The Weeknd Steals The Show On French Montana’s ‘Gifted’

The Weeknd Steals The Show On French Montanas Gifted

By Maurice Bobb

French Montana’s debut, Excuse My French, is just six days away, so to get his fans ready to click “buy” on iTunes or stand in line at their local retailer for the physical CD, the Bad Boy signee served up his latest single, “Gifted,” featuring The Weeknd Wednesday (May 15) for their listening pleasure.

Debuted via Karen Civil, the track has a totally different vibe from his strip club anthems like, “Freaks” and “Pop That,” Frenchie’s latest explores his rare introspective side. On the four-minute track, the singer born Abel Tesfaye offers up his signature falsetto to set the mood, before the rapper born Karim Kharbouch jumps in to flex his lyrical muscle at the 1:40 mark. That’s right, the Toronto crooner goes in for almost two minutes before French serves up his verse, making this song feel like more of a Weeknd single with a Montana feature than the other way around.

Still, Montana manages to mine his experiences from hip-hop stargazer to superstar with lines like, “this that Derek Jeter on his last catch/this that Whitney Houston on her last track” and “this that Tiger Woods on his last swing/this that Jimi Hendrix on his last string,” which explore his exasperation with navigating the pitfalls of success. For his part, the Weeknd offers up the perfect hook, singing, “When they love me, I get money, I get money, I get money.”

Thus far, Frenchie’s first LP is living up to the hype, with a roster of who’s who rappers on tap to make appearances: Diddy, Lil Wayne, Drake, 2 Chainz and, of course, Rick Ross, who has consistently mentioned the upcoming album on his Twitter feed. EMF is out May 21st. The video for “Gifted,” which features Frenchie’s tiger cubs Ike and Tina, has already been shot in Miami.

Chris Brown’s Father Disapproves Of Rihanna Relationship

(Chris Brown on a possible Rihanna EP)

By Georgette Pierre

Since rekindling their on-again, off-again relationship, Chris Brown and Rihanna haven’t shied away from publicly displaying their love and affection but Brown’s father, Clinton Brown, doesn’t agree with his son hooking back up with the good girl, gone bad.

In an interview with the NY Daily News, Clinton Brown had a mouthful to say about his son’s relationship. “I personally really didn’t want him and Rihanna back together,” he said. But it’s not because he disliked the “Diamonds” singer. Referring to the 2009 assault  that nearly ruined his son’s career, he fears that the pair’s relationship will end in tragedy. “I hate to use examples, but Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse — I mean I could go on and on!” He continued, “Is that a given — that you can’t have fortune and fame without (death) being the end result?”

Clinton also wasn’t naïve as to why his son would want to get back with Rihanna. “She’s beautiful, she’s exotic, she’s successful,” but if Brown’s father had it his way, he would have rather seen Chris with “American Idol” winner, Jordin Sparks. “I personally liked Jordin Sparks. She’s a wholesome young lady, very pretty,” he said.

Despite other people’s opinions, Chris Brown admitted that he had to work hard for Rihanna’s forgiveness. Since getting back together, the two have collaborated on each other’s album, with Chris revealing details about his upcoming album X and possibly a collaborative EP with his girlfriend.

Nicki Minaj To Mariah Carey On ‘American Idol’: ‘Simmer Down, Sir’

By Carolyn Amurao

Even though there was a lot of drama leading up to this season of “American Idol,” Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey have managed to stay quite cordial on the show. Sure there have been a few eye rolls here and disapproving looks there, but last night (April 18) is when things really heated up. While the final five girls battled it out onstage to make it into the finals, the divas had their own battle going on the judging panel.

After Kree Harrison’s rendition of the Black Crowes’ “She Talks to Angels,” Nicki Minaj said she disagreed with Mariah’s critique. Mariah (who inspired some of the evening’s song choices) then started to defend what she said as the two talked over each other and her final (audible) words were, “I disagree with your disagreement.”

Minaj, putting an end to the back and forth said, “Simmer down, sir” and continued on with her comments. This was definitely a highlight of the night even though the rapper judge is known for her (seemingly uncontrollable) tendency to call people weird things. And while “sir” isn’t the oddest way she’s addressed people, it’s certainly the last thing we’d think to call one of the greatest (female) singers of our time.

Later in the show, however, Nicki showed some love for her fellow judge when vocal powerhouse Candice Glover sang “When You Believe” by Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. Glover’s performance prompted Nicki to recall memories of listening to the song “over and over,” crying because the lyrics really resonated with her. “That is how you do a Mariah Carey-Whitney Houston song!” she added.

Mariah, trying not to get emotional as she remembered working with the late great Houston, looked over at Minaj with a humbled expression. This moment showed that when it comes to judging contestants, the two may butt heads; but that doesn’t mean they don’t show respect for one another. At the end of the day, Queen Barbz is a Mariah fan just like the rest of us—and Mariah knows she’s worthy of the praise.

Clive Davis Gets Candid About Bisexuality In ‘Soundtrack Of My Life’ Memoir

Clive Davis Gets Candid About Bisexuality In Soundtrack Of My Life Memoir

By Henna Kathiya

It’s definitely not an understatement calling Clive Davis a music legend. He has an uncanny ear for music and, as a result is responsible for fueling the careers of big name talents such as Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, Aretha Franklin and Jennifer Hudson. Not to mention he’s the current chief creative officer of Sony Music Entertainment. After 50 years in the music industry, Davis put all his experiences into his memoir “The Soundtrack of My Life,” in which he reveals his bisexuality.

Davis was definitely not afraid to get personal in his new book, revealing in the final chapter  (via Entertainment Weekly) that since the end of his second marriage in 1985 he has been sexually involved with men. He writes about having relationships with both men and women. He also talks about being in a monogamous relationship with a man for the past seven years.

The music executive began to experiment with men when a male fan at Studio 54 approached him. Although he has been in a relationship with a  man for the past seven years he makes it clear that he is bisexual and not gay. “Do I feel I could have been similarly attracted to a woman?” he wrote. “The answer is yes.”

[News] Papoose Questions Chris Lighty’s Suicide On "Obituary 2012" Track

Papoose doesn’t believe that Chris Lighty took his own life.

Earlier today, Papoose dropped a track, “Obituary 2012,” which mourns many of the lost lives in the music industry from last year.

The song includes remembrances of singer Whitney Houston and “Soul Train” creator Don Cornelius. The song also mentions Chris Lighty, head of Violator Management, who reportedly committed suicide last year.

In the song, Papoose reveals that doesn’t believe that Lighty’s cause of death was suicide:

Chris Lighty, Hip Hop shed a tear / He gave birth to so many careers / Born May 8th, ’68, in the Bronx, used to carry records for Red Alert, he was smart / Started Violator, made it better / He helped me with my career, we took a million dollar deal together / The cause of his death? They say suicide / But anybody who knows Chris sees through the lies.”

Pap joins 50 Cent in his speculation, as Fif reportedly hired investigators to look into Chris Lighty‘s death. Lighty’s family has also made known their skepticism.

CeCe Frey ‘Knew’ She Wasn’t Going To Win ‘X Factor’

After the dust settles on the second season of “The X Factor” and the eventual winner is crowned (spoiler alert: it’s most likely going to be Tate Stevens or Carly Rose Sonenclar), the most memorable and polarizing contestant must be the blond, leopard-print-loving CeCe Frey.

From her initial sassy audition of Xtina’s “Ain’t No Other Man” to her mock rivalry with Paige Thomas (over a Whitney Houston song, no less) and her over-the-top, glitzed-out performances, Frey managed to both entertain and frustrate us week to week.

It all came to an end during this week’s elimination episode, which saw mentor Demi Lovato lose her entire team after Frey was finally voted out of the competition.

If the young songstress reminded you of Cher Lloyd on the U.K. version of “The X Factor” or Adam Lambert from “American Idol” — i.e., a polarizing, out-of-the-box pop-star wannabe — you’re not alone.

“When Adam Lambert was on ['Idol'], I said, ‘Now that’s the kind of dude that needs to win one of these shows,’ ” Frey told MTV News on Friday (December 7). “But the thing is, performers like me and Adam Lambert and Diamond White and Lyric 145, we’re not the kind of artists that win these things. We’re the kind of artist that win afterwards — or I hope so, anyway — and I’m going to work my butt off to get there.”

As defiant as ever, Frey was adamant she didn’t come into this competition expecting to win.

“You hope for that, but I pretty much knew,” she said of her chances. “I mean, I had leopard print on my face, for Christ’s sake! I pretty much knew that I wasn’t that cookie-cutter girl that you pick to win one of these things, but I knew that I was going to use this and run with it.”

Without a doubt, Frey was a fierce performer throughout the competition, managing to climb the leaderboard, defy Simon’s comment to “pack a suitcase” last week and amass a legion of fans. But was leaving in sixth place enough for the rising songstress?

“You bet your ass I’m happy with sixth place!”

What did you think of CeCe’s elimination? Let us know in the comments!

Kelly Clarkson, Pitbull, More Added To ‘VH1 Divas’ Lineup

This year’s “VH1 Divas” bill just got a bit feistier. Show vet and Miss Independent herself Kelly Clarkson has been added to the A-list lineup, as have divo rapper Pitbull, Melanie Fiona and Metric.

Clarkson has appeared on the show twice before, in 2009 and 2011. This marks the first time for the other newly announced performers.

They’ll join host Adam Lambert and previously announced performers Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Kelly Rowland, Ciara and Jordin Sparks.

“VH1 Divas” 2012 will air live on VH1 on Sunday, December 16, at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT when it all goes down in Los Angeles at the Shrine Auditorium. In addition to the announced performances by all those divas both male and female, the show will pay tribute to late divas Whitney Houston and Donna Summer. Both performers had appeared on the show several times before their deaths earlier this year. More performers and presenters are expected to be announced as the show date approaches.

“This is going to be one hell of a party! We are extremely thrilled to have the extraordinarily talented Adam Lambert as our 2012 ‘VH1 Divas’ host,” Lee Rolontz, EVP of VH1′s original music production and development, said in a statement. “The world has truly been inspired by dance music and what better way for VH1 to pay tribute than by honoring legends Whitney Houston and Donna Summer through song and dance.”

Who are you most looking forward to seeing at this year’s “VH1 Divas”? Tell us in the comments!

Watch Kelly Clarkson, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and more when “VH1 Divas” airs live from Los Angeles on VH1 on Sunday, December 16, at 9 p.m. ET.
