedding Bells,” which the JoBros performed for the first time Thursday night during their big reunion show at New York’s Radio City Music Hall.

Taking a closer look at the lyrics, MTV News can’t help but wonder if the song is about Nick’s ex-girlfriend, Miley Cyrus, getting engaged to “Hunger Games” star Liam Hemsworth earlier this year. Nick’s introduction of the song had us even more curious.

“We’re in the process of recording a new album, which is both good and bad,” Nick confessed, adding that the bad means he had to “dive into subjects that make us uncomfortable and write about them. … You have to write a song and apologize for it later. I don’t think I’ve ever written a song that makes me as uncomfortable as this song does. Some things happened in the last year that affected me in that moment. … This song is called ‘Wedding Bells.’ “

While we might never truly know what was going on in Nick’s head when he wrote the song, the brothers did tell MTV News that their next album gets much more personal than ever before. Until we hear the rest of the new music, let’s break down some of the Miley-related clues on “Wedding Bells” to get to the bottom of this matrimonial mystery:

Clue #1
As the song opens, Nick shares a conversation he had with the mystery girl. “She says, ‘Can you keep a secret?/ A ceremony’s set for June/ I know it’s a rush, but I just love him so much/ I hope that you can meet him soon.’ ” Sure, Miley and Liam didn’t get married in June, but that is when the couple announced their engagement, making the “ceremony” reference a fitting stand-in for engagement. (Or perhaps the wedding is set for June 2013 — get ready, paparazzi helicopters!)

Clue #2
Niley (as they were dubbed) had a bit of an on-again, off-again relationship. They got back together one last time in 2009, right before she met Hemsworth on the set of “The Last Song” that summer. So those make-ups and breakups might be what Jonas is referencing on the chorus when he sings a plea for one final reconciliation. “I don’t want to love, if it’s not you/ I don’t want to hear the wedding bells bloom/ Maybe we can try one last time/ But I don’t want to hear the wedding bells chime.”

Clue #3
The biggest smoking gun in this tune is when Nick croons, “If you recall our anniversary falls/ Eleven nights into June.” Any Niley fan should know that happens to be the date the former couple met for the first time, as documented in Cyrus’ autobiography“Miles to Go.” In the book, Miley writes, “I remember the exact date, June 11, 2006. It was the day I met my first love. Let’s call him Prince Charming. I don’t want to use his name, because this isn’t about who he is or what I meant to him. It’s about how I felt and what our relationship meant to me.”

Jonas Brothers Debuting New Music Next Week?

If you haven’t heard, the Jonas Brothers are prepping for their big comeback. Nick, Joe and Kevin are inching closer to giving fans something solid to listen to.

On big brother Kevin’s reality show, “Married to Jonas,” they’ve broached the comeback topic on several occasions, including this past episode when they teased an in-the-works new tune.

While the guys recently told MTV News they want to release a brand-new single “as soon as possible,” it’s unclear if the song they recorded during this week’s episode is that single.

What is clear is that the fellas are sticking to the Jonas music formula of bouncing pop tunes grounded in organic instrumentation.

In the tease, Nick croons over an airy beat and melody, “I’ll meet you in Paris/ Somewhere in dreamland come to life/ That smile you’re wearing/ Keeps me believing, keeps me alive/ We’ll be the king and queen to our broken scene/Meet you in Paris/ Meet you in Paris.”

The teaser is only one piece of the puzzle as the guys prep for their highly anticipated comeback performance at Radio City Music Hall on October 11. And, it seems that it will not only mark the first time they’ve played together after a lengthy hiatus, but also the night they might finally play some new music.

“We are so excited to share our new music with you SOON! 10/11/12 #JBRadioCity,” they tweeted about the show, which comes after months spent in the studio.

With fans hoping to hear something new as soon as next week, Kevin noted that anything is possible with those tunes.

“We’ve done some out-of-the-box things. We’ve done some things that are rocky, poppy, country-ish. We’ve done everything,” he said. “I think this album, people are like ‘Where’s the new music?’ And I think they’re waiting for new music to come out so quickly. But really, we’ve been cultivating it for so long, we really want to spend the time needed to make it as perfect as can be because so much is riding on this album for us. … We’ve been gone for so long that if it’s not right, then it could go very badly.”

He added, “So, hopefully, people accept the avenue that we’re going down. I’m really looking forward to people hearing the new music.”

Jonas Brothers Say New Song Is Coming ‘Very Soon’

LAS VEGAS — Although Nick, Kevin and Joe Jonas had an official job to do at the iHeartRadio Music Festival — introduce Enrique Iglesias — the most dedicated and astute fans might assume that their appearance at the two-day, star-studded festival meant the boys have some music news to make in the very near future. According to the JoBros themselves, those assumptions would be correct.

When MTV News caught up with Nick, Kevin and Joe just before their Enrique intro on Saturday night, we asked them that very question.

“It could just mean that we heart radio and this is a combination of our love,” Nick joked. “No, but it does mean that the album is coming along and that we’re days, if not hours away from choosing a single so it’s very exciting. We’ve got a good team around us and we’re excited to get the music out there for our fans.”

As for when we might hear said single, the guys don’t have an official release date or goal set yet.

“As soon as possible,” Kevin said of their preferred release.

“Yeah, we want to do it really quickly,” added Joe. “Luckily, we’re in a position where we get to decide if we wanted to do it tonight, but I think we’re kind of lining it up to our show we have at Radio City coming up very soon, so it should be around that time.”

So is this a get-up-and-dance single or a slow ballad or what?

“It’s a ‘Get-up-and-then-sit-down-and-then-dance’ [single],” Joe teased.

“Wow, that’s deep,” said Nick. “It’s a little bit of a, especially for us to describe it, it’s something that people can dance to that also puts them in a place, brings them to a certain atmosphere, gives them a vibe about the seasons that we’ve been through these last three years in sort of doing our own thing.”

Justin Bieber, One Direction Top Billboard 21 Under 21 List

It doesn’t take a formal list to know that Justin Bieber and the guys of One Direction are biggest stars under 21 right now. So, it’s not really surprising they top Billboard ‘s 21 Under 21: Music’s Hottest Minors 2012.

Justin Bieber is the hottest youngster on the scene. He’s currently prepping a world tour, and just wrapped up a music video for his latest single, the Nicki Minaj-assisted “Beauty and a Beat,” off his #1 Believealbum.

“I was very involved in the process [of making this album] — I played instruments, produced, wrote — so I want people to know it’s not all hype,” he told MTV News about prepping his highly anticipated album. “I want people to know I’ve been working hard on my music. Focus on the music. Don’t think I’m just this product pushed out there. I work hard, and music is really important to me.”

Runners up One Direction took their fandom international when they dropped their debut album, and they haven’t looked back. The British boy band is prepping the release of their sophomore album release, Take Me Home, and have fans buzzing with excitement for the release of its lead single, “Live While We’re Young.”

Demi Lovato is the only lady in the top three. Sitting at #3, the “X Factor” judge has reinvented her career and launched herself as a pop star (her song “Give Your Heart A Break” recently went to #1 on the charts).

“The reception for my single is so amazing,” she told MTV News. “It’s been going up the charts for a while now and right now I actually have my first #1 single, so that’s really exciting for me. It means so much to me. I never thought I’d be blessed enough to have this opportunity and here I am.”

The remainder of the top 10 is incredibly diverse. “American Idol” singer Scotty McCreery narrowly missed the top spots at #4, with rap sensation Mac Miller right behind at #5. Bieber’s best girl, Selena Gomez, fell to #6 this year after a top-three appearance on the 2011 list. EDM star Porter Robinson leaped to #7 after appearing on the list last year at #18.

One-time “X Factor” contestant Cher Lloyd is #8, followed by Odd Future’s Earl Sweatshirt, who beat out Nick Jonas. Nick made the top 10 thanks to the recent reunion of the Jonas Brothers and his presence on Broadway.

The rest of the list is filled out with a mixed bag of viral sensations, international stars and small-screen talent including, diva-in-training Jackie Evancho (#11), Cody Simpson (#12), boy banders Mindless Behavior (#13), YouTube sensations Megan and Liz (#14), Korean pop singer IU (#15), Disney princess Bridgit Mendler (#16), Mexican pop band 3Ball MTY (#17), Miley Cyrus (#18), up-and-coming dance producer Madeon (#19), Disney star Ross Lynch (#20) and Victoria Justice (#21).
