Ryan Gosling’s ‘Only God Forgives’ Earns Boos And Cheers At Cannes

Ryan Goslings Only God Forgives Earns Boos And Cheers At Cannes

The last time Ryan Gosling and director Nicolas Winding Refn went to Cannes together, they brought “Drive,” the movie that won the director’s prize at the festival and found a avid fan base in the states—and one person who was expecting a “Fast and Furious” rip-off.

They returned this year with the similarly stylish and violent “Only God Forgives.” The trailers and clips have had “Drive” fans eager to see what would come next from the star and director duo, but the early reviews out of Cannes aren’t as kind as they were for their last effort. While, “Only God Forgives” certainly has its fans, this may not be the movie that “Drive” fans were hoping for.

“While many will surely argue that this is all at the expense of story, there is enough of one here to keep things moving, even if barely, and Kristin Scott Thomas is everything she’s advertised to be. Get ready, the most badass art film ever is coming your way.”Ryland Aldrich, Twitch

“The wallpaper emotes more than Ryan Gosling does in ‘Only God Forgives,’ an exercise in supreme style and minimal substance from “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn…. As hyper-aggressive revenge fantasies go, it’s curious to see one so devoid of feeling, a veniality even ‘Drive’ fans likely won’t be inclined to forgive.”Peter Debruge, Variety

“A mesmerisingly moody and stylishly violent crime drama, Nicolas Winding Refn’s film fairly drips with tangible menace and a pervading sense of dread, and while perhaps too bloody to attract substantial mainstream audiences (or young fans of star Ryan Gosling) its sheer sense of cinematic control, gripping sound design and its artistic look will find willing viewers who buy into its sheer elegance and razor-edge drama.”Mark Adams, Screen Daily

“The skeletal narrative mixes martial arts action with sexually loaded mother-son conflict that makes superficial nods to Shakespeare and Greek tragedy. Even more than the Danish director’s previous film, this one has way more style than subtext, not that it’s likely to diminish its cultish allure for avid genre fans.”David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

em>”If one wants to root around for depth it is there, I suppose. Gosling, the Son, is a redeemer through his shred of dignity. But Chang, ruthless and all powerful, is perhaps on the side of right. But just as only God may forgive, only stoners who are blown away by gruesome violence and Cliff Martinez scores will have any interest in parsing this tale. The rest won’t be quite so forgiving.” —Jordan Hoffman, Film.com

“Only God Forgives” hits theaters and VOD on July 19.

Mac Miller Makes ‘The Notebook’ Funnier And Dirtier

FROM RAPFIX

Mac Miller‘s next album, “Watching Movies with the Sound Off,” drops on June 18, and in the lead-up the album, he stopped by MTV News to talk to our friends at RapFix to act out the name of his record.

Watch the video above to see Mac Miller literally watch movies with the sound off, but since that would be totally awkward, he adds in a few lines to the most famous scene from “The Notebook.”

In the newest version of the modern romance classic, Ryan Gosling is about to leave Rachel McAdams, but she has to convince him to stay in order to star in “Drive” and explain to people why he doesn’t talk that much. He, on the other hand, has some issues with her performance in the bedroom. It’s way better than the older version.

Mac Miller Watches ‘How High’ With The Sound Off And Narrates

In honor of his upcoming sophomore album Watching Movies With the Sound Off, which drops on June 18, we thought it would be entertaining to have Mac Miller watching a few movies with the sound off and try his best to narrate them. Earlier, there was “The Notebook,” which he wasn’t too familiar with (but he did a pretty good job with Ryan Gosling‘s lines, honestly) and this time it’s one of his favorites “How High.” Watch what happens in the video above.

Watching a movie with Mac Miller sounds like a good time, but catching a silent flick with Mac is even better. With Miller’s upcoming June 18 album Watching Movies with the Sound Off we thought it’d be fun to watch some of our favorite films, without the sound and have Mac fill in the rest. First up is “The Notebook.”

Now we don’t know if the Most Dope general has ever seen the Nick Cassavetes love fest, or if he just has a bad memory, but we’re pretty sure Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams weren’t arguing about bad sexual practice and Gosling’s role in “Drive.”

“No, don’t you leave Ryan Gosling, you gotta be a big star because you’re gonna be in ‘Drive’ one day and everyone is gonna love it but no one is going to understand what happened and why you didn’t speak for the first 30 minutes of the movie,” Miller said, trying his best to fill in Rachel McAdams’ blanks.

Ryan Gosling Learns All About Violence In ‘Only God Forgives’ Featurette

The previews and clips from Ryan Gosling‘s upcoming movie with “Drive” director Nicolas Winding Refn, “Only God Forgives,” have made two things about the Thai-set crime thriller: It’s going to be beautiful, and it’s going to be violent.

“Only God Forgives” doesn’t open in U.S. theaters until July 19, but festival audiences will be able to catch it this month at Cannes and in June at the L.A. Film Festival. If you can’t make it to those special screenings and cannot wait until July, a new behind-the-scenes featurette (via The Playlist) explores Refn’s thoughts on violence and how to show it properly in movies.

The whole speech makes sense, but it’s certainly odd. And Refn’s audience for the talk, Gosling, seems to agree with that sentiment. He spends most of the video shooting curious looks back at the camera, making sure he’s not the only one hearing the director take about how violence is sex.

“Only God Forgives” opens in theaters on July 19.

Ryan Gosling In ‘Only God Forgives’ Clips: A Much Darker ‘Drive’

Ryan Gosling In Only God Forgives Clips: A Much Darker Drive

The footage and images from Nicolas Winding Refn and Ryan Gosling‘s second collaboration “Only God Forgives” that have started to trickle out ahead of a July 19 release in the U.S. have painted a picture in a much darker shade of neon than their first work together, “Drive.”

Yes, Gosling will be back as the silent, violent type in a film shot in Refn’s impeccable style, but as the first three clips (via The Playlist) from “Only God Forgives” demonstrate, this is a more violent, more psychosexual movie than “Drive” ever was.

Watch all three NSFW clips after the jump!

The first clip features the shot from the trailer that probably made you cringe the most. As he’s sitting in a club, Gosling’s Julian gets up without a word and beats the crap out of the two guys across from him, eventually dragging one of them down the hallway by his teeth.

The next clip introduces us to Julian’s charming mother, the Thai-based drug lord Crystal. The matriarch is unimpressed by Julian’s date and his lack of support after the death of his brother Billy, who apparently had a bigger penis.

The third clip focuses on Chang, the cop that drives the action of “Only God Forgives.” When a hit on him goes wrong, he chases down his would-be assassins to dish out his own particular style of justice.

“Only God Forgives” opens in U.S. theater on July 19.

Six Things You Didn’t Know about Tom Cruise

Six Things You Didnt Know about Tom Cruise

By Tara Fowler

This weekend, a movie called “Oblivion” hits theaters. It is not, as I believed when it was first announced, based on the popular video game (which I wouldn’t be opposed to — make it happen, Hollywood!). Instead, this film sees Tom Cruise as one of the last humans stationed on a dying Earth following an alien attack sixty years prior*. Here are seven facts about the savior of mankind:

1) The name of Cruise’s daughter Suri comes from the Hebrew word for “princess”: And the Persian word for “red rose,” per the statement released at the time of her birth. It’s also the Japanese word for “pickpocket,” but the press release doesn’t mention that. In any case, it’s a moot point since this very reliable British tabloid has reported that Katie Holmes is planning to change her daughter’s name after her divorce from Tom Cruise is finalized. The top contender? Scout, of “To Kill a Mockingbird” fame.

2) There’s a whole day dedicated to him: In 2006, Japan declared October 10 “Tom Cruise Day” in honor of the actor’s love for the country. He’s visited it more than any other Hollywood star.

3) He’s the original Ryan Gosling: Before Gosling was saving people left and right on the streets of NYC, Cruise was Hollywood’s knight in shining armor. In 1996, he helped the victim of a hit-and-run by taking her to the hospital and then paying her medical bills when he discovered she didn’t have health insurance. Later that same year, he (or, well, his yacht’s staff) rescued five people from a burning sailboat. Then, at the “Mission: Impossible” premiere, he saved two boys from getting crushed against barricades by the crowd.

4) Aladdin was modeled after him: When designing the Disney character, producers drew inspiration from Cruise’s “eyebrows and straight-off-the-forehead nose.” “There’s a confidence with all of his attitudes and his poses,” lead animator Glen Keane told Entertainment Weekly at the time.

5) Cruise attended 15 different schools over the course of 12 years: Moving throughout the US and Canada, Cruise went to a new school almost every year until he was 14 and his family settled in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. He also studied to be a priest, but dropped out after a year, and, you know, eventually embraced Scientology.

6) He played football in high school — until he was cut from the team: For drinking beer! As this unauthorized biography so eloquently puts it, “he was not the only one drinking; he was just the only one who got caught.”

Bonus) Cruise has appeared in three movies with his second wife, Nicole Kidman: Most notably the instant classic “Far and Away.” Say you like my hat!

Will you be seeing Oblivion this weekend?

*These aliens are unrelated to Scientology. Shame on you.
