[News] Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 1/27/2013

A$AP Rocky continues to sell strong in his second week at retail. Macklemore Ryan Lewis ride the success of “Thrift Shop” higher up the album charts.

After making a chart-topping debut last week, A$AP Rocky continues to move copies of his debut Long.Live.A$AP, which keeps the Harlem, New York emcee in good company alongside Bruno Mars and Mumford Sons. But just outside of the top 10 lurks Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ The Heist, which rises based on the success of their breakout single “Thrift Shop.”

New Hip Hop releases to the chart this week were scarce, as Christian Hip Hop vet Sho Baraka is now nowhere to be found following last week’s top 100 debut.

Check below to see who had the strongest week on the charts.

Long.Live.A$AP‘s Reign On Top Short, But Hangs On

A$AP Rocky had quite the debut last week. The Harlemite, who’s made a name for himself over the past few years with his breakout mixtape Live.Love.A$AP as well as guest appearances on T.I.’s Trouble Man: Heavy Is The Head and Big Boi’s Vicious Lies And Dangerous Rumors, bowed atop the charts with an impressive 140,000 copies sold of the LP, beating out Kidz Bop 23 by a 58,000-copy margin.

This week, the The RCA/Polo Grounds release holds on strong. The LP dips from the top spot to No. 7, selling an additional 38,000 copies – enough to put him between Mumford Sons’ Babel and Bruno Mars’ Unorthodox Jukebox. The critically acclaimed album features guest appearances from a slew of emcees including Drake, Kendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz, and has spawned a pair of singles from the album including “Goldie” and “Fuckin’ Problems,” which was recently certified gold. Additional standouts on the album include posse cut “1 Train” featuring Kendrick Lamar, Action Bronson, Joey Bada$$, Danny Brown, Yelawolf and Big K.R.I.T.

Macklemore Ryan Lewis Continue To Hijack Charts With The Heist

Independent artists Macklemore and Ryan Lewis show that hard work pays off. The Seattle-based duo dropped their collaborative debut The Heist back in October, bowing at No. 2 with 78,000 copies sold. Since then, the pair has steadily grown on the charts thanks to the success of the platinum-certified “Thrift Shop,” which hit the top of Hot 100 last week. Now, the LP continues to ascend thanks to the renewed interest. This week, the set drops one spot from No. 11 to 12, keeping a strong grip on the top 20.

The group is also shooting a video for “Can’t Hold Us,” which could positively impact sales of the album.

[News] Hip Hop Album Sales: The Week Ending 1/20/2013

A$AP Rocky’s “Long.Live.A$AP” is 2013′s first #1 Hip Hop album – and by a landslide margin. Sho Baraka is the latest former 116 Clique member to smash the charts with “Talented 10th.”

Hip Hop has its first #1 debut of 2013. A$AP Rocky’s debut album Long.Live.A$AP earned the Harlem, New York emcee the coveted spot on the charts. This is also the first #1 Polo Grounds Music, the RCA label Rocky is signed to, which has previously released albums from Pitbull, Yo Gotti and Hurricane Chris.

The only other addition to the charts this week came courtesy of Christian Hip Hop vet Sho Baraka. The Lions Liars label artist’s Talented 10th release, which features Tedashii and J.R.

Notably absent from the Top 200 was Nas’ Life Is Good, who missed the rankings for the first time since its summer release.

Long.Live.A$AP Lives Up To Its Name On The Charts

Following appearances on T.I.’s Trouble Man: Heavy Is The Head, Big Boi’s Vicious Lies And Dangerous Rumors and Usher’s Looking For Myself, the 24 year-old breakout star of the A$AP Mob found a benchmark first week with his own Long.Live.A$AP. The RCA/Polo Grounds release sold nearly 140,000 units earning the emcee a #1 spot – over 60,000 units ahead of Kidz Bop 23.

Rocky’s retail follow-up to 2011′s Live.Love.A$AP includes appearances from stars such as Drake, Kendrick Lamar and 2 Chainz, as well as a Internet-touted posse cut (“1 Train”) of digital stars such as Action Bronson, Joey Bada$$, Big K.R.I.T. and Danny Brown. The album also boasts production from Noah “40″ Shebib, Danger Mouse and Hit-Boy, with his mixtape collaborator Clams Casino. The album is backed off of single “Fuckin’ Problems.”

With a wide-open week of January underway, this album may hold its spot for an encore.

Sho Baraka’s Talented 10th Knows How To Sell Chapters

116 Clique alum Sho Baraka‘s third studio album, Talented 10th scored the Alberta, Canada-born Christian Rap star a #94 debut. The effort marks Baraka’s first album without Reach Records, where he found success on 2007′s Turn My Life Up and especially 2010′s Lions Liars – a project he would subsequently name his label after.

Talented 10th is broken into chapters (as songs), with “Chapter 9: Jim Crow” being the break-out single.

[News] T.I. Reportedly Shopping $75 Million Record Deal

T.I. is allegedly a free agent after completing a 10-year contract with Atlantic Records.

T.I. has reportedly completed his 10-year contract with Atlantic Records and is making the rounds to shop a $75 million record deal.

According to TMZ, Tip is currently in talks with record labels to sign the deal. As part of the package, the King of the South promises three albums; 10-20 percent of publishing, touring, merchandise, film and TV rights; corporate endorsement deals; and exclusive signing of all Grand Hustle artists.

The rapper has already met with the likes of Dr. Dre and Jay-Z, who respectively want to sign him to Interscope and Roc Nation. Sony has reportedly offered him a $50 million deal, while Universal is meeting with him later this week to discuss having him come to the imprint.

Under Atlantic, T.I. put out seven LPs excluding his 2001 debut I’m Serious, which released via Arista. He most recently dropped Trouble Man: Heavy is the Head which bowed at No. 2 with 179,000 copies sold.

2 Chainz truly gets his gold album in “Based On A T.R.U. Story” while Chief Keef is breathing down his first six-figures in album sales.

In the second week of 2013, no new Hip Hop additions cracked the Top 200. However, a shuffle took place in the rankings, with T.I. re-claiming the top spot with his Trouble Man. Additionally, one major label vet hit a powerful point in his promotion, while an artist 18 years younger is on the cusp of his first six-figure achievement in sales.

Next week’s appearance of A$AP Rocky’s LongLiveA$AP may bid for a #1 spot and inevitably shake things up, as this week remains the last true carry-over from 2012.

2 Chainz’ Based On A T.R.U. Story Eclipses Gold 500,000 Sales Mark

Arguably the biggest Def Jam Records star of 2012, 2 Chainz has finally reached the gold benchmark with his solo debut, Based On A T.R.U. Story. Released in August, the 25 year-old G.O.O.D Music affiliate’s break-out since Playaz Circle featured Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne as well as Scarface. Production was divided between The-Dream, Mike WiLL Made It, 40, Mike Posner and others. The album reached gold in 22 weeks.

Chief Keef’s Finally Rich Nearly Reaches 100,000 In Sales

Chicago street sensation Chief Keef is breathing down a benchmark of his own with his studio debut, Finally Rich. The Interscope Records-backed teen star still maintained a Top 50 appearance after four weeks on the chart. The Glory Boys Entertainment artist’s album is extensively produced by Young Chop, with appearances by Interscope label-mates (and current nemeses) 50 Cent and French Montana, along with Rick Ross.

Psy, Fun., Carly Rae Jepsen: Will They Do A 2013 Encore?

Sometimes success — massive success — is both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, you move millions of digital songs, land the catchiest single of the year, put up ridiculous YouTube numbers or score the buzziest debut in years.

But with great accomplishment comes great pressure to follow those feats up with even greater ones. Such is the dilemma facing some of 2012′s biggest break-out stars: Psy, Carly Rae Jepsen, Fun., Gotye and Frank Ocean.

We asked a panel of experts to suggest what these stars should/could do for an encore in 2013.

Psy
aaba3 140x105 Psy, Fun., Carly Rae Jepsen: Will They Do A 2013 Encore?
The South Korean sensation and 1 billion-YouTube-view star has already promised to mothball “Gangnam Style” this year and vowed to go it alone on his next effort.

» “What he’s trying to do is get a bunch of cameos on his full length album, which is a smart way to go about it,” said Hollywood Reporter music editor Shirley Halperin. With a strong management team led by Justin Bieber‘s main man, Scooter Braun, Halperin said Psy has a chance of landing a successful album.

» Entertainment Weekly staff writer Kyle Anderson agreed that Psy needs a celebrity co-sign or major duet to advance beyond one-hit wonderdom. “A Bieber remix, something … but I would wait on it, maybe until summer to get some distance from ‘Gangnam,’ ” he said.

» Given how charismatic and funny Psy is and his raft of celebrity fans (Katy Perry, Ellen DeGeneres), Rolling Stone associate editor Simon Vozick-Levinson agreed that the singer needs to cash in his good will chips to avoid “Macarena”-ville.

Carly Rae Jepsen
aaba3 140x105 Psy, Fun., Carly Rae Jepsen: Will They Do A 2013 Encore?
Having the catchiest song of the year with your first single is a burden. But Bieber protégé Jepsen is looking to build on a stellar 2012 with, well more of the same. “2012 was so far the biggest year of my life and it think it taught me to expect the unexpected,” Jepsen told MTV News. “I have no plans for 2013 other than to just keep doing what I’m doing… work hard at the songwriting side of things and cross my fingers.”

» Though it lacked another “Maybe,” Vozick-Levinson liked Jepsen’s album and said she should focus on her songwriting chops as long as it takes to craft another piece of ear candy.

» “There may be an awareness in that camp that she doesn’t have another huge hit, so they could go grassroots and pretend she’s a new artist,” said Anderson, who thought Jepsen is in a good position to have a long, solid career if she doesn’t try too hard to pull another “Maybe.” He also suggested she could have a solid second act as a song doctor for singers like Pink and Kelly Clarkson while continuing to do her own thing.

» “She really hasn’t been able to transcend the song and some people [never do],” Halperin said. “Sometimes the song is bigger than the artist.” Of all the acts, she thought the biggest pressure might be on Jepsen to come up with another big hit, especially since she doesn’t have the swagger or personality of a pop star like Rihanna, but clearly wants to be in that world.

Frank Ocean
aaba3 140x105 Psy, Fun., Carly Rae Jepsen: Will They Do A 2013 Encore?
Between the critical praise for his major-label debut, Channel Orange, six Grammy nominations and studio sessions with everyone from Jay-Z and Beyoncé to Alicia Keys and Pharrell, the Odd Future crooner might have trouble matching the magic of the past 12 months.

» A spokesperson for Ocean told MTV News there was no information on what was next for him, but Halperin said FO has the least amount of pressure of all the big 2012 acts. “He doesn’t follow the normal album promotion path, he hasn’t done many interviews… but he’s got this critical mass thing going,” she said. Even without a massive hit single, Ocean can pretty much write his own ticket and Halperin is excited to see what direction he goes.

» Vozick-Levinson agreed that Ocean has the best long-term prospects of all the acts, thanks to his level of respect with critics, fans and other artists. “It’s in his favor that he’s not a flash-in-the-pan and didn’t yield an immediate hit single,” he said. “He’s incredibly imaginative, unique and a talented songwriter and he just needs to keep doing what he’s doing, write another album and not rush it.”

Fun.
2d8ed 140x105 Psy, Fun., Carly Rae Jepsen: Will They Do A 2013 Encore?
One hit single is great. But trio Fun. managed to follow up the gigantic Some Nights smashes “We Are Young” and the title track with the current hit-in-the-making single, “Carry On.” They are on the road for the next two months, then head overseas in March and April, with more U.S. dates this summer and a new track, “Sight of the Sun” on the “Girls” soundtrack, which is out next week. Oh, and they were nominated for six Grammys, including all four of the Big Four.

» “They’re light-years ahead of these others,” said Anderson. “For them, the goal this year should be to figure out what they want to be and how they want to be known going forward.”

» Thanks to singer Nate Ruess‘ proven songwriting chops on songs by Pink and Ke$ha, Vozick-Levinson said as long as he doesn’t give away his best bits to others the band is well set-up for a long, successful career.

» The Grammy spotlight will provide another burst of attention, and Halperin predicted, another sales bump for the album. Along with the “Girls” tune and budding hit “Carry On,” Halperin said the band could easily have an Adele-like slow-burn success that will bleed into this year and keep them rolling through all of 2013.

Gotye
2d8ed 140x105 Psy, Fun., Carly Rae Jepsen: Will They Do A 2013 Encore?
The Grammy-nominated Australian pop singer continued to enchant all last year with his finger-snapping 350-million YouTube view smash, “Somebody That I Used to Know.”
He started 2013 early by getting sampled
by T.I. on the rapper’s new Trouble Man album, but a spokesperson said that after a whirlwind year, Wally De Backer is taking some time off this year to work on writing his fourth album.

» It might be hard for Gotye to follow up the success of “Somebody” because, as anyone who’s listened to the album knows, it’s not indicative of the Sting-like adult contemporary nature of the disc. “It’s the classic case of, ‘Why would I buy the album if I only like the one song?’ ” Halperin said.

» Vozick-Levinson isn’t so sure De Backer was even looking for that kind of crossover pop success and suspected he might happily go back to making his idiosyncratic tunes to a much smaller audience.

[News] The Hip Hop Week In Review: HipHopDX Year End Awards, T.I. Drops "Trouble Man"

HipHopDX awarded artists including Kendrick Lamar and Nas, while T.I. dropped off his latest album “Trouble Man” and Chief Keef unleashed his debut “Finally Rich.”

As the year comes to a close, HipHopDX spent the week rolling out its Year End Awards, naming everything from Slept-On Album of the Year and Emcee of the Year to Video of the Year and Album of the Year. Meanwhile, T.I. dropped off his latest album Trouble Man: Heavy is the Head, discussing gun control and confirming that the track “Addresses” is a diss. But Tip wasn’t the only one to unleash a new LP this week. Months after cracking into the mainstream, Chief Keef released his debut album Finally Rich, which one blogger controversially deemed “a minstrel show.”

HipHopDX Picks Kendrick Lamar, Nas Joey Bada$$ For Year End Awards

Like clockwork, HipHopDX closed out 2012 with its annual Year End Awards. After having a breakout year with his major label debut good kid, m.A.A.d city (recently certified gold), Kendrick Lamar got top honors with a handful of awards including Emcee of the Year, Album of the Year and Reader’s Choice Album of the Year. Nas got a hat-tip for his excellent video for “Daughters,” with runner-ups including Danny Brown’s “Grown Up” and Killer Mike’s “Big Beast.” Apollo Brown O.C. scored Slept-On Album of the Year for Trophies, while Joey Bada$$ nabbed Rising Star of the Year. Head over to the Year End Awards to scope out the other winners.

T.I. Releases Trouble Man: Heavy is the Head, Addresses Cover Art Controversy

After a few delays, T.I. finally released his new album Trouble Man: Heavy is the Head earlier this week. The Grand Hustle honcho is slated to sell a healthy number of copies in his first week, with projections hovering between 150,000 and 175,000 copies. Confirming that the song “Addresses” is a diss track, Tip spoke on gun control policies and being declared a “snitch,” also giving an interview where he explained the meaning of the album title. The self-proclaimed King of the South doted on signing Meek Mill to Grand Hustle back in the day, said that Jay-Z was supposed to be on the LP and that others “can’t do what I do.” Stream Trouble Man here.

Chief Keef Drops Finally Rich, Blogger Calls It A “Minstrel Show”

Months after breaking out with his viral hit “I Don’t Like” and signing to Interscope Records, teen rapper Chief Keef dropped his debut album Finally Rich. HipHopDX rated the album as average, stating that he created “entertainment out of hopelessness.” But Keef is known equally for controversy, stirring up some issues throughout release week. An NBC blogger described the LP as “a minstrel show,” while police targeted suspects who were putting up posters advertising the album in Chicago, Illinois. And lucky for Keef, he bought some time as his probation hearing was pushed back to January.

[News] The Top 10 Most Popular Hip Hop Singles The Week Of 12/17/2012

A$AP Rocky brings six friends with him to craft the ultimate posse cut, and that hit straight to the top of the singles list.

This will be the last weekly Top Singles for 2012, and what a week it has been. Next week, you’ll see our tally of the Top Singles of 2012, and that list has a few surprises for you. Be sure to check it out. This week, though, our winner is A$AP Rocky, and it should be noted that his single “1 Train” did almost three times as a well as the #2 track. That means quite a few people checked it out. There’s more to this list though, so on with the show.

A$AP Rocky Is All About the Posse Cut

For the internet pirates out there, it’s no surprise that A$AP Rocky’s LongLiveA$AP leaked. As A$AP Rocky’s manager A$AP Yams tweeted, “If you like it, buy it.” On the album is the super duper posse cut titled “1 Train.” We’ve heard there was going to be a massive cut happening on A$AP’s debut, but who knew it would be a 7-emcee party? Kendrick Lamar, Joey Bada$$, Yelawolf, Danny Brown, Action Bronson, and Big K.R.I.T. all showed up to spit some thorough bars. That made it to #1. A$AP brought another stellar posse cut in at #8 with “Purple Swag Remix” featuring the likes of Bun B, Paul Wall, and Killa Kyleon.

Kendrick Lamar Accidentally Had a Big Week

Sure, Kendrick Lamar was a part of the #1 track this week, but he also showed up a few more times. Kendrick made it to the #2 track off T.I.’s Trouble Man titled “Memories Back Then,” with B.o.B. and Kris Stephens. He then popped up on Dido’s “Let Us Move On” which made it to the #4 spot. So, Kendrick was a Top Singles favorite this week without actually having to release a song. The aforementioned T.I. had a good week too. In addition to the #2 slot, Tip had “Addresses” at #5 and the return of “Sorry” with Andre 3000 in this week at #9.

[News] T.I. Explains Meaning Behind "Trouble Man" Album Title

T.I. explains what Marvin Gaye has to do with his album title.

During a visit to BET‘s “106 Park,” T.I. spoke about the title of his latest project, Trouble Man.

Tip was asked about titling his album the same name as that of a Marvin Gaye song. “I felt like at that moment in time, Marvin Gaye‘s life embodied what the word ‘Trouble Man‘ and what the song meant in all senses of the word,” he explained. “And today… I feel like the past six, seven years of my life, and the adversity…in my life that I have endured and overcame, that is synonymous and it embodies what the word ‘Trouble Man‘ means today.”

Marvin Gaye did it for them back then, and I’m doing it for us right now,” added Tip. ”Nothing but love and respect, and nothing but salutations and respect to Marvin Gaye and his whole family.”

T.I. also spoke on the feel of the album. “It has a more balanced blend of that vintage ‘You Don’t Know Me,’ ‘Top Back,’ Trap Muzik sound with some of the more mainstream radio records that you heard from Paper Trail.” said T.I. “It’s more of a cohesive blend.
