‘Evil Dead’: How Does The Remake Stack Up?

Evil Dead: How Does The Remake Stack Up?

By Ryan Rigley

“Halloween,” “Friday the 13th, “A Nightmare of Elm Street.” There have been a number of horror movie remakes in recent years, taking classic horror films from the 70′s and 80′s and turning them into modern day massacres. Ranging everywhere from “The Wolfman” to “Fright Night,” these remakes either come across as really awesome or really unnecessary. I mean, hell, most of these horror films were only made about twenty years ago.

The latest, and perhaps most anticipated, horror remake to grace the silver screen with its senseless gore and violence is Fede Alvarez’ “Evil Dead.” Produced by both Sam Raimi (the original director) and
Bruce Campbell (the original star), “Evil Dead” looks to be different enough for first-time viewers and gruesome enough for diehard fans. So did “Evil Dead” live up to the hype?

The Original
In Sam Raimi‘s original cult classic, five college students decide to spend their Spring Break in a remote cabin in the Tennessee woods. Not long after settling in, the young, hapless victims happen upon the
Sumerian “Book of the Dead” and a tape recorder that plays an evil incantation unleashing the wrath of the Candarian demons. Ash Williams, as played by Bruce Campbell, is then forced to murder all of his companions as they each fall victim to demonic possession.

Despite the film’s micro-budget, the original “Evil Dead” manages to terrify and/or nauseate audiences of all ages. From dismemberment to tree rape, Raimi’s first masterpiece is as cringe-worthy as intended and as shocking as its cult status implies.

The Remake
Fede Alvarez’ re-imagined horror classic sees five friends traveling to an isolated cabin with the intentions of helping their friend (Mia) get over her dangerous drug addiction cold turkey. However, their rehabilitation plans fall off course once the gang discovers a mysterious spellbook bound in human flesh. Reading a spell from the “Book of the Dead” aloud, the five friends accidentally summon an ancient evil that plagues the burial ground on which the cabin was built.

This “Evil Dead” remake is chock-full of blood, guts, bloody guts, tree rape, and dismemberment. In fact, I’d say it’s safe to assume that there is at least ten times more gore in this version than the original (and five times more than in “Evil Dead 2″). Also, while the story is completely different from that of the original, the film is chock full of subtle references and Easter eggs alluding to its 1981 counterpart.

The Verdict
With a different (but similar) story and a butt-load of gory practical effects, the “Evil Dead” remake is absolutely worth the price of admission. If you’re a long-time fan of the original, the new “Evil Dead” takes that same “shock till you drop” sensibility from the original and amps it up tenfold resulting in a film that, at times, makes you want to scream and vomit at the same time.

If you’ve never seen the original “Evil Dead,” I guarantee you’ll be pleasantly surprised with how disturbing this new take is. The classic “Evil Dead” staples are all still there (i.e. the tree rape and severing of one’s own arm), just produced on a much bigger budget. And believe you me, this remake does not shy away from the gore. I cannot stress that enough. Anyway, go see this movie or I’ll swallow your soul.

Seven Things You Didn’t Know About ‘Jurassic Park’

281x211 Seven Things You Didnt Know About Jurassic Park

By Tara Fowler

One of my earliest memories is going to see “Jurassic Park” with my father (my parents didn’t believe in little things called “ratings restrictions”). I don’t remember much of the actual movie from the T. rex attack on because I spent it with my arms wrapped around my dad’s neck staring at the back of the theater.

And yet, despite traumatizing my 4-year-old self, “Jurassic Park” has since managed to become one of my favorite movies (and books) of all time. In honor of this weekend’s 3D re-release, I’ve cobbled together seven facts about the film. Read on, dinosaur aficionados!

1) It owes its existence to “ER”: Director Steven Spielberg was initially working with “Jurassic Park” author Michael Crichton to develop a film version of what would later become “ER” when he heard about Crichton’s dino-park horror show novel and decided to make that instead. But Spielberg did help Crichton get the TV version of “ER” off the ground afterwards (off the ground might be a bit of an understatement — the show ran for 15 seasons).

2) Spielberg hired Stan Winston to build the full-size mechanical dinosaurs based on his work on the alien queen in “Aliens”: “Steven figured that if we could build a fourteen-foot-tall alien queen, we’d be able to build a twenty-foot-tall T. rex,” Winston said at the time. Unfortunately that was a naïve assumption. “The queen was exoskeletal, so all of its surfaces were hard,” Winston explained. “There were no muscles, no flesh, and there was no real weight to it. The alien queen also didn’t have to look like a real, organic animal because it was a fictional character — so there was nothing in real life to compare it to.” But, Winston signed onto the project anyways despite the fact that he didn’t have a clue how he would build a full-size dinosaur. It was just too great an opportunity to pass up. For more on how he and his team assembled the T. rex, check out this video.

3) The obnoxious kid in the beginning was right: At the beginning of the movie, a kid quips that the velociraptor looks more like a “six-foot turkey.” Alas, he was actually correct. The velociraptor was only the size of a large chicken, and the version seen in “Jurassic Park” was really modeled after a larger raptor known as Deinonychus. But who knows what a Deinonychus is?

4) After the crew got trapped on Kauai due to a hurricane, they were rescued by the pilot from “Raiders of the Lost Ark”: Seriously. Fred Sorenson not only flew the “Jurassic Park” crew to safety; he also rescued Indiana Jones years before as the pilot Jock in the opening scene of “Raiders.”

5) Ian Malcolm’s moves totally worked on Ellie Sattler: You know that scene where Ian explains chaos theory to Ellie by essentially fondling her hand? Well, take note guys because Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern ended up dating afterwards and eventually got engaged before breaking up. I like to think the allure comes from this painting.

Seven Things You Didnt Know About Jurassic Park

6) Sandra Bullock could have been your Ellie Sattler: And Christina Ricci auditioned for Lex. The role of Alan Grant was offered to William Hurt and Harrison Ford, who both turned it down, while Dylan McDermott and Tom Sizemore tested for the part before it ultimately went to Sam Neill. Sean Connery was wanted for John Hammond.

7) You can’t actually bring dinosaurs back: So this seems fairly self-explanatory, but I can’t be the only one who thought that explanation about the amber and the mosquitos sounded somewhat plausible. But as Berkeley explains, it’s almost impossible to find intact DNA (even if it is encased in amber). Let’s say we did — we’d still have to assemble the DNA into chromosomes, then plant it in an intact dinosaur egg, and finally incubate it under the optimal conditions for that — Whatever, Berkeley. Thanks for raining on our parade.

I leave you with this heavy metal cover of the Jurassic Park theme

Will you be seeing Jurassic Park 3D this weekend?

‘Catching Fire’ Arena To Be Shot In IMAX

While many of us are still nursing a turkey hangover, the cast and crew of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” will be working off their Thanksgiving calories running through the jungles of Hawaii, filming scenes for the sequel’s 75th annual Hunger Games — otherwise known as the Quarter Quell in Suzanne Collins‘ best-selling novel.

And when star Lionsgate announced in June that the follow-up would feature scenes filmed specifically for the big big screens, though did not divulge specifics.

“They’re shooting, I think, all the stuff in the arena is going to be IMAX,” Hutcherson said. “So when you go see it in IMAX, you’ll see the regular movie when we’re in the Districts and in the Capitol. When you see us go up in the pod in the games, it will open up into IMAX. It will be amazing. It’s very cool.”

Josh Hutcherson Splits Pants Filming Intimate ‘Catching Fire’ Scene

Spoilers ahead if you have not read “Catching Fire.”

In between mouthfuls of tender turkey and sweet potato casserole, MTV News took the time last week to reflect upon a few of the movies we were thankful for in 2012, and it should come as no surprise that the big-screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins‘ best-selling “Hunger Games” was among the chosen. As such, star Josh Hutcherson, who plays baker boy Peeta Mellark, stopped by our studios to share his own thankful list (“Gigolos”?), as well as reveal a few details about the in-production follow-up, “Catching Fire.”

Among the many moments fans are surely craving is Peeta’s proposal to Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) in front of the bright lights of Caesar Flickerman‘s cameras. But for Hutcherson, the highly anticipated scene didn’t quite go as planned.

“I have proposed to Katniss,” Hutcherson confirmed. “It was good. Actually, funny story: When we shot it, the actual proposal itself is done where you don’t hear what we’re saying, so I was just saying gibberish while I was proposing to her on one knee. Actually, the very first time I went to get down on one knee my pants ripped right down the crotch. The worst thing that could happen when you’re proposing to somebody is that your pants rip right down the crotch, and that’s what happened to Peeta. So… he’s doomed. He’s doomed. Poor guy, he just can’t catch a break.”

Thankfully, the pants predicament seems to be the worst the actor has weathered while filming. In fact, when asked which scenes were his favorite to film so far, Hutcherson was quick with one pivotal moment in particular:

“The Reaping stuff was really great. The Reaping stuff we did was really powerful, really well written,” he recalled. “The extras were so awesome. Like, literally, every extra was a very, very talented actor, and so in the really emotional scenes, all the background really brought their A-game. It really added a lot. That was really cool to see that all come together.”

Next up, the cast will fly to Hawaii to film the tropically-inclined Quarter Quell.

“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” lights up theaters on November 22, 2013.

‘X Factor’ Results Leave Two Singers Not So Thankful

At least they have Thanksgiving leftovers waiting for them at home!

On Thursday’s “X Factor” results show, two members of Britney Spears‘ team were sent home before the turkey had even cooled down. Arin Ray was the first victim of the double-elimination episode, while Beatrice Miller went head-to-head with CeCe Frey before following her teammate out the door.

“I think you should just take this as a learning experience,” Spears told Ray when he got the boot. “This isn’t the last time we’re going to hear from you.”

Unlike Ray, Frey and Miller had the opportunity to sing for their lives when they were revealed as the other pair in this week’s bottom three. Demi Lovato‘s group member Frey has been in the bottom before, so she came out kicking and screaming with Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You.” Britney’s mentee, however, let the tears flow during her emotional performance of Dido’s “White Flag.”

When the vote went to the judges, Spears and Lovato obviously stuck with their contestants, so it was in L.A. Reid and Simon Cowell‘s hands — and they both opted to send the 13-year-old Miller packing. Cowell even pointed to Miller’s uncontrollable tears as the reason he opted to send her home, saying she just wasn’t ready.

“Sweetheart, you are so young and you have so far to go, and this is just the beginning for you,” Spears told the sobbing singer. “The song you sang tonight was excruciatingly hard, and you’re a true star in my eyes and you always will be.”

Miller had dedicated her performance the night before to her younger sisters, and she was thinking about them after she got the bad news: “I just want to tell my sisters that I love them and I want to say I’m sorry.”

Cher Lloyd made a triumphant return to the world of “X Factor,” performing her new single “Oath” with fellow femcee Becky G. The U.K.-bred pop star hit the stage in a yellow sequined tuxedo shirt with fringed snakeskin shorts and brought her spitfire spirit and high-energy choreography to the results show. Though Lloyd finished in fourth place on the seventh season of the U.K. “X Factor,” she’s found success since the show, including the U.S. radio hit “Want U Back.”

Since the show first revealed the full leaderboard two weeks ago, country singer Tate Stevens has held the top spot, but this week saw the first shakeup, with Carly Rose Sonenclar moving to #1. Here’s how America’s vote shook out:

1. Carly Rose Sonenclar
2. Tate Stevens
3. Vino Alan
4. Emblem 3
5. Diamond White
6. Paige Thomas
7. Fifth Harmony
8. CeCe Frey

‘Evil Dead’ Trailer: Five Callbacks To The Original

It should be said upfront that the first footage from Fede Alvarez’s “Evil Dead” remake is extremely graphic and outrageously NSFW. That information will either dissuade you from watching it or reinforce everything that you’re hoping to hear from this redo of Sam Raimi‘s classic.

When MTV News spoke with star-turned-producer Bruce Campbell, he gave us fair warning. “We’re going to have ratings problems out the butt,” he said at New York Comic Con, where the footage first debuted. “We have a screening coming up later this month, and I’m like, ‘Good luck, Chuck!’ “

Now that we’ve had some time to digest — forgive the word choice — the first red-band trailer, we noticed at least five nice callbacks to the original.

Moving Through the Tree
Perhaps the most iconic image from the low-budget original features the evil spirits that haunt the unfortunate campers moving through the woods in a series of point-of-view shots. If you’re remaking “Evil Dead” and you want to communicate to fans that this movie will not completely ignore the memory of the original, this is how you do it.

Necronomicon
While, we are by no means surprised to see the book of the dead make an appearance in the “Evil Dead” trailer, we are comforted by the sight of it in a weird way. The Necronomicon is the impetus for all of the evil shenanigans that happen after one of the campers reads a passage aloud. If one relic from the original had to make its way into the remake, this is it. The Necronomicon is kind of the whole point of the movie.

Arm Removal
This little piece of gore hails back to “The Evil Dead 2,” but a key element of the series’ lore is the scene where Ash, played by Campbell, removes his own possessed hand with a chainsaw. In the trailer for the remake, we see a play on that motif that subs in an electric turkey carver, which, while more low-fi, looks just as effective.

Chainsaw
There’s a natural connection built into the mind of any “Evil Dead” fan. In a game of word association, “arm removal” is quickly followed by “chainsaw.” While we don’t see anyone strapping a chainsaw onto one of his or her appendages, there is certainly a chainsaw and some splashing gore to go with it.

Tree Rape
When news of an “Evil Dead” remake surfaced, this scene seemed like the most likely to not make the jump to the 21st century. It is just too extreme, fans all said. Modern movie-going audiences couldn’t handle it. There is no way the studio would allow such a scene. Well, guess what. Not only is that scene in the film, it’s in the freaking trailer.

Evil Dead” opens on April 12 and stars Jane Levy and Shiloh Fernandez.

Presidential Debate: What Would You Ask The Candidates?

HEMPSTEAD, New York — Fewer than 300 Hofstra University students scored lucky golden tickets to Tuesday (October 16) night’s second presidential debate.
But that didn’t mean the ones who were shut out didn’t have plenty of hard questions for President Obama and challenger Mitt Romney.

MTV News’ Power of 12 spoke to a number of underclassmen who will be watching the townhall debate on TV and we asked them: What are you expecting from the candidates, and what would you ask if given the chance?

“As a college student my biggest problem is getting a job in the next three or four years, so I really want a president who’s going to help me get a job,” said Ashley Mungiguerra, a journalism/French major from Dallas, Texas. “I know that they can’t fix the economy in four years because that’s just not reasonable. But I want somebody who can improve us as a country.”

And with the daily headlines about violence in Syria and Turkey and the rising death toll in Iraq and Afghanistan she’d also like to hear Obama and Romney talk about their plans to deal with turmoil in the Middle East.

Dion Pierre, 18, a political science major and first-time voter from Queens, New York, said he expects Obama to come out more aggressively given the criticism the president got for being too lax in the first debate. “But I’m also really hoping that Mitt Romney will excel in this format,” he said of his preferred candidate. “I think he’s a very approachable guy, unlike what the media has portrayed [and] he cares about the middle class.”

Broadcast journalism freshman Michael Fuller said he’d like to hear both men talk about the pressing college concern of student financial aid, as well as how they plan to turn around the country’s high unemployment rate.

“I think it was a very strategic move on Obama’s part to be laid-back,” said journalism major Sidney Madden, 21, putting a positive spin on what was widely derided as a lackluster showing by the president. “Now it has more excitement building up to the second debate. He’ll have an element of surprise and I think he’ll really rev up not only his political base, but the undecided. They’ll see the reignition of classic Obama.”

After what some critics said were short-on-details economic plans put forward by Romney and running mate Rep. Paul Ryan in the first two debates, Madden said she’s looking for hard numbers. “I really want to hear specific platforms,” she said. “I want to hear details. I’m not into overviews or political statements. I want to hear details about how it will change or how it will stay the same.”

The range of issues the students wanted addressed were wide in scope. English major Allison Kamin, 19, has been focused on gun control in light of the raft of school shootings and the movie theater rampage in Colorado earlier this year, while public relations major Rachel E. Peace, 20, said she needs some details on health care and the national debt.

“We didn’t help create it and we’re going to come out of school to an economy where there aren’t a lot of jobs and then not only be paying off our own school debts, but a national debt that we didn’t help create,” said Peace.

‘Skyfall’ Featurette Visits The Movie’s Many Locations

Skyfall Featurette Visits The Movies Many Locations

In “Skyfall,” much of the action comes home for James Bond. A new videoblog from the set of the movie details how the production has been impacted by the fact that the latest 007 project takes place in London.

Michael Lerman, the first assistant director on “Skyfall,” narrates the new featurette about the various locations in the film. He talks about some of the places throughout Great Britain‘s capital that we’ll see Bond travel.

“On this movie compared to the last one we have so many more locations actually here in London,” he said. “We are shooting in the Underground, on main streets, down Whitehall we have a big action sequence — just some really exciting places that we’re looking forward to shooting.”

But this wouldn’t be a good James Bond movie without travel to other exciting locations. As we’ve seen in the trailer for the film, Bond has to venture to China and Turkey to try to resolve the crisis introduced in “Skyfall.”

“Beyond London, we have Shanghai ,which is a really special city,” Lerman explained. “It has such a great skyline and we really enjoyed our time scouting there. It’s a really exotic Bond location.”

He continued, “And then we have Turkey. We have a large opening sequence which involves a big car chase which then evolves into a shootout which then evolves into a motorcycle sequence where we’re going down alleys through a spice market, up onto the rooftop, into a market bazaar and then in evolves into this big train sequence, so you can imagine the logistics of shooting a sequence involving so many vehicles.”

“Skyfall” hits theaters on November 9.

Comic-Con 2012: What We And The Movie Blogosphere Can’t Wait To See

eb9b0 got comic con Comic Con 2012: What We And The Movie Blogosphere Cant Wait To See

Comic-Con 2012 is rapidly approaching, and you know what that means: wish lists! Everyone on the MTV Movies team is pumped for a whole host of panels and events this year, but if I’m being honest, it’s not the big screen that has me most excited. I’m keeping my eye firmly on the television panels, where “Fringe” will have its last-ever Comic-Con presence; “Game of Thrones” will tease us for season three in all of its gut-wrenching glory; and, if we’re all good little boys and girls, we’ll get a taste of the sweet blue stuff that is “Breaking Bad.” (If that panel shows even an iota of the season five premiere’s cold open, I guarantee that people will go up in smoke quicker than Tuco Salamanca’s drug den.)

But that’s just what I’m looking forward to at Comic-Con this year. Keep reading to find out what all of our friends in the blogosphere can’t wait for!

» Katey Rich is the Editor-in-Chief of Cinema Blend, and she and her mighty team of five are excited to be covering Comic Con with more man (and woman) power than ever before. More than anything Katey is excited to catch the panel for Neill Blomkamp‘s Elysium, because it’s something she knows the least about, and therefore has the most potential to be an awesome surprise.

» Kristal Bailey returns to Comic Con for the 7th time and couldn’t be more excited! Each year provides new surprises, big news and this looks to be like no exception. She and Brian Rudloff, the amazing duo from Screen Invasion, are most looking forward to the Community panel and the rest of the TV slate coming to SD. With The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and True Blood all having major panels, geek TV is going strong. The movie front is shaping up nicely too, with highlights including Iron Man 3, Dredd, and Pacific Rim.

» Jim Littler from ComicBookMovie.com had it easy when picking out his highlights, saying, “It’s a no-brainer what we’ll be interested in seeing at Comic-Con this year… All the Comic Book Movie oriented panels–with a particular interest in Disney’s/Marvel’s IRON MAN 3 and THOR 2 offerings, as well as MAN OF STEEL?!! Plus, a personal favorite is THE VENTURE BROS.”

» Rob Keyes from Screen Rant is anxious to see the year’s two biggest panels happening on Saturday in Hall H where we all hope to get our first real look at Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Those two films combined with The Hobbit and a potential presentation about Godzilla make that the panel to be at. On the Disney/Marvel side, the Iron Man 3 presentation also has a chance to steal the show if President Kevin Feige comes prepared to lay down major announcements regarding “Phase 2″ of the Marvel cinematic universe. Bring us some Ant-Man, Black Panther and Guardians of the Galaxy!

» Matt Patches at Hollywood.com can’t decide if he’s more excited for Sony’s Elysium panel or Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra panel. He’s been waiting patiently for any look at director Neill Blomkamp‘s long-awaited District 9 follow-up that’s not bald Matt Damon standing around on set, and really, who doesn’t want a taste of epic sci-fi at Comic-Con? But going cold turkey on Legend of Korra post-season one finale…well, the panel may be the fix he needs to survive.

» This year at SDCC, the io9 team is excited to see that fantasy is pretty much ruling the con. With The Hobbit coming up, and Game of Thrones still going strong, there’s no doubt that this is the year of foam swords and armor in San Diego. We’re psyched for the original science fiction too — we’ll be checking out Guillermo Del Toro’s giant monsters in Pacific Rim, getting the latest on the superintelligent computer in Person of Interest, and visiting a post-apocalyptic world with no computers at all with Eric Kripke’s new series Revolution. We’ll be covering everything from comics and movies, to books and TV, so keep your eyes on io9 at SDCC 2012!

» Kevin Polowy, NextMovie and Film.com editor and resident DJ, is eager to trek to 2012 Comic-Con to see how Martin Freeman and friends measure up to Hobbits past (get it? Short joke), hear how many times Quentin Tarantino uses the word “awesome” over the course of the one-hour “Django Unchained” panel (over/under: 16), and once again gorge on those disgustingly delicious Mexican eggrolls at that one place on 1st Ave (Mexican eggrolls!).

» ComingSoon.net and SuperHeroHype‘s Edward Douglas is looking forward to the entire Warner Bros. panel, since we’ve seen absolutely nothing from Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and very little from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim, two of what should be the coolest movies of next summer. Likewise, the Marvel panel is always hopping and even though they’ve only been shooting a few weeks on Iron Man 3, they rarely disappoint and I expect them to show some cool stuff from the movie, much like they did with Captain America two years ago. Oh, and we’ll finally get confirmation on that May 2014 movie so we can all stop guessing and making stuff up. Also looking forward to talking to lots of filmmakers/actors since interviewing is my schtick at Comic-Con.

» The ScreenCrush.com team is excited to see footage from ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘Iron Man 3′ for sure, but the one panel we won’t miss is for ‘Django Unchained.’ Watching Quentin Tarantino work the Hall H crowd will be worth the price of admission alone! And maybe he’ll bring some special guests along with him…

» Alex Billington also returns to cover Comic-Con 2012 at FirstShowing.net. Alex is looking forward to the panels on Saturday the most, specifically Warner Bros‘ panel for The Hobbit and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. There’s also Quentin Tarantino bringing Django Unchained on Saturday, which should be very fun. He’s mostly excited to see how the Hall H crowds react to these presentations, and hear the responses after.

» This year, the Film School Rejects will be hiding in the bathroom stalls so that we can be the first in Hall H to check out everything from Frankenweenie to the Batmobile. We’ll be ironically wearing Team Bella t-shirts (except for Brian) as we bring news from Jackie Chan’s production company, ParaNorman, Disney, Game of Thrones, Disney’s Game of Thrones and the science fiction of Total Recall and Looper. While Fure rubs his own chest to the Expendables 2 footage (and reports back), Brian will be writing about his experiences as a first-timer, and we’ll collectively make sure that you, dear reader, feel like you are at the Con yourself. Dressing up like your favorite comic book character is on you though. We can’t be held responsible for clothing you.

» Don Kaye, lead writer at MSN’s Parallel Universe, is split between two things that he wants to see the most: “On the one hand, I am really looking forward to the Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures panel, because I can’t wait to get a first look at footage from Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Both have been shrouded in mystery until now. We’re apparently also going to get a peek at Legendary’s take on Godzilla. But at the same time, I am super-excited about seeing the Sony presentation on Elysium. I loved District 9 and can’t wait to see what Neill Blomkamp has done for his follow-up. If anyone can come up with the big sci-fi movie with big ideas (the one we didn’t get this year), it might be him.”

» This year the gang at Movies.com is planning to load up their Comic-Con page with as many interviews, panel reports, footage reviews, podcasts, and, most importantly, costume galleries as biologically possible. It’ll be like you’re at comic-con, minus the huge crowds and Slave Leia dance contests.

» Matt Goldberg is going to be at Comic-Con covering Hall H for Collider.com. “I’m jazzed to see Django Unchained and Iron Man 3, but not so much because of the footage since that will all be released in due time. I’m more excited to see Quentin Tarantino and Robert Downey Jr. since big personalities on the Hall H stage always makes for a good time,” he says. He adds he’s “also eager to see what surprises various presentations may have in store.”

Will Ferrell Announces ‘Anchorman 2′

Ferrell, appearing as leisure-suit wearing newsman Ron Burgundy, broke the news while making a surprise appearance on the “Conan” show that thrilled the audience. Taking the stage in a, yes, burgundy colored suit and wide, striped tie, Ferrell/Burgundy, ripped off a wicked flute solo, then explained to host Conan O’Brien, “I like to keep my chops up, jam with the cats here … smoke a little tea afterwards, see if a little backstage Judy ends up on my lap.”

After complimenting the host on his broadcasting skills, Burgundy shared one small criticism with O’Brien. “You look awful,” he said. “You look like someone put a bright red fright wig on a skeleton and chucked it out of a helicopter.”

But Burgundy wasn’t just there to play the flute and insult his host, he also had an exciting bit of news. “I want to announce this to everyone here in the Americas,” he said. “To my friends, in Spain, Turkey and the U.K., including England … as of 0900 Mountain Time, Paramount Pictures and myself, Ronald Joseph Aaron Burgundy, have come to terms on a sequel for ‘Anchorman.’ It is official, there will be a sequel to ‘Anchorman.’”

And with that, Burgundy played himself off the stage with a second wicked flute solo. Back in early 2010, “Anchorman” director and co-writer Adam McKay
told MTV News that he expected much of the first movie’s cast to come along for the sequel, including Steve Carell and Paul Rudd, as well as Christina Applegate, David Koechner Chris Parnell and Fred Willard.

“We had an idea and we contacted Steve and Paul and Koechner and Christina and checked in with everyone and they were all game for it,” McKay said at the time. “It’s a tricky movie because everyone went and did really well after it, so everyone’s prices went up and everyone’s time got a little more valuable. But at the same time, graciously, Steve and Paul and everyone agreed to cut their price to come and do it, which you don’t see very often in Hollywood — and cut their price substantially.”

The original grossed more than $91 million worldwide. Ferrell and McKay will once again co-write for the sequel and McKay will direct again, with production slated to begin at the end of this year for a 2013 release.
