‘Iron Man 3′ Co-Writer Set To Script ‘Mission: Impossible 5′

After scripting the biggest hit of 2013, “Iron Man 3,” it’s no surprise that screenwriter Drew Pearce has moved on to a similarly big project. It’s being reported that Pearce has signed on to pen the screenplay for the upcoming “Mission: Impossible” sequel “Mi5.”

The Hollywood Reporter has the news, confirming that Paramount Pictures has hired Pearce to write the script. Tom Cruise is expected to both produce and star in the film once he’s done with his next feature, “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”

By the time Cruise is done with Guy Ritchie’s “U.N.C.L.E.,” “Mi5″ should be ready for a fall filming start date. Story details of the next “Mission: Impossible” movie are being kept a secret, and it’s unclear of Jeremy Renner will be reprising his role as William Brandt. Christopher McQuarrie is still in discussions to the direct the film, though he hasn’t been locked down yet.

“We’ve been talking about it, yes,” McQuarrie recently told MTV News. “We’re figuring it out right now. I’m looking at pictures from all over the world and just deciding what invites action.”

In addition to “Mission: Impossible 5,” Pearce is also said to be working on an original spec script that will be his directorial debut. He also helped develop “Pacific Rim” and is said to be attached to write “Sherlock Holmes 3.”

Tom Cruise Signs Up For ‘Mission: Inevitable’ AKA ‘Mission: Impossible 5′

Tom Cruise Signs Up For Mission: Inevitable AKA Mission: Impossible 5

Not that this should come to as a surprise to anyone, but Tom Cruise wants to keep making movies. And his best bet right now is a little franchise enjoying a strong second wind called “Mission: Impossible.” Since the fourth movie in the series, “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,” took over the world to the tune of $700 million, a fifth movie was inevitable. Now, according to Deadline, we can change “inevitable” to “happening.”

Cruise has officially signed deals with Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions to star in and produce a fifth “Mission: Impossible” movie. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot will once again develop the movie with Cruise and a yet-to-be-named director.

Around the time “Jack Reacher” was about to hit theaters last year, rumors began to circulate the director job belonged to Christopher McQuarrie if he chose to accept the mission. There hasn’t been any update on that front, but Deadline is still hearing his name attached and expects an answer in the next few weeks.

Cruise has found moderate success outside of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise in recent years, but nothing has come close to his recent string of hits as Ethan Hunt. His last film “Oblivion” was far from a smash hit in the states, but it’s world-wide total sits at a little over $220 million.

Before that, “Jack Reacher” did roughly the same amount of business, taking in $80 million in the U.S. and $136 million elsewhere.

There is no release tentative release date yet, but stay tuned in the coming weeks for further updates.

Armie Hammer Takes ‘The Man From U.N.C.L.E.’ Opposite Tom Cruise

Armie Hammer Takes The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Opposite Tom Cruise

Armie Hammer is trading one big costar for another. After teaming with Johnny Depp in “The Lone Ranger,” he will reportedly be starring opposite Tom Cruise in the upcoming “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.”

Deadline has learned that Hammer is slated to play United Network Command for Law Enforcement agent Illya Kuryakin in the new movie. He will team up with Cruise, who will play fellow agent Napoleon Solo. Together they’ll have to fend off the villainous forces of Thrush.

Guy Ritchie is slated to direct “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.” after Steven Sodenbergh passed on it. The TV series that the movie is based on ran from 1964 to 1968 and starred Robert Vaughan and David McCallum in the main roles. This will be Hammer’s first time working with both Cruise and Ritchie.

Following his breakout in “The Social Network,” Hammer hasn’t been the sole lead in a film yet, but working alongside greats like Depp and Cruise is certainly sending him off on the right direction.

Tom Cruise Likes To Go Fast In ‘Jack Reacher’ Featurette

When filming “Jack Reacher,” Tom Cruise presented director Christopher McQuarrie with a unique problem. Most actors do not do their own stunt driving and therefore require stand-ins and crafty camera work to create the illusion that they do.

As we see in this exclusive featurette from the Best Buy edition of the “Jack Reacher” Blu-ray, Cruise required the opposite. Since the actor would be doing his own stunts, McQuarrie needed to create shots that would show off his actor behind the wheel.

The resulting chase sequence ended up looking like something we don’t see a lot in movie anymore, where the shot hammers home the realness of the situation.

Learn all about it in the video above, and look for “Jack Reacher” on Blu-ray and DVD on May 7 and for digital download now!

Tom Cruise’s ‘Oblivion’ Effective Enough To Win Weekend Box Office

Tom Cruises Oblivion Effective Enough To Win Weekend Box Office

Tom Cruise has had a rough time at the box office in recent years. Aside from the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, the A-lister hasn’t registered an opening weekend north of $30 million since 2005′s “War of the Worlds.”

That all changed with “Oblivion,” which opened early overseas to strong ticket sales and debuted this weekend in the U.S. to $38 million. To date, the sci-fi actioner from “Tron: Legacy” director Joseph Kosinksi has banked $150 million.

But what did you think of “Oblivion”? The film, which also stars Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, and Andrea Riseborough, didn’t exactly wow the critics, many of whom referenced a lack of originality.

10 Original Sci-Fi Movies To Enjoy This Weekend

10 Original Sci Fi Movies To Enjoy This Weekend

This weekend, “Oblivion” starring Tom Cruise opens in theaters across the U.S. Some critics are giving the movie, which has otherwise been lukewarmly received, the benefit of the doubt for being the rare sci-fi movie that isn’t based on a book or movie.

While there is something to be said about the lack of sci-fi movie in theaters these days, there are much better examples of the genre from the past 10 years that may have slipped under your radar. Check out a sample below.

“Primer”
This one might actually count as two or three movies because that’s how many time you’ll have to watch it to come even close to understand Shane Carruth‘s labyrinth of a time travel plot. Plus, a viewing of “Primer” will get you in the right frame of mind to take in Carruth’s latest film, the terrific “Upstream Color.”

“District 9″
We still have a few more months before Neill Blomkamp‘s next sci-fi joint, “Elysium,” opens in theaters, so why not take some time to revisit his first theatrical effort, “District 9″? It’s probably been a while since you watched the story of Wikus and Christopher Johnson, so let us remind you that this movie got nominated for Best Picture. Think about that.

“Looper”
Expectations were high for Rian Johnson‘s third feature film, and the time travel action adventure starring Bruce Willis and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, playing the younger version of his costar delivered in a big way.

“Sunshine”
Danny Boyle’s trip to the sun made for a refreshing intelligent sci-fi thriller, and it proved that Chris Evans could actually act. The movie tells the story of a dying sun and the crew of astronauts that go to reignite it.

“Attack the Block”
Though Joe Cornish’s directorial debut didn’t make the enormous splash that it should have, “Attack the Block” found an immediate cult following, so it’s life as a hilarious and fun movie should be one that continues on for years to come.

“Monsters”
There’s a reason Gareth Edwards is directing the “Godzilla” reboot, and that reason is “Monsters,” a simple and beautiful low-budget monster movie.

“Moon”
The sci-fi genre owes a debt to Sam Rockwell and writer-director Duncan Jones for this perfect, old-school flick. Watch it and then try to explain why more people haven’t heard of it. Because you can’t.

“Contagion”
A handful of lukewarm reviews and one or two odds story choices kept “Contagion” from being the hit that it should have been, but it is certainly worth checking out and enjoying.

“Another Earth/Sound of My Voice”
All hail, Brit Marling, the Queen of indie sci-fi. Marling rose to these heights when she brought two films to Sundance in 2011. Each works on its own terms with different feels and tones.
