Rick Ross, GQ’s ‘Bawse Of The Year’ Gives Smoking Advice

1fd7d ROSS Rick Ross, GQs Bawse Of The Year Gives Smoking Advice

Rick Ross, rightfully so, has been crowned GQ‘s 2012 ‘Bawse Of The Year’ and as such he has some advice for all of you at home. First of all, don’t worry about overnight success (“The moves I make, I ain’t never in no rush”) but more importantly, it’s time to make some a big change in your lifestyle.

Though we can’t say we really agree with his first piece of advice, unless you’re about to get a deal–”One, for Christmas go get yourself an MMG tattoo”–number two is pretty surprising coming from a rapper (besides Wiz Khalifa), if we do say so ourselves. “Two, let’s all stop smoking blunts,” Ross declared. “Let’s smoke out of papers.” Wiz has been outspoken about his preference for, um, Rolling Papers, but who knew that Rozay felt so strongly about it?

And finally? “Ladies, you all should just love me. Let’s all have a beautiful year, let’s get this money.”

Rihanna was selected as GQ‘s Obsession of the Year, while Frank Ocean was named one of their Men of the Year.

Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J, Young Jeezy Hit Stage At 2012 Hip Hop Awards

By Rob Markman

Wiz Khalifa is a definite party animal, so why wouldn’t BET choose the Taylor Gang captain to set off their 2012 BET Hip Hop Awards show on Tuesday (October 9) night. And the Rolling Papers MC did not disappoint.

Cap stormed the stage to the beat of his O.N.I.F.C. single “Work Hard, Play Hard” in his usual rock-star fashion wearing a black leather jacket, black shades and a black fedora. The electric performer bounced back and forth onstage, doing his carefree Khalifa dance, kicking his legs and swinging his arms wildly above his head, while multicolored lights flashed behind him.

The already-enthralled crowd at the Atlanta Civic Center turned things up a notch when hometown hero Young Jeezy marched out onstage to rock his “Work Hard” remix verse. “Every night it’s champagne, n—a/ Key to life, maintain, n—a/ Nothin’ changed but the chain, n—a/ What weigh a ki? My chain, n—a,” the Snowman spit with his unmistakable Southern gruff.

Lil Wayne, who appears on the remix as well, wasn’t in attendance, so Three 6 Mafia veteran and Taylor Gang MC Juicy J gladly took his place with a verse of his own.

MTV News caught up with Wiz moments before his big performance on the BET red carpet, and while he was excited about the awards show and his Mixtape of the Year nomination for Taylor Allderdice, Pittsburgh’s shining star was also grinning ear-to-ear talking about his very pregnant bride-to-be Amber Rose and the couple’s baby on the way. Though he and Rose know the sex of the little bambino, Wiz refused to dish. “I do know, but then [Amber] told us not to say yet. We’ll wait until she’s ready,” he said, making sure to stick with the plan.

Wiz Khalifa Found ‘A Happy Medium’ On Much-Delayed O.N.I.F.C.

Wiz Khalifa and Atlantic Records may not exactly see eye to eye when it comes to the Pittsburgh star’s upcoming O.N.I.F.C.,but the hitmaker and his label aren’t exactly at odds either.

In the cover story for the upcoming October/November issue of ComplexMagazine, Wiz says that Atlantic wants more singles on his Rolling Papers follow-up, but he intends to do O.N.I.F.C. exactly how he wants. MTV News caught up with the Taylor Gang captain on September 15 before his New York City show as a part of the Heineken Red Star Access Tour and got a little clarification.

“There was always a happy medium,” Wiz told us. “It’s just like I said, you gotta express those views and that’s where I said I was at, at that point with me more or less having to express my views and make those stick.”

Khalifa insists that there is no problem between him and the powerhouse label. “It’s nobody’s problem or anything like that. That’s just where we was at, at the time,” he said.

As far as O.N.I.F.C. goes, Wiz promises that it will come before the end of the year after missing its initial August 28 date and its September 18 make-up date. “The album is completely done and that’s what it was, just getting it all the way finished,” Khalifa said before comparing it to last year’s Rolling Papers. “You can just expect it to be more musical. All the elements that you’re used to getting from a quote-unquote ‘Wiz project,’ you’re gonna get every last one of those elements, whereas I feel like the first album lacked some of those elements.”

Wiz Khalifa And Atlantic Butt Heads Over O.N.I.F.C Album

Wiz Khalifa And Atlantic Butt Heads Over O.N.I.F.C Album

By Rob Markman

Wiz Khalifa is getting ready to drop his anticipated O.N.I.F.C. album, but the Pittsburgh rapper still has some issues to sort out with his label.

Much has been made about Wiz Khalifa‘s duality. For most of his career, the Taylor Gang captain has been able to exist in two worlds: the free-wheeling, smoke-filled underground where he reigns as king and theBillboard charts which he has frequently been known to climb. It seems that for his upcoming sophomore LP O.N.I.F.C.his major label home Atlantic Records wants more of the latter and a little less of the former.

“Atlantic likes O.N.I.F.C., but they want more obvious singles because that’s what sells it for them,” Khalifa told Complex Magazine in the cover story for their October/November cover story.” My belief in the record is what sells it to me. It’s not a conflict. You just have to communicate so everybody understands it.”

Wiz won over his fans with a celebration collection of free Internet-based mixtapes like 2009′s Flight School and the modern-day classic Kush and Orange Juice. When it was time to release his major label debut Rolling Papers last year many charged that Khalifa had pulled a switch-a-roo, changing his beloved stoner sound for more pop-friendly hits like the #1 single “Black Yellow” and the Benny Blanco-produced “No Sleep.” It was a charge that Wiz addressed in an open letter to his fans in back February admitting that while RP was successful, it wasn’t his best work.

In March, Khalifa tapped back into his underground aesthetic and dropped his latest fan-favorite Taylor Allderdice, but now that the release date for his sophomore set is looming, it seems that he and Atlantic aren’t quite seeing eye-to-eye. Wiz just isn’t ready to compromise this time.

“When you’re working with other people, you figure out how much you do for them and how much you do for yourself,” he told the magazine. “You can’t just be an artist fighting for your opinion and that’s it. The label has to understand artists. I wanted to make Rolling Papers when I madeRolling Papers, now it’s time for O.N.I.F.C. Now we’re going to do it exactly how I want to do it to see how that works. It can’t be one-sided.”

Boaz Signs To Rostrum Records, Drops ‘Terminator’ Video

By Rob Markman

Pittsburgh has proven to have a wealth of rap talent. Wiz Khalifa put the Steel City on hip-hop’s map and Mac Miller followed waving the flag. Now ‘Burgh underground MC Boaz is next to put on for the city. On Friday (June 1), independent label Rostrum Records announced that they’ve signed Boaz to their label which already boasts such talent as Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller and pop princess Vali. And this summer, Boaz will join his new labelmates onstage for the Under the Influence of Music Tour.

“I’m very excited that Boaz is joining the Rostrum family,” label president Benjy Grinberg said in a press release issued to MTV News on Friday. “I have been a big fan of Bo and his music for many years, and I’m looking forward to working with him in a more substantial way.”

“It wasn’t a decision that was very hard for me given their track record of developing talented learned musicians into great artists,” Bo added in the release. “I’ve known the folks over there [at Rostrum] for some time and I think it is a good fit for both parties!”

Rostrum took a teenage and then-unknown Wiz and helped build him up through the mixtape and live-show circuits for several years before releasing his gold-selling, major-label debut, Rolling Papers, last year, cementing him as one of hip-hop’s brightest stars. With regard to Mac Miller, Grinberg and his Rostrum team have taken the independent route, choosing to grow Mac without the help of a major label.

All of the hard work paid off when Miller’s Blue Slide Park debuted at #1 on the Billboard albums chart when it was released back in November. Boaz, however, brings something distinctly different to the Rostrum mix. “I just bring that underground feel,” Bo told MTV News in December, describing his deeply rooted street sound. “I embrace the culture of that poverty line that I’m speaking about.”

Bo’s last mixtape, The Transition, released in May 2011, featured guest appearances from Mac Miller, Jay Rock and GLC and received critical acclaim among rap’s underground. Next, Boaz will drop a free Internet-based project titled Bases Loaded; expect it early this summer.

Wiz Khalifa Wins ‘Top New Artist’ At Billboard Music Awards

afad8 wizkhalifa Wiz Khalifa Wins Top New Artist At Billboard Music Awards

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy

Wiz Khalifa was crowned ‘Top New Artist’ at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday night (May 20). One of the show’s major honors, the “Black And Yellow” rapper was humble as he accepted his accolade, winning out over other hip-hop artists including Big Sean and Bad Meets Evil. In addition to his fans and his label family at Atlantic Records (Julie Greenwald and Michael Kyser) and Rostrum Records, Wiz thanked God, his parents and of course, his fiancé Amber Rose who was seated beside him in the audience.

Many fans scratched their heads over just how “new” of an artist Wiz really was, given his years of recording prior to Rolling Papers. “Wiz Khalifa is NOT a new artist” one tweeted while others added “Wiz Khalifa is STILL new artist? LMAOOO!” and “Wiz is forever being nominated for best new artist. He is not new!!” Gossip hub Concrete Loop succinctly tweeted, “Wiz Khalifa is not a new artist, by the way. He’s just newly mainstream.”

Fans can catch the new/old artist this summer at Rock The Bells. Last Tuesday (May 15), it was announced that headlining acts Missy Elliot, Timbaland and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony will perform along with Wiz Khalifa, Kid Cudi, Nas, J. Cole and Mac Miller. The first show will take place August 18 at the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, California.

50 Cent And Wiz Khalifa Collaboration: ‘Stay Tuned’

50 Cent was admitted to the hospital earlier this week when he began to suffer from severe stomach pains, but by the time he was released Thursday, the G-Unit CEO had already put plans into motion for a new collaboration with Wiz Khalifa.

MTV News caught up with Fif at his G-Unit offices in NYC after his release, and he explained that a tweet from Wiz gave birth to the collaboration. The tweet in question: “I Gotta Song I Wanna Put @50Cent On.”

“While I was sitting in the hospital, I saw Wiz Khalifa send a tweet out saying he got something, and he felt like it would be cool if I was actually on a record with him,” 50 said. “So I responded to him and I told him, ‘Let’s work.’ I’m feeling good, I was feeling better by the time that tweet went through, so I said, ‘Send it,’ and I spoke to him a later on.

“Stay tuned to hear what happens next because it’s gonna go down,” he added, confirming that the collaboration is for real. Fif’s guest verse is likely to pop up on the Taylor Gang MC’s upcoming LP O.N.I.F.C., which is set to debut August 28. It would mark their first collaboration together. Thus far, Wiz has revealed that features on his Rolling Papers follow-up will include Pharrell, Cam’ron, Curren$y and the Weeknd.

50 Cent has made a full recovery since his release from the hospital, and next Tuesday, he will drop The Lost Tape, hosted by DJ Drama.

During his stay in the hospital, the Queens mogul received a phone call from longtime friend and collaborator Eminem, who had a few firm words for him. “He goes, ‘Yo, Fif, you were shot nine times, man, if you die over a burger, this sh– ain’t gonna go right,’ ” 50 told MTV News just hours after his release. ” ‘People ain’t gonna be feelin’ this.’ “

Stay tuned to MTV News’ Mixtape Daily for more on 50 Cent and DJ Drama’s The Lost Tape.

Wiz Khalifa Brushed Off SpaceGhostPurrp Beef For ‘T.A.P.’ Collaboration

By Rob Markman

The beat on ”T.A.P.,”  from Wiz Khalifa‘s Taylor Allderdice mixtape was courtesy of A$AP Rocky producer SpaceGhostPurrp, but fans may not know that Purrp was once a Taylor Gang detractor. Luckily, the two artists were able to sidestep any issues to collaborate on a great track.

For those unfamiliar with Purrp’s catalog, in 2011 he released a song called“F— Taylor Gang,” on which he rapped, “This ain’t no Wiz, so f— a Khalifa.” The song didn’t hit Wiz’s radar at first, but the Purrp-produced A$AP Rocky track “Pretty Flacko” did. “I love that beat. I’m like, ‘Man, that beat is hard as hell,’ ” Wiz said when he appeared on last week’s “RapFix Live.”

After hearing “Pretty Flacko,” which dropped on New Year’s Day, the Taylor Gang captain immediately took to Twitter to express his appreciation for SpaceGhost’s work. Shortly after, the emerging producer hit Wiz back suggesting that they record a song together, and of course Khalifa agreed. “Then somebody was like, ‘You know he put out a song about you,’ ” Wiz recalled of how he first learned about “F— Taylor Gang.”

“I checked the song out and when I listened to it I kinda figured out what it was,” Wiz explained, not taking offense at Purrp’s lyrics. “Just being young people and being competitive, going for a spot, you don’t always know that it’s cool to let somebody know that you’re a fan of theirs, and that’s why I always try to reach back to people who are in their early stages and let ‘em know I listen to your music and I like your music.”

After hearing the track, the “Black and Yellow” MC cleared the air with SGP. “After that he sent me that crazy beat, and me and Juicy went in,” Wiz said of how “T.A.P.” came about.

Odd Future‘s Domo Genesis found himself in a similar situation when he and Wiz collaborated on their “Ground Up” single in February. Domo, who released his debut album, Rolling Papers, online for free in 2010 took exception when Khalifa announced that he’d be releasing an LP with the same name a few months later. There was some back and forth on Twitter, but eventually Wiz and the OF spitter were able to work it out when they randomly met in a Santa Monica, California, studio.

“I knew he was gonna bring up the Rolling Papers thing, and it came up. It was cool — it happened a long time ago,” Domo said when he and the rest of Odd Future appeared on “RapFix Live” in March.
