[News] Angel Haze Ranks Third On BBC’s Sound Of 2013 List

Angel Haze speaks on belonging to a cult and touches on her upcoming debut album.

Angel Haze had a breakout year in 2012, signing to Universal Republic on the strength of her breakout mixtape Reservation and releasing a follow up Classick.

Kicking off the New Year, the Detroit-raised rapstress has ranked third on BBC‘s Sound of 2013 list that also featured The Weeknd, AlunaGeorge, Savages and more.

Speaking with BBC, Angel recalled her religious upbringing, explaining that she was part of a church that can only be described as a “cult.”

“I grew up in a really strict church,” she said. “It was considered a sin to listen to music. I was totally aware of it. I wanted to be into it, but I wasn’t allowed to. And I was actually in a cult. I don’t like to describe it that way too much because the word ‘cult’ just sounds crazy. It was that, but… it was cool. It really altered the way I think and perceive things.”

She also touched on her upcoming debut album and hopes to work with The Weeknd, Frank Ocean and Jason Mraz. “I want people to know that anything is possible,” she says. “That you can come from anywhere in the world, come from the dirtiest of places and go beyond that. There’s nothing that you can’t accomplish. Nothing can stop you.”

[Editorials] The Most Important Free Albums Of 2012

HipHopDX talks the most important free albums of 2012, including Curren$y Harry Fraud’s “Cigarette Boats,” two Action Bronson projects and more.

Over the last few years, Hip Hop artists and their labels have used the free album as an outlet for more creative freedom, litmus test fan interest, and as a free introduction for listeners to develop an understanding of new artists. That new tradition continued in 2012, with established artists and neophytes both using the medium to fight their way into fan consciousness. This year’s collection of top free albums is a good mix: newfound veteran Curren$y teams with a new producer to sharpen his usual formula, and Action Bronson bounces back from a solid rookie year with a pair of the year’s top records that laugh at the idea of a sophomore slump and establish himself as a character who belongs in Rap’s colorful cast. The list also includes two of Rap’s more memorable newcomers from 2012. Nomadic femcee Angel Haze establishes herself as one of the genre’s most distinctive new voices, with an album that is raw in every sense of the word. Flatbush Zombies’ debut fills the decreasing presence of Odd Future and Lil B, incorporating OFWGKTA’s black goth and Based God’s silliness into their own brand of youthful revolt.

Curren$y Harry Fraud – Cigarette Boats

Considering Curren$y’s prolific output, a five-track release appears as a meager offering from the Jet Life head honcho. Thankfully, Cigarette Boats is more of the Spitta that his fans have become accustomed to: slinky, smoke-ready rhymes with subdued production. After his major label debut The Stoned Immaculate strayed from his one-producer formula previously honed with Alchemist and Ski Beatz, he returns to his formula with Harry Fraud, known for his frequent collaborations with French Montana and Smoke DZA. The Brooklyn beatmaker’s assortment of slow-cooking soul samples makes an apt seat-reclining, window-rolling soundtrack for Curren$y first-class flows. The duo doesn’t reinvent the wheel here, and the EP clocks in at less than 15 minutes, but there’s something to be said for consistency and quality control, and Curren$y on cruise control isn’t a bad thing.

Action Bronson Alchemist – Rare Chandeliers

After impressing fans earlier in 2012 with Blue Chips, Action Bronson returned in November with Rare Chandeliers: possibly the most engaging 40 minutes of Hip Hop this year. Armed with a fully-loaded arsenal of Alchemist instrumentals, Bronson narrates full-bellied tales of travel, dimes, food and catching bodies. Cameos by ScHoolboy Q, Roc Marciano and Evidence deliver, but they’re only co-stars in the audio blaxploitation film that serves as a vehicle for Bronson’s show-stealing punchlines, colorful imagery and anti-hero presentation. Alchemist continues to keep his name in G.O.A.T. producer conversations with sound beds just as eccentric as the character rhyming over them. Songs such as “Randy The Musical” and “Eggs On The Third Floor” effortlessly slither from slyly sinister to fun and carefree between verses. Together, the duo adds a whimsical edge to the hardnosed East Coast Hip Hop that the genre has been missing, and listeners enjoyed them for it.

Action Bronson Party Supplies – Blue Chips

After a year that included two great albums (Dr. Lecter and Well Done) and a flood of Ghostface Killah comparisons, Action Bronson emerged in 2012 with Blue Chips: a project that solidified him as one of the most entertaining new personalities in rap. Fools Gold producer Party Supplies laces a varied platter of grit and soul, while Bronson splices stories of inner-city prostitution (“Hookers At The Point”) and deteriorating romance (“Thug Love Story 2012”) between kaleidoscopic references to gourmet food, professional wrestling and orally generous women. The Pretty Toney comparisons will likely stay put, but Action Bronson isn’t going anywhere, either—and that’s all that matters.

Angel Haze – Reservation

With her breakthrough record Reservation, Universal Republic emcee Angel Haze uses punchline-driven showcases as a gateway drug to lure listeners into an unfiltered diary of her personal life. And unlike many, she can tread both waters equally well. Viral songs such as “New York” and “Werkin’ Girls” are chockfull of acrobatic flows, an authoritative mic presence and impressive one-liners, easing the usual “hang with the guys” worries that plague other female rappers. The album unravels to reveal nuanced vulnerability: the resilience built from homelessness, moving from state to state, and being raised by a mother who she says was manipulated by religion. Detailed songs about romance—both the hopefulness of new love, and the wistfulness of love left behind—round out the album. On “Realness,” she claims, “I’m not the next anybody; I’m the first Angel Haze,” and Reservation shows exactly who that person is.

Flatbush Zombies – D.R.U.G.S.

Anyone who didn’t know about Flatbush Zombies before their appearance on A$AP Mob’s single “Bath Salts” was more acquainted after their debut album. D.R.U.G.S.—an acronym for Death And Reincarnation Under God’s Supervision—sees the Brooklyn outfit using self-produced gothic sound beds to back rock star rhymes about pussy, fighting, money and, obviously, drug use. “S.C.O.S.A.” develops that cryptic bounce to a tee, and their breakout hit “Thug Waffle” pairs a more digestible version of that sound with shrieking vocals. The frenzy continues on the demented “Face-Off (L.S.Darko),” which uses splices from news reports to split verses of rebellious bars. With an outcast aura and self-contained work, Flatbush Zombies has the ingredients to be around for a while.

The Weeknd Rocks Bronx Show, Releases ‘I Got You’ With Troy Ave

By Rob Markman

NEW YORK — Most artists never fully indulge in all that New York City has to offer. While Manhattan, with all of its bright light and big city allure is a major attraction, the Big Apple’s other boroughs have tons to offer as well. That’s why the Weeknd took his tour to Bronx for his third NYC show in as many nights.

The crowd at the Paradise Theater lined the sidewalk on Grand Concourse and filed into the atmospheric venue which was built in 1929 and now stands as an NYC landmark. By the time Abel Tesfaye‘s band took the stage at 9:30 p.m., the fans who packed the orchestra and upper mezzanine seats roared to greet the Toronto singer who set the night off belting out “Lonely Star.”

“It seems like pain and regret are your best friends,” Tesfaye sung matching the exact pitch and emotion as the recorded version which appeared on last year’s free mixtape/album Thursday.

Since dropping his trio of projects starting with House of Balloons in March 2011 and ending with Echoes of Silence in December, the Weeknd has kept himself cloaked in mystery, making few public appearances. Yet, now that his three tapes are being repacked for release as Trilogy on Universal Republic in November, Tesfaye has come out of his shell much to his fans delight.

The silky-voiced singer ran through his emotive collection of tragic love songs like “Loft Music,” “The Party The After Party” and “What You Need” as the pre-Halloween crowd (some in costume) churned out every word.

This was Tesfaye’s second time in the Boogie Down Bronx, the first was a strip club visit with BX rap hero French Montana, he would tell the crowd anecdotally. The only naked vixens were the ones on the stage’s main screen, however but it’s hard to imagine that a nudie bar run could ever match last night’s energy.

By the time he reached the heart-breaking “Wicked Games” the Canadian singer shadow-danced back and forth and performed spin moves reminiscent of a 1980′s Michael Jackson, as couples in the crowd embraced and swayed in time with the tune.

Soon after the Weeknd, who was flanked by a full band and two back-up singers, turned things up and teased the crowd into an ear-ringing frenzy before going into his opening verse on Drake’s “Crew Love.” The crowd ironically mouthed the entire song despite Tesfaye’s boast: “This ain’t a f—in’ sing along.”

For an encore Tesfaye marched back out to “Outside” as the stage’s orange and yellow flame-like light show capped of the hottest show Bronx residences have seen in a while.

The OVO XO rep wasn’t done with the evening’s tricks and treats however. Last night Tesfaye tweeted out a YouTube link to Brooklyn rapper Troy Ave’s new “Rolling Stone”-sampling single “I Got You.” “bumpin this backstage crazyyyy,” he wrote capping off his three night NYC run.

What a weekend!

The Weeknd Won’t Let Record Deal Change His Music

e75cf weeknd1 The Weeknd Wont Let Record Deal Change His Music

By Carolyn Amurao

In anticipation of his major label debut, Trilogy, coming this November, the Weeknd promises fans that his crossover into the mainstream game will not compromise his artistry. In an open letter, the Canadian singer-songwriter vowed: “You will continue to get what you fell in love with, and I will continue to give you what you ask for.”

The Weeknd, aka Abel Tesfaye, first claimed his spot in the underground scene with House of Balloons in March 2011. Now he feels “stuck” between worlds as his decision to sign on with Universal Republic gains him more recognition. This “predicament” is what he expresses in the new video for “Rolling Stone” from his Thursday mixtape, in which he sings, “I think I’ll be different/I hope I’m not different.” The RB crooner explains that the girl holding on to him in the video symbolizes his fans and the camera lights represent his transition from underground to mainstream.

But despite his conflicted state, the singer believes in the new direction of his career. “Even though I don’t want to, it is a step I feel I must take to evolve as an artist.” He signs off the letter with gratitude and assures fans: “I will not disappoint.”

Q-Tip Signs To Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music Label

Kanye West and his G.O.O.D. Music team are steadily building anticipation for their upcoming group album, but the latest news from Kanye’s all-star camp is that has joined their ranks.

On Wednesday (April 11), Universal Republic chairman and CEO Barry Weiss announced that the veteran rapper and producer is the latest addition to the G.O.O.D Music family, which operates under Def Jam Recordings.

Q-Tip, who built his legacy as a member of the iconic group A Tribe Called Quest, released his last solo album, the previously shelved Kamaal/ The Abstract, in 2009. The Renaissance came out in 2008. They were released via Motown and Battery Records. Now he’s set to drop his fourth solo LP, tentatively titled The Last Zulu, under the G.O.O.D. Music/ Def Jam umbrella.

“I’m excited to be a part of the great iconic Def Jam label,” Q-Tip said in a statement. “I’m humbled to be a part of such a storied history. To reconnect with Barry Weiss is a great thing. As far as G.O.O.D. Music, I’m excited to solidify my working relationship with Kanye, and I look forward to all the opportunities that lie ahead in our partnership. I will do my best to present the most cutting-edge music I can.”

Q-Tip and Kanye have worked closely together in the past, most recently teaming up for production on West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Watch the Throne, his joint album with Jay-Z.

Weiss, who worked with Q-Tip during his tenure with A Tribe Called Quest on Jive Records in the 1990s, says that he’s “thrilled to be working with Q-Tip once again.”

With Q-Tip now on board, it’s likely that the Queens native will leave his mark on the upcoming G.O.O.D. Music album, which is set to the debut this spring. The album’s first single, Mercy dropped last week with features from Big Sean, Pusha T and fellow Def Jam signee 2 Chainz. Q-Tip will join a label whose roster includes John Legend, Kid Cudi, Big Sean, Pusha T, Cyhi Da Prynce, Mr. Hudson and Mos Def.

Kid Cudi On ‘WZRD’ Album Sales: ‘It Definitely Proves A Point’

By James Montgomery

Kid Cudi’s new WZRD album with Dot Da Genius was born out of the duo’s spontaneous desire to craft a passion project, and even though the Cleveland-born, rapper-turned-rocker recently spit some pretty harsh words at his label for not supporting the album, he’s still more than confident in the project. The project’s impressive first-week sales didn’t hurt too much either. “I think it definitely proves a point, that there was a method to my madness,” Cudi tells MTV News.

Kid Cudi Releases Tracklist For ‘WZRD’ Album

To call Kid Cudi’s WZRD’s a passion project would be an understatement of downright sorcerous proportions. From the moment he and producer/bandmate Dot da Genius conceived the idea of making a rock record — which recently inspired a spate of irate tweets accusing his label of failing to support said record — Cudi hasn’t exactly been shy about expressing his feelings about the band, its self-titled album or the success they’ve had in spite of pretty much everything.

“We were recording the last Man on the Moon album at Cudi’s house, and we just finished ‘Trapped in my Mind,’ which is the last song on the album,” Dot explained to MTV News last week. “Cudi wanted to implement guitar. So we got a guitar in the building, he picked it up, started playing and fell in love immediately. And, like a week later, I went back to his house and he was like, ‘Yo, we got to do this.’ “

“I was like, ‘Let’s start a band,’ ” Cudi laughed. ” ‘It’s going to be called WZRD and it’s going to be awesome and it’s going to sell 70,000-plus records its first week, with no promo.’ “

And, yes, that last jab is pretty telling. Because though Cudi backtracked a bit on his previous assessments of Universal Republic’s promotional efforts for WZRD, he’s still clearly enjoying proving everyone wrong. And those first-week sales figures (and #3 debut, the highest of any new album last week) are only adding to that enjoyment.

“I think it definitely proves a point, that there was a method to my madness, that the kids are out there and they want the music. It’s just like a that’s-what-I-f—ing thought-type of thing,” he said. “Not just to the label or whatever — I’m not going to say the label had no faith in the project — just kind of to the naysayers and people that didn’t really believe in it.

“It’s not Man on the Moon numbers, but, sh– man, it’s more than we thought,” he continued. “To debut at #3 on the charts, that’s dope, that’s some Man on the Moon sh–. I debuted #3 last album and #4 on the first album, so, you know, it’s dope.”

Kid Cudi Blasts Label For Not Supporting WZRD Album

Kid Cudi got a bit frustrated with inattentive fans during the NYC listening session for his WZRD LP (with Dot da Genius) last week and his label Universal Republic didn’t make things much better when they reportedly undershipped the album this week. The album debuted on Tuesday (February 28) but according to the Cleveland-born rapper, the label only shipped 55K copies to stores.

Kid Cudi Releases Tracklist For ‘WZRD’ Album

“Ok so just a heads up, my weak ass label only shipped 55k physicals cuz they treated this like some indie side project tax right off,” Cudi tweeted on Tuesday, lashing out at Universal Republic. “So its def gonna be tough to find one in the stores guys, I’m sorry about that.”

With its rock feel, the album is a bit of a departure from the Kid Cudi sound fans became familiar with on his first two albums, Man on the Moon: The End of Day and Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager. 2009′s MOTM earned Cudi a gold plaque and the second installment sold a solid 169,000 copies its first week out in 2010. To the G.O.O.D. Music singer/rapper, WZRD is no throwaway project. Cudi has high hopes for the LP and the next single, “Teleport 2 Me, Jamie.”

“Im lettin Universal Republic have it, f–k it. What they gon’ do, spank me?? Hahahaha,” Cudi wrote as he went off about the lack of radio support the LP has received. “AND Teleport 2 Me, Jamie aint on the radio!!!! like helloooooooooo????? HIT HIT HIT!!!”

On the day of the album’s release, even Cudders had a hard time finding a copy, since Universal Republic, he claimed, never sent him a finished version. Or maybe it just got lost in the mail, but after a little hunting he was able to make a purchase. “Bought a couple albums today, mine included, feeling good feelin great,” he tweeted. “I cant believe I just finished my 3rd studio album! wild yo.”

Kid Cudi Accuses Label Of Under-Shipping WZRD LP

Kid Cudi has been known to rage against the machine, so it came as no surprise when he blasted his label for their handling of his newly released group LP WZRD. The collaborative album between Cudi and “Day ‘n’ Nite” producer Dot da Genius hit stores on Tuesday — some fans just might find it a little hard to find.
