Jay-Z Suits Up For ‘Gatsby’ Premiere As ’100$ Bill’ Debuts

Jay Z Suits Up For Gatsby Premiere As 100$ Bill Debuts

By Maurice Bobb

If you “understand the intelligence that Jay-Z has,” you already knew that the hip-hop cash king wouldn’t stop his upwardly mobile quest for black excellence at hanging out with Warren Buffet and President Barack Obama. The Roc Nation Sports agent was bound to go Hollywood and he’s done just that with his latest move: scoring one of the year’s most lavish set pieces to date, Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby.”

Hov showed up dapper in a charcoal grey bespoke suit to the film’s New York premiere Wednesday (May 1) and rubbed elbows with Hollywood’s elite, including Leonardo DiCaprio, who, according to him, introduced the Watch the Throne MC to the movie’s director.

In addition to scoring the movie that centers around a Midwestern war veteran that finds himself drawn to the past and lifestyle of his millionaire neighbor, Jay also served as executive producer to the soundtrack, which, of course, features a new song by the man himself, “100$ Bill.” The song was previously released as a 90-second snippet last month, but can be heard in its entirety today as part of NPR’s First Listen.

On the chopped and screwed track, Jigga channels his wife Beyonce’s hometown flow, spitting, “I write like Mark Twain, Jay Gatsby I park thangs/ Yellow cars, yellow gold, like Slick Rick, still tip/ On four-fours, fo-fos at the four-O, four-O,” before peppering the beat with calculated opulence with lines like, “Carter, new Kennedy, no ordinary Joe, you will remember me/no prohibition for my coalition, Colin Powell, general admission.”

And lest you forget that Marcy Projects’ favorite son knows how to get grimy with it, he serves up bars like this: “You all welcome, new Malcolm, of the talcum, by any means, AK looking out the window screen, uh/Let’s get it on new Marvin, you wanna become my hundredth problem, semi-automatic or revolve him, semi-automatic I’ll solve ‘em.”

In addition to Jay, the project will also feature songs by will.i.am, Lana Del Rey, Fergie, Q-Tip, Andre 3000 and the Queen of the BeyHive.

“It’s not the typical soundtrack, or a standalone piece,” Jay says of the soundtrack. “The songs are pretty much in the film, so it goes hand in hand with each other. It had to fit pretty snug, it wasn’t an afterthought.”

Lana Del Rey’s ‘Young And Beautiful’ From ‘Great Gatsby’ Soundtrack Online

Lana Del Reys Young And Beautiful From Great Gatsby Soundtrack Online

Apart from the stunning visuals presented in the previews for Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” adaptation, viewers have fawned over the film’s stacked soundtrack, which includes original tracks from the likes of Beyonce, Jay-Z, and Florence Welch.

The song from controversial vocalist Lana Del Rey, “Young and Beautiful,” however, was featured prominently in the third trailer and instantly struck a chord with people looking forward to the film.

A series of snippets, previews, and teasers of the movie’s entire soundtrack have given us a little more for each of the songs, including “Young and Beautiful,” but now the full song is available to stream online (via Vulture).

Listen to the song after the jump!

“Young and Beautiful” falls very much in-line with what Lana Del Rey‘s fans have come to expect from the 26-year-old singer. Soft and dreary vocals play over an epic backing, making it easy to see how this song would fit within the world of the decadent 1920s.

Longer previews for two of the soundtrack’s other most anticipated songs, Beyonce and Andre 3000′s take on Amy Winehouse’s “Back to Black” and Jay-Z’s “100$ Bill,” also appeared online over the weekend, and you can listen to those with the links from above.

Luhrmann is responsible for one of the most popular movie soundtracks in recent memory with “Moulin Rouge,” so expectations are understandably high for his next big musical effort. The entire soundtrack for “The Great Gatsby” hits store shelves on May 7.

“The Great Gatsby” opens in theaters on May 10.

Jay-Z, Beyonce, Andre 3000 Snippets From ‘Great Gatsby’ Soundtrack Leak

By Maurice Bobb

Baz Luhrmann’s film “The Great Gatsby” may have Leonardo Dicaprio as its leading man, but it’s Jay-Z, the executive producer of the film’s soundtrack who is making the most noise, figuratively and literally. After dropping his first solo song in nearly a year last week with “Open Letter,” Hov is back with another, “100$ Bill,” one of the 14 songs from the soundtrack, which is due out on May 7.

Fans will have to wait a bit for the full version of the track, but a 90-second snippet hit the Internet Monday (April 22), and from the chopped and screwed sound of it, the Roc Nation Sports agent, who also helped to score the movie, is back to doing what he does best: boasting and toasting to his enormous success.

The “No Church in the Wild” MC keeps up the opulent heme so expertly displayed on his joint LP with Kanye West, Watch the Throne, on this one, rhyming that he’s “Carter, new Kennedy, no ordinary Joe, you will remember me/no prohibition for my coalition, Colin Powell, general admission,” before adding another politically-charged rant, “dollars fall on the skin, some might call it sin, politicians all move for the money, what the hell we callin’ them?”

Jigga’s not just channeling Kennedy, though. He’s also unabashed like Malcolm and smooth like Marvin, spitting, “You all welcome, new Malcolm, of the talcum, by any means, AK looking out the window screen, uh/Let’s get it on new Marvin, you wanna become my hundredth problem, semi-automatic or revolve him, semi-automatic I’ll solve ‘em.”

Keeping it in the family, Beyonce also adds to the excitement with a snippet of her collaboration with Andre 3000, “Back to Black,” which is a cover of Amy Winehouse’s song of the same title. Mr. Three Stacks sings this time around, crooning, “I know a hundred times I go back to her,” before the Queen of the BeyHive adds her sultry vocals, however briefly, before the teaser ends.

In addition to Jay, Bey and Andre 3000, the project will also feature songs by will.i.am, Lana Del Rey, Fergie and Q-Tip.

‘The Great Gatsby’ Trailer, Now Featuring Fergie

The latest step of the “Great Gatsby” marketing campaign seems to be to release trailers that feature the various awesome songs on the movie’s soundtrack, and we’re totally okay with that. We already got one featuring Beyonce and Florence + the Machine, and now a new teaser has been released featuring Fergie.

The trailer comes courtesy of NewNowNext, which awarded Fergie the Always Next Forever Now award at its recent awards show. The hip beat of the song featured here goes along with director Baz Luhrmann‘s frenetic filmmaking style, and we love the irony in the line “a little party never killed nobody.”

In fact, the track itself is called “A Little Party Never Killed Nobody (All We Got),” and it features Fergie, Q Tip and GoonRock. Fergie’s Black Eyed Peas cohort will.i.am also has a song on the soundtrack (“Bang Bang”), as do Lana Del Rey, Jay-Z, Jack White and Gotye.

“The Great Gatsby” stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Isa Fisher, Joel Edgerton and Jason Clarke. It’s due in theaters on May 10.

On-screen,  last year A$AP heated things up with Lana Del Rey for her “National Anthem” music video in which they played the President and First Lady. Rocky recently shared that he has a musical crush on Brit singer and MTV Artist to Watch in 2013 Jessie Ware. “I knew about her since last summer … I’m going to work with her. I want to bad. I don’t care about her being a star, I just think she has a beautiful voice and a lot of talent,” A$AP said. “I haven’t got the chance or honor to meet her yet — I just love her art.”
