Russell Brand Charms In Exclusive ‘Rock Of Ages’ Video

Rock of Ages” hits Blu-ray and DVD today and, in honor of the rock musical’s big debut on home video, we’ve got an exclusive new video that celebrates the release.

The clip focuses on star and MTV Movie Awards host Russell Brand. Brand introduces us to his character Lonny in the never-before-seen clip and talks about how he responded to the rock music in the film.

“My character Lonny in the film ‘Rock of Ages’ is the representative, I think, of the audience, and the honest-to-God sincere music lover,” Brand explained in the video.

With all his energy and exuberance, Brand has earned plenty of respect from his fellow actors Paul Giamatti and Alec Baldwin. Both gushed about their costar in interviews shown in this clip, with Baldwin in particular being impressed by his costar.

“Nothing could prepare me — I mean, nothing in the world could have prepared me — for what an incredibly clever, brilliant, funny, alive person [Brand is]. He was the most fun to work with, among the best experiences I’ve ever had working with someone in terms of being inventive and loose,” Baldwin said.

Spliced in between the interviews are a couple clips from “Rock of Ages” featuring Brand, but we’re enraptured just hearing him talk about “that gorgeous Diego [Boneta] lad” and “that beautiful Julianne [Hough] bird.”

“Rock of Ages” was directed by Adam Shankman and also stars Tom Cruise, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Mary J. Blige.

Robert Pattinson’s ‘Cosmopolis’ Explained In Ten Seconds

If you’ve been trapped in a car crawling through midtown Manhattan traffic without Internet access all week, then perhaps you don’t know that we’re celebrating the upcoming release of “Cosmopolis” with MTV First: Robert Pattinson this Thursday (August 16). Pattinson will join us live on MTV at 7:49 p.m. EST to unveil a brand new clip from the David Cronenberg-directed thriller, and he’ll stay with us afterwards on MTV.com for a 30-minute QA.

Among the many reasons to tune into this week’s interview is the opportunity to finally understand what “Cosmopolis” is really, truly all about. Sure, Rob’s in it, as are a bunch of other well-known faces including Jay Baruchel and Paul Giamatti. Beyond that, though, can anyone actually explain the plot behind the complex, mind-bending drama? Perhaps — but can they do it in ten seconds or less?

We put that question to the test ahead of MTV First: Robert Pattinson, asking his co-stars to summarize “Cosmopolis” in less than ten seconds when we caught up with them at the film’s New York premiere earlier this week.

Giamatti put forth an admirable effort with his explanation: “An ultra-billionaire entrepreneur needs a haircut across town, gets caught in traffic on his way across town, and he then encounters many people from his life and is challenged existentially by them. Eventually, [spoiler], and then confronting himself.” But with his censored-for-spoilers answer ending three seconds past the buzzer, Giamatti came close to completing our challenge — but no cigar.

How did Giamatti’s co-stars Sarah Gadon and Emily Hampshire fare with our challenge? How about director David Cronenberg himself? Watch the video above to see their explanations of “Cosmopolis” in ten seconds or less. As for Pattinson’s answer, you’ll just have to tune into our MTV First on Thursday to find out!

‘Cosmopolis’ Stars Summarize The Plot In 10 Seconds Or Less

Cosmopolis” is not an easy film to describe. You can’t really talk that much about the plot, because it’s not really about the story. So how will the stars of the film describe “Cosmopolis” in 10 seconds or less?

[ video unavailable on this device ]

Paul Giamatti pretty much rocked the challenge. Sarah Gadon took the easy way out going all thematic on us. David Cronenberg makes the movie sound much simpler than it actually is, but probably does the best of all of them.

You can hear from the leading man, Robert Pattinson, this Thursday during “MTV First.” Pattinson will be on MTV starting at 7:49 p.m. ET to debut a never-before-seen clip from “Cosmopolis.” Immediately afterward, he’ll sit down with MTV News’ Josh Horowitz for a 30-minute interview, where he’ll answer some of your questions. All you’ll have to do is tweet your questions to @MTVNews and using the hash-tag #AskRob.

Robert Pattinson Not ‘Trying To Sell My Personal Life’

When Robert Pattinson stopped by “Good Morning America” to promote “Cosmopolis” on Wednesday, host George Stephanopoulos wanted to get “the elephant in the room out of the way” and asked the star in general terms how he is doing in his “personal life” in the wake of Kristen Stewart‘s “indiscretion.”

“I mean you know they seem pretty excited about whatever. I’d like my fans to know that Cinnamon toast crunch only has 30 calories a bowl in it,” he joked, referring to the box of cereal he had been handed as a gift for appearing on the show and partly an homage to the ice cream he ate on “The Daily Show” earlier this week.

Then he elaborated a bit more on celebrity life. “It’s a different thing. You go into it to do movies,” he said. “I’ve never been interested in trying to sell my personal life and that’s really the only reason people bring it up. The reason why you go on TV is to promote movies. That’s the only way to do it.”

Pattinson went on to elaborate on celebrity life without ever addressing the elephant in the room.

“I think if you start getting used to [celebrity life], you start going crazy,” he said. “It’s nice. It’s like being on the craziest theme park ride you’ve been on. It’s totally exciting but eventually at some point you have to have a break.”

Then the conversation started to veer back into the world of David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis,” which opens in limited released this Friday. After a clip is played where co-star Paul Giamatti points out that he can score more girls than Pattinson, the British heartthrob joked, “He does. If you go to Brooklyn Heights Paul Giammati is.”

Pattinson then opened up about portraying 28-year-old business magnate Erick Packer, who watches his empire fall apart around him. “I always found this connection with the idea of finding it difficult to live in the present,” he said. “It’s funny it exasperates it being an actor. You actually have to focus on it, trying to exist in a contemporary way. I always feel like I was kind of living in the future. That’s a lot of what Eric Packer‘s problem is. He feels like he’s living in the future. He’s not really being able to totally feel. It’s funny. There’s a lot of similarities to an actor’s life.

“If you took the lives of people who controlled billions of dollars on the front page of every single paper, I think the world would be a better place,” he said of real-life folks like Packer. “If you took away publicists and things, and people spoke for themselves, then they’d have to be responsible for their words.”

Pattinson will be dishing more about the flick when he sits down with MTV News on Thursday for “MTV First: Robert Pattinson.” Fans can tune in to hear what the “Twilight” star has to say when it all goes down at 7:49 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com.

Robert Pattinson Insists He’s ‘Just A Pawn’ In ‘Cosmopolis’

It’s been a long time coming, but we are finally going to see Robert Pattinson tackle his most adult and challenging role yet in David Cronenberg’s “Cosmopolis.”

Based on Don DeLillo’s novel of the same name, the action-packed thriller and #1 most-anticipated movie in our MTV Movie Brawl follows a day in the life of young billionaire financier Eric Packer (Pattinson) in the not-too-distant future as he’s chauffeured through Manhattan on his way to get a haircut and his world is falling apart around him.

When MTV News caught up with Pattinson at the film’s New York premiere Monday (August 13), we asked how he felt about the pressure of carrying the film in the lead role.

“It’s on David!” Pattinson said, putting all the credit (and blame) with his director. “I keep trying to say, ‘It’s his movie, it’s not my movie. I’m just a pawn in it!’ It was kind of scary at the beginning. It was also good that no one had too big a part so I couldn’t be too confident,” he joked, trying to undersell his performance and significant amount of screen time. “But I had many chances to redeem myself throughout the movie.”

Speaking to expected comparisons between his work in the very adult and heady “Cosmopolis” versus his career-igniting role in the “Twilight” franchise, Pattinson said he hopes his latest movie helps inspire artistic discussions about both films.

“I think the sort of cultural relevance of being in ‘Twilight’ and coming through that, I was always afraid of it before, like being in an overwhelming movie, but I think it makes it more interesting and sort of creates a lens to look at it,” he said. “Maybe it will be cool.”

“Cosmopolis” also stars Juliette Binoche, Sarah Gadon, Mathieu Amalric, Jay Baruchel, Kevin Durand, K’Naan, Emily Hampshire, Samantha Morton and Paul Giamatti and opens everywhere Friday.

Don’t forget to tune in to MTV First: Robert Pattinson on MTV and MTV.com at 7:49 p.m. ET. on Thursday, August 16, to hear everything Pattinson has to say about making the film and see an exclusive “Cosmopolis” clip!

Robert Pattinson Shows His Dark Side In Latest ‘Cosmopolis’ Trailer

Things aren’t looking too bright for Robert Pattinson in the latest “Cosmopolis” trailer, but he doesn’t seem to mind all that much.

With his fortune bleeding “by the ton,” and his wife (played by Sarah Gadon) suspicious of what exactly he does for a living, Pattinson embarks on a trippy odyssey around a dystopian Manhattan, where civilization is crumbling around him. In the latest trailer from the David Cronenberg-directed flick, Pattinson’s slick Eric Packer admits that “my personal fortune is in ruins, and there’s been an incredible threat on my life. Makes me feel free in a way I’ve never known.”

His wife then wonders, “Free to do what?” Well, the trailer teases that perhaps Pattinson just wants the freedom to be bad. His life quickly devolves into the seedy and gritty, as he encounters corruption and women of loose morals, becoming what his wife calls “a dangerous person.”

The film is set for release on August 17 and is based on the novel by Don DeLillo. Set in the not-so-far-off future in the Big Apple, it follows Packer as everything around him begins to fall apart on his way to get a haircut.

Fans have gotten the chance to see this edgier side of Pattinson in some previous teasers that dropped earlier this spring (one in April and a previous one in March.) But, this latest trailer, released on Thursday, gives an even deeper look at the trouble brewing for Pattinson and his co-stars Jay Baruchel, Juliette Binoche and Paul Giamatti.

And, if fans are wondering if Pattinson can pull off the darker role, he already has gotten a four-star review from Kristen Stewart, who saw the film when it premiered at Cannes.

“He’s so good in it!” Stewart told MTV News. “He’s really, really [good]. I don’t even know how he [did it]. I couldn’t even understand it. It’s so good, it’s so cool, I’m so proud of him. Thank God.”

‘Cosmopolis’ Trailer Promises A World On The Brink

At long last, a US theatrical trailer for “Cosmopolis” has hit the web. While the movie looks as trippy as ever, this teaser gives us a better sense of the shape of the movie than anything that has come before.

And boy does Robert Pattinson look comfortable in such a bizarre, edgy movie. We’re used to seeing him as our favorite sparkly vampire, Edward Cullen, but it looks as though his portrayal of Eric Packer might be our favorite performance of his yet.

“Cosmopolis” made its premiere at Cannes in May, and will hit theaters on August 17. It tells the story of a Wall Street billionaire who spends the day driving around New York City in his limousine as the stock market, his fortune and society begin to crumble around him. David Cronenberg directs the film, which stars Pattinson, Sarah Gadon, Juliette Binoche, Jay Baruchel, Samantha Morton, Kevin Durand and Paul Giamatti.

Of course, this isn’t the only “Twilight”-related goodie that we have today. The cast of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2″ is headed to MTV News Comic-Con headquarters in an hour to talk anything and everything related to the final installment of the beloved series. Make sure you tune in to our livestream starting at 1pm ET/10am PT to get the scoop!

Michael K. Williams Joins Steve McQueen’s ‘Twelve Years A Slave’

Michael K. Williams Joins Steve McQueens Twelve Years A Slave

Every time a new cast member is added to “Twelve Years a Slave,” we continue to be more and more impressed. The latest actor that director Steve McQueen has snagged for his upcoming flick is Michael Kenneth Williams, better known as Chalky White in “Boardwalk Empire” and Omar Little in “The Wire.”

The news comes at us from Deadline, who is reporting that Williams will play a mutinous slave named Robert in “Twelve Years.” The film is an adaptation of Solomon Northup’s 1853 novel of the same name that told the story of his first year of freedom after being a slave for more than a decade. Chiwetel Ejiofor (“Salt,” “American Gangster”) has already been cast as Northup, a New York citizen who was kidnapped and forced to work on a cotton plantation in the South.

Those two names alone should grab people’s attention, but “Twelve Years” has lined up an impressive cast beyond them. Michael Fassbender—hot off McQueen’s “Shame”—was one of the first actors to sign on board and was quickly followed by Brad Pitt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti, Sarah Paulson, Paul Dano, Taran Killam and “Pariah” actress Adepero Oduye. We aren’t gushing about how great this cast is for nothing.

Even though this is McQueen’s third collaboration with Fassbender, we’re excited to see that it’s an ensemble film and also McQueen’s first time making a period drama. Judging by the big names he had join his cast, we’re not the only ones who are thrilled to see what he is capable of.
