Lauryn Hill Inks Deal With Sony, May Avoid Jail Time

Lauryn Hill Inks Deal With Sony, May Avoid Jail Time

By Georgette Pierre

Lauryn Hill has lived an elusive lifestyle until recent tax woes got the best of her. Last year, Hill pleaded guilty to not paying federal taxes on $1.8 million earned between 2005-2007, possibly facing up to three years in jail, but according to Billboard, the former Fugees star may have found a way to avoid jail time.

During her court hearing in New Jersey on Monday (April 22), it was revealed that Hill reportedly signed a $1 million deal with Sony Music to include recording five new songs in addition to receiving more money for an album. As of now, no songs have been written or recorded yet. The judge also postponed sentencing, giving her until May 6 to pay off her debt, which is now over $500,000, after she made a payment of $50,000 late last year.

Lauryn Hill isn’t the only artist that recently pleaded guilty to tax evasion. New York rapper, Fat Joe, is under heat for not paying taxes on $3 million earned between 2007 and 2008. He faces up to two years in prison on top of numerous fines and penalties.

Young Sav Named VP Of Rick Ross’ MMG Label

Young Sav Named VP Of Rick Ross MMG Label

By Maurice Bobb

Rick Ross just has a knack for staying ahead of the game. In his latest move, Rozay has named Kendell “Young Sav” Freeman (of “Best of Both Offices”) the new Vice President of Maybach Music Group.

“Feels great calling one of the hardest workers and few people I consider a close friend the new VP of MMG,” the God Forgives, I Don’t MC said of Freeman’s appointment Thursday (April 18), which is effective immediately.

The former Def Jam Mixshow Manager won’t be taking his talents to South Beach, though. He’ll remain in New York to oversee all areas of MMG with a specific focus on growing the success of existing signings and developing new talent. Additionally, Freeman will continue his relationship with his former employer to collaborate on Ross’ future solo projects.

“I am extremely excited to embark on this new path in my career,” Freeman said. “I appreciate Ross for noticing my grind, work ethic and giving me a major opportunity to not only be a part of this label, but also help execute his vision.”

Prior to joining MMG, Freeman thrived for almost a decade on the label that Russell Simmons built. During his time there, he was instrumental in the success of projects from hip-hop heavyweights such as Big Sean, 2 Chainz, Fabolous, Trinidad Jame$, Jadakiss, Juelz Santana, Jay-Z and, of course, his new Bawse.

“Kendell a.k.a Young Sav’s talent and knowledge helped redefine the lifestyle approach to marketing and promoting some of the biggest names in hip-hop,” said Shawn “Pecas” Costner, SVP Def Jam Records “he’s one of a kind.” Earlier in his career, Freeman played a pivotal role at TVT Records in breaking music for the label’s urban acts, which included the Ying Yang Twins, Pitbull and Lil Jon & Eastside Boyz.

“It’s going to be a privilege to work with the brand and assist in taking it to the next tier,” Freeman said. “All of the artists on the roster are amazing. I’m ready to get to work.”

Coachella Weekend 1 Performances: Wu Tang, 2 Chainz, R. Kelly Joins Phoenix

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy

Not even a sandstorm could hold back the Wu-Tang Clan this weekend at Coachella where legendary New York collective performed their longtime fan favorites like “C.R.E.A.M.” and “Protect Ya Neck.”

“No disrespect to none of y’all,” Raekwon reportedly told the audience during the set on Sunday night, “but we came to steal this sh–tonight.”

R. Kelly was a surprise performer, jumping into French band Phoenix’s set. The crowed definitely shocked but laughed it up when R. Kelly started crooning. The strange pairing combined Kellz’s “Ignition” (Remix) to Phoenix’s super hit “1901.”

Other rappers at the Indio, California festival included 2 Chainz, Pusha T, Action Bronson and Danny Brown. 2 Chainz got the crowd jumping with songs from his 2012 debut, Based on a T.R.U. Story, like “No Lie,” “Birthday Song” and “I’m Different.” He also threw in guest vocals from his features on “Mercy,” “Beez in the Trap,” “All Gold Everything,” “Bands a Make Her Dance” and “R.I.P.” “Mercy” also made its way onto Pusha T’s set along with “So Appalled” and “Runaway.” King Push threw in his brand new song “Numbers On the Boards” too.

Didn’t catch it the first time? Coachella resumes with the second part of the festival next weekend (April 19-22) and will feature many of the same acts.

Big Sean Confirms Relationship With ‘Glee’s’ Naya Rivera

Big Sean Confirms Relationship With Glees Naya Rivera

By Henna Kathiya

After creating a buzz at the premiere of “42″ last week, Big Sean has confirmed that he is dating “Glee” actress Naya Rivera.

Sean stopped by WKYS’ Urban Informer (via TheYBF) where he spoke about matters of the heart. He opened up about his ex-girlfriend from high school and also talked about his new relationship that had people buzzing at the premiere of the Jackie Robinson biopic.

“Naya, I been dating her for a little while, and I guess that event (the “42″ premiere) was one of the first big events that came up while I was dating her,” the G.O.O.D music rapper said. “We were like, ‘Yo let’s go to it’ because we both wanted to go. I’m kinda a private person and she’s a private person,”

He also took a trip down memory lane and talked about his past girlfriend. “I had a girlfriend too before that who I was with since I was like…. I always been in a relationship since I was 18 or 19 when I got with her,” he said. “Things didn’t work out and not because of this music stuff. But sometimes when you’re with somebody and you’re 18 and you grow up…and it’s long distance because she lived in New York and I lived in L.A…..you grow apart as people. It’s nothing more and nothing less.”

“It’s not like I’ve changed. It’s not like that at all. We just really had our differences and it just clearly didn’t work out,” he added. “It may work out later, it may come back too. Who knows. But as far as Naya, it’s something new. Naya’s really cool. Our relationship is cool. She’s tight,” he said.

He also discussed his plans on working with Common and Eminem in the near future during the interview.

LA Hip-Hop Station KDAY Changes Format After Being Sold

By Tamara Palmer

It’s the end of an era in Southern California as hip-hop radio station KDAY has been reportedly sold for $19.5 million to RBC Communications, which will flip the format to a Chinese language station.

KDAY was once a pioneering station on the AM dial that introduced the greater Los Angeles area to emerging hip-hop sounds from both New York and their own stomping grounds in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Dr. Dre, to just name one luminary, got an early kickstart when his World Class Wrecking Cru and later N.W.A. were heavily featured on KDAY. Hip-hop was blasted around the clock on the station until it ceased in 1991.

The station was later resurrected for a new generation when it took over the frequency at 93.5 FM in 2004. KDAY began broadcasting old and new rap hits, with a special emphasis on the West Coast sound, on and off for the next three years. In 2008, after a few brief switches in format, KDAY 93.5 FM solidified its commitment to hip-hop.

With the sale of KDAY, Magic Broadcasting has now taken itself out of the radio business in California, just as it has over the past three years with the sales of five other stations that were all located in Alabama. Radio Insight reports that Magic first tried to sell KDAY to a company called SoCal935 LLC for $35 million in 2010, but the sale was never completed.

In recent years, KDAY had much success producing the sold-out live events Fresh Fresh and Krush Groove, both featuring lineups heavy on West Coast talent and history. As RapFix spoke with performers at these shows, it was clear that KDAY held a special place in all of their hearts. “They play some of the other stuff that other stations play, but you hear these rare gems that no other station that I know of in the country is playing in hip-hop,” said Too $hort, backstage after headlining “Krush Groove” two years ago.

“If you’re not from LA, you wouldn’t know what KDAY means to us,” explained Mack 10 of the station’s importance to keeping the continuum of the culture alive when we talked to him after the Fresh Fest show later that year. “They’ve repped the West harder than any station in the world!”

Meanwhile, his Westside Connection Ice Cube recognized the station’s influence on the whole his career when he blessed the station with a closing performance at last year’s show, which was also the 20th anniversary of the LA Riots. He threw up praise to KDAY just as he got 6000 people to throw up dubs.

KDAY has currently sold out the two days of what appears to be the final Krush Groove concerts at the 6000-capacity Gibson Amphitheater in LA on April 19-20. The bill includes Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, DJ Quik, Too $hort, Dogg Pound, Warren G, Mack 10, Glasses Malone, and Compton’s Most Wanted. The absence of one of hip-hop’s strongest champions on Los Angeles airwaves, and the amazing live events that have gone with it, will surely be felt.
