Ewan McGregor Replaces Bradley Cooper In ‘Jane Got A Gun’

Ewan McGregor Replaces Bradley Cooper In Jane Got A Gun

The troubled production “Jane Got A Gun” might have recently lost Bradley Cooper as the film’s antagonist, but a replacement has already been found.

Deadline is reporting that Ewan McGregor is locked down for the “pivotal role of the leader of an outlaw gang” in the Gavin O’Connor-directed film. This will be a bit of a reunion for McGregor, who previously starred with leading lady Natalie Portman in the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy. Noah Emmerich plays Portman’s character’s husband, and Joel Edgerton plays her former flame.

In other casting news, Benicio Del Toro is in talks for Paul Thomas Anderson‘s latest and Keira Knightley could replace Anne Hathaway in an upcoming indie. Get more info about those two projects after the jump!

Benicio Del Toro In Talks To Star In “Inherent Vice”

Paul Thomas Anderson is pulling together a strong cast for his upcoming project “Inherent Vice.” Joaquin Phoenix is already tapped to play a stoner private eye who is trying to find a missing girlfriend, and now TheWrap reports that Benicio Del Toro is in talks to play Phoenix’s character’s lawyer friend. Meanwhile, Cigarettes and Red Vines has learned that Kevin J. O’Connor will have a role in the movie as well.

Keira Knightley Could Join “Laggies”

Anne Hathaway has been forced to back out of the Lynn Shelton film “Laggies,” so now Keira Knightley has stepped forward to take her place. Entertainment Weekly reports that Knightley is in talks for the part, which would have her starring opposite Chloe Moretz. She would play a woman who responds to her boyfriend’s proposal by pretending to go on a business retreat, though she really just hangs out with her new 16-year-old friend.

How Keira Knightley Fell For ‘Manipulative And Cruel’ Anna Karenina

By Colin Greten

When “Pride and Prejudice” and “Atonement” director Joe Wright was picked to helm another piece of classic literature in “Anna Karenina,” it came as no surprise who he picked to play his lead. Keira Knightley has seen her acting career flourish in these types of roles. While she has had success in other roles her most critical success comes from her collaborations with Wright, resulting in two Golden Globe nominations and an Oscar nod.

In a recent interview with MTV News Knightley explained how her relationship with her title character, “Anna Karenina” has changed over time. After regrettably dropping out of school (“I was feeling really stupid,” she cracked), the actress felt the need to read more books to keep her hesitations at ease. In reading the classic Russian tome, she originally found the character of Anna to be a sweet, innocent girl. However, after rereading the book in preparation for her upcoming role, she found herself hating Anna more than she ever would have thought. She explained that Anna is “not as nice as I thought she was.”

“I think it’s more interesting when you have characters where you don’t know how you feel about them the whole time. I do sympathize with her and I do love her,” she continued. “But you also go, ‘She is manipulative and cruel and duplicitous.”

Knightley’s changing opinion of Anna proves just how far she has come as an actress. While many actresses research and work to truly become the roles that they play, it is clear Knightly thinks about it on a whole different level. Her struggle with the character of Anna is intriguing as perhaps the character experiences the same struggle.

While Anna can be seen as innocent, she is also the manipulative character that Knightley discovered last summer. “Anna Karenina” premieres in a limited release today, and if the Knightly/Wright combo has shown audiences anything, it’s that they are perfectly suited to tackle this type of project.

Sandy Washes Out Late-Night Tapings, Journey Show

As massive storm Sandy (downgraded from hurricane status once it hit land late Monday) continues to wreak havoc on the East Coast, she’s leaving a multitude of cancellations in her path.

In addition to the previously announced interruptions of presidential campaigning, TV and film production, the latest casualty is night one of Jimmy Kimmel‘s week-long series of tapings in Brooklyn, New York.

Kimmel took to Twitter to make the announcement to his fans. “Though it pains us to do it, JKL from #Brooklyn tonight is cancelled,” he wrote. “I’m disappointed too, but we want you to be safe.”

Kimmel’s show wasn’t the only late-night talk show affected: “The Late Show With David Letterman” and “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” were forced to tape their episodes without their usual live studio audiences, while Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert over at Comedy Central chose to take Monday night off.

No word yet on whether tapings will resume as scheduled on Tuesday.

Freedom to Love Now!, a benefit concert for marriage equality that was set to feature Fun., Rufus Wainwright, the National and other artists, has been postponed from Tuesday night to spring 2013, according to a press release. Billboard reports that concerts from Journey (Brooklyn’s brand-new Barclays Center) and Grouplove (Washington, D.C.’s 9:30 Club) have also been canceled for Tuesday.

The New York City premiere of “Anna Karenina” — the film adaptation of Leo Tolstoy‘s classic book, starring Keira Knightley and helmed by her “Atonement” director Joe Wright — has also been set back by Sandy, Entertainment Weekly reports. The film premieres in Los Angeles on November 14.

Keira Knightley And Aaron Johnson Picnic In ‘Anna Karenina’ Image

Keira Knightley And Aaron Johnson Picnic In Anna Karenina Image

Ever since the 2007 release of “Atonement,” we’ve been dying to see Keira Knightley and director Joe Wright work together again. The two have teamed up on both that film and “Pride Prejudice,” but it’s their next project that looks like it will really take their partnership to the next level.

As part of our Fall Movie Preview Week, we can present to you an exclusive new look at Knightley and Wright’s adaptation of “Anna Karenina.” Considering the way in which Leo Tolstoy‘s eponymous novel plays out, we doubt main characters Anna Karenina (Knightley) and Vronsky (Aaron Johnson) will look this happy for much longer. So enjoy those smiles while you can, fans of Knightey and Wright, because the story is likely to get much more somber soon after this.

What’s most interesting about this image is the fact that it takes place outside of the “theatrical” setting that most of Wright’s film takes place in. Wright shot the majority of the film on location in a dilapidated theater, which explains why the trailer kept returning to that setting. Wright described this connection in a recent featurette as being a metaphor of the way “the Russian aristocracy of the 19th century could be described as living on a stage.”

Based on Tolstoy’s novel of the same name, “Anna Karenina” follows the title character through her love affair with an army officer, all set against the backdrop of 19th century Russia. Knightley plays Anna, Jude Law portrays her husband Alexei Karenin and Johnson her lover Vronsky. “Anna Karenina” is due in US theaters on November 16.

Kevin Costner And Tom Hardy Eyed For Tom Clancy Films

fa137 Costner Hardy Kevin Costner And Tom Hardy Eyed For Tom Clancy Films

It turns out that Kevin Costner could be the Nick Fury of Paramount’s “Jack Ryan” film franchise going forward.

The “Man of Steel” actor is in talks to join “Jack Ryan,” the as-yet-untitled next movie to be based on Tom Clancy‘s book series about the titular character. But Deadline is reporting that Costner is also in talks to join the spinoff franchise called “Without Remorse” as the link between the two movies.

Costner would play William Harper, a character unique to the films who is described as “a true blue American idealist who recruits and mentors both Ryan and John Kelly.” While the “Jack Ryan” movie will center around Ryan, “Without Remorse” would tell the story of John Kelly, who by the end of the movie becomes the CIA operative John Clark.

Deadline also reports that Paramount is looking to Tom Hardy to play John Kelly in “Without Remorse.” The actor has already proved he has action chops in movies like “Inception” and “The Dark Knight Rises,” and is next starring in “Mad Max: Fury Road” as the titular character. He would be a great pick for “Without Remorse,” and has already shown he has great chemistry with Pine in the romantic comedy “This Means War.” Appropriately, they play two CIA agents in that film.

Following those two movies, the plan could potentially be to give Costner his own feature film as Harper. For now, we’re just interested in filming for “Jack Ryan” to get underway — and for the movie to get an official title. Kenneth Branagh is directing the project and also is playing its villain. Keira Knightley is at the top of the list to play the film’s leading lady. “Without Remorse” will be directed by Christopher McQuarrie.

‘Brave’ Wards Off Box-Office Competition

There’s nothing unlucky about the number 13 for Disney/Pixar. Over the weekend, “Brave” became the 13th consecutive film from the animation unit behind “Toy Story” and “Wall-E” to debut at #1. The animated archery adventure hit a box-office bull’s-eye to the tune of $66.7 million, according to estimates. And cartoons dominated the weekend box office as DreamWorks’ “Madagascar 3″ landed at #2.

Unfortunately for Fox, “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” was not so lucky. The $69 million-budget historical/ fantasy mash-up opened at #3 with just $16.5 million.

“Brave” opened stronger than last year’s “Cars 2,” which bears the distinction of being the only Pixar film with a “rotten” critical average on Rotten Tomatoes. While reviews for “Brave” weren’t as overwhelmingly enthusiastic as those for flicks like “Toy Story 3″ and “Wall-E,” the studio’s latest still boasts a 74 percent score on the film-review-aggregator site.

The opening numbers for “Brave” were the fifth-highest for Pixar (ninth when adjusted for ticket price inflation). “Toy Story 3″ ranks at #1 in both categories, with its astonishing $110 million opening (on slightly fewer screens than “Brave,” to boot) two years ago. Audiences gave “Brave” a CinemaScore of “A.”

“Brave” is the first Disney/Pixar to center on a female protagonist, telling the story of a Scottish princess who bucks tradition to shape her own destiny. It was nearly the first Pixar film to be directed by a woman too. Brenda Chapman, who conceived the story, was replaced mid-production by Mark Andrews.

Box-office prognosticators were right on the money late last week when it came to “Brave,” but the numbers for “Lincoln” were even lower than most of them projected. IMDb’s Keith Simanton told MTV News that the Tim Burton-produced book adaptation would need to match the $23 million collected by “Zombieland” on opening weekend to be considered a success. “I’m putting it at $19 million. But it may be closer to $17 million,” he predicted.

“Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted,” which was #1 for two weekends in a row, took in $20.2 million in its third weekend in theaters for a domestic total of $157.6 million. “Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa” made a total of $180 million after it opened in 2008. The first “Madagascar” film cleared $193.5 million three years before. “Madagascar 3″ is the best-reviewed of the series. “This is the rare animated property that has consistently improved on its ho-hum origins,” Variety‘s Justin Chang wrote.

“Prometheus” grossed another $10 million for a $108.5 million total. Box-office bombs “Rock of Ages” and “That’s My Boy” fell even further in their second weekends, grossing just $8 million (against a $75 million budget) and $7.9 million, respectively. “Rock of Ages” has made $28.8 million to date; “That’s My Boy,” $28.2 million.

In limited release, “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” collected $3.8 million in its debut. The Focus Features film starring Steve Carrell and Keira Knightley played in 1,625 locations, versus the 4,164 where “Brave” was available. The Los Angeles Times reported that the film was expected to open with at least $7 million.

Woody Allen’s “To Rome With Love” made $379,371 on just five screens. That’s the second-best per-screen average this year, behind “Moonrise Kingdom,” which averaged $130,749 across four theaters last month. Last year, “Midnight in Paris” became Allen’s highest-grossing picture ever and was nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. “Paris” boasted a 93 percent Tomatometer rating, however, whereas “Rome” sat at 55 percent at press time.

Next weekend’s new releases include “Family Guy” creator Seth McFarlane’s live-action directorial debut, “Ted,” which stars Mark Wahlberg; male stripper tale “Magic Mike,” with Channing Tatum; the Chris Pine/ Elizabeth Banks dramedy “People Like Us”; and Tyler Perry’s “Madea’s Witness Protection Program.”

‘Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics are decidedly split on Lorene Scafaria’s “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” and whether its cataclysmic hijinks are cute or phony.

Here is our roundup of reviews for “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.”

The Story
“At least it’s an ambitious misfire from the filmmaker, screenwriter Lorene Scafaria making a rocky directing debut. The movie ponders what people would do with their final days if the end were a fait accompli. Will anarchy reign or will humanity win out? Will Dodge (Carell) and Penny (Knightley), relative strangers living in the same apartment building, find each other, and love, before the planet and the asteroid collide? Or will they die alone? Lots of potential for a really tragic love story — from here to eternity, literally.” — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times

Steve Carell
“The sad sack in question is Dodge, a New York insurance salesman played by Steve Carell with the air of melancholy that serves, in his big-screen roles, as the functional equivalent of a ‘Don’t Call Me Michael Scott’ T-shirt. Mr. Carell has a penchant for wounded and wistful romantic roles. Here, as in ‘Dan in Real Life’ and ‘Crazy, Stupid, Love,’ he is a nebbishy guy so far out of the Darwinian sexual rat race that he becomes irresistible to women.” — A.O. Scott, The New York Times

Keira Knightley
“Penny feels equally underwritten, which leaves the awkward sight of Knightley, evidently still stuck in ‘A Dangerous Method’ mode, straining to appear girl-next-door cute while her facial expressions scream ‘mental patient.’ “— Peter Debruge, Variety

The Director
“Screenwriter Lorene Scafaria (the similarly fey ‘Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist’) is over her head in her feature directing debut, unable to establish a consistent tone in a movie that flirts with black comedy, satire, romantic comedy and touchy-feely earnestness without really delivering any of them.” — Lou Lumenick, New York Post

The Final Word
“What it doesn’t have is a way of making sense of its comic and dramatic strains, together, in the same movie. Carell and Knightley work hard to bring life and truth to each stage of a dawning friendship. By the end, though, Dodge and Penny have had one too many affirming encounters that feel engineered, not lived.” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune

Adam Levine To Star In ‘Can A Song Save Your Life?’

Adam Levine is proving to be quite the multi-tasker. In addition to an already busy schedule that includes juggling Maroon 5 frontman duties and judging “The Voice,” Levine is reportedly set to make his big-screen debut in the music-themed, possibly romantic drama “Can a Song Save Your Life?”

According to Deadline, Levine will star alongside Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo and Hailee Steinfeld. The film reportedly revolves around an aspiring singer (Knightley) who moves to New York with her boyfriend and fellow aspiring musician (Levine) so they can both pursue their music careers. Levine’s character breaks up with Knightley soon after their arrival to pursue a solo recording contract, leaving Knightley on her own to be discovered by a “down-on-his-luck” record producer (Ruffalo) while singing at a local bar.

The film will be directed by John Carney (“Once”) and executive-produced by Judd Apatow.

The role will be Levine’s first in film, in addition to having already picked up a recurring role on FX’s soapy and creepy noir “American Horror Story.” Levine will play one-half of a couple known as “the Lovers,” but that’s about all we know.

“It is the truth,” Levine confirmed to E! News recently about the “Horror” gig. “I mean, it’s pretty much happening. I think it’s happening. I don’t know how much I can divulge, because [series co-creator] Ryan [Murphy] is very under wraps. It’s going to be fun. And I told [Murphy] I really didn’t know what I was doing, but he didn’t seem to really care,” Levine continued. “So I’m just going to go and try to [do] acting. I think I’m going to be kind of playing myself, so hopefully it will be easy.”

No word yet on a production start date for “Can a Song Save Your Life?” or the second season of “Horror Story.” Levine is currently on tour with Maroon 5 and will return to his judging duties on “The Voice” this fall.

“We thought about closing up shop, but then we realized: this is really our family, you know?” the Friendsy’s host, played by “Cloverfield” actor T.J. Miller, reasons when asked why the not-so-family-friendly restaurant is still in business with just days to go before armageddon strikes. “In fact, the tragedy has brought us closer. Almost too close… but that’s impossible!”

The best part about Friendsy’s? According to a waitress named Katie (played by “Community” favorite Gillian Jacobs), literally “everything is awesome,” including the chef’s “very creative” specials. Find out what’s on the menu in our exclusive clip.
