Natalie Portman And Michael Fassbender Lead ‘Macbeth’ Adaptation

Natalie Portman And Michael Fassbender Lead Macbeth Adaptation

After filming roles in one of Terrence Malick‘s upcoming projects, on-set drama foiled Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman‘s big screen reunion in “Jane Got a Gun,” but the pair won’t have to wait too long to make up for it.

Screen Daily is reporting that Fassbender and Portman have both taken roles in a new screen adaptation of one of William Shakespeare‘s most beloved, and feared, plays, “Macbeth.” The take of a Scottish lord and his—let’s call her—eccentric wife will be directed by Justin Kurzel, who won praise for his breakout film, the brutal “Snowtown.”

According to the site, “Macbeth” starring Portman and Fassbender will not be a modernization of the psychologically terrifying play. “The new take on Shakespeare’s classic… is set in the 11th century and in the original language,” Screen Daily explains.

It seems that Kurzel’s take on “Macbeth” will differ from the Bard’s play in how he shoots the fight sequences. “The script is understood to be a visceral approach to the story including significant battle scenes,” Screen Daily elaborates.

Portman will appear next in “Thor: The Dark World,” which hits theater in November. She is currently filming “Jane Got a Gun” with Joel Edgerton and Bradley Cooper.

This year, Fassbender has “Twelve Years A Slave” from his “Shame” director Steve McQueen and “The Counselor” from Ridley Scott and Cormac McCarthy. Right now, he’s reprising his role as Magneto in “X-Men: Days of Future Past.”

Noomi Rapace Confirms Progress On ‘Prometheus’ Sequel

Noomi Rapace Confirms Progress On Prometheus Sequel

Depending on which side of the “Prometheus” line you fall on, we’ve either got some good news or some bad news for you. Work has begun on a “Prometheus” sequel.

The Playlist spoke with Noomi Rapace during her press tour for “Dead Man Down,” and the actress confirmed that she met with Ridley Scott earlier this month to talk sequel plans.

“They’re working on the script. I met Ridley in London a couple of weeks ago,” Rapace said. “I would love to work with him again and I know that he would like to do another one. It’s just like we need to find the right story. I hope we will.”

And for those of you hoping that a second “Prometheus” would drop the religious and philosophical elements that many complained about in the original just because Damon Lindelof wouldn’t be around this time, we’ve got more bad news for you.

“And it’s interesting because people, most people I’ve talked to who see the movie, see things that are quite different. Some people who see the movie many times and discover new things,” Rapace said. “There are all these religious aspects and there are very interesting conversations. And for me, if we do a second one, there are a lot of things to explore in there and to continue.”

As big fans of “Prometheus,” this is coming as good news for us. The first film’s ambiguity helped make it something different, even when it wasn’t being as successful as we may have wanted it to be. While Lindelof will be missed, it sounds like Scott knows what he wants to do with a second movie.

And that absolutely should involve Michael Fassbender‘s head in a bag.

Tony Scott Death Ruled Suicide; No Medical Condition Found

Two months after “Top Gun” director Tony Scott
 leaped to his death
from the Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro, California, the Los Angeles coroner’s office has officially ruled his death a suicide.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the 68-year-old director died on August 19 from multiple blunt-force injuries as a result of his plunge from the bridge. And, despite some reports at the time, the coroner ruled that Scott was not suffering from any serious medical conditions, including cancer, at the time of his suicide.

Investigators found no pre-existing conditions, based on both the autopsy and previous medical records. After Scott’s death, some media outlets reported on an anonymous source’s claims that Scott had a brain tumor, though his family denied those reports. Scott had what were described as “therapeutic levels” of the sleep aid Lunesta and the anti-depressant Remeron in his system, according to toxicology tests.

Coroner’s office investigators interviewed Scott’s family, but the discussion did not shed light on his frame of mind before the suicide and they have not offered any public explanation for why he took his life.

Scott’s directing credits were numerous (“Days of Thunder,” “Top Gun,” “True Romance,” “Crimson Tide“) and he was an equally successful producer of TV and film alongside his brother, fellow director and producing partner Ridley Scott, with whom he operated the highly successful company ScottFree Productions. In addition to their film producing credits, the Scott brothers are responsible for the Emmy-nominated TV hit “The Good Wife,” “Numb3rs,” “The Pillars of the Earth” miniseries and the recent AE miniseries remake of “Coma.”

Just in the time for the Blu-ray release of “Prometheus,” director Ridley Scott spoke with Metro U.K. about his two proposed sci-fi sequels, a follow-up to his “Alien” prequel and the long-rumored second “Blade Runner.”

The filmmaker spoke candidly about the possibilities for the sequels, even openly talking about where a sequel to “Prometheus” would take us.

” ‘Prometheus’ evolved into a whole other universe,” Scott said.

It pleases us to no end that a “Prometheus” sequel would follow the further adventures of Noomi Rapace’s Elizabeth Shaw and Michael Fassbender‘s head.

“You’ve got a person with a head in a bag that functions and has an IQ of 350,” Scott said. “It can explain to her how to put the head back on the body and she’s gonna think about that long and hard because, once the head is back on his body, he’s dangerous. They’re going off to paradise but it could be the most savage, horrible place. Who are the Engineers?”

As for the “Blade Runner” follow-up, Scott talked about it as a certainty with Harrison Ford‘s involvement being the major question mark.

“It’s not a rumor – it’s happening,” he said. “With Harrison Ford? I don’t know yet. Is he too old? Well, he was a Nexus-6 so we don’t know how long he can live [laughs]. And that’s all I’m going to say at this stage.”

Jackson, Will Smith and others taking hosting duties will be coming to you earlier than ever next year — and if that means we get a parody as hilarious as “Titanic: The Sequel” a few weeks earlier than usual, that’s all the better, we say!

The April air date for next year’s MTV Movie Awards ensures another thing as well — that the blockbusters and gut-busting comedies of 2012 won’t be forgotten. Indeed, 2012 marked a banner year for Hollywood, seeing the release of the record-breaking superhero epic “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Christopher Nolan‘s trilogy-ending “The Dark Knight Rises,” Ridley Scott‘s mind-bending space horror love letter “Prometheus,” Seth MacFarlane’s raunchy laugh-fest “Ted,” and shirtless Channing Tatum‘s no-clothes-barred hit “Magic Mike.”

‘Prometheus’ Behind-The-Scene Stills Show Different Take On Fifield Monster

One of the most endearing aspects of “Prometheus” was how lo-fi some of the creature effects were. The Engineers, the zombie-fied Fifield and that little surprise at the end had the look of some classic “Alien” creatures that made us a twinge nostalgic.

But new stills featured in Cinefex magazine (via Blood Disgusting) show an unused version of the Fifield monster post-mask melting, a digital one created by Weta Digital.

The images have wound up online and give us a look at a version of that monster that might have been.

Though the creature played by Rafe Spall ended up being made largely of practical effects, Ridley Scott filmed two versions of the scene, one featuring Spall acting with the prosthetic and one where the digital character could be added. Here’s the full description from Cinefex.

“To mutate Fifield beyond what was possible using practical makeup effects, Weta Digital generated a digital character with elongated limbs and an engorged, transluscent head, incorporating a semblance of Harris’ face. Scott filmed the sequence both with the actor in makeup and without, providing clean plates that would allow for the insertion of the digital character. The final cut featured mostly makeup effects, which Weta enhanced with digital wire removal, bullet hits, and one shot of the digital creature’s body blended to the actor.”

“Prometheus” will be out on Blu-ray and DVD on October 11.

‘Top Gun’ Director Tony Scott Dead At 68

A shock wave was sent through Hollywood Sunday night (August 19) as word spread of celebrated director Tony Scott‘s suicide. The “Top Gun” and “True Lies” helmer died by jumping from the Vincent Thomas suspension bridge into the Los Angeles Harbor near Long Beach, Calif. Sunday afternoon.

According to a report from the Coast Guard, Scott jumped from the south side of the bridge around 12:30 p.m. Pacific Standard time. The LA County coroner later revealed to local news outlets that Scott jumped “without hesitation.” Law enforcement officials said that a suicide note was found in Scott’s car, which was parked in one of the bridge’s southbound lanes. The contents of the note have not yet been released.

Authorities reportedly arrived on the scene shortly after 12:30 after a 911 call was placed by a witness. Officers from the LAPD, the California Highway Patrol and the U.S. Coast Guard worked together to recover Scott’s body from the water around 4 p.m.

News of the director/producer’s death broke online late Sunday evening and “RIP Tony Scott,” quickly became a trending topic on Twitter, along with individual trending topics dedicated to several of Scott’s memorable films including: “Days of Thunder,” “Top Gun,” “True Romance,” “Crimson Tide,” “Enemy of the State,” and “The Last Boy Scout.”

Scott’s directing credits are numerous and he was an equally successful producer of TV and film alongside his brother, fellow director and producing partner Ridley Scott, with whom he co-operated their highly successful production company ScottFree Productions. In addition to their film producing credits, the Scott brothers are responsible for the Emmy-nominated TV hit “The Good Wife,” “Numb3rs,” “The Pillars of the Earth” miniseries and the upcoming drama “Coma.”

Ridley has yet to make a public statement on the tragic news and a source close to the family told Deadline that they hope for the media to allow them time to grieve privately.

“We ask that the family’s privacy be respected at this time,” the source told the site.
