‘Finding Nemo 3D’: The Reviews Are In!

It’s hard to believe it’s been nearly 10 years since Nemo, Dory and Marlin swam their way into our hearts in “Finding Nemo,” yet another innovative, fun-for-everyone animated adventure courtesy of the brilliant minds at Pixar. This week marks the re-release of the Oscar winner, but with the added visual bells and whistles of 3-D.

Unsurprisingly, critics are still delighted by the colorful undersea adventure that revolved around an overly protective father clownfish who goes on a life-changing journey to save his kidnapped son, and it has earned a 99 percent Fresh rating over at Rotten Tomatoes.

So let’s take a deeper dive and swim through the “Finding Nemo 3D” reviews!

The 3-D Enhancements
” ‘Finding Nemo’ (2003), Pixar’s best animated feature Oscar winner, is an ideal choice for a 3-D re-release. Its Pacific Ocean setting is majestic, immersive, not intrusive, in evoking the vast sweep of the water and bringing us into the world of the tiny fish characters. Digital and stop-motion animation give 3-D technicians more options and control in adapting the original material than live-action or hand-drawn animation. (That’s why the highlight of the recent 3-D re-release of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ was the ballroom scene, one of the earliest uses of digital technology in a hand-drawn animated feature.) Here they are brilliantly used to evoke the story’s emotional experience. As Marlin, the little clownfish (voice of Albert Brooks), looks for his young son, Nemo (Alexander Gould), we feel the bleakness of the ocean’s overwhelming size and power. And when Nemo is captured, we experience the claustrophobia of the small aquarium.” — Nell Minow, The Chicago Sun Times

The Pixar Pedigree
“By its very pedigree as a Pixar production, it pellets the viewer with perfectly round pearls of one-liners and visual gags, delivered at double speed. One of its best features is the voice cast, headed up by Brooks (a truly inspired piece of casting) and Ellen DeGeneres (ditto). It makes interesting use of underwater darkness and light, different aspects of aquatic physics, and provides a spirited answer to the question of how a tiny little clownfish will cross hundreds of miles to get from the Great Barrier Reef to downtown Sydney. As L.B. Jeffreys once said to Lisa Carol Fremont, with no small amount of wilted exasperation, it’s perfect.” — Jaime N. Christley, Slant

The Final Word
“Like most Pixar films, this one was made with extraordinary heart and craft. Enhanced by its new 3-D conversion, every visual detail amazes in the gorgeous underwater world (though, frustratingly, the 3-D glasses also make the vivid colors darker).Viewers of every age will be touched by the themes, which are handled with typical Pixarian dexterity. Love and loyalty, fear and frustration — these aren’t feelings limited to either children or adults. Like every great family classic, ‘Finding Nemo’ was made for everyone.” — Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News

Big Time Rush’s Tour Means Trampolines, Video Games And A ‘Good Time’

WANTAGH, New York — The boys of Big Time Rush certainly have had a memorable summer so far. They are currently halfway through their Big Time Tour, traveling across the U.S. and Canada bringing the fun and excitement to thousands of fans, a.k.a. The Rushers, each night.

MTV News caught up with Kendall, Logan, James and Carlos before hitting the stage at Nikon at Jones Beach Amphitheatre and the boys gave us an exclusive backstage tour of the venue, while explaining the best parts of life on the road.

“We get to wake up in a different city every single day and actually meet fans one-on-one every day,” James Maslow said. “And obviously playing the show doesn’t hurt.”

Logan added, “Not to mention you get to wake up around noon, so if you had a long night, it’s always good to sleep in.”

Before a show, the Nickelodeon boy band relax in their dressing room, which is covered in red and brown drapes, complete with their makeshift studio, where they are recording their next album, and of course a wide array of video games. In between battles of “Mario Kart 7″ and “Call of Duty,” Maslow and Pena have to tend to their dogs, an Alaskan Klee Kai named Fox and a German Shepherd, Sydney, who have joined them on tour.

A few hours later, after “X Factor” cutie Rachel Crow and Australian pop singer Cody Simpson get the crowd warmed up, they get ready to take the stage. Yet, before they greet their fans with their opening number, “Elevate”, there are many thoughts going through their head.

“I hope they enjoy tonight and to not be nervous, get it out of your mind,” Kendall Schmidt said of what he thinks about moments before performing. “We do this little chant like get out of your mind and we pump ourselves up.”

Maslow added, “We remind ourselves each night to just have a good time, if you screw up, because we are playing 70 shows, you’re bound to mess up things here and there, don’t let it get to you, just have a good time.”

And they admit that there have been times where they have noticeably messed up, especially during the songs where they bring out a trampoline.

“The trampoline is what gets us the most,” Schmidt said. “Carlos went to do a back flip and landed and scraped his leg.”

Yet, even when they are falling on stage, serenading girls in the crowd or getting concert goers to yell “woo-hoo” during the performance of their catchy new single “Windows Down,” Big Time Rush‘s main goal on stage is to just have a blast.

“The stage for our whole show is actually really interesting and a lot of fun,” Logan Henderson said. “There’s always something going on so we figure even the people who come up and don’t know Big Time Rush love the show because there’s always something going on, so that’s what we love about it.”
Schmidt added, “And we have like 18 songs so it’s like an hour and a half of an awesome show and we’re dancing up there and working our butts off for sure.”

Jay-Z And Kanye’s ‘Smaller Moments’ Captured In Watch The Throne Doc

At this point, Jay-Z and Kanye West have already completed the U.S. and European legs of the tour in support of their joint Watch the Throne album, but this week, on the anniversary of the LP‘s release, a 10-minute documentary of the recording process was released. The film’s director, Robert Lopuski, told MTV News he hoped to capture the duo’s most intimate moments in the studio.

The documentary was filmed at a private estate in Sydney, Australia, where the Throne posted up to finish recording the monumental album. Lopuski, who previously worked with ‘Ye on his “Power” video and saw plenty of his work featured on West’s blog, received a call from Kanye’s manager Don C, asking him to properly document the sessions.

“Both Jay and Kanye felt that it was an important thing for them to [document], so Don C called me up and invited me down,” Lopuski said. “The Australia sessions were very intimate; it was really just six or seven people in a room. They rented a mansion and turned it into a recording studio.”

Without any specific direction from the Throne, Lopuski got to work trying to craft something unique. “I am a fan and was a fan of the guys before I flew down there,” he said. “It’s so easy in hip-hop to sell these big, bombastic, exaggerated gestures, but I was more interested in the smaller moments and the quietness of what they do and why they do it. It’s something that I’ve always wanted to see and I was striving to capture the little moments in their process.”

Though the documentary captures moments with Jay-Z and even his wife Beyoncé hanging at the private estate, it also zeroes in on Kanye West‘s rise to glory, splicing in footage from a decade ago, including his infamous Roc-A-Fella Records “chaining day.”

“Being a fan of both of those guys, I knew their story and I felt there was something really powerful there,” Lopuski said of his decision to add the vintage footage. “Essentially Kanye was a fan who became a collaborator with Jay and then became his own thing. Historically, that was really charged to me, to be in the studio and see these guys working together, so I wanted to go back and touch that.”

While it was Lopuski’s job as a professional to capture the intimate studio moments, there were a few that he wasn’t able to share on camera that will always remain with him.

“One time they were playing tracks and everybody was commenting on tracks, and Jay every now and then would walk around the studio and try verses out,” he explained, recalling one standout incident. “And there was one moment where Jay came up to me, tapped me and tried a verse out on me. I wasn’t expecting it, and I looked up as he tried the verse out, and I was completely shocked that that was happening. He looked at me to see what my response was, and I just smiled. Inside of an already special experience, that was something even further.”

Madonna Scraps Australia Tour Plans

Madonna has scrapped her plans to tour Australia in the spring as part of her MDNA Tour, according to her concert promoter, Live Nation (via the BBC).

“Madonna’s tour will end in South America in December as planned. That’s all we can say,” a Live Nation spokesperson said.

Although the pop queen never officially announced any tour dates Down Under, a number of Australian media outlets are reporting that stadiums had already been booked in Sydney and Melbourne for early next year. It was rumored that Madonna planned to announce the concerts last week, but decided to hold off until after the Olympics.

Several sources are citing a combination of high ticket prices and a crowded concert market for the scrapped tour plans.

Arthur Fogel, CEO of Live Nation Global Touring, indicated to Billboard in February that the singer would tour Australia while talking up her MDNA Tour plans. “Of the shows we’re doing, I’d say 25-30 percent will be markets she’s never played before. There’s still a few left,” he said. “We’ll get to these markets where she’s never been, some exciting new places, and get back to Australia after too long a time.”

Fogel echoed a sentiment expressed by Madonna’s manager, Guy Oseary, following her record-setting Sticky Sweet Tour. After rumors that she would hit Australia on that 2008-09 trek didn’t come to fruition, the BBC reports that Oseary told fans during a QA, “Madonna really needs to go to Australia. Unfortunately it didn’t work out for this tour. She appreciates her Aussie fans coming to many of the shows … We are long overdue for a trip Down Under and apologize for that. It will happen.”

Madonna last toured Australia in 1993 on her Girlie Show Tour. She will conclude her MDNA Tour in Cordoba, Argentina, on December 22.

‘Brave,’ ‘Hunger Games’ And The History Of Lady Archers

A fiery bow-and-arrow-wielding heroine not named Katniss Everdeen? Color us intrigued!

This weekend, Pixar will take aim at the box-office bull’s-eye with its first foray into the fairy-tale princess pic. “Brave” follows a young Scottish royal named Merida, who bucks her parents’ wishes, insisting on paving her own path — with bow firmly in hand.

Of course, the animated flick is only the latest this year to feature an adept bow-woman (or bowman). There was Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) in “The Avengers,” William (Sam Claflin) in “Snow White and the Huntsman” and, our obvious favorite, Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) in “The Hunger Games.” Unsurprisingly, this slew of big-screen portrayals has helped revive interest in the ancient sport, with more and more amateur archers sizing up their targets.

But let’s be clear about one thing: Bow-besotted babes are nothing new. Lady archers have been around practically since the dawn of time. Follow me down their storied path:

Like most grand ideas, the concept of a woman and her bow has roots in Greek mythology. “Amazon” may be a compliment for a leggy lady nowadays, but maybe it shouldn’t be, considering the ancient archers were often depicted with their left breast cut off to make wielding their weaponry simpler. The Greek goddess of the hunt, Artemis, was also frequently pictured holding a bow and arrow (sans missing mammary glands).

Throughout the Middle Ages, archery served dual purposes: fending off enemies and hunting prey for sustenance. But by the Elizabethan era, it had become a posh pastime, with proper ladies learning the sport — along with dancing and riding — as part of their studies. (P.E. was soooo much cooler back then.) In fact, Queen Elizabeth I herself (daughter of Henry VIII) is said to have been a skilled archer.

A few hundred years later, the sport made its Olympics debut in 1900, with women taking up arms at the 1904 games. The event took a hiatus from the Games between 1920 and 1972, reappearing at the Munich Olympics. And while plenty of Hollywood heavyweights have learned the skill for a movie, one took it upon herself to learn for the sport of it. Actress Geena Davis made it all the way to the semifinal rounds of the Olympic trials in 1999, hoping to compete in the 2000 games in Sydney. The games and a gold medal were not in Davis’ future, but she already has one gilded goody (namely, an Oscar) to console herself.

And speaking of actresses and archery, the last few decades have offered up a bumper crop of bow roles, from Gwyneth Paltrow in “Emma” to Saoirse Ronan in “Hannah.” And, of course, Lawrence in “The Hunger Games.”

All we have so say is, may the odds be ever in your favor, lady archers!

Lady Gaga’s MRI Checks Out Fine

A little more than a week after Lady Gaga suffered a concussion and some bruises from an onstage collision with a metal set piece on her Born This Way Ball, the singer got some good news: She’s doing just fine.

“Went for an MRI,” she tweeted on Wednesday (June 20). “No harm from the concussion but it appears my brain is just water and a large floating jellyfish.” She then shared just who she got the check-up for, adding a little note to her dad. “@germanottajoe i had them check my noodle,” she wrote. “that was your father’s day present Il mio babbo!! I thought they were taking me to the zoo. TRICKS.”

The injury took place on June 10 while the Mother Monster was in New Zealand when a dancer accidentally hit her with a set piece mid-song. She walked off during “Judas” only to return to the stage after a short break to perform 16 more songs. “I want to apologize,” she later told the crowd. “I did hit my head and I think I may have a concussion. But don’t you worry, I will finish this show.”

Gaga will play several shows in Sydney, including a gig on Wednesday night. She’ll play Australia through the remainder of this month before hitting up Europe in July. She has dates slated right through December abroad. She has yet to announce North American dates for her elaborate Born This Way Ball, with a gothic castle serving as the tour’s main visual.

In addition to touring through the rest of 2012, Gaga will also release her first fragrance, Fame, in September, which also happens to be the month she will announce the title of her next album, the follow-up to 2011′s Born This Way.

One Direction’s Harry Styles’ Celebrity Crushes Reveal Taste For Older Women

One Direction‘s Harry Styles is opening up about the older ladies he’s crushing on, and nowhere in there was Taylor Swift‘s name mentioned, despite rumors that something romantic might have been brewing.

According to the Sun out of the U.K., the floppy-haired boy bander is crushing on three ladies even older than 22-year-old Swift: The 18-year-old shared that, if given the chance, he would date Angelina Jolie (36), Kate Moss (38) or Kate Winslet (36). Any of those three wouldn’t be his first older woman: He previously dated 32-year-old TV presenter Caroline Flack.

For any girl out there who is not one of those three superstars and is looking for a way to catch the singer’s attention, Styles candidly revealed what he likes his ladies to wear. “I like my girlfriends to wear black lingerie … definitely,” he shared.

But, the romance talk didn’t end there. He noted that if he sees a lady he thinks is pretty, well, he doesn’t exactly have any smooth lines he likes to use on her. “I’m not really a pick-up-line guy. I don’t know what I do,” he confessed.

Harry has been linked to quite a few ladies since 1D dropped their debut album, Up All Night, last month — none of which have been Winslet, Jolie or Moss. However, his list of rumored ladies does include American singer Lily Halpern, New York-based photographer Sarah-Louise Colivet, Victoria’s Secret model Emma Ostilly and former “Bachelorette” Jillian Harris.

With some time off before the guys kick off their U.S. tour next month, Styles is opening up about his favorite places and how he’s looking forward to the downtime. “I’m so tired. It was pretty intense, but a lot of fun. I have six weeks to chill out now,” he told BBC Radio 1. “My favorite places were New York and Sydney. I’d never been to Australia or New Zealand before, so that was sick.”
