‘Iron Man 3′ Co-Writer Set To Script ‘Mission: Impossible 5′

After scripting the biggest hit of 2013, “Iron Man 3,” it’s no surprise that screenwriter Drew Pearce has moved on to a similarly big project. It’s being reported that Pearce has signed on to pen the screenplay for the upcoming “Mission: Impossible” sequel “Mi5.”

The Hollywood Reporter has the news, confirming that Paramount Pictures has hired Pearce to write the script. Tom Cruise is expected to both produce and star in the film once he’s done with his next feature, “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”

By the time Cruise is done with Guy Ritchie’s “U.N.C.L.E.,” “Mi5″ should be ready for a fall filming start date. Story details of the next “Mission: Impossible” movie are being kept a secret, and it’s unclear of Jeremy Renner will be reprising his role as William Brandt. Christopher McQuarrie is still in discussions to the direct the film, though he hasn’t been locked down yet.

“We’ve been talking about it, yes,” McQuarrie recently told MTV News. “We’re figuring it out right now. I’m looking at pictures from all over the world and just deciding what invites action.”

In addition to “Mission: Impossible 5,” Pearce is also said to be working on an original spec script that will be his directorial debut. He also helped develop “Pacific Rim” and is said to be attached to write “Sherlock Holmes 3.”

Tom Cruise Signs Up For ‘Mission: Inevitable’ AKA ‘Mission: Impossible 5′

Tom Cruise Signs Up For Mission: Inevitable AKA Mission: Impossible 5

Not that this should come to as a surprise to anyone, but Tom Cruise wants to keep making movies. And his best bet right now is a little franchise enjoying a strong second wind called “Mission: Impossible.” Since the fourth movie in the series, “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” took over the world to the tune of $700 million, a fifth movie was inevitable. Now, according to Deadline, we can change “inevitable” to “happening.”

Cruise has officially signed deals with Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions to star in and produce a fifth “Mission: Impossible” movie. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot will once again develop the movie with Cruise and a yet-to-be-named director.

Around the time “Jack Reacher” was about to hit theaters last year, rumors began to circulate the director job belonged to Christopher McQuarrie if he chose to accept the mission. There hasn’t been any update on that front, but Deadline is still hearing his name attached and expects an answer in the next few weeks.

Cruise has found moderate success outside of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise in recent years, but nothing has come close to his recent string of hits as Ethan Hunt. His last film “Oblivion” was far from a smash hit in the states, but it’s world-wide total sits at a little over $220 million.

Before that, “Jack Reacher” did roughly the same amount of business, taking in $80 million in the U.S. and $136 million elsewhere.

There is no release tentative release date yet, but stay tuned in the coming weeks for further updates.

‘Paranormal Activity 5′ Gets A Halloween 2013 Release Date

8fde6 Paranormal Activity 4 Paranormal Activity 5 Gets A Halloween 2013 Release Date

The world is going to continue to experience some paranormal activity in 2013.

Paramount Pictures has announced the release date for “Paranormal Activity 5,” which will hit theaters on October 25, 2013. No word yet on which actors will return for the film or who will direct it, but Paramount was quick to announce the film around the time “Paranormal Activity 4″ hit theaters.

That film has gone on to gross $53.5 million in the United States so far, which seems to have been enough to get Paramount to want another incarnation of the low-budget horror series. So far none of the other movies have done as well as “Paranormal Activity,” which made $107 million in the US during its entire run.

There’s no guarantee that directing duo Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman will return for “Paranormal Activity 5″ after helming numbers “3″ and “4,” but we hope they do. If they come back, we put together a little wish list of changes that we hope they make to the upcoming fifth “Paranormal Activity” installment: Namely, bring back the fan cam, go bigger with the scares and make sure to expand on the mythology. That’s not too much to ask, right?

It’s worth noting that a Latino spinoff of the “Paranormal Activity” franchise had been reported at the same time “Paranormal Activity 5″ was, though we haven’t heard much about it since. That film is supposed to be directed by “Paranormal Activity” sequels scribe Christopher Landon, and due out in spring 2013.

‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ Scores 9-Minute IMAX Preview

4e2a3 05 enterprise crew Star Trek Into Darkness Scores 9 Minute IMAX Preview

It’s not even Thanksgiving yet, but we already have some welcome early holiday cheer to celebrate thanks to an unexpected announcement from Paramount: a special preview of footage from “Star Trek Into Darkness” will be screened at select theaters on December 14.

That’s right, in less than one month we’re finally going to get a look at more than three frames of J.J. Abrams’ highly-anticipated sequel, thanks to a nine-minute preview to be held at 500 digital IMAX theaters all over the country.

If this sounds slightly familiar, at around the same time last year Christopher Nolan unveiled an action-packed six minute prologue of “The Dark Knight Rises,” an event that served to further fire-up the fan base. Not that “Rises” and “Trek” should or need to be compared here, but this move by Paramount and Abrams is a smart one. Plus Abrams is a big fan of IMAX and “jumped” at the chance to shoot portions of the film in the format.

“All expectations were exceeded—the action and resolution is insane at this scale,” Abrams said in June when it was announced “Into Darkness” would shoot certain sequences in IMAX. “We cannot wait for audiences to see the crew of the Enterprise in a way they never have before.”

A handful of people have already seen the Enterprise on the extra big screen, by the way. IMAX Chairman and President Greg Foster promises us an “incredible” nine-minute experience.

“Our longtime partners J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park – the footage is absolutely incredible,” Foster said in a statement. “Their use of the IMAX Camera and canvas is sure to impress current and future Star Trek fans alike, and we’re thrilled to once again work with our friends at Paramount Pictures to offer this extended ‘first look’ at this highly anticipated summer blockbuster.”

Jack Reacher’ Director Top Choice For ‘Mission: Impossible 5′

Jack Reacher Director Top Choice For Mission: Impossible 5

Tom Cruise is likely reuniting with a familiar face for the latest “Mission: Impossible” movie: Christopher McQuarrie.

According to new reports, McQuarrie is likely to take on the upcoming “Mission: Impossible 5,” but Paramount Pictures is waiting to hire writers for the film before making it official. Deadline has the news, and also comments that this project is in its “early stages.”

It sounds like things went the way Paramount and Cruise wanted with the upcoming “Jack Reacher.” McQuarrie also wrote and directed that action film, which is due out on December 21.

However, McQuarrie has been more involved in Cruise’s career than that. He wrote the Cruise-starring 2008 historical epic “Valkyrie” and also had an uncredited hand in “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.” After “Jack Reacher,” McQuarrie also has written the script for “All You Need Is Kill” and “Top Gun 2,” though the status of the latter project is currently up in the air.

We’ll be interested to see what Paramount, Cruise and McQuarrie see when “Jack Reacher” comes out next month. Hopefully it will be a great first taste of what we can expect from a McQuarrie-directed action film. And who knows, maybe Paramount will end up having him pen “M:I-5″ if the writing is good enough.

“Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol” was the live action debut of director Brad Bird. Released in 2011, it went on to be a hit with critics and audiences, earning a 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes and making $694.7 million worldwide.

Tom Cruise Working On Concepts For ‘Mission: Impossible 5′

No mission is impossible for secret agent Ethan Hunt, nor it seems for his alter ego Tom Cruise, who famously scaled the world’s largest building, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, for the most recent “Mission Impossible” installment, “Ghost Protocol.” But can the actor pull off perhaps an even grander feat: keeping his espionage series fresh while continuing to push the action-movie envelope? Audiences will be able to judge for themselves, as Cruise said he’ll continue to make “Mission: Impossible” films as long as audiences clamor to see them.

“I started ‘Mission: Impossible’ hoping I could make many of them. It’s a character that I can grow with,” Cruise told Total Film magazine. “At that time it was the most expensive film in the history of Paramount Pictures, and the first film I was producing.”

It’s an investment that’s paid off for the studio: the four “Mission: Impossible” films have grossed approximately $740 million to date, domestically. Audiences clearly continue to be enthralled by the inner-workings of the IMF.

“It’s been pretty exciting. I’ll make a bunch of those,” Cruise continued. “I’ll make as many as people want to see…because they’re very challenging, and so much fun to make.”

And in his role as star and producer, Cruise never stops thinking about where to take the franchise next, even while globe-trotting to film and promote other projects, like the upcoming “Jack Reacher.”

“We’re already working on different images. Talking conceptually,” he said of “Mission: Impossible 5.” “I love travelling around promoting different movies because I’m always looking at different places, and I always walk around to see the city. I look at architecture, subways… coming up with different sequences.”

No release date has been set for “Mission: Impossible 5.”

Adam Sandler To Go West With ‘Ridiculous 6′

2afa0 Jack and Jill adam sandler Adam Sandler To Go West With Ridiculous 6

Adam Sandler is going to be getting his spoof on in his next movie.

Deadline is reporting that Sandler is working on a comedy western for Paramount Pictures called “Ridiculous 6.” Though the plot hasn’t been announced, we can guess the direction the film is headed in based on its title. It might not be quite as catchy, but this film seems to be a riff off “The Magnificent Seven.” It will start shooting in April 2013.

That film, of course, is a remake of the Akira Kurosawa movie “Seven Samurai.” To speak generally, both projects follow a group of seven warriors (samurai in “Seven Samurai,” gunmen in “Magnificent Seven“) who are hired by a group of villagers to protect them from invading bandits. It’s an iconic tale, but it’s easy to see how Sandler could spin it into a comedy. At least it’s a bit different than what he’s done recently, since he hasn’t played a character much different than his Adam Sandler persona since 2008′s “You Don’t Mess with the Zohan.”

Next year, Sandler is starring in “Grown Ups 2,” the sequel to his 2010 film “Grown Ups.” He’s at the point in his career where he can gather together many of his comedian friends to star in movies together like he did in the “Grown Ups” movies. Though “Ridiculous 6″ is, for lack of a better word, a ridiculous title, it could be fun to see a “Grown Ups“-style cast come together for the project. We’d love to see Kevin James and Rob Schneider in a pair of chaps.

‘Paranormal Activity 4′ Overtakes ‘Taken’ At Box Office

“Paranormal Activity 4″ possessed the box-office over the weekend while Tyler Perry‘s decidedly un-”Madea” outing, “Alex Cross,” fizzled.

The $30.2 million opening posted by the latest “Paranormal Activity” flick was roughly $10 to $20 million lower than industry analysts expected, but still enough to put the found-footage franchise back at #1. By comparison, last year’s “Paranormal Activity 3″ opened with $52.6 million, but the films were extremely inexpensive for Paramount Pictures to produce. (“Paranormal Activity 4″ was made for about $6 million.)

The prequel of sorts “Alex Cross,” which saw Perry taking over a role last played onscreen by Morgan Freeman in “Kiss the Girls” and “Along Came a Spider,” failed to ignite, grossing just $11.7 million to land at #5. “Alex Cross” carried a reported production budget of $23 million. Stepping outside of his commercial comfort zone, Perry did not write, direct or produce the action thriller, whose title character was created by novelist James Patterson.

The opening for “Alex Cross” was the worst for any movie starring Perry. Both of Freeman’s Alex Cross movies opened with bigger numbers. Critics were not kind to the movie, either: At press time, it had a lowly 13 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

While the numbers for “Paranormal Activity 4″ and “Alex Cross” were certainly disappointments, strong holds from Ben Affleck‘s critically acclaimed “Argo” and Adam Sandler’s “Hotel Transylvania” were enough to help the theaters post bigger overall numbers compared to the same period last year. “Argo” was $2 with $16.6 million for a two week total of $43.1 million. The animated “Hotel Transylvania” was #3 with $13.5 million for a $119 million total.

“Taken 2″ became the second movie of the fall season to cross the $100 million mark, landing at #4 with $13.4 million toward a $105.9 million total.

‘Star Trek 2′ Confirmed For IMAX 3-D Release

It’s the day of IMAX news announcements, it seems! Following news that “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” would enjoy an IMAX release and that “Batman Begins” would be re-released in the format alongside its “Dark Knight” sequels later this summer comes yet another announcement of a hotly awaited project boldly going where many other recent films have gone before.

J.J. Abrams’ still untitled “Star Trek” sequel joins those aforementioned movies in the IMAX club, as announced Wednesday (June 13) in a joint press release from IMAX Corporation and Paramount Pictures. Captain Kirk, Spock and the rest of the U.S.S. Enterprise crew will debut in IMAX 3-D on May 17, 2013, featuring a number of action sequences that were shot from the ground up with IMAX cameras.

“We were so thrilled with the creative results of shooting IMAX for ‘Mission: Impossible’ that we jumped at the chance to use the format for ‘Star Trek,’ ” Abrams said of the news in the statement. “All expectations were exceeded — the action and resolution is insane at this scale. We cannot wait for audiences to see the crew of the Enterprise in a way they never have before.”

Paramount Pictures‘ Vice Chairman Rob Moore added: “J.J. and the filmmaking team behind the ‘Star Trek‘ franchise are once again working to give audiences one of the best film going experiences available today. Following the great success of the first film in the newly revived franchise, the sequel to ‘Star Trek‘ will no doubt be among the top choices for moviegoers next summer.”

Little is known about the plot and premise behind Abrams’ second “Trek” flick, save for the fact that it involves the return of the heroes fans remember from the first film: Chris Pine as Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Bones and Zoe Saldana as Uhura, among others. Also joining the fray this time around are franchise newcomers Alice Eve and Peter Weller, both of them well-known quantities in the sci-fi space via “Men in Black” and “RoboCop” respectively. That’s not even mentioning Benedict Cumberbatch, the “Sherlock” star who makes his “Star Trek” debut here as a still unidentified villain.

“It’s great fun, great, great fun,” was all Cumberbatch would tell MTV News about the sequel when we spoke with him in February. “It’s a great thing to come into something that everybody’s familiar with and knows each other very well. So it’s [in] a weird way a very easy thing to get up to speed with, because everybody is so welcoming and gets along with one another.”
